For centuries the British empire has wreaked havoc around the globe – partitioning countries, being a hegemony, stealing resources, imposing colonialism, imposing chattel slavery, making endless war and recently being a dependable lapdog for the Americans. There was a time when it was widely said that the British empire was so large that the sun would not set on it. Some of the Scots however, used to say that because God could not trust an Englishman in the dark, was the real reason why the sun would not set on empire, LOL. But it since has. On Thursday, September 18th, 2014 the people of the heroic William Wallace will attempt to strike a final dagger into the weakened heart of this malevolent entity once referred to as Great Britain.
Though we are generally minded to hold that there are too many countries in the world and would normally argue for less states and state-lets, in this case we are unrepentantly on the opposite side of the divide. We are contending that the historic struggle of the Scottish people for independence from Britain should start a final push to end empire once and for all. We trust that other areas like Gibraltar and The Malvinas Islands will soon follow. In these cases long time foreign occupations must be defeated, but a blow right at home is no insignificant event. None of this will encourage the predominantly monarchists, often posing as republicans, in the (English speaking) Caribbean from dismantling the British colonial structure which still rules, de jure – de facto, as can be exemplified in any regional institution.
As the ‘yes’ camp gains ascendancy in recent polls, shock waves have reached Whitehall. The criminals and the descendant of criminals are being made to feel the pain inflicted on others. All kinds of monetary and other reasons are being forwarded why the children of William Wallace should not enjoy the freedom for which he gave his life.
Those against independence, the largely monarchists, make four (4) basic sets of arguments. Firstly, they contend that Scotland will be weaker based on issues of relative smallness as they relate to issues of sovereignty. They say that small states are pushed around in the international, regional environments. Secondly, they say that the smaller the state the higher the scope of risks faced, essentially through cross-regional tax transfers. Thirdly, they use the work of the Scottish philosopher and author of the Wealth of Nations – Adam Smith, to question the ability of small states to achieve complete and guaranteed integration into the European Union. Fourthly, they argue that small states have a smaller pool of talent that could be depended upon by the elites. These are arguments of convenience, of course!
Those for independence, as led by the Scottish National Party (SLP), contend that the economics are with them; that Scotland will control 90% of the resources in the North Sea; that Scotland should dis-engage from the militarism of Britain and remove the nuclear bases from its territory; that the Scots are a nation; that Scotland is a viable state; that devolution is insufficient to satisfy the aspirations of Scottish nationhood; that the political tendencies in Scotland are distinctively different to the rest of Britain, a more leftist orientation that is largely ignored in Whitehall; that policy and not economics should dominate the discussions; that issues around a division of national debt should not prevent independence.
This government of Britain which sees nothing wrong with the partitioning of South Sudan. Nothing wrong with the supporting ISIS/IS Takfiris in Syria and elsewhere and the establishment of a fake state there. Nothing wrong with breaking up Libya in state-lets. Nothing wrong with claiming territories thousand of miles from Britain. Nothing wrong with the occupation of Palestine. The occupation of Ireland. The destabilization of world countries to help the Anglo-American empire to continue its imperial control. To them, a political blow by the Scots will send a message that the world is tired of them. That they cannot form a common front in the British isles from which to threaten the rest of the world. It’s a body blow well timed and could change geo-political calculations. On the 18th of September 2014 let us celebrate the newest nation on earth – Scotland!
