For centuries the British empire has wreaked havoc around the globe – partitioning countries, being a hegemony, stealing resources, imposing colonialism, imposing chattel slavery, making endless war and recently being a dependable lapdog for the Americans. There was a time when it was widely said that the British empire was so large that the sun would not set on it. Some of the Scots however, used to say that because God could not trust an Englishman in the dark, was the real reason why the sun would not set on empire, LOL. But it since has. On Thursday, September 18th, 2014 the people of the heroic William Wallace will attempt to strike a final dagger into the weakened heart of this malevolent entity once referred to as Great Britain.

Though we are generally minded to hold that there are too many countries in the world and would normally argue for less states and state-lets, in this case we are unrepentantly on the opposite side of the divide. We are contending that the historic struggle of the Scottish people for independence from Britain should start a final push to end empire once and for all. We trust that other areas like Gibraltar and The Malvinas Islands will soon follow. In these cases long time foreign occupations must be defeated, but a blow right at home is no insignificant event. None of this will encourage the predominantly monarchists, often posing as republicans, in the (English speaking) Caribbean from dismantling the British colonial structure which still rules, de jure – de facto, as can be exemplified in any regional institution.

As the ‘yes’ camp gains ascendancy in recent polls, shock waves have reached Whitehall. The criminals and the descendant of criminals are being made to feel the pain inflicted on others. All kinds of monetary and other reasons are being forwarded why the children of William Wallace should not enjoy the freedom for which he gave his life.

Those against independence, the largely monarchists, make four (4) basic sets of arguments. Firstly, they contend that Scotland will be weaker based on issues of relative smallness as they relate to issues of sovereignty. They say that small states are pushed around in the international, regional environments. Secondly, they say that the smaller the state the higher the scope of risks faced, essentially through cross-regional tax transfers. Thirdly, they use the work of the Scottish philosopher and author of the Wealth of Nations – Adam Smith, to question the ability of small states to achieve complete and guaranteed integration into the European Union. Fourthly, they argue that small states have a smaller pool of talent that could be depended upon by the elites. These are arguments of convenience, of course!

Those for independence, as led by the Scottish National Party (SLP), contend that the economics are with them; that Scotland will control 90% of the resources in the North Sea; that Scotland should dis-engage from the militarism of Britain and remove the nuclear bases from its territory; that the Scots are a nation; that Scotland is a viable state; that devolution is insufficient to satisfy the aspirations of Scottish nationhood; that the political tendencies in Scotland are distinctively different to the rest of Britain, a more leftist orientation that is largely ignored in Whitehall; that policy and not economics should dominate the discussions; that issues around a division of national debt should not prevent independence.

This government of Britain which sees nothing wrong with the partitioning of South Sudan. Nothing wrong with the supporting ISIS/IS Takfiris in Syria and elsewhere and the establishment of a fake state there. Nothing wrong with breaking up Libya in state-lets. Nothing wrong with claiming territories thousand of miles from Britain. Nothing wrong with the occupation of Palestine. The occupation of Ireland. The destabilization of world countries to help the Anglo-American empire to continue its imperial control. To them, a political blow by the Scots will send a message that the world is tired of them. That they cannot form a common front in the British isles from which to threaten the rest of the world. It’s a body blow well timed and could change geo-political calculations. On the 18th of September 2014 let us celebrate the newest nation on earth – Scotland!

How often do you see the Goddards intermingle with the Black population on a social level in Barbados? And by the way, my madda worked as a domestic servant for the Goddards’ family for quite a few years. Mom also worked as a domestic servant for several of the prominent White Bajan families during the 60’s, 70’s and for a very brief time in the early 80’s. So, I have had a pretty good association with White folk in Barbados from quite a young age. And would you know: their used to used District A Police Station Mounted paddock to performed their horse and dogs shows during the earlier part of the 1970’s. This where I met Rachel Dean, whose father happened to be one of the richest White men in Barbados during the 1970’s. And I found Rachel to be a decent human being, unlike the other White folk I came into contacted with during those trying days for Black folk in Barbados.

  2. Any of the White folk here on BU remember when Rachel Dean rode her jumping horse called Nugget, and Barbara Sheloff rode hers called Daddy long legs? Those were the good old days back in the 70’s, when White folk Horses were sleeping under electric light and Black folk were sleeping under candle -stick in shackville.

Bro, Things have changed quite a bit since then, the rich folk horses still continue to live in air- conditioned, accommodation, with swimming pool, while the poor people themselves, like the lady in todays paper, are living under roofless shacks, and housing supplied, or offered, by Lashley and his gunslinging croney, that you cannot swing the proverbial cat in,never mind a horse.

  9. Pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine have brought their own idiosyncratic take on the Scottish independence debate as they back the Yes vote.

Separatists have been mockingly comparing the battle for Ukraine with the referendum in Scotland, asking why England doesn’t use military force and poking fun at the Queen and US President Barack Obama.

One supporter of Novorossiya – the breakaway region of eastern Ukraine – posted a picture of the Saltire on Twitter along with the tongue in cheek question in Russian: ‘Why doesn’t England bomb the Scottish separatists?’

  10. If 2×3 countries in the Caribbean have ‘Independence’ why can’t Scotland? What is Independence anyway? Is it about a people aspiring to be empowered or is it all about economics?

  12. David we need to discuss this.

    Does Barbados LEGALLY allow SEGREGATION?

  13. @Hants

Barbados is a free country. The neighbours have not objected. The covenant forbids call to prayer. Note the group pooled resources and bought the land to resell with thin margins. Black Barbadians can learn from this group.

  14. Hants
As you might be aware Abdul Pandor is a stinking dem.Its all politics and votes.Pandor is like a BWU organiser who goes out looking for people of like views and then go to George Street and demand favours at the expense of the average Barbadian and the Dems have no fortitude to see beyond their noses.Recall Barrow said he was of Jewish descent and promptly passed a law making it an offence to publicly denigrate Jews. The Dems have no guts and no vision.Muslims have their own school. They have their own burial area in the cemetery.Pandor tried to get into Parliament.Remember what occured in Fiji in 1999.Muslims should be banned from Barbados because many of them become Islamist fundamentalists and we have no place for them. When their numbers become significant they will try to force Islam down the throats of Bajans.

  15. My not so sincere apologies to you David but I beg your understanding for me and maybe other Bajancanadians.

In my neighbourhood we have different races including Muslims.
I worked with Muslims who were given permission to go to their Mosque during working hours to pray.

I do not know what the law is in Canada but I do not know of any group building a development based on race.
I know of rich areas in Toronto where the elite will not speak to nouveau riche neighbours but they cannot stop them from buying property.

Black Barbadians can learn from this group.

Well David based on your reasoning we should have learnt from White Barbadians.

  16. Gabriel I am not a member of the DLP so I don’t care who is a DLP or a BLP.

Maybe White Barbadians should follow the Muslims and build a white only gated community.

How about Black Guyanese only and an Indian Guyanese only community.

    Barbados is a free cuntry.

  17. @Hanks
This does not make sense. Are these people so ignorant, made so backward by a misguided religion, that with all that is happening in the world, all that has happened in Barbados, that these idiots could still muster the effrontery to do this? Speaks to the ineptitude of government, as widely defined, and a supine population that puts up with f**keries!

  18. @Hants old boy, what we sow now we will reap in the whirl wind.

It was approved by TP and the surrounding neighbourhood good with it.

  19. @ Pachamama,

Given our history I do not understand how this could be permitted by a black government.

I would like to hear the reason why this group of Muslims want to live in an ( Apartheid ) community.

I live in Toronto and Muslims have their own school but the majority go to public school and some go to University.

The majority live in mixed communities and there are neighbourhoods where they are the majority but I do not know anywhere in Canada that Muslims have built a Muslim only community.

what is happening in bim, just read that engineers have been severed at lime and indian engineers are coming in to do the job? why would a govt allow something like this to obtain by facilitating the process through the issuance of work permits. Barbadians should revolt against lime and the govt should let ericson know that cant happen here.

  21. These kinds of behaviours only serve to give credence to the caricatures of Muslims. We are still at a loss why anybody would want this, far less be approved by government agencies, by the immediate communities or even developed by an Islamic community under siege at all fronts everywhere. Surely all these people can’t be jackasses, can they?

  22. The retrenchment of skilled people at Lime and the hiring of salespersons to sell telecoms services are two different issues. These companies are outsourcing to reduce operating cost. It is a free market after all.

  23. overseasbajanyankee Avatar

    @David

I am speaking about the retrenchment of engineers and the subsequent importation of indian engineers according to the fired or retrenched engineers should we be allowing such behavior by any employee fire and then bring in people to do the same or similar job on work permit.

  24. How can we stop it if work permits is predicated on fdi?

  28. When a country appears to be cowardly, spineless, rudderless and leaderless, anybody and every body will come in and take advantage of the locals.
Over the years we have failed to address the blatant misuse of awarding work permits to non-nationals, Caribbean nationals excluded.
I was under the impression that the government and unions in this country, had reach some sort of agreement, that when work permits are awarded to non-nationals, “because no suitable local applicant could be found,” that a Bajan would be working closely with that permit holder, to learn the ropes,so to speak, to eventually take over.
In some cases it is said that it is the Work Permit Holder, who works closely with the Bajan who has been acting or doing that particular job, in order to learn the ropes. Like what happened to a Bajan Chemist, some years ago at one of our soft drink factories which well patronised by Bajans.
As a nation we ain’t piss when de gully out!

  33. @ Pachamama,
“Scottish Independence Now!” Well, well, well! I have just visited the Barbados Parliament building and was quite frankly blown away with the content of its Museum. Surely you meant – Barbados Independence Now!

Pachamama my visit to Barbados has confirmed to me that Barbados is NOT independent. The plight of the Afro-Bajan has scarcely improved prior to the days of our “independence”. I have witnessed a segregated and wealthy independent white community; a closeted and comfortable “coloured/ mixed blood community”, a complacent and serene black middle class and a frightening number of desperately impoverished, rural and city based African communities (the majority) dwelling in virtual slums.

The reforms required to level the playing field have not been carried out by successive governments. Surely the time has come where the citizens of our fair land lay siege to those who cling to the land at the expense of are countrymen and women. The stranglehold of the white community over Barbados must be ended.

With regards to the explosive news in yesterday’s Nation newspaper – well……..I was not surprised. The government of Barbados appears keen on expanding Barbados gene pool!

  35. Having been born in Scotland ( immigrated to Canada) but always calling Scotland hame and having watched braveheart many times my heart says lets get rid of the English lol. But my brain kicks in and says maybe we should have a rethink laddie. Having gone through a few of these referendums in Canada from our always wanting and always holding us up to ransom province of quebec. You have the hard core Quebecer that would break up Canada no matter what, you have the smart guys that know when there is chaos there is money to be made.. these are the guys that drive the split . then there is people like me who love their country warts and all. The Scots are the smartest people on the earth bar none, invented almost everything of any importance and coupled with English was the largest empire the world has known. All this to say ..I bet that nobody is going anywhere I would be shocked if Scotland left knowing how they can size up a complicated situation in a matter of minutes. When push comes to shove the money makers will vote to stay together .

    Overview of Barbados Muslims

View all articles by Suleiman Bulbulia

Recorded history of Muslims in Barbados

Research has shown that the first known Muslim to arrive in Barbados was over ninety years ago when in 1913 Abdul Rohul Amin, a silk merchant from West Bengal came to Barbados.  Soon after, some more Bengalis arrived and they shared a house in Wellington Street, in the City. Some of them also lived in Milk Market and Tudor Street (upstairs Bata Shoe Shop) in Bridgetown.  Most of these Bengalis married local Barbadian women and started families in Bridgetown.  Today many well-known Barbadians are the grandchildren of these unions.

These Muslims started the itinerant trading process, which continues up to this day.  In the early stages most of the trading was with poor Barbadians living in the country areas who found it difficult to get to Bridgetown to do their shopping.  The traders would take the bus to get their wares to the people in the country.  If there were no buses available they would walk long distances just to accommodate the customers.  In those days many Barbadians could not afford to pay cash for goods, so credit from the “Coolie man” was a welcomed commodity.  Over the years, these traders built up a relationship with Barbadians, which still remains of mutual benefit.
Following the Bengalis, Muslims from villages in Gujarat, West India arrived.  It is reported that the first of the Gujarati Muslims came in 1929.  These Muslims had set out for Brazil to cut timber but ended up in Guyana and stayed there for a while.  In Guyana they learnt that there was money in coal trading with Barbados.  They visited Bridgetown a couple of times by boat and then decided to make Barbados their home.

  38. Still waiting for an explanation David.

What is wrong with Black Bajans that whites don’t want to live near us and now Muslims segregating from us.

I would like to hear the reason why this group of Muslims want to live in an ( Apartheid ) community.

Are there any other EXCLUSIVE planned housing developments in other Caribbean islands or in Guyana?

  39. @ Hants
David can’t help you with that ….since he has been trying to avoid going with the “Bushie brass bowl” characterization…
…..but it is the ONLY explanation that works…. We are brass bowls

We think so little of ourselves and our traditions that anyone can come here and do ANY shiite …..and we assume that THEIRS must be a better way.

….shiite man, we will soon see Bajan men wearing the white dresses they wear, and answering the call to prayers….
Well….at least those who are not already wearing their trousers down -exposing their behinds – to show how much they look up to US prison inmates…

Everyone SHOULD be welcomed in Barbados……everyone that is, who wants to become a Bajan and to INTEGRATE with Bajans… people who want to keep their culture should be here ONLY for a temporary visit…not to ESTABLISH conflicting cultures.

This kinda shiite ALWAYS ends in serious trouble…..

As the polls are going in the direction of the ‘YES’, local jackasses like ‘BOOKWORM’ may yet prove himself/herself as the pedantic BRASSBOWL only someone with such a name could be.

  46. The decision to legally grant permission to develop an exclusive community in Barbados should be reversed.

Is there any other community in Barbados in this year 2014 that stops people from buying property based on race or religion?

After 50 years and billions spent in education are we so brasshol igrunt an pathetic that we are embracing segregation?

  47. @Hants

As reported an interested group pooled resources and bought the land and on sold to others. It is only after they applied for permission to build a mosque. The TP gave permission but declined call to prayer. The issue here is that it seems all too convenient this minority group got the inside track to this deal.

    @Pacha

How is Cameron meddling? Isn’t Scotland part of the UK.

  48. After 50 years and billions spent in education are we so brasshol igrunt an pathetic that we are embracing segregation?
    ………………………………………………………………………………
Did we ever object to it? Haven’t we embraced Sandy Lane, Sugar Hill, (not the one by Mayers Corner), Port St Charles, Port Ferdinand , and hundreds of gated “Strathclydes” spread across the island. Oh! and the Lord of them all Cattlewash , at times with admiration , far less a murmur.
Before the cutting back of NCC staff, the nearby Barclays Park, where thousands of Bajans flocked to, especially on weekends , for ages ,had no Life Guard (still not sure if one was ever stationed there) ,but up the road at the exclusive pretoria of Cattlewash , there were two life guards on duty.
    But we like it so.
