Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur
Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur

The resignation of Owen Arthur from from the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) should make Barbadians pause for several reasons. The incapacity of a former Prime Minister of fourteen years to carve out an effective role to serve his political party in the twilight of his career leaves a sour taste. If our leaders are unable to find ways to resolve conflict to the greater good of country what message does it send to the general population?

BU hesitates to join those who believe that with the exit of Arthur it leaves a clear path to unchallenged leadership for Mia Mottley. The decision by Arthur to resign from the party BUT continue to sit in parliament as an independent may yet prove to be a bane for Mottley. Unshackled from the political party that made him, he has created the opportunity to demonstrate in his post-resignation contributions to parliament why he believes the BLP has drifted from its course. For him not to record for the benefit of Hansard and to share his knowledge as a former prime minister with the people of Barbados will be a cheat on his legacy, a porakey parliament notwithstanding.

BU is of the view Arthur sincerely believes Mottley is not made of the stuff required to be a prime minister. He has stated it publicly at a press conference held at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill in 2009.  And many of his statements since has demonstrated he has not shifted his position. When Mottley was selected as opposition leader after the last general election was Arthur present in the room?

Arthur is known for his clear and colourful language when expressing himself, he has been unusually vague about what he finds so distressing about Mottley’s leadership shortcomings.    Many speculate that Arthur is not enamoured by Mottley’s lifestyle and the attendant issues.  Defamation laws may have something to do with his reluctance to be forthright and lucid on the matter, but his constant snipping at the heels of Mottley has backfired. Mottley took a gamble by organizing a protest walk not knowing the level of support she was likely to attract from the parliamentary group AND the public.  The strong show of support from the BLP parliamentary group and the public must have caused the volte-face we witnessed today. Arthur will have a lot of explaining to do in the coming days, weeks … why would a former prime minister and elder of a political party resign from his party rather than use his influence within the party to force change.

As an independent Arthur may decide to frontally challenge contributions made by the BLP and in the process give the Arthur faction that remains of Payne, Marshall and Symmonds  the bravado to continue to show dissent under Mottley’s leadership. The approach by this lot will have to be monitored closely in the coming weeks.  Say what you want Arthur is not a fool, if he and cohorts believe Mottley is not qualified to lead Barbados, the question BU must ask is have they given up the fight to deny her?

What is distressing about what is playing out in Barbados today –  the government continues to struggle managing the economy with all economic and social indicators trending in the wrong direction. Instead of a country fully mobilized to confront the challenges ahead, we continue to be embroiled in partisan political dribble. Listen to the disingenuous quotes in the news today from Minister Donville Inniss and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart reacting to Arthur’s resignation, when just a few months ago they were braying on the political platforms a strong belief that  Lucifer had reincarnated as Arthur himself.

Mia Mottley you still have work to do if you want to be the first female prime minister of Barbados.

“The more you think about it, it is difficult to accept that Arthur is just going to skulk off into the sunset never to be heard of again.”

So what is his ‘Hobson’s’ choice? To join the DLP and replace Sinckler as MoF to save Barbados from the IMF and its bitter and dread medicine of devaluation?
He certainly can’t work with Worrell the Guv of the CB or even his quisling friend Darcy Boyce. But politics and evil make strange bedfellows.

Most importantly, what kind of dignity would he have left in his moral quiver if he pretends to be cooperating with Freundel after the treatment meted out to him in the last 6 years from this man with a most acerbic tongue sharpened on the whetstone of the Queen’s English.

We shall see right through him as a fake on the sole mission of trying to discredit MAM because of her private life. But wouldn’t this be ‘clearly’ a white case of the pot calling the kettle black especially if Fumble Nose/Knows is a poor imitation of Frank White the Bajan-born cook on the Cream of Wheat box.
The days of witch-hunting are over.

Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Ask DIDI!

  5. @Hants

Many things about politics and politicians here and elsewhere do not play out in public. While lesbianism may offend some many believe MAM has exposed herself to many in high places to the extent they fear what is possible.

The caribbean’s greatest PM , Freundel Stuart, praises OSA political fortitude and wishes him well.

greatest PM??? You smoking something for sure. Something very hallucinatory.

  11. millertheanunnaki “trying to discredit MAM because of her private life.”

MAM was born into a political family. She is very well educated.

What happens in her private life is her business unless it negatively affects her ability to be a leader.

  12. On the day after it seems the Bees are more determined to bury Owen than to praise him. My objection to Owen’s BLP had more to do with the arrogance it displayed after holding the reins of power for so long. Who can forget the statements of Liz when the Leader of the DLP asked to tour Greenland (the same Liz Thompson that the DLP sponsored for the job with the UN Agency) or the weekly pompasetting of Noel Lynch. How about George Payne? Enough said, but Owen to his credit tried to rein them in by firing them (later reinstating them)

How about the wealth that many of them accumulated during their years in power? One should examine the aspiring PMs Assets never mind the flimsy piece of paper brandished as a “declaration” post 2008 election.
Owen had a difficult job, he came at a time when the ship of state was floundering and he restored some semblance of stability. His leadership and the country’s ability to attract offshore business helped stem the tide of youth emigration. It was a time when the economies of friendly nations were in overdrive and many of that money found its way to Barbados. The construction industry boomed, tourism boomed and all seemed well with the world, we were the envy of our neighbours and our chest expanded with pride at statements e.g. “Punching above our weight” from the UN Secretary General and at our placement among the worlds top 30 developing countries. I don’t pretend to know much about economics but friends much more knowledgeable than myself and who have access to confidential information inform me that Owen’s stewardship and ability to explain and demonstrate that knowledge kept those pesky rating agencies at bay during his time.

The man had a prickly personality, he didn’t suffer fools gladly but all of us have quirks in our makeup fortunately they are only exposed to family and close friends. Leaders have no such protection and their faults and idiosyncrasies are exposed to the entire world and become the subject of gossip and speculation.

Owen having worn the mantle of leadership probably feels some empathy for Freundel and is now more inclined to have a pragmatic approach rather than adopting an opposing position simply for opposing sake. I look forward to seeing how he operates as an “independent” who can freely speak his mind away from the constraints of Party position.

Good luck I thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

  13. @ Pumping Pearlie,

The interesting thing, is, if Arthur now criticizes, he will come out looking estranged and bitter, not independent, not after his 15 years as leader.

I said already, he has made a gross error.

  14. @Miller

A man does not hold the job of PM for 14 years and not know ‘things’. This is Barbados and he walked the corridor of supreme power given our system of political management. To repeat, Arthur is no fool and you and MAM would do well not to underestimate him. He is well read and understand politics in Barbados. He embarked on a plan which failed him on the day MAM pulled her parliamentary colleagues and members of the public, he will have a plan. B.

  15. @Sargeant,

That is how I read it too. Arthur would rather maintain a stalemate in Parliament and let Stuart blubber along, than allow Mia to take control now.

    Interesting.

I totally agree if Mottley were to continue to lead, Arthur would not assist Mottley in winning a seat, remember she had her mother giving away money in Maynards Housing area in the lead up to the last election, so much so she asked Benn how much money he needed to makethe campaign bite, and to his good name and his good honest manner he refused her money.

  19. Hants

Many things about our private lives do not play out in the public, so what’s your point? And who cares whether or not Lesbiamism affronts the conscience of those selected few. Homosexuality for some: amounts to Nothing more than a moral issue and as you well know, morality is relative to its time and place. Now, it is not my intention to change the nature of the debate, between a shouting match of right and wrong good and evil moral- relativism verses moral- absolutism. I just didn’t see the importance of mentioning someone’s sexual orientation, in what is by all intents and purposes a political debate.

Don’t you think that MAM knows many things about him too!
It’s a pity he was not able to use his political acumen honed during his long tenure to convince the electorate in February 2013 he is a better man than Fumble. If Fumble of all political leaders can beat him what does that say about the fallen colossal?

Why don’t you accept the fact OSA is a spent force and played his last poker political hand and has lost, big time. He is broke and needs to leave the gambling room.

What he thinks he knows about MAM was dogging her prior to February 2013.

The electorate is no longer interested in hearing anything he has to say at this stage about MAM. Maybe if he had remained the LOTO in February 2013 instead of the coward walking away (again) he would resonate with the people
The man is just a burnt-out vindictive political codger that continues to damage his dwindling legacy and contribution to the political landscape of Barbados.
What is he waiting for? To attend his own political funeral or the real one?

  21. @Miller
We shall see right through him as a fake on the sole mission of trying to discredit MAM because of her private life.
    ++++++++++++
Why the focus on her private life? Aren’t there allegations that she co-opted the COP to spy on Bajans? That to me is a much more serious charge than any private proclivities. I also think that the majority of Bajans don’t care one way or another about this so called “private life” however when private actions become the fodder of public scorn in certain circles and can have a damaging effect on Barbados and its people then we have to sit up and take notice.

    Perhaps that is Owen’s dilemma.

  22. @Miller

Arthur will now have to decide how much of his own blood he wishes to shed to slay the beast which he believes threatens.

  23. Hants

How is it morally acceptable for an adult male, to married an eight year old child, and then commence sexual intercourse with her at the age of twelve? Well, this was the norm in the Roman Empire and it was thought to be morally acceptable at the time. Now, Hants are you aware of the fact that homosexual practices were accepted by some emperors within the Roman Empire?

  24. the call for bipartianship has been the mantra by Bu..nowis just a good time as any. most notable are the blp yardfowls who are quick to bite the hand that fed them for fourteen years as there chief maker makes a diffucult choice of Country over Party…

  25. David it would be better if Owen just leaves MAM alone. He should focus on writing a book or books.

He is no longer a member of the BLP so he should “lef dum to duh self”.

AS a loyal DLP supporter and lover of Barbados I am appealing to Owen to use your vast knowledge to help Barbados.

That’s a serious breach of the law.
Then like the myriad charges of corruption, graft and misappropriation of public funds made against OSA and his colleagues let the ruling administration prosecute the wrong doers.

You want to be nothing goes so! Like Greenverbs Parris, politicians and their buddies are above the law. Ask Stinkliar if he has collected the taxes due on the gratuity payments made by CLICO to greenverbs.

I could not agree with you more, miller.

To think that for the last six years this DLP especially Fumble and Stinkliar have demonised OSA that to think that he would ever dream to join with them, if he does go, will forever define the man.

Just think back to the Stinkliar’s first response to OSA in the 2008 budget, that man lambasted OSA,( I felt so sorry for him) and then in every budget response since the liar became the MOF. During Fumble’s first budget contribution in 2008, he insulted OSA beyond the pale and said he was like an emperor with no clothes on. Recently he told OSA that with the world economy as it is, there is need for economists and he aint hear no one asking for OSA. Dont forget last year during the election, those attacks on OSA were brutal. They went for his jugular!

All I can say is if OSA thinks that because he cannot be leader he will destroy the BLP, he can try. He was plotting an overthrow of Mottley but when he saw the response on Thursday that even George Payne joined, he realised that his ship was sunk.

I would like to warn Mia not to respond to any barbs he throws at her. When someone cusses you and you ignore them, they would be the one who feel badly.

Ignore him and he will go away! His friend Mount Gay might kill him!

Thanks for your service to Barbados OSA but the BLP does not belong to you!

  30. I was wondering what Owen was going to do.

As part of the BLP, as former PM under the BLP banner, as someone loyal to the BLP, he made a decision which even the most astute of us BU-ians could not and did not predict, he resigned.

So let the ole man tell wunna how this gine play out dennn

It is not if Arthur knows anything about Mia, the man does not do blusters..his was a “high science” move.

“I have to leave the party intact, it is not my intention to destroy the BLP and WHEN I do what I must do, in the similar vein of his rationale cum Environmental Levy/Solid Waste Tax, IT MUST NOT DESTROY the BLP!!”

It would have made no sense to undertake his unrelenting attack at Mia from within because when the Mia boat sinks, he would have been in that boat.

I see that a few of you, the Pompassetting Pearlies, the Chaucers and the David[BU] have become privy to the info and unlike the others are not tied up in the lifestyle issue that has entrapped the rabble.

No one really give a lick of spit if Mia’s lifestyle outside of Parliament is at variance to “what our Puritan standards” profess in public, but adhere to in private.

We dont really care how many doggies Dr. Jerome ** or WeJones are supposed to be sucking each week nor the amount of pussies Sandra (the masculine of wives) or Lynette Hold (the feminine of him) are tribbing pun a week, we have “allowed” that to “pass”. As long as it ain’t our doggie or our wife/sister/muddah pokey, we cool wid dat.

    As is Owen.

So you have to ask yourself why, after the first “indiscretion” with the syrup issue, and the litany of events that another blogger listed so well earlier, Edutech, Dodds and its BOLT, and mostly the wiretapping, why is Owen so relentless? I cannot jes be for bitting out a pokey?

You need to listen to BT, Pompasetting and David [BU]. When history records this chapter, rather paragraph, sorry line for Bulbados, (for we are but a line in history’s pages) WHEN Owen does expose his hand, either directly or indirectly (I am reliably informed that he has a contingency plan should he, like all of us, be among those “fools who, this night thy soul is required of thee”) even those of us who think that “he jes trying to tek way de opportunity of a girl to be PM of Bulbados, dat he shudda gone home evah sence and all of that, we gine be quite perturbed to hear the truth.

Owen is no fool, he has enough money to go home and never drive a nex stroke.

Owen has “the thunder” so let us sit and watch how a strategist does this.

  31. i can,t help but feel a disgusted sympathy for those who would frown upon a person having the right to choose between party and country .but choose country first..it is apparantly clear that after 24 hours of piss poor attacks byby the blp yardfowls that there are the ones who prefer to see this rift continue than to embrass the call for honest leadership by Mia…so funny to watch how the bees have turned their lord and master OSA into …a political boogeyman.lol

  32. it is truly amazing to see some of you political jackasses braying.

Is it not the lease bit eye raising that some BLP MPs on the march wore red and a day later, OSA did the same? did Mia not ask all to wear white? how that get past some of you bright sparks?

Peter Wickham (yes Peter you can hide behind a name but you can’t hide your comments) is on this blog saying shite about the same OSA while doing Mia’s duty work but tell us Peter. Mia has said that 70000 people voted for the BLP in the last election. How could 3000-3500 people in a march be a success?

Also why would Arthur join the DLP? if he is power hungry as many say he is, how will he get the power in the DLP?

In short, Mia should be catching her ass right now. The public is cursing Arthur for this move and he has said he not running in the next election. This means he is now free to expose what he believes is the real problem with her and it has nothing to do with her life style and frankly, her life style is her business and nobody else.

make no mistake, this is the 1st shoe to drop. Arthur has nothing now to lose and everything to gain. so if he drop files on Mia and Mia drop files on him, who has the most to gain or lose?

    That is the real question.

  33. oh and one more thing. History has shown us that OSA was help along the way to becoming a PM. Now he is doing the same for someone else. Just had to add that incase you wanted to know what he had to gain.

  34. What do we make of Kerri Symmonds acting up last week Sunday by making the statement of the Sunday talk show he was not going to speak on Mia’s platform, then he turns up to walk and Arthur resigns. Can we connect dots?

  35. Michael, I do believe Owen Arthur will be an active member of the DLP in the not to distant future. All points in this general direction whether you or anyone chooses to believe it.

  36. are you not a supporter of the DLP Dompey? how would you feel about that move? tell us please.

  37. I am one who believes that OSA’s departure from the BLP is a strategic move to assist someone in the BLP to challenge MAM for the top spot. I don’t think the political infighting in the BLP has at all ceased- remember Kerry’s words of less than a week ago, and his inability to find a white shirt in his wardrobe for the march- and so MAM is still going to have some work to do to consolidate her position. OSA’s leaving the party allows him the opportunity to wax philosophically both inside and outside of Parliament on any subject under the sun without censure, and his absence from the BLP means MAM has less excuses for when she fouls up, as she can’t blame OSA for undermining her.

  38. AC…..you are shamelessly trying to recruit Owen Arthur to the DLP after all the negative, nasty things you said about the man, who happens to have a more active brain than you……..lol

By the way, i think Fruendel is tacky and classless, if you are going to give someone the keys for a purple, pitch pine house that was built with taxpayer’s money, you do not gush about the abhorrent and dirty conditions the poor family lived in before you ‘gave’ them the house, they too pay taxes because they have to buy the vat taxed food in Barbados……tacky and classless Fruendel Stuart…….nasty political gimmicks. I am sure that is not the only family in Barbados who are down on their luck and need housing from the taxpayer’s purse, what about those who just lost their homes to fire……i detest politicians.

David Symmonds is not over it as yet, there is a group that they neither trust her or she trust them, some like Toppin have openly said that they will never be led by a person like Mottley, I keep saying that her problems are only now beginning, to add continued pressure to her feeble leadership I would not be at all surprised if Symmonds used his brain and were to join Arthur as independent, it makes good mileage for Symmonds as he to has a problem with the Mottley styled leadship.
