It is time the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation draws the line regarding the dress code of its female’s news presenters. It is neither pleasing to the eyes or for the image of CBC. A single night does not go by without receiving a call regarding some of the outlandish attire that is worn by some of the female news presenters for my opinion or comment. I must be honest with you and let you know that when certain presenters are on, that I would always turn my television set off because of their attire. I have been meaning for quite some time to comment on the matter, although a few weeks ago I was prompted to write a short article after realizing that my entire television screen was being consumed by one of its main presenters and the gaudy African garment that she was wearing then and which is always the case in terms of her wardrobe which appears to be only African garments.

Recently, I received a call asking if I was watching the news and what are my thoughts of the presenter’s apparel, before I could state my opinion, the person proceeded to tell me that the presenter look like an over loaded Christmas tree and it was not pleasing to the eyes. Well, I certainly had to agree with the caller, because the bright pink and black trimmed outfit plus the necklace did not do the presenter any justice. Two nights later the same person called me back regarding the dress that the female weather presenter was wearing, to tell you the truth; it was very difficult to discern the dress from the clouds and the currents and which is the norm for this particular presenter in terms of her choice of outfits because of her body structure.

When one looks at the International news, both the female and male news presenters compliment each other in their attire; but that is not the case at the CBC TV8. It is very pleasing to see that all the male presenters at CBC are always nattily attired while the females with the exception for one or two are poorly dressed, which does not compliment the men’s attire. There are guidelines for how one should dress when they are on camera, why are these guidelines not been adhered to?  Who is responsible to enforce and see that these guidelines are carried out? One would notice that the International female news presenters always wear a solid colour dress or a suit while the males always wear a suit. It would be in the best interest for CBC to address this matter regarding the female dress code, since CBC news is beamed all over the world and being viewed by millions of viewers and that the image being presented should be one that promotes Barbados in a positive light.

Barbados is currently rated very high in the world in terms of obesity and anyone seeing the majority of our female presenters would be inclined not to come to Barbados as a destination where fitness and health lifestyles are paramount. One can say that the male news presenters at CBC understand the importance of image or that they follow very closely the international trends of dressing as a news presenter. I guess one has to lay the blame squarely at the feet of management for this lack of professionalism among the female news presenters in terms of how they dress. It is evident that some of these ladies do not understand the Do’s and Don’ts of fashion or how to dress for the occasion, presenters attire should be more business like and not as if they are dressing for a party or a lime; which is the case for most of the ladies at CBC.

The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation is a government entity and is the eyes and mouth of the government run by a board which mandates the policies of the corporation. Although the government service does not dictate that any of its departments wear a uniform; like some private companies who make it mandatory that their employees wear a uniform, which serves to identify the company from other businesses. When one wears a uniform, it shows a sense of pride, commitment, part of and belonging to an organization. It is time that the government of Barbados implements some form of dress code for its white collar departments and not only for the blue collar worker. Barbadians are a follow pattern society which seems to pick up all the negatives and not the positives from the so called outside world. There are a lot of positive ideas out there in the world that we as Barbadians can adopt in order to be a front runner with the rest of the world. If we are going to continue to push tourism as the driving engine to promote our beautiful paradise, let us start with the image of the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation which promotes this island to millions of viewers worldwide daily.

My question would be if you were to close your eyes and just listen, would you not find that given the obvious slant your beef is really grounded in the content. …or the lack thereof?

  2. Why recommend suits for the male presenters ? Why not well tailored shirt jack suits or similar tropical designs ? If we are saying that we are presenting ourselves to the world, why can’t we read news in attire that compliments our environment? Just asking.

  3. Sophia Sayers Avatar

Those two presenters are not your “American broomsticks” that the international news favours. They are heavy set women and they wear clothing suitable to their figure type.

I am proud of CBC for even employing them as presenters. It shows Barbados and the rest of the world that “real” people can be infront of a camera daily.

As for one’s preference for African attire – Fly your heritage flag PROUD!

What a load of misleading crap no different from the sartorial pooh you are alluding to!
Very few people outside of your tiny Barbados watch CBC TV.
Get a grip on reality, man. Why not make a similar call to clean up the place?
You can start with Bridgetown with the loads of filth and garbage piled up on the sidewalks. Why not remove it the same day instead of it remaining like a constant eyesore similar to what CBC is doing to you? That is what certainly turn off visitors, not what is shown on your Mickey Mouse TV station.

  5. Oh shut up Miller….the man is right.
Those women are as suited for television as Bushie would be in our pissy Parliament.
    – TOTALLY OUT OF PLACE.

Many Bajans are obese, so no doubt this would be represented on CBC, but shiite man who wears a king size bed sheet on their damn head?
It is quite possible to be PROFESSIONAL when doing public jobs..

All the writer is calling for is the establishment and adherence to STANDARDS….
    …you Miller just like a lotta shiite…..

  6. @ Bushie

Between your obediance to a White god and the an instinctual hatred of all things African the job of of Louis Lynch has been well accomplished.

I don’t care if they came out reading the news in their nighties. This country is grinding to a halt at the hands of a nincompoop government and blog writer prefers to fiddle while Bridgetown burns. In other words, write crap about how a few women dress on TV.

You also need a life when all you and your friends could call each other to discuss is how women dress on TV.

  8. ghee…fuh christ sake shut to f..up whoever u are must be having a boring life when people call u and suggest that u gaze on female reporters attire which is mostly in line with international standards and modest .as for the african attire i find it insulting that u would be so disrespectful in your description of african attire boozo

  9. I have noticed that this blog is starting to mirror the call-in programme where a few contributors comment on EVERYTHING. Also, many important topics are hijacked by insignificant drivel and/ or personal attacks with generous doses of unnecessary profanity.
I congratulate the writer for highlighting a topic that long needed attention and while we are at it, would someone suggest to the Governor of the Central Bank that his deportment is unbefitting the office it represents and might be viewed as outdated.

  10. I used to know a Wayne Cadogan can’t tell if this is the same individual as faces may change over time but talk about growing up stupid under the Union Jack. Are Bajans suffering from a dearth of activities to embrace? If watching the news is unpalatable surely there are many organisations where they can volunteer their time and energies. Too many people sitting on their bums with nothing to do, they watch the news hopefully to be informed and all they can think about is the wardrobe of the presenters, they talk about embracing their African culture but if anyone displays it the knives come out.

To Wayne and his supporters I will pen a missive to CBC exhorting management to insist on Morning Suits and Top hats (bowlers will do) for its male presenters and formal gowns (ladies business suits will do) for the females …..and don’t forget the snooty accent.

  11. In fairness to Wayne Cadogan he is a social commentator and has posted his views on other topics. There is nothing to suggest he must only focus on politics etc. Remember he is a designer by upbringing among his many interests. Examine his message and critique based on your view. The problem with us and mankind in general is we are too intolerant of other views.

  12. @FearPlay

Sometimes we don’t know how to appreciate the good things we have and often will abuse. For the BU household it has become a chore to filter some of the crap posted but one has to appreciate that in an open forum the dull and the ignorant will have their say.

  13. Well said @David and sincere appreciation to you for your dedication and sacrifice of time in making this forum available.

  14. really meant Willie, not Louis. Willie Lynch!

  15. Waaait you want to stop my evening news entertainment Bushie? I look forward seeing what Rosemary will wear when she is on air. Sometimes she looks good other times it is hilarious. Lefff de peoples alone nuh? If they wore what the USA presenters wore wunn gine be vex because wunna gine say dem exposing too much skin by showing dem shoulders with sleeveless dresses. Wunna is a bunch of stinking hypocrites! Dem should do like Rhianna or do like the native Amerindian or African in their tribal dress.

“All the writer is calling for is the establishment and adherence to STANDARDS….”

Whose standards of dress? Europeans where in some countries some newscasters appear in the buff?

Where do you think standards are more relevant? Public health and hygiene or the subjective taste of a man as far as women dressing is concerned?
I am going to predict that the same way the economy is about to collapse because of piss-poor management and blatant failure to heed advice and be proactive is the same way the public health of Barbados will suffer the same fate unless basic health standards are maintained.

If you guys can’t even keep the place clean as a tourist destination how the hell can your expect to oversee the recovery of its economy which is about to nosedive?
It just does not require a PhD to know that basic hygiene is a sine-qua-non to a healthy environment and prosperous economy so tourism dependent.
If you can’t understand and appreciate that you, Bushie, are more brass bowl than all the Bajans put together.

  17. About the subject of discipline, we must approach EVERYTHING we do because it is about the approach and not the topical issue.

  18. right on target..another bushisims..full of sh..it talk..a man unable to come to
grips wit social structure..a man adamant in living a world where cumplusory should be a given..a man whose mind have come to a grinding halts as he awaits the next coming of a fabrication and his imaginery friend BBE.

  19. The post is absurdly interesting. It roughly mirrors the dress code for God debate. Let them wear banana skirts and ballet tights. Besides the lady routinely referred to is lusted after by BT and every other red blood. Actually I stood next to her at SC the other day – and she seemed, well, smaller.

  20. Miller

Quite. The idea that almost anyone feasts nightly on CBC is about as dotty as asking what song the sirens sang.

  21. Just goes to show how petty minded people are when the biggest problems in their lives is what a news presenter wears in an extremely hot and tropical island, i am sure they wear what makes them feel cool and comfortable as they are both plus size females, get a grip on your stupidity, i thought the intent was to listen and watch THE NEWS……steupss….the Bushman…….hush, lol, i even agree with Sargeant.

  22. Well eff wunna want the presenters to wear a uniform when reading the news the all we viewers should wear one listening to it! Wunna really tink dat we viewers care bout what dem wearing???? We sooo want to be like the “White” countries. We tek dem God, we tek dem justice system, we tek dem standards for beauty and now we trying to be a bit original wunna complaining. Bushie I wunda what yuh does be wearing under yuh grass skirt? No doubt some long johns nuh?

  23. Eff I had to present the news wunna wud see me bare breasted with my skull pendant round muh neck and some war paint pon muh face whenever I feel like I want tah connect wid my mudder country.

  24. Fat people can be as competent as bony people.

Colourful Afrocentric attire should not be a problem on Barbados TV.

  25. PS wid my perky breasts fuh wunna ole farts.

  26. Hants…….A BLACK MAJORITY COUNTRY, mind you.

  27. @ Hamilton Hill
That’s why its called teleVISION, if you want audio only its called RADIO.

  28. No surprises here….
Bunch of brass bowls who fail to grasp the basic point made by the writer….
There needs to be professional standards…..FULL STOP.
Who the hell said they must be European standards or even African ones….why not Barbadian or even CBC standards…?

…but surely everyone putting on “what ever the hell they feel like” sounds like the kind of shiite one would come to expect from Bajan brass bowls.
…is it any wonder we need outsiders to come and manage every shiite…?
…and when they come and impose THEIR standards we all jump to attention and say how well organized they are….

    Talk bout BB’s
This is just the way our politicians operate too….every man do what the ass he like….and wunna surprise wunn downgraded…?
….and our civil servants, and lawyers, and doctors, and most of wunna brass bowl morons….low standards.
…next thing yuh know ac pun the people TV with all she poxy legs exposed…. 🙂 …just because she is a bid D….

Wunna ever heard about DISCIPLINE? …about CORPORATE STANDARDS? …about aiming to be world class?
…..or everyone just looking to please themselves with their petty fetishes?

GOOD ARTICLE WAYNE…..makes a valid point with a topical issue…. Never mind the morons like ac who never get the point…

  29. Want standards to rise?Give room to open another tv station.Thats the real problem.

  30. The Bushman………i bet if those two ladies where shapely bikini vixens with only sheer thong bikinis each night on CBC TV, neither you nor the writer would have any problems at all, at all, as a matter of fact if one night you did not see them, you would be the most vocal voice admonishing the presenters for not showing you the flesh…..and don’t forget these ladies live in a tropical country and why can’t they set that standard? they are not indecently dressed, all the strategic points are covered, so you don’t like the colors, too bad, so sad.

“…next thing yuh know ac pun the people TV with all she poxy legs exposed…. 🙂 …just because she is a bid D….”

Gotta agree with you on that one…lol.

“Wunna ever heard about DISCIPLINE? …about CORPORATE STANDARDS? …about aiming to be world class?”

remember what aiming to be world class got Owen Arther

  31. ha..ha.and this antiquated brass bowl. bush tea….wants to perfect a system ..with BuP..i think this ole goat must have butt his head too many times..fuh bush tea reality is what he perceives that which is only beknownst to him..i wunnda which planet he came from.cause this fool is as abnormal as sh..t

Mr. Franklyn is only catching at straws because of one of my previous articles regarding the unions in Barbados, Where I touch one of his nerves when I stated that the unions they have outlived their usefulness and that they are fighting for survival because they depend on dues from workers to keep them alive.
Mr. Franklyn should not have any difficulty with any body writing an article on social issues, because he writes an article weekly in one of the local tabloids on all sorts of topics, because he has an axe to grind. Well, I certainly do not have an axe to grind and I can therefore write on any topic that I see fit to comment on.

  33. @Wayne Cadogan – Social Writer, Designer, Retired Civil Servant and former National Athlete

Dear Wayne: With reference to your misogynistic rant. Has anybody ever told you that you cannot write?

I am not clutching at straws. I was merely observing that as a grown man, you have time to gossip about how women dress on TV. It sounds girly to me.

By the way, I did not remember or even realised that you were the author of the article about unions. Your problem is that you hold yourself to high in my estimation.

  36. Thing about it is, there are no complaints from the ‘millions’ who view cbc tv outside of Barbados, only from two so far in Barbados, get this……..who don’t like gaudy colors…lol

  38. I Know Wayne Cadogan would have been to CBC studio already and had an interview. The studio is air conditioned but the lighting makes it hot. The make up artist applies makeup powder to keep the presenters from sweating in front of the cameras. You can imagine dressing up in suits and heavy dresses reading the news at night for that hour, really ten minutes. The people are hot already Wayne. Get a life Wayne and stick to criticizing the Senior Games.

  39. Fashion Taliban.

The same sort of mind set which causes people to beat women and girls who do not adhere to a male dress code.

The same sort of people who put down their daughters in law, because the daughters in law wear sleeveless dresses.

The same foolish unconstitutional rule which causes the courts in Barbados to mount stupid unconstitutional rules telling tax paying Bajans that they can’t come in to the clerk’s office of the court to apply for a birth certificate while wearing a sleeveless dress David Commissiong!!!!! where are you when we need you to challenge unconstitutional foolishness). Or if a man while wearing a shirt which is not tucked into his pants. Except that Muslim men are exempt for this tucked into the pants foolishness. Which just goes to show how foolish and unconstitutional the rule is.

The same foolishness which has caused Inland Revenue to post a rule saying that taxpayers (YES, THOSE OF US WHO PROVIDE THE GOVERNMENT WITH ALL OG ITS FUNDS) that we cannot come to the cashier’s desk to pay oUr taxes or ask a question while wearing a sleeveless dress.

The same fashion Taliban who give Rihanna a hard time for wearing a bikini at the beach (LOL!!!!) and (LOL!!!!)

The same fools who give Michelle Obama for boarding Air Force 1 while wearing knee length shorts while on her way to vacation in Hawaii with her children. What is she supposed to wear to Hawaii a fur coat?

That’s beside the point. Besides… Bushie don’t want to see Islandgal wid she two saggy bubbles pon the TV either…

THE POINT IS …that if we are going to do something, we need to do it PROFESSIONALLY. We need to have standards – SOME STANDARDS – and we need to IMPRESS customers (viewers) that we are serious professionals…..

….not every damn joker doing as they like because “dat is we culture” ….

    @ Wayne Cadogan
Wait Boss man…..a whole set of brass bowls come here criticizing your article – and you chose to pick on Bushie’s main man – Caswell to hit back…?

LOL…you ain’t see that Caswell does slap on his grandfathers suit whenever he writing in the Nation? LOL …Wuh he just as bad as the woman with the king size sheet pun she head… LOL Ha Ha

  41. @Wayne Cadogan “Where I touch one of his nerves when I stated that the unions they have outlived their usefulness and that they are fighting for survival because they depend on dues from workers to keep them alive.”

Ya talking nonsense. Of course unions have to depend on member’s dues to survive. that does not make them irrelevant.

Government have to depend on taxpayers monies to survive. That does not make government irrelevant.

Fashion designers have to depend on their customers to survive. That does not make fashion designers irrelevant.

Children have to depend of their parents to survive. That does not make childhood irrelevant.

Churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, mission halls have to depend on their congregations in order to survive. That does not make churches etc. irrelevant.

Wayne ya in ova ya head. Get out before ya drown.

“Really? All the serious issues going on in Barbados and the world and THIS is a topic of national interest? Lord help us all……..”

    Agreed…….

Why not talk about CBC TV8…… showing the same old “Sing Out Barbados” and Mighty Gabby fillers every Saturday mornings; rotating the same 8 movies on Sunday afternoons and Sunday nights; calling Maureen Holder a political analyst; showing the boring “Mid-morning Mix” twice a day; showing “Days of Our Lives” five days a week, then an entire Saturday afternoon; showing the same Christmas fillers since 1978; most importantly, CBC’s management’s insensitivity and lack of respect for viewers, because despite all complaints, they continue to show nuff, nuff, shiite!!!!!

  43. @ Simple Minded Simon
Cadogan is correct about unions….their current focus is simple minded and doomed…

Unions do NOT have to depend on their members to survive. With creative leadership, unions can become PRODUCTIVE and CAN in fact be a source of wealth for their members…(like if the BWU could have succeeded with UCAL….)

Government DO NOT all have to depend on taxpayers to survive….
Some government actualy pay royalties to taxpayers rather than charge taxes.

Fashion designers can make FORTUNES through creative patents, through copyrights, through movies etc

YOU may be the one out of your depth ……stop picking on persons seeking to make a meaningful contribution do….

Mr. Franklyn, the ship is sinking. No workers means no dues. No dues means no union. What you should do is to start a business and create some form of employment for a few workers and maybe, your union might get some dues in order to sustain it. You are not only clutching at straws, but for your daily survival.

  47. All of these complaints and yet we all watch CBC nightly news!! Is the purpose of the news to entertain? Is its purpose to highlight the latest in fashion? What is more important what is read or who reads it?

Could it be that Island Girl and many others here including Miller have a secret wish to READ THE EVENING NEWS!!

  48. @Silly Bushie “Fashion designers can make FORTUNES through creative patents, through copyrights, through movies etc.”

And these fortunes come from where?

Customers who buy the garments to wear to festivities.

Customers who buy the customers for use in their movies.

Movie customers who pay to go to the movies.

All great fortunes have their genesis in the pockets of customers.

How did Saudi Arabia become rich? The oil was there for billions of years, but Saudi Arabia only became rich when customers bought the oil.Oil in the ground is worth NOTHING. Gasoline in a customer’s car is worth $200 BDS per fill up.

Did you think that Steve Jobs became rich only because he had good ideas. No he became rich because the customers loved his stuff and were willing to pay him good money for more and more, and more.

    Customers Silly Bushie.
