"...with expectations great..."
“…with expectations great…”

As wars and rumours of wars continue to beset the globe, terrorists aggressively expressing themselves hither thither and yon, amidst the fury, an idyllic  little island 21 miles long and 14 miles wide  – economic challenges notwithstanding – vies for the title of ‘one of the happiest places on earth.

It is the weekend and the main concern of the majority of inhabitants is to enjoy the annual Crop Over activities, pick a lime, collect a sea bath, prepare for attendance at Church, lounge on the patio to enjoy a cool northeasterly away from the beam of a hot sun. Oftentimes the island people take for granted our island paradise amidst the mainly political rancour that is more bark then bite.

Do we have problems to solve, hell yes. Should we continue to work together, Barbadians one and all, to overcome challenges that are omnipresent although called on to battle above our weight class sometimes? We must!

What can be deduced from world events is that there is no relationship between man’s intelligence and the ability to resolve and avoid conflict. It is easy to go with the flow, to align with what is popular, AND, forget Barbados must always be defined by Barbadians. If we relinquish our right to define Barbados then what is the point to be called Barbadian?

If we allow our national psyche to be diluted or absorbed by external forces and relinquish our assignment to be guardians of our heritage and firm craftsmen of our fate – how do we explain to our brave forefathers – when we meet in the spirit world – who sowed the seed?

Barbados has enjoyed an enviable reputation up to now because Barbadians in the immediate post Independence period translated a vision for Barbados, it was not dictated to. We fearlessly told the mighty (who ever wore the label) we wanted to be friends of all and satellites of none, and get this, we were respected for it.  Although we have to adapt, we have to change, what we can never surrender is our assignment to guard our heritage, that which defines who we are as people and as a country.

The dismantling of Bajan symbols from  the landscape, a political directorate bereft of the fierceness to serve the people, disregarding the indigenous culture that use to value personableness. BU remains optimistic we have not passed the point of having no doubts or fears. And that upward and onward we shall go, inspired, exulting, free. And greater will out nation grow in strength and unity.

One of the strands of our enviable reputation, has been our stable political management since Independence, this occurred under BOTH B and D. One reason, politicians and political parties accrued political capital from which to draw. Without political capital governments and politicians are unable to take unpopular decisions in the interest of the people. This is where we find ourselves.

This post shows that we were living on hype for most of the years after independence. The hype has finally been exposed for what its worth. Maybe, we could have continued in our delusions for a little longer but we elected a bunch of idiots without the skills to pilot a pond boat. And the bottom has fallen out of everything.

The post indicates that we ARE STILL living on hype.
Despite the fact that the hype has finally been exposed for what its worth.we continue in our delusions. After all the leaders can find a new set of taxes next year.

Here on BU we talk shite daily for that is what defines who we are as people and as a country. We pull down the good folk and promote the illiterates and crooks, and boast that we have a black government composed of puppets of the white folk who really have money or access to money.

We quote Benjamin Franklin and Livy and Shakespeare etc etc and say we are bright………then we do shite and vote for shite hounds (I think those are genuine Bajan words- words of our culture) and spout DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR.
    HILARIOUS!
    AMAZING
We are no longer in plenty……..BUT WE ARE CERTAINLY IN GREAT TIME OF NEED!

  11. Barbados is 23 miles long ? What the fact!

  12. I like the theme expressed in the article it is full of optimism and hope and to quote Jack Layton “Love is better than anger, hope is better than fear and optimism is better than despair”.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    It was not always so.

There was a conscious effort to change it but it can’t be eradicated.

If you travel around Barbados the evidence of what preceded the crap is there to see and it date’s back to the 1600’s.

You will find “Hope” in Christ Church, just outside of St. David’s Village, named so long before there was even a St. David’s Church. “Hopewell” is in the Sayers Court area.

In St. Thomas you will find “Strong Hope” just as you leave Proute’s Gully, just north of Applewaithes.

There is “Hope” in St. James as you go up Orange Hill on your left.

In St. Andrew there is “Hopewell” going up Coggins Hill before you reach Chalky Mount School.

In St. John there is “Small Hope” as you pass Verdun on the way to Gall Hill. You will see the ruins in the field on your left where you enter Eastmont.

In St Lucy you will find another “Hope” just north of Spring Hall Factory.

In St. Peter you will find the remnants of the boiling house of “Small Hope” just south of Portland.

There is “Hopeland” in St. Philip by the Home Agricultural Station, and of course “Hopefield”.

In St. George there is “Hope” on the road to St. Judes Church long before there was a St.Judes Church. Also “Drax Hope” or as it was known real early, “Irish Hope”.

That leaves St. Joseph and St. Michael as the only parishes I can’t think of anywhere in which Hope figures in the name.

Maybe someone can help me find Hope in these two parishes!!

So what’s with all this “Hope” that abounds all over Barbados?

There was a time in Barbados when we lived on a different plain.

Fortunately, our ancestors left Barbados well signposted for the times when their descendants might lose their way …

….. but unfortunately this generation is just too blind to see.

    Try the exercise for “Content”.

That was what we used to be!!

  14. Both these intellectually and politically backward, bankrupt and discredited DLP and BLP disorganizations MUST ABSOLUTELY PERMANENTLY GO in this country.

Both these corrupt disgraceful anti-people DLP and BLP governments have been systematically destroying more and more of this country and MUST ABSOLUTELY PERMANENTLY GO in this country.

The broad masses and middle classes of people have less than 4 years to rid the political governmental landscape of the country of these ramgoat ramshackled disorganizations, or else Barbados will in less than 71/2 – 12 1/2 years become more and more and in so many regards like Jamaica was in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and has been up to this point in time where – on its current trajectory – it has reached a point of no return from the vicious social political material financial dedevelopment ruinous cycles it has been experiencing.

Therefore, the “right” types of able accountable disciplined coalition building people-centered nationalist developmentalist political functionaries must be elected in at least two appropriate national elections by the vast majority of adult voters TO ABSOLUTELY PERMANENTLY REPLACE the members of those two contemptible factions in this country.
