Pigeon poop closes Ellerton Primary School
Pigeon poop closes Ellerton Primary School

“A WORSENING PIGEON PROBLEM has forced the shutdown of Ellerton Primary School for the rest of the week after staff and students complained of, among other things, itchy skin. The ceiling of one block was ripped down yesterday as workers began a cleanup of the St. George school following reports of mites, piles of sickening pigeon droppings and an awful stench there. Workers from E&E Building Solutions were late yesterday dismantling ceilings and carrying out repairs to classrooms.” – Nation Newspaper (9/10/2014)

Once again my mind boggles!

Have not the students and staff of our schools just returned to the schools after a lengthy holiday? Pray tell me, did not anyone check the state of those plants during that time? Why should our scions and staff of these schools be subjected to such deplorable conditions?

It seems that neither the ministry of education, nor the Minister of Education care about the health and well-being of our students or school staff. In the mean time the Minister of Education is having fun jetting to China when he should be here looking after them!

Which school will be next to be infested or not in proper condition for smooth tuition to be carried out, and for staff and students to feel safe in its environment?

Will the Minister of Education help foot the doctors’ bills when they start rolling in for the parents/guardians and staff?

Is it not high time for the Minister of Education to take his leave after so many blunders during his watch?

Did the Minister of Finance, in his wisdom, perhaps say that there was no money for rectifying such life-threatening situations?

What if there were people who already have problems with their respiratory tracts?

Why did not the staff refuse to work under such conditions?

One must always put one’s health first!

I cannot imagine what it was like working and studying under such filthy conditions. That takes the cake with respect to what has happened at our schools up to now.

What about the human rights of the staff and students at that school?

This Government – which is “people-centred” – has only brought heartache and frustration to Barbarians and those who choose to call Barbados home!

I dare not think what things would be like if they were not “people-centred”!

  1. This tells us how serious the powers that be are concerned about our children and public properties. Never proactive like everything else. NEXT?

  2. It might all get washed away today.

THE UNSTABLE WEATHER of the past week continues with the Barbados Meteorological Services issuing another Flash Flood Warning.

  3. Some hate it when we look back ,and compare what we had back then with the shit we have now. Before all of these fancy names were accorded to the Ministry of Transport and Works et al, there was a Department within that ministry known as the Public Works Department, whose task it was to look after the maintenance and repairs of government owned buildings, and what a commendable job they did. In these days where we see public buildings falling to bits and many being abandoned, and many millions of tax payers dollars being paid out to the chosen few for rental of privately owned office accommodation, there is more need than ever to re-establish a Public Works Department or similar , charged with the maintenance and repairs to government buildings.
Over the years we have come along and found systems in place which the old non-degreed people had installed, and we quickly removed them or fail to maintain them. One such thing was the chain at the back of fuel carrying tanker trucks. These were in place to dissipate the build up of static electricity which is potentially dangerous. The modern way is the ground the tanker vehicle to a proper earth rod provided at the petrol station, before delivering the bulk fuel. I have yet to see one of these vital earth leads in place during resupply.
A few days ago Ellersie Secondary school was struck by lightning. What ever happened to the use of lightening conductor rods, which were installed on church roofs and on other tall buildings, and grounded to earth?,allowing the lightening a safe passage to earth.

  6. I did all my schooling in Barbados and for as long as I remember every year one, two or many schools are unfit to start at the beginning of the school year. This always mystified me until very recently.
The answer is simple…students, teachers, administrators, the minister and the ministry are all on vacation.
    It’s never gonna change.

  7. I have heard the same concern expressed by many here on BU, who obviously believe that government is the cured to all of their social-ill. What I haven’t heard expressed in the statement above is how long has this problem been going on? And who took the appropriate steps to bring awareness to this problem before it reached crisis point?

Nonetheless, it seems from my distant perspective, that the writer made a focused effort to concentrated his attacked on the Minister business endeavors, rather than the “West Nile Virus” which is transmitted by the mosquitoes, but has been founded in feaces and dead bodies of birds. That ought to have been the fundamental concern as it relates to the health, well being and safety of our young people.

  8. Mus be a big pigeon.
    Fulla shoite.
    Obvious a DLP Pigeon.

  9. Dr Love

It is not my designed intent to deflect from the topic before deliberation here, but may I ask with no impertinence intended: what wrong with supporting a party which has and continues to be the Drinking-Water of the common-people in Barbados?

  10. Dr. Love

I could never see myself voting for the Republican Party here in this country, neither will I ever vote for the Barbados Labour Party there in Barbados. Because the both of them I believe, are cut from the same vine so to speak.

  12. can some big wig in the BLP yardfowl brigade come up with a solution on “how to stop pigeons from shiting” or better yet just write a book,

  13. @ AC
    Sure way to stop them

I am not sure you can stop a pigeon from shitting but you can stop it from getting into the roof space, which seems to be the problem here. Bird netting, it’s called. I would have thought a yardfowl would have come across it.

You know what kills me with Barbados. Its the frigging misguided loyalty and out of place priorities. You shut down a school because of bird shite but you keep a musty ass dilapidated fish market in Oistins open where the white cattle egret birds shit on the counters and pick at fish and yet this is all right!!!! Barbados is really a banana republic ran by a bunch of monkeys in suits.

  16. ST george dragon oh yes you can stop the pigeon from shitting , but the animal rights activist would give u,shit,,

  17. @All

The delete button is a wonderful feature to flush shit.

  18. But really in the case of the pigeons ,it is not an easy procedure,, especially in nesting time, these love birds are very protective of their young and would nest in the most unimaginable of places spending hours with their young building nest and storing food, do not know how much netting would help.the netting can also be used as material for building their nest resulting in holes in which can use as an escape route

  19. Sunshine sunny shine

I am here balling out to I almost piss myself, at what you have written. You called it misguided loyalty and out of place priorities, but I call it cultivated ignorance to the highest degree. It just a sad state of affairs when some people are so backwards and self-righteous that their unable to see flaws in their ways.

  20. I just feel a sense of sadness for some of the people who call themselves the educated class in Barbados. And an academic system which hasn’t been able to teach the student how to apply theory to the practical reality. Yes, there is a crucial need for the kind of leader who is capable of shape the national consciousness of the people and inspiring them to stand outside of the enveloping confines of culture and race, to see the world from a broader perspective.

  21. We are focusing on the OUTPUT of the pigeons , but surely some thought must be given to the INPUT as well. There must be an easy source of food that attracts the pigeons to this site. They are either be feeding , or they are feasting on discarded scraps of food thrown around the area. Eliminate these feeding areas, and the pigeons may consider moving house.

I must take exception when you wrote and suggested that the Minister of Education does not care about the health and well-being of our students. How can you say that when he is providing 3000 bursaries, presumably out of his own pocket since Cabinet never sanctioned that announcement?

  23. In the bad old colonial days when we were properly governed and held accountable for our deeds and misdeeds, the primary school which I attended had no ceiling. The roof is high(its standing still)and in those days ,there were “push out”wooden windows which allowed the easterly trades to cool the building all day, rain fall or sun shine, so that we never felt hot.No ceiling, hence no pigeon/bird nests.Very practical solution eh?

  24. @ Gabriel
We no longer construct buildings to take advantage of the N.E Trade winds, and other tropical factors .We construct buildings to look like those in New York or Toronto.
Most of the Anglican churches were built facing the East,( this might have been secondary to the belief that when Christ come again he will appear from the East) But this East -West orientation of the church building had a cooling effect on the interior of the building.
When the wind struck the eastern side of the building , it was diverted on both sides of the building , thereby increasing the wind speed and reducing the wind pressure to below that of atmospheric pressure (less than 14.7 psi ) This reduction in pressure on the outside of the building, causes the warm air within the building, which is at atmospheric pressure(14.7 psi) to be sucked out (or forced out) through the doors and windows, and be replaced with cooler fresh air supplied by the N.E Trades wind. (This is partly how a carburetor on a car works) .
Church buildings began to get hot inside when certain types of windows were fitted as replacements, and when annexes were added to the church building, obstructing the air flow around the structure,

Thank you for your correction; I could have found the words but I am trying not to use too much colourful language knowing fully well how bombastic and ghetto-ish I could be. But think about it; you buy food from that dreadful place (Oistins Fish Market); you teach school children in the other yet you leave open the one for which hundreds of Barbadians and tourist buy food from to eat and the one you do not eat from, you closed citing the environmental and health reasons to be numerous bird shite droppings? And a friend of mine text and told me don’t forget the rats, paros/vagrants, cats, crabs, and the numerous piss and shit spots that contribute to the nonsense in this market,. WUH I WOULD GOT TO SAY THIS IS A THING UNHEARD OF. Maybe you Dompey can help me comprehend the authorities approach to matters of health and environment. Is this another one of them reactions at the point when things get very bad? Because it seems in Barbados you only respond when there is the crisis but not before the impending crisis. Pleaseeee help me bozie.

  27. When the world gives you lemons make lemonade when it gives you pigeons make squab. SSS I always enjoy and look forward to oistins. but I have never been there in the light of day,I am getting ill just thinking about it

  28. Just checked out several Barbados dictionaries, can’t seem to find the word MAINTENANCE, huuuummmmmmmmmmm, could this is a problem.

If you don’t teach MAINTENANCE in the schools, what do you expect when these ill-literate graduates graduate ???

  29. Many homes in Barbados have to respond to pigeons and bats trying to setup residence in the roof, it is not rocket science to put counter measures in place. The pigeons nesting in the roof would have have occurred overnight.

The Oistins Bay Garden is one ‘tourist attraction’ where the opportunity for both visitors and locals can intermingle and let their hair down without the usual unwritten apartheid rules and regulations of a struggling post slave and colonial society.

But most of all it provides a ready-made cash cow for the local economy since much of the money spent at that complex finds itself circulating in the local economy generated from cash sales from food to drinks to handicraft.

Don’t you then think an intelligent and forward thinking administration would value it as a sacred cash cow that ought to be treated with respect and to protect it from controllable risks factors?
Barbados has been warned over and over about the poor and deteriorating standards of hygiene and the escalating public health risks at the Oistins Food & Entertainment venue.
I hope that when the proverbial public health shit hits the vital tourism fan the Bajan authorities would be prepared for the ensuing fall out.
Whom would they look to blame then? Some Guyanese or Jamaican that contaminated their pristine environment?

I am not even talking about the Oistins Bay Garden Fish Fry. I am talking about the darn fish market. The Oistins Bay Garden is another nasty ass place. When I was there last year, pools of stagnant water from grease choked drains with a very offensive smell greeted me. Now tell me Miller what the ass is the priority? I do not understand the people who run my darn country. The fish market is so darn stink and ugly and you stand and watch these egrets walk on top the counters where fish is placed with numerous bird shite. IThis ain’t now start happending. yet the authorities close a school but a stinking food source environment is left to continue. Help me to understand this because I just do not understand. Here in Europe, a restaurant was shut down simply for having a non functional third wash sink. The health authorities in this place are militant with their standards and rules. In Barbados, these cunts has some misplaced priorities. You try to right one wrong whilst leaving 10 more dangerous others…Stuuuuuuuuuuuuupse

I think you have your spelling incorrect. The word is MAINTENANTS, i.e , Pigeons, rats, termites , mice ,parrows, and Barrow’s Army of occupation.

  34. Colonel Buddy

So you gained some browie points because Wily Coyote misspelled a word, big deal? I hope this victory adds to your overreaching ego? Now, there are certain things you need not get voice to because as one ages, cognitive functions progressively declines.

You are so right, Dompey ! You are living proof of such black and white evidence.

@ Old Colonel Buggy (or is that Buddy?):
Do you really feel you are fit to respond to that silly {little} boy called Donkey, as Captain George Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe) of Dad’s Army would so describe?
The fool from Spooner vil(l)e allowed the pun on “MAINTENANCE”, sorry “MAINTENANTS” to fly over his head as if he was just an onlooker as the cuckoo flew over his nest of stupidity.

  36. miller now that u have drop your infested’infected bowel movement here on the pages of BU maybe you can give us illiterate snobs the answer on how to get rid of pigeons and their droppings, hint BTW one already flew the BLP coop a couple months ago,boy ! oh! boy that nest must have been real uncomfortable to rest on./

  37. Colonel Buggy

Seriously, Buddy, how dear you profaned and desecrated the name of Mr. Barrow with your haft-baked and twisted jokes? I know enough to respect the dignity and worth of the late Tom Adams, irrespective of his faults and failings while he traversed the land of the living. Even though in reflection: I couldn’t help but to beat back emotions of excitement, when a madman run off with Adams’s annual budget on day. Boy, it was a moment made for the big screen in Hollywood Buggy.

“miller now that u have drop your infested’infected bowel movement here on the pages of BU maybe you can give us illiterate snobs the answer on how to get rid of pigeons and their droppings,”

Now here is a suggestion you might find pleasantly tasty.
Cull the species by eating them.
They would make a good source of ‘non-genetically-modified’ protein to serve as part of the School Meals fare instead of the KFC and Chefette 4-5 weeks GM chicken and the wheat flour bread and chemically enhanced corn curls.

But you might have to soak them like the polluted shite crabs in a barrel of bleach to kill off the avian flu virus that might mutate to a powerful strain of the original monkey Ebola.

  39. maybe you can serve them in the parliament lunch room where the BLP loafers like to hang out, make for a good cleansing of the soul, i know you would have the correct recipe,

” maybe you can serve them in the parliament lunch room where the BLP loafers like to hang out, make for a good cleansing of the soul, i know you would have the correct recipe,”

I forgot to mention that place as a possible outlet for serving those pigeons and their droppings. The only problem is that there might not be enough to go around when one looks at the girth (size of bellies) of those on the government side.
Stinkliar alone could eat 1,000 of those birds, not to mention the rest in the oversized Cabinet.
But it would be interesting to see a scene similar to that at the sandals job fair involving a fight between big guts Stinkliar and loud mouth Inniss over the pigeon bones with Sealy refereeing.

  42. I heard Pornville Inniss making a spirited defence of the Islamists having their own gated community in the Husbands/Prior Park district.Presumably its part of St James South,so as usual one should measure such pronouncements in terms, not of the wellbeing of the Barbadian mores, values and culture but in terms of the neophyte political pimps which bring votes to the democratic labour party. The dlp is about maintaining their presence in government in spite of the lack of investment and confidence in them as a governing party. To compare Islamists with Christians is to compare a cruel religion with a peace loving religion.
ISIS has proved that even where these Islamists live and benefit by living among christian communities in the West, they still harbour the blind faith attributes assigned to the ignorant masses of less enlightened countries of the East.
As these folk increase in their number in Barbados they will move to take over every institution that our system of government affords them. And Pornville will say ‘dem is bajans too,dem entitle to a piece ‘o de rock.Yes,they will have their little stoves and pots and jetting off to Mecca.
Bajans will at a future date request the US to resurrect the Monroe Doctrine
to save the country from these same Islamists. The sad thing about all this is that Barrow afforded the likes of Inniss and his motley crowd, free secondary education.Look where it has got us.A group of fools and JA’s.

The same man Inniss speaks with a forked tongue (as is his modus operandi).
Wasn’t he totally against the Cave Hill Campus constructing a multi-faith chapel of prayer for students in his constituency? His main argument at the time was that the students should intermingle with the surrounding communities and attend the religious houses.

  45. Politicking is about making decisions to stay popular. It is a flaw of the party system we operate here.
