The Ebola issue playing out in the United States of America (and the world) makes for interesting study. The expectation that individuals fleeing an Ebola infected Africa will 100% comply to ticking the appropriate box on an Entry and Departure form (ED) trivialises the safety of the global population.

An irony, and injustice, for those who are aware is the sad reality that a Barbadian has been frustrated in his attempt to patent a technology that would efficiently manage cross border travel at borders by relevant departments. Challenging the implementation of such a process is the unwillingness of the ‘system’ – read DLP and BLP governments – to give a Barbadian his day in court.

We have to listen to Minister Donville spouting his rhetoric about improving business facilitation, we listen to Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite expressing frustration at our clogged court system and we moan for our country.

    I AM NOT COMMENTING ABOUT THE CARICOM MATTER NOR IS MY INABILITY TO GET A DAY IN COURT FOR 7 YEARS.THE CORE ISSUE HERE

    What I would like to highlight is specifically what the patent/technology is ans what one can only say is the lack of foresight (some would call it vision) that it presents.

    “ticking the appropriate box on an Entry and Departure form (ED) trivializes the safety of the global population…” speaks to the heart of this matter

    Imagine the impact of a system that gave the Immigration Authorities of our collective Small Island Developing States, for CARICOM, the region, or any a government for that matter, the capacity to retrieve information on whether an individual was in a jurisdiction where the Ebola virus is currently.

    That capacity would make a traveller’s attitude to lie on their Entry and Departure form a moot issue and provide some measure of pre-emptive capacity for respective Customs departments and their Health interventions.

    Now we are playing a game or Russion roulette with a gun with 21 bullets chambered (21 is the number of days for incubation) in a region where local hospitals admit that they do not have the capacity to deal with the Ebola Virus – case in point the situation where every one of the hospital staff in a hospital in Mayaro? in Trinidad walked uff their jobs when a man walked in their facility two weeks ago with Ebola like symptoms, he later turned out to be suffering with malaria.

    But then again I have to repeat my chant “see that fellow Weekes, he is a trouble maker. It does not matter that he developed this solution in 2003 and was contracted in 2004 to provide a solution for our region’s cricketing activity in 2007, we gine mek he suck salt”

    I take no delight in the lack of vision that my fellow Caribbean brothers have employed regarding my patented border crossing solution,

    We only need one infected person to lie on an Entry and Departure form, bypass our airport or seaport authorities and make their way into our communities and we have ourselves a problem of a proportion that our fragile tourism industry might not be able to survive.

    But like I said before “we need to make an example of that uppity fellow Weekes” and even though what he has produced, patented and has recommended these many years hence is sound sense, “we cannot show any semblance of weakness, even if it puts our nation at risk”

    Even more frightening is if an organization like ISIS decided to infect one hundred martyrs with the Ebola virus and disperse then around the globe. Once they entered a country within the twenty-one day period before symptoms appear and then make personal contact with as many people as possible (for instance passing the virus to prostitutes who would then pass it along), they would create a global catastrophe that could destroy Western economies and decimate their populations.

    Based on what a member of the medical profession has posted on FB Ebola unlike measles,HIV,SARS is not as contagious so don’t panic!

    A productive member of our community that is faced with insidious examples double standards at the highest bureaucratic level, has reached out to the BU club for some gesture of empathy and is quickly greeted with distractions… You guys rock

    I believe that system already exists. It’s called the Internet. Sometimes it’s called newspapers. Other times it’s called a network of diplomatic legations who constantly send intelligence to their mother country.

    I am at a loss to see what this has to do with the Myrie case. Perhaps David can explain the connection to we idiots.

    If your “solution” does not involve blood tests of people at the point of departure in Africa, what exactly is the point of it?

    I have a “solution” for stopping the spread of African-origin Ebola from killing all Americans. Here it is. It’s very similar to the solution proposed by BU Family Member Negroman when he was worried about the dilution of the black race in Barbados.

    Here we go. Stop all entry into the US from people who boarded their transport in Africa.

    Simple. Technologically feasible from the get go. Maybe I should patent this idea.

    Who is the “productive member”? What evidence do you have to adduce that this individual is “productive”?

    What is “the highest bureaucratic level” at which this “member” has faced “insidious double standards”? What are the “double standards”?
    And what is the “BU club”?

    That’s why I find it doubly ludicrous that the Liberian Government should threatened the guy who came into the US with Ebola ,with prosecution, when it should be the US government dealing firmly with Liberia,and other infected countries.

    The issue as I see it David (BU) is the persistent culture of petty vindictiveness that is promoted by the Barbados Government, even at the expense of putting its citizens in mortal danger.

    Based on the reading it is unfortunate our government feels reluctant to leave a talented Bajan out in the cold. If he wer a Jamaican or Trini rest assured there would have been a lot of noise to be made.

    Why shouldn’t the Liberia government prosecute this man? When he knowingly and with foreknowledge, brought the Ebola Virus into America and possibly putting the entire population at risk. And who gives you the right to question the legal authority of a state with respect to the conduct of one of its citizens? Here in America: if you are diagnosed with HIV and knowingly infect others, you can be charge with Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

    What everyone seems to be overlooking are the two American doctors who were infected in Africa, airlifted to the US of A and cured of Ebola within weeks. The very same can be done for the thousands of Africans now infected, i mean the cure, since we all know that Ebola is a biological weapon…..more of the same with big Pharma and their concentrated greed.

    Bajans should be well aware that it will take only one or two infected tourists to wipe out the whole damn island.

    I have already voiced my opinion on the availability of a drug to cure Ebola in reference to an incident which occurred in the 1970’s at the UK’s Porton Down “Germ warfare centre”,
    During the long Cold War,both the Soviet Union and NATO, facing off against each other across the the long and not so wide mainly German border, paid particular attention to Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare (NBC).Soldiers were all kitted out with the most sophisticated clothing and protective equipment, and antidote and medicines available ,to fight things similar to what looks like what we are calling Ebola today.
    But the Military should not be solely accused of taking biological agents to Africa or anywhere.
    The effects of personal exposure to a biological agent could end in death in a two minutes after a severe bout of vomiting, urination and defecation. In most of our homes we carry mild biological agents, a watered down Mustard Gas, so to speak in the form of Baygon, Bop and all the other many brands of insecticides, which does to the cockroach or the mosquito, what the Russian nerve gas would have done to me and my comrades if we were doused with the stuff while unprepared.
    We should always remember what happened in Bhopal ,India some years ago, when exposure to a chemical caused more deaths there than what Ebola has caused so far, and right here in the industrial estate at Newton Christ Church at the time, we had similar products from the same Bhopal in India, being used in some manufacturing process .We also have a Insecticide plant in the middle of a massive residential area. But who is worried? That is our culture!
