Are you sure you meant to write “black” shirts or did you intend to write “yellow” shirts? 🙂

  2. for all those simpletons..that keep returning to the sandi era .a time when social media and access to internet was only limited to a few those days are over and now the majority can make their own conclusion based on facts and crtical thinking..no longer are people willing to accept others decisions without taking into account the overall consquences..btw the slow response of the people towards the marches might be an indication from what most had felt was more of a hindrance than a help as a result of the past marches.

City march Robert “Bobby” Clarke (FP)

    By Sanka Price | Tue, June 17, 2014 – 12:11 AM

BARBADIANS ARE “VEX as hell” about what is happening in the country but frightened to say anything, argues attorney Robert “Bobby” Clarke.

That’s why he’s seeking police permission for a three-hour march from Independence Square to Government Headquarters on Friday to draw the Freundel Stuart administration’s attention to the frustration of Barbadians.

Clarke told the DAILY NATION he sent his request to the Commissioner of Police yesterday seeking permission for the march to ensure he was in accordance with the requirements as set out in the Public Order Act Cap 168 (a), which outlines the process for such matters.

He said his letter was sent three days ahead of the event, it named the organiser, outlined the purpose of the march, its route, hours involved and an estimate of the number of people expected to participate.

Please read the full story in today’s DAILY NATION, or in the eNATION edition.

I suggest a good old fashioned Hand written petition, collect genuine names and addresses as many as we can. Remember, when it comes to citizen activism and dealing with government, your best weapons are documentation, patience, and tenacity. Understand that what you want may take time, but don’t act like you have it—press, document, and hold your officials’ feet to the fire. In some cases, they may even appreciate it!
One piece of paper can count for as many as 10.000 genuine people… In front of the press would make a real statement world wide…..

Bobby Clarke will get his permission to march this Friday, early Saturday morning by hand delivery.
What is the reason for marching? what is it people are trying to say to the GOB by marching?

Its bloody hard to create a ground swell when those who are leading are known to have an interest.

  9. Ron:
You could only be one of Bobby Clarke out side children!
    David:
It is alright for neophytes here to get behind anonymous handles and talk about march. I would not call the country but one day I participated in a march. A person was planted by the authorities and at the signal did some thing very stupid. Many of us ended locked up for the night or barely escaped because they knew the back alleys.

When we marched we had a view in mind a system or strategy; going out there for going out there sake does not make any sense. if you want to bring down the government you have to be determined to stay the course and some will be destroyed. You know why they like to recruit young people for war they have no sense of fear and are full of stupidity. I have marched with quality people and Bobby Clarke would be scraping the bottom of the barrel!!

Island, do not let the police beat up on those perky bubbies you hear!!

This is my position and all of you here could like it or lump it!!

Of that I am sure Mr. Clark; but understand the sentiment here. You need to be clear what you are marching for so all those behind you are clear. A complicated agenda will help none of us. We either need the immediate resignation of Stuart and Sinckler or early elections so we can fire them. The time for half-measures passed 18 months ago.

  13. David:
You may be in the world of theory but I have had the experience!! What people are committing themselves to is nothing trivial and they should know that!! Frustrated Business man is right; you have to know what you are marching for. This is BU chum buddy get together down Farley Hill Park!!

  15. @Lemuel

This is Barbados for godsakes. The man is very clear the purpose of the protest is to highlight the suffering of Barbadians in the prevailing economic climate. D you want a 10 point plan to support the march, what? You want to wait for 4 more years by doing more of the same? What the hell do you want? If you have a better approach, and if you have experience with marches based on your earlier comment, why don’t you step up or SHUT UP.

  16. Frustrated Businessman Avatar
    Frustrated Businessman

Highlighting the suffering of Bajans is not a goal with consequences. Pm can look out his castle window, nod his head in agreement and go back to sleep. A call for resignation or elections is a different thing altogether; consequences of previous poor performance.

  17. @Frustrated Businessman

Maybe your goal but NOT that of the organizers.

  18. I suppose no one would really like the world facts on justice first before they comment, but hear they are;
An effective criminal justice system is a key aspect of the rule of law, as it constitutes the natural mechanism to redress grievances and bring action against individuals for offenses against society. An effective criminal justice system is capable of investigating and adjudicating criminal offences effectively, impartially, and without improper influence, while ensuring that the rights of suspects and victims are protected.
It consists of 97 variables combined to form the following seven sub-factors:
    SUB-FACTORS
    1.Criminal investigation system is effective
2.Criminal adjudication system is timely and effective
3.Correctional system is effective in reducing criminal behaviour
    4. Criminal justice system is impartial
5.Criminal justice system is free of corruption
6.Criminal justice system is free of improper government influence
7.Due process of law and rights of the accused

    Most highly ranked is America.
    1. In cases where the state is prosecutor it must prove charges beyond doubt.
    2. Jury system of non-professional jurors from the location where the incident arose.
    3. Right to confront witnesses — ie. cannot be convicted on hearsay or by confidential witnesses not subject to cross examination, and the right to cross-examine them.
    4. Right to have the court compel witnesses to appear.
    5. Absolute right to counsel (and even state supplied one in criminal cases)
    6. Right to a public trial (no secret procedures)
    7. Absolute right to appeal.
    8. Everyone’s testimony has equal weight.
    9. The adversary system: Your lawyer represents Your interests only & not the government’s or god’s or any one else’s
    10. Confidentiality: everything you say to your lawyer is confidential.
Many countries have SOME of the above protections. None have them All.
But you could also argue the English legal system! It is also the MOST adopted system in the world!!

  19. Let’s also have the merchant class in Barbados marching, they benefit financially from the island, oh i forgot, they give election campaign funding to both DLP/BLP each and every election, that would make things awkward.

I gather Lemuel has had personal contact with Bobby and it left a rather sour taste.

Putting that aside, it is a start, and yeah the problem is getting people to want to follow Bobby around, but, Bajans need to do something and really soon to send a message to both political parties that it cannot be business as usual with all that went on before and has the potential to continue for another 50 years at the expense of the majority on the island, if changes are not made right away..

  20. David, you ought to know by now that LEMUEL is all puff and very little fire. The man shoots off at the mouth for the sake of shooting off his food- trap. He speaks as though he knows what he is talking about, but when you examine what he has to say, you know that the NINCOMPOOP does not know what he is talking about. ” People need to know what there are marching for…. isn’t suffering enough cause to aroused the collective – conscience of the masses and start them on the road to SOCIAL- )PROTEST?

  21. Life Changer

There is no such thing as an effective criminal justice system, as long as the faults and failings of man comes into play. By all intents and purposes, the American judicial system ranks amongst the best in the world, but yet, everyday innocent people are convicted and sent to jail for crimes their did not commit.

  22. David;
Because this is Barbados, I am writing again. A march about what Bobby Clarke sees as an opportune moment for anarchy in this Island is nothing to promote!!

    Dompey:
You tek that medication yet; it don’t look so!!

Yes, Well Well the people have to careful that they are not lead like lambs to the slaughter for the wrong reasons!!

If every body vex wid that then so be it!!

  23. @ Bobby Clarke

What kind of a country are we to live in if the people have to ask the guardians of the elites for permission to protest against these very elites. That is the first demand that must be made.. We know that the Public Order Act was designed to limit freedoms. We know that stinking Errol Barrow passed it to control you and others. We know Barrow was minded to kill activists in Barbados you challenged the political-economy order using this same police force of oppression. We know that the people of Barbados never supported their own interests and people like us. Now that all is nearly lost, maybe, just maybe, they’ll have some time for something else. Something other than a BLP/DLP duopoly of fascism.

  24. LE MULE SHUT UP YOU STUPID MULE!

  25. Lemuel

Have you heard off the American civil right leader, black- panther and Trinidadian born Stokely Carmichael? And are you cognizant of the kind of impacted this man has had on the civil- right movement in America during the 1960’s?

  26. Lemuel………knowing Bobby personally, i do share your concern, but a message needs to be sent, hopefully they will find another forum with which to send that message to the political class that does not appear to be a setup in the minds of some.

A petition is perfect, but it has to be acted upon and followed through.

  27. Why, in a Democracy, whose existence depends on the citizens of this country, should the citizens of this country request PERMISSION to march if the citizens are not satisfied with the way in which their democracy is being managed?
This sounds very Colonial and quite frankly, has the makings of a white led control mechanism dating back to de “Mudda Countrie”.
When they’ve had enough of the sh**e, should they request permission to riot too?
    Get serious Barbados. Get serious!
We have this mentality about being very pious, passive, permissive and virtuous, but none of these pseudo-admirable qualities has helped one inch, one cent, one idea or one task towards finding and engaging in a solution for Barbados.
I guess if the citizens got up one day and started to “down tools” and call for a National Referendum on the replacement of the “leadership” of the country, they would have had to have requested permission to exercise clear thought and good judgement too.
Wunnah mekking nuff igrunt sport bout round hey!

    De Higher De Monkey Climb

Half of today’s “political class” has managed to bamboozle some of our 98% literate population into seeing something evil in a march and that it MUST have some tangible outcome the very next second, otherwise it is a waste of time and unpatriotic. A march, for those of you 98% literates that are so consumed by the light emanating from backside of the “political class” members that you cannot see an inch on front of the nose by which you are being led, is a form of protest that brings AWARENESS to a situation. The marches are being discouraged and defused by all sorts of (well at least to me and my circle) OBVIOUS tactics because of fears of a groundswell that needs only a ripple to start. If marches were pointless, what was the purpose of the marches against discrimination, women’s rights, worldwide outrage at the Boko Haram issue, adult suffrage protests, civil rights, the list goes on and on. Mass protests are “the single most powerful, peaceful way to bring about social change is for people to stand together publicly on behalf of an important cause.” Let de politcians trick wunna all de time so.

To me it’s a start. I see some kinks in the approach (the 10am time on a weekday when men ‘fraid and trying to hold on pun a job is the one that leaps out to me, Mr. Clarke). But it is a start. It only takes one brave person.

The outcome I hope to see is that Bajans think LONG AND HARD before putting an X next to a man name for foolishness.

  30. The Watcher:

“Why, in a Democracy, whose existence depends on the citizens of this country, should the citizens of this country request PERMISSION to march if the citizens are not satisfied with the way in which their democracy is being managed?”

Which democratic country are you aware of that does not require permission for protests, demonstrations etc.? There are security, control (crowd, traffic) and other concerns involved.

  31. Watcher, it takes that one special person to aroused the collective conscience of the masses. It has happened during the Haitiaan revolt and it can quite possibly happen in the small island of Barbados. Marcus Gravey a West Indian immigrant, was the first black man to have aroused the collective – conscience of the discontented black masses, and inspired them to do great things for themselves.

  32. Watcher

History is a testament to the fact that Adulf Hitler through the gift of his oracular ability, aroused the collective- conscience of the Germany people and inspired them to do great evil.

Supreme Court To Hear Professor Bain’s Injunction Application This Afternoon

    Published: Friday June 13, 2014 | 1:52 pm

The Supreme Court is this afternoon slated to hear an application by Professor Brendon Bain, the Director of the Regional Coordinating Unit of the Caribbean HIV/Training Network (CHART) who has been fired by the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Professor Bain who is being represented by the law firm Henlin Gibson Henlin, is seeking an injunction to bar the UWI from removing him as the CHART director
The professor was fired last month.

He is contending that the action of the UWI breached his constitutional rights of freedom of expression and thought.

Professor Bain is also contending that the UWI breached due process as he was not given a hearing before a fair or impartial tribunal before being fired.

In addition to the injunction, Professor Bain is seeking a declaration that the letter terminating his contract is null void and of no effect and should be quashed.

He is also seeking damages and legal cost.

Professor Brendon Bain has filed a suit in the Supreme Court challenging the termination of his contract as the director of the Regional Coordinating Unit of the Caribbean HIV/Training Network (CHART).

The contract was terminated last month.

In his suit, Professor Bain is contending that the action of the University of the West Indies to terminate his contract breached his constitutional rights of freedom of expression and thought.

He is asking the court to award damages.

In announcing his dismissal, the UWI had said it became increasingly evident that Professor Bain had lost the confidence and support of a significant sector of the community which the CHART programme is expected to reach.

Professor Bain’s termination came after he provided an expert report in a high-profile case in Belize, in which a gay man challenged the constitutionality of an 1861 law that criminalises men having sex with men.

Following his statement in the case, some 35 advocacy groups had written to the vice-chancellor of the UWI, Professor E. Nigel Harris, indicating that they had lost confidence in Bain as the head of CHART.

The groups also called for Professor Bain to be removed.

Bain Stays.. Secures Injunction Barring Dismissal

The Supreme Court has granted an injunction barring thedismissal of Professor Brendon Bain as the director of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Training Network until his suit against the University of the West Indies (UWI) is heard.

Justice Carol Edwards granted the injunction this afternoon allowing for Professor Bain to keep his job for the time being.

Bain who is challenging the termination of his contract also wants the court to award damages.

The UWI terminated his contract effective Sunday June 15, after claiming that his constituents had lost confidence in him.

It followed his decision to provide an expert report on homosexuality and HIV in a court matter brought by a gay man in Belize who was challenging a law that makes it illegal for men to have sex with men.

Attorney-at law Georgia Gibson-Henlin, who is representing Bain, says a date has not yet been set for the trial.

  35. Georgie Porgie

Freedom of expression and thought must fall within the prescribed limites of constitutional protection, but that is for the courts to decide. Because I have a constitutional right to freedom of expression and thought, I still cannot get on social media and threaten the life of the president of the United States of America. Speech that intends to cause harm or disrupted the proper order of civil society is deemed unconstitutional by any standard of judgment.

“Which democratic country are you aware of that does not require permission for protests, demonstrations etc.? There are security, control (crowd, traffic) and other concerns involved.”

    Lets get serious here.

Problem: Selfishness, causes problems in many a society.

Solution: People wish to peacefully march to display their discontentment”

Problem: The selfish people wish to carry on at any costs and will seek to “protect” themselves by in-acting laws and regulations to limit and stifle free expressions of discontentment

Solution: Civil Unrest,Civil War and Riot!

Because this archaic method of attempted control is adopted by all doesn’t mean its the way to go about correcting the issue dear sir/mam. The common thread here is the selfishness and greed of the few.
I’m done commenting on this! Critical thinking and analysis is a very desirable trait that’s being slowly eroded on this forum.
    Do wuh unnah like!

Social protest is one such pathway that the silent discontent can find release. There are many others such as the court pathway etc….

I knew little of David Thompson because prior to migrating to the US, Thompson was an inconsequential figure in the party.

I spoke to Errol Barrow practically, every week when I was a young lad packing groceries at Home Center Limited.

The Women Suffrage Movement was started by one women, who felt that the American women was fit to vote. And her individual effort galvanized the collective – conscience of the American women and won them right to vote on the national level in 1920.
