Wayne Cadogan – Social Writer, Designer, Retired Civil Servant and former National Athlete

It is time the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation draws the line regarding the dress code of its female’s news presenters. It is neither pleasing to the eyes or for the image of CBC. A single night does not go by without receiving a call regarding some of the outlandish attire that is worn by some of the female news presenters for my opinion or comment. I must be honest with you and let you know that when certain presenters are on, that I would always turn my television set off because of their attire. I have been meaning for quite some time to comment on the matter, although a few weeks ago I was prompted to write a short article after realizing that my entire television screen was being consumed by one of its main presenters and the gaudy African garment that she was wearing then and which is always the case in terms of her wardrobe which appears to be only African garments.

Recently, I received a call asking if I was watching the news and what are my thoughts of the presenter’s apparel, before I could state my opinion, the person proceeded to tell me that the presenter look like an over loaded Christmas tree and it was not pleasing to the eyes. Well, I certainly had to agree with the caller, because the bright pink and black trimmed outfit plus the necklace did not do the presenter any justice. Two nights later the same person called me back regarding the dress that the female weather presenter was wearing, to tell you the truth; it was very difficult to discern the dress from the clouds and the currents and which is the norm for this particular presenter in terms of her choice of outfits because of her body structure.

When one looks at the International news, both the female and male news presenters compliment each other in their attire; but that is not the case at the CBC TV8. It is very pleasing to see that all the male presenters at CBC are always nattily attired while the females with the exception for one or two are poorly dressed, which does not compliment the men’s attire. There are guidelines for how one should dress when they are on camera, why are these guidelines not been adhered to?  Who is responsible to enforce and see that these guidelines are carried out? One would notice that the International female news presenters always wear a solid colour dress or a suit while the males always wear a suit. It would be in the best interest for CBC to address this matter regarding the female dress code, since CBC news is beamed all over the world and being viewed by millions of viewers and that the image being presented should be one that promotes Barbados in a positive light.

Barbados is currently rated very high in the world in terms of obesity and anyone seeing the majority of our female presenters would be inclined not to come to Barbados as a destination where fitness and health lifestyles are paramount. One can say that the male news presenters at CBC understand the importance of image or that they follow very closely the international trends of dressing as a news presenter. I guess one has to lay the blame squarely at the feet of management for this lack of professionalism among the female news presenters in terms of how they dress. It is evident that some of these ladies do not understand the Do’s and Don’ts of fashion or how to dress for the occasion, presenters attire should be more business like and not as if they are dressing for a party or a lime; which is the case for most of the ladies at CBC.

The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation is a government entity and is the eyes and mouth of the government run by a board which mandates the policies of the corporation. Although the government service does not dictate that any of its departments wear a uniform; like some private companies who make it mandatory that their employees wear a uniform, which serves to identify the company from other businesses. When one wears a uniform, it shows a sense of pride, commitment, part of and belonging to an organization. It is time that the government of Barbados implements some form of dress code for its white collar departments and not only for the blue collar worker. Barbadians are a follow pattern society which seems to pick up all the negatives and not the positives from the so called outside world. There are a lot of positive ideas out there in the world that we as Barbadians can adopt in order to be a front runner with the rest of the world. If we are going to continue to push tourism as the driving engine to promote our beautiful paradise, let us start with the image of the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation which promotes this island to millions of viewers worldwide daily.

  2. LOL @ Simple Simon….
…You playing you smart with Bushie nuh…..

You said “Fashion designers have to depend on their customers to survive.” …..on THEIR customers…. LOL
…now you retreating to the Movie theatre’s customers, and OTHER PEOPLE’s customers….????
It is NOT a simple case of money collected from one’s customers as you alluded, but of advanced creative opportunities for success as Wayne hinted unions could (should) be engaging in….

…as for Caswell, Bushie hopes that Unity goes broke soon …so that he will done with the union shiite …and start the damn BUP….

  3. @ CASWELL
“By the way, I did not remember or even realized that you were the author of the article about unions. Your problem is that you hold yourself to high in my estimation.”
i think you are speaking about yourself here, you see yourself as an authority on LAW, POLITICAL SCIENCE,TRADE UNIONISM, ECONOMISTS.MILITARY and you know what i never heard you made any meaningful contribution ON ANYTHING. nobody can say CASWELL FRANKLYN was responsible for anything that was positive . not even a family man where you FAILED miserably, after trying on two (2) occasions . you claim to have a union with ten(10) members from the airport, you are looking for support , the article you are paid to write is not sufficient income for your survival . if Barbados burn down you cant help it , it was standing firm for fourteen(14) years and you made no contribution. after sir, David no other politician wanted to see you including mia mottley who gave you an office in the post office with noting to do for two years, that is why you hate her, she knew you are destruction . Clarke gave you a job at NUPW and you couldn’t keep it , you undermine him . you expect every contribution on this blog to be about politics.. you have seen better days , you add no value to anything, you speak like an authority on everything . let people make a contribution in peace, you want to dictate what people should write now? YOU THINK TO HIGHLY OF YOURSELF.

  5. @ as for you Islandgal……
If you going talk out we bedroom business…yuh could at least be honest and tell dum the true size of the cucumber …and why you initially had was to run looking for the 2X4 for protection….
    ….tonight again luv? 🙂

  6. Psftt, more black on black dribble. I guess after all these years we still have to follow and conform to the white man’s idea of professional standards. They are some black women in the States who cant wear work their own god dam natural hair because its not ‘professional’. I bet it was females that was calling the author to complain. As a man I will say this, Black women are their own worst enemy.

  7. When Austin Tom Clake was general manager of CBC did he rollout standards? For those who need a reminder Sir Don wrote a calypso on it.

To clear the air, BU is not about insisting the highest grammar is presented by bloggers, all are encouraged to expressed themselves based on levels of education or command of the language. Those who bring this to the fore we say you qualify for the BU JA Club.

Does anyone know the hits which the CBC website gets?

  9. Why must Barbados always follow the ‘world’ in everything? I admire the nations that embrace their national wear .We can wear the USA flag clothing but it’s not legal to wear our own colors out side of independence

  10. Caswell Franklyn | June 9, 2014 at 12:37 PM |

    My dear Wayne

I am not clutching at straws. I was merely observing that as a grown man, you have time to gossip about how women dress on TV. It sounds girly to me.

I thought as soon as Caswell started to hint that men who gossip about women’s dresses on TV sound girly and gayish, the Bushman would run for the hills, but oh no, he’s standing up rather well, anything you would like to share with us Bushman?…..lol

These females in all honesty look rather professional, the colors may be bright and designs not European traditional but they are wearing what makes them comfortable and it’s rather unique and refreshing….Bushman you are so used to the European traditional you do not recognize unique and different.

  11. Besides, some of the clothing Selma wears, I see regularly at Dressbarn on Avenue of the America, especially the leopard prints, some i buy and wear, some of the designs are Native American….the African garb Rosemary wears is very good quality cotton that keeps a gal’s skin real cool…….you men should try wearing tight skirt suits with chemical hair and high heels in the tropics and see how you like them apples.

  12. Bush Tea asked at 7:30 “Who wears a king sized bed sheet on their damn head”

    Ellen Sirleaf Johnson?

And said “king sized bed sheet on her damn head hasn’t prevented her from being Finance Minister, President and Nobel Prize Winner.

Isn’t it time we stopped being so backward and that we hire and promote women for what is in their heads rather than what is on “their damn heads”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Johnson_Sirleaf
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (born 29 October 1938) is the 24th and current President of Liberia. She served as Minister of Finance under President William Tolbert from 1979 until the 1980 coup d’état, after which she left Liberia and held senior positions at various financial institutions. She placed second in the 1997 presidential election won by Charles Taylor. She won the 2005 presidential election and took office on 16 January 2006, and she was a successful candidate for re-election in 2011. Sirleaf is the first elected female head of state in Africa.

Sirleaf was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, jointly with Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Tawakel Karman of Yemen. The women were recognized “for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.”[1]

Sirleaf was conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize by President of India Pranab Mukherjee on 12 September 2013

  13. Thank God Barbados ain’t one of those places where semi-literate old men get to tell everybody else what to do, and what to wear, and what to think.

  14. as a person of african descendant i find it highly offensive that mr.cadogan one who calls himself a designer would be so unappreciative of the african attire a symbol of culture heritage and pride..,,that attire was deliberately designed to be separate of Caucasian style… with an intent to separate blacks from european style and culture and bringing blacks a little closer to the motherland,, and a style which is truly representative of blacks of all sizes… .it is really unfortunate that mr cadog.an cannot see the symbolism .that is attached when people of color adorn themselves in african attire but rather go on a verbal rampage to besmirch and trivialize the attire and character of those who chooses to adorn themselves in a beautiful way while wearing it as a symbol of pride and dignity,,,Mr cadogan there are still some blacks who understands and respect their heritage,,unfortunately u seems not to be one of them….SAD,,,

  15. And thank God Barbados has not yet reach a place where the wisdom of its old people is summarily ignored.

  16. It would be useful if some with limited comprehension skills reread the submission slowly. Where has Wayne Cadogan trivialized African garb?

ya mean like calling bullers bullers and wickers wickers?
HOW CAN I FORGET MY CULTURE

  19. i doubt very much if Mr cadogan had seen an Indian woman wearing the clothes representative of her culture on CBC…. he or any of his snobbish boring friends would have been critical ,,, however it seems that there are some so called intellectual blacks once they have reached a certain level which is acceptable by the white society as an acceptable norm, waste no time on spitting on their heritage and culture ..in their haste to erase and separate themselves from an historical past,,,,,,,,Revolting………

  20. @ac “intellectual blacks”

    LOLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!

    Semi-literate has-been more like it.

  21. @Georgie Porgie “ya mean like calling bullers bullers and wickers wickers?”

You realize that you wastin’ your time?

Ya born and find bullers and wiccas (male and female homosexuals) and you will die and leave them.

  22. And wiccas means wise women=the women who too wise to have anything to do with the likes of Georgie Porgie.

  23. Since most of the HIV in the world is spread by penises.

  24. i believe u david have selective comprehension..always trying to justify dribble when it comes from the so called upper echelons of Barbadian society,, those who believe that everything the say should be of importance ,, the damn man refer to the clothing being worn as a christmas tree ,,decoration,,fuh god sake DAvid more and more everyday your are lacking integrity, sometimes u need to wear a muzzle ,,rather than be a side kick and artful dodge rfor entertainers of stupidity …the man did not mix his words,, his words were highly offensive comparing the attire to a christmas tree, , yuh tink he would say sh,,t like that in any american article,,,,, the man is a lowcast intellectual snob……who takes him self so seriously that he figured that he could write any shitty article and enuff clowns like bushtea would agree with it..ass,hole,,,

  26. No point in arguing with idiots….they don’t even know when they have lost the argument….

Calling for standards has not one shiite to do with African dress, Indian dress or European dress. It is simply about having set professional CBC standards…
If wunna simple minded women can only copy somebody else…be it African sheets or European suits….well so be it…

So when Someone ‘who once visited Africa’ is reading she wears a sheet, …when the Girl from England is reading she wears European….when some Indian girl is reading – she wears Indian, and when ac is reading she wears a harness….? That is wunna plan?

What Cadigan seem to be suggesting is that whoever is reading CBC’s news looks like a CBC news presenter….be it a shirt jac, shirt and tie, polo shirt …..or king size sheet.
THAT sounds like basic COMMON sense to Bushie…and good business sense too… Why the hell wunna don’t turn up at Republic Bank, FCIB, Royal bank, Cheffette or any other workplace wid wunna king size sheets tomorrow….?
    Steupsss…
Bushie must only be a shiite anyhow…to continue to expect brass bowls to get it….

  27. Bushman said:
” Why the hell wunna don’t turn up at Republic Bank, FCIB, Royal bank, Cheffette or any other workplace wid wunna king size sheets tomorrow….?”

Bushman……i believe until CBC gets a uniform for their females, you are stuck watching and complaining about what the current news presenters wear………all the places you mentioned have uniforms, i don’t know if CBC has a uniform and the news presenters are ignoring the attire and wearing what they feel comfortable in, despite what people think or how they feel, i believe it’s the call of CBC’s management to institute a dress code, not the public.

  28. Well Well
    “…..i believe it’s the call of CBC’s management to institute a dress code… ”
    ++++++++++
…Is that not what the article essentially suggests…?

  29. Yeah Bushman…………so if CBC ignores the call, what will Cadogan do, i know you will just steupss, but can he handle it….seeing he is so passionate about female wear.

  30. We all have opinions about different things, we truly have to learn to respect other views and if we have to challenge opposing views do so by using sound reasoning skills.

  31. LOL @ Well Well
…of course CBC will ignore the call…thank God…..Cause Bushie’s second best laugh of the week comes with the appearance of the sheet when the Sunday comes….
The only thing more hilarious would be seeing ac in the harness …reading the news without any damn punctuation…. LOL Ha Ha

  32. as fuh yuh u bushtea u too are among the crowd of intellectual kiss me a..ss poor great snobs,,i don;t need u to interpret the article fuh me,,,,the man said what he said, did not mix any words in attacking the lady who wore the african attire,,and never missed a beat in definition….. couldn’t careless about what he thinks or believes to be his definition of standard style,,,,,all that i see is his offensive and outlandish definitions in reference to the garment and the person wearing,,u can try to twist and turn the article any which way u please to defend,,,,,but ,,calling the african attire gaudy is a form of snobbery,,and goes beyond fair criticism and was in very poor taste,,,, it would not have been so bad if he had used a generalized approach in his etiquette… but pointing out an individual and the clothing that was worn is poor taste and over the top bad judgement and lacks class,,, if this so called fashion crtique was educated in african attire and its fashion he would have been less attacking and would have produce an article which would have provided the reader with a better perspective with less criticism and a more palatable approach to that type of attire specifying how and when it can be worn and for what occasions,,and its presentation as a professional style,,,,, personally i do not see anything wrong with what the lady is wearing maybe a few minor changes not so significant that the attire warranted such a negative response,,however i believe that an oversized head and a big ego must have gotten the best of cadogan when he penned this article,,,,maybe it is time for him to have a major overhaul in the ego department..maybe down to a size 0,, ,,

  33. @Bush Tea

You sure know how to get them frothing at the mouths.

  34. it is so obvious that some here would give this designer a pass in the area where of nastiness whereby he does not only critiques the female staff but openly picks on one individual calling by name as having bad professional style ; mr, cadogan needs to know his place before he can criticize others for their faults… as it is obvious that he is lacking in taste.. may not be fashion ,,however very much lacking in poor taste,,not only did he not have a bone to pick with CBC and the attire of the female reporters but also he never missed the opportunity to wade through the dirty water of slime hitting below the belt pointing out one individual by name as an example of bad attire,,that is WRONG >>WRONG >>WRONG> and he should be told,

  35. @David

    You have me here ROFLMAO.

  36. How so Hoodie?

ac you can, read, where did did the man mention a female name? my eye sight ain’t too good, but I do not see no names in the article.

    +++++++++++++++
Easy with ac…..you just need to know how to pull back sharply on the bridle…..

  39. @ Wayne Cadogan
    No name no lockup…
..but in this case Bushie feels that the cap (or sheet) fits….. 🙂
Ha Ha Ha LOL oh Shirt!!!!

  40. @ David

At your comment to BT about him making them froth at the mouth. Reminds me of when GP gets them doing the same thing. 🙂

BTW, I mentioned in another thread that you had to share some blame for the DEMS being in power now. I did not realise that you had already acknowledged that you had indeed bought into their election spin from the platforms. No offense was meant so hope none was taken. 🙂

  41. @Hoodie

It is no secret the BU household bought into Thompson’s message last election.

  42. @ David

Yeah lots of us were hood-winked. 🙂

  43. yeah good shot i figured that name calling would bring yuh dead a,ss out but everybody knows of whom yuh speak,,it is obvious that the attire mentioned only can be attached to that one female person by description whether by printing the name or by sublimal intent,,,,it is all the same,,,,,,,your ass need to be called upon for an apology fool,,,..further more the person to whom the attire is attached can legally demand one from your backside ,,,,who the hell is you to get up in here and publicly embarrassed an individual by name or acquaintance as to what they should wear,, fool.

  44. @ac “an oversized head and a big ego”

Unfortunately there are a lotta, lotta dem around.

You think waynie is one ‘o dem?

  45. LOl
Somebody needs to get some help for ac yuh!!
Since GP assaulted her with the bulling and wicking sermon …she seems to have lost any remaining touch she may have had with reality.
Now she wants someone to apologize for nor liking a TV personality’s attire….?
Should we also apologize for not liking your DLP’s failure to keep election promises? ….or for expressing our disgust at the shiite our PM seems to relish spouting…?
    Steupsss

  46. so whats the point.,. is that from an african perspective or a white establishment perspective, sometimes… no/// not sometimes all the time u guys tek people for fools,,,,,

mr. cadogan..let me reminded uu that even though u might not have called the individual by name the information provided via your article gives the reader enough insight as to whom you were speaking,,,,,,,.words like gawdy and describing the persons attire as a christmas tree on the world wide web in a country as small as barbados where every one knows everyone is disgusting….,,

  47. well bush your moral standards or lack therefore is smaller than your dic,,,,,,and yes when one feels that they have been ridicule they can seek recourse by way of apology however i would not expect you to understand that as a person who likes to promote physical and verbal abuse on people including children…that would be far remove from your comprehension….in this case mr .cadogan had no qualms about insulting the news reporter in his use descriptive tone and manner of language irrespective of what that person might feel,,, even though much of what he said was unprofessional and tasteless…..

  48. ac

Insulting people in a small community…..but ac BU does it all the time…what on earth are you complaining about?

  49. I have known Wayne for a very long time and have long respected his views regarding fashion. Having said that, I am disappointed with his post: if not tasteless, it is certainly tactless. Although the individual presenter(s) were not mentioned by name the very description of their attire leaves no doubt as to who they are. Had this article been written about me, I would have found it demoralizing. Actually, on my frequent visits home I find it refreshing to see that they (female presenters) are now thinking “outside the box” in their choice of attire. I yearned to be back home making similar choices instead of the forced corporate suit, panty hose restrictions corporate America has forced down my throat these past 25 years! IMO, a better approach would have been for Wayne, in his capacity of Design/Fashion Critique, aka Fashion Police, to approach CBC management and offer his professional services and or recommendations to tweak the offending garb. There is no place in our society, small as it is, for tearing down others. If our men (black) can’t appreciate our uniqueness, is there any wonder we are disparaged by others? (This from a 60-year-old size 10 Bajan-Yankee who is always told, wherever in the world I am, that I look like I have stepped off the pages of Vogue! Oh, yeah, and I wear African bed sheets, too!!!)
