“A WORSENING PIGEON PROBLEM has forced the shutdown of Ellerton Primary School for the rest of the week after staff and students complained of, among other things, itchy skin. The ceiling of one block was ripped down yesterday as workers began a cleanup of the St. George school following reports of mites, piles of sickening pigeon droppings and an awful stench there. Workers from E&E Building Solutions were late yesterday dismantling ceilings and carrying out repairs to classrooms.” – Nation Newspaper (9/10/2014)
Once again my mind boggles!
Have not the students and staff of our schools just returned to the schools after a lengthy holiday? Pray tell me, did not anyone check the state of those plants during that time? Why should our scions and staff of these schools be subjected to such deplorable conditions?
It seems that neither the ministry of education, nor the Minister of Education care about the health and well-being of our students or school staff. In the mean time the Minister of Education is having fun jetting to China when he should be here looking after them!
Which school will be next to be infested or not in proper condition for smooth tuition to be carried out, and for staff and students to feel safe in its environment?
Will the Minister of Education help foot the doctors’ bills when they start rolling in for the parents/guardians and staff?
Is it not high time for the Minister of Education to take his leave after so many blunders during his watch?
Did the Minister of Finance, in his wisdom, perhaps say that there was no money for rectifying such life-threatening situations?
What if there were people who already have problems with their respiratory tracts?
Why did not the staff refuse to work under such conditions?
One must always put one’s health first!
I cannot imagine what it was like working and studying under such filthy conditions. That takes the cake with respect to what has happened at our schools up to now.
What about the human rights of the staff and students at that school?
This Government – which is “people-centred” – has only brought heartache and frustration to Barbarians and those who choose to call Barbados home!
I dare not think what things would be like if they were not “people-centred”!
