Pornography is now easily available to all school children who have access to a tablet or a smart phone. It is facilitated by persons who allow unrestricted access to the Internet in their homes or at the many Wi-Fi hotspots around Barbados. So let me share a solution; but first, let me describe the problem.

Pornography has two main damaging effects. The impact for viewers is that that they can primarily view sexual intercourse as a means to satisfy themselves rather than satisfying their partners. For male viewers, this can lead to a less satisfying sexual experience for her and a boring routine for him. He will likely develop an uncaring attitude towards her if she does not express a similar delight in his sexual performance as those whom he watches. His sexual experience should be all about satisfying her, and her sexual experience should be all about satisfying him.

The most damaging impact is on the victims whom the watchers are viewing. Many women, especially from Asian and eastern European countries, are forced into the sex slave trade, with harsh consequences if they do not show delight when raped (See Half the Sky and other research into sex slavery). As the watchers view these victims, they are supporting and sustaining this slavery. If people choose not to pay to view pornography on the Internet, then they still support and sustain the sex slave trade by adding to the web sites’ page views, which increases their potential advertising revenues.

For men to intentionally choose to harm themselves and their marriages for a few moments of pleasure is irresponsible. However, for viewers to sustain the sex slave trade, and the hopelessness of the victims who are repeatedly raped into submission, is unconscionable. The persons who forced the victims into sex slavery are vile. However, how do we describe the viewers who keep them in slavery by sustaining the slave owners’ profits? For us descendants of slaves, who should be held to a higher standard in this matter, to now sustain the enslavement of these women, is beyond my comprehension. So what is an economical and effective solution?

The obvious solution would be for the local Internet service providers to block pornographic images. However, this may attract claims of censorship from persons who feel entitled to access pornography regardless of the consequential damage to viewers and their victims. Yes, the sex slave actually becomes the victim of their Internet viewer. Therefore, the responsibility of helping the victims must fall heavily on all Internet subscribers.

Every household, school, resource centre and business with an Internet account should protect our children, and refuse to support the sex slave trade, by installing an effective pornography blocker at their router. I recommend the free Open DNS Family Shield software, which can be installed at the router in less than 2 minutes. This should have the added benefit of significantly improving productivity in the work place.

The first thing that should be done in Barbados to combat pornography should be to ensure that none of the candidates in a general election is a pornographer. That would go a long way to show that Barbados is serious about the fight to protect women from sex slavery.

  2. so how does the public go about that task………and how does one define a ‘pornoghpher’ ammm i know the answr,,,but for some it cast a wider net,,,,,,,,and who are u going to put in charge ,,,,,and which society are u going to find one person who did not or have acess to pornoghy in his or her lifetime,,,,,what rules and guidelines would there to filter out these that had access , and would not that be going against what u called for,,

  3. One of the problems is that the children are more savvy than the parents when knowing how to use the technology. Finding a backdoor to counter the blocker will will likely not be to much of a challenge.

You know very well that I was not referring to the consumers of smut: I was referring to the merchants of smut. They should not be selected as candidates.

  5. To protect young children in Barbados from viewing pronography on the internet and the smart phones, we should simply do as the American has done and install filters. And by placing these filters on the internet for example: it prevents innocent children from accessing to such features on the internet as Facebook, utube etc. Libraries throughout America that are receiving federal grants are required to install this piece technology. So one of the first thing the government of Barbados should do if it is serious about protecting innocent from the exposture to pronography, would be to install this piece of technology at all public libraries throughout the island for a start.

  6. Good post but in reality it’s pie in the sky.

Many adults like porn, they want it available. As long as it is available, there is an avenue for children to get to it. It’s the blessing and curse of the internet and the information age.

The first and main “filter” should be the filter of values, morals. principles, discernment and right choice. This would overcome virtually any vice and there would be no need for soft or hard ware firewalls.

But then again that would be in a utopian state that cared about such and wanted and was willing to act to protect its youth. I’m not convinced that Barbados is.

    Just observing.

  7. it is hard to validate the content of this article when it that does not include or is not sufficiently focused or grounded in medical or psychological information on the effects of pornography and its addiction on the human mind,,. this information attempts to solve is by use of ‘the fear factor,,,when any intelligent person would know that pornography like any other abuse be it drugs needs clinical help in seeking remedy,,yes their are laws on the books that try to stem pornography and its impact on society however the real solution must be found where it is rooted and the need for the abuser to seek medical help to be addressed….. as for children,,,,more likely than not there need to view and engage is mostly out of curiosity,,,however ,,kids with good parenting would teach and advise their children of the pitfalls a tool that is more effective than laws and locks …..and to those children with parents who are not actively involved in their children’s overall well being ,,,well they would have to suffer the consequences of laws that are not meant to protect and remedy the problem…but to punish,..

  8. @”This should have the added benefit of significantly improving productivity in the work place.”

My employer tells us in writing if we view pornography on their equipment they will fire us.

    And then they do.

    It is great for productivity.

This is a brilliantly written piece, but the pornographic industry has been given free reign, because of the complete break down in social/family values. It never ceases to amaze me, when the pornography situation raises its head, and half naked bajans gyrate to the CROP OVER FESTIVAL’S ACTIVITIES. Less has become best, not only in Barbados, but throughout the world. Barbadians have continuously over the decades stripped down, and joined the parades of the naked, yet with the decline in our social fabric, we ask the question, why pornography? We in the caribbean, offer our chief export, which is the burgeoning industry of sex, loose morals and perversity. I would offer a challenge to anyone here, to go look at the large numbers of half naked women of bajan desent, on facebook and other places on the internet. To understand why Barbadian children are predisposed to pornography, and sexual depravity, all that’s required is to look at some of their role models. Half naked, “Butt to the camera women” seem to dot Barbados’ landscape, as much as the beaches dot our island home. The issue of abject social decay, starts with the moral mendicancy that pervades our homes, culture and in essence, our beings, I would contend, that we bajans went from “Pride In Industry” to like most other caribbeans islands, selling ourselves short, in the new minstrel outings of twenty first century capitalism. Progress can never be engineered on the backs of loose morals, and trifling moral subterfuge. Having a good time and enjoying our national past times, should not involve those things, for which our ancestors fought hard, to remove from the social consciouness of our people. If equality sells our family structure short, and progress limit’s us to the pantheons of social degeneracy, then how far have we really progressed?

  10. The stats are available, the most visited sites by Barbadians and the world are xrated websites.

  11. “Pornography” is often painted with a broad brush, there are not too many victims of the ‘sex slave trade” who are in pornographic films, they are mainly found in brothels and illicit sex has nothing to do with pornography.

  12. Oh dear…there’s nothing worse than posturing fake morality in the name of “values” and “social degeneracy”. Porn is not what you watch. It’s how you routinely behave.

Yes children must be safeguarded. Yes women must be protected. But who has given any of you the right to tell me or any other adult what I shall watch and why?

Sure the commercialization of sex diminishes it but it doesn’t mean I can’t fall in love with, or lust for, a lap dancer. or a tart or a porn star. Sure partners must seek to “satisfy” each other. The problem is that for so many ‘satisfying” means unimaginative routine without mutual sharing and that has nothing to do with porn. Radicalism stops with fellatio which the poor male of the species at the height of his creative power sees as the beginning which ends with three quick thrusts.. Knob heads all.

As usual, at root sex is advertised as the ‘GREAT SIN’. You can’t enjoy it for its own sake. You can only make babies with it in the missionary position, half clothed, in the dark, on Saturday night. At least that’s what we pretend to the world. And for good measure the body, his or hers, is seen as dirty, something to be covered at all costs – at least till you have it off with the secretary, or the baby sitter, or the ‘F… buddy’, or the outside woman. Oh yes, and masturbation causes warts or makes your hand drop off. It’s DIRTY and besides – God forbids it. HELP.

Anticipating the fake wrath of the prude, the Pentecostal and the Pharisee I will leave the ‘virtue’ of porn for tomorrow. Meanwhile – try not telling lies for a day, and on your way to work, Macho Man, DON’T stop the car on a busy road to let some bimbo cross other than at a zebra crossing. It doesn’t make you Rambo and the girl will just think you’re a wimp. Besides, it may just keep the next man alive a iittle longer. Oh yes, and when you answer your significant other on the cell phone – try not to begin by saying ‘YEAH?’ Remember – you love her, really love her – don’t you?

  13. @David
It is fashionable to lump all these issues together, “pornography”’ alone doesn’t generate the feedback and outrage that people expect, however if you include “human trafficking” then the condemnation meter rises.

@robert ross Oh dear…there’s nothing worse than posturing fake morality in the name of “values” and “social degeneracy”. Porn is not what you watch. It’s how you routinely behave. Dear friend, freedom isn’t free. Yes you have the choice to watch what you will or may watch, but the very fact that you have entered into this conversation, is emblematic of the fact that you too agree with the ills of pornography facing Barbados’ youth. “The road to hell, is paved with good intentions,” and certainly, adults have the rights to act out their sexual fantasies in the privacy of their bedrooms, I am not disagreeing with you, and certainly, I will not profess to tell you or any adult what should be right for you. Nonetheless, where do we stand relative to the social decay, brought on by our diminishing of women and children as sex objects. If you believe that perverse sexual misgivings are okay for the public domain, then the tenor of this conversation needs to be seriously looked at.The prevailing wind of sexual bastardization of the shores of the caribbean, by North Americans, Canadians, Australians and Europeans, allow them to covort with the inhabitants of numerous West Indian Islands, only contributes to the socials ills facing our Island nations. An example of this, would be the sexual Jamaican Island spot known as “Hedonism” where these nude mostly white sexual predators, offer up the kind of perversity to Jamaica, that they would dare not offer in their respective countries. Our main export to the world cannot be sex, if it is, then all that Barbados or Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago or any other caribbean nation was meant to give to its citizenry, would have been in vain. Our Africaness, ancestrally afforded us a conservative, yet monotheistic belief and family structure that protected women and children. Ours as a people, though showing certain hetorosexual proclivities, never allowed for deviant sexual behaviors. Sexual deviance was given to Africans, and ultimately to us, by the European colonizers. Hence, our people are traditioned in our ancestral rythms, and our cultural folklore, which is non inclusive of pornographic depictions of our women and our children. I contend that upon our freedom to act out our sexual fantasies as adults, brings the responsibilities of familial safeguard from the ruinous perversity of pornographic displays of our women and children, and that we must protect the sanctity of our children’s minds.

  16. If we claim that we are looking for real and constructive solutions to address the contemporary challenges that are confronting the young people in Barbados today, then why are engaging in this back and forth conversation to obviously inflate our sense of importance?

  17. “The first thing that should be done in Barbados to combat pornography should be to ensure that none of the candidates in a general election is a pornographer. That would go a long way to show that Barbados is serious about the fight to protect women from sex slavery”
Comrade Franklyn, this is a very serious comment which I observe unlike your other frankly speaking revealing posts other commentators have chosen to ignore. I wonder why.

  18. “Nonetheless, where do we stand relative to the social decay, brought on by our diminishing of women ”
I am only speaking for about here although I heard a newscast the other morning with the Mayor of Port of Spain lamenting the lewd behaviour demonstrated by the almost nakedness displayed by the some of the women participating in the Carnival activities there and if you live here such a similar display of lewd behaviour by women who now brazenly display their nakedness particularly at crop over in some way or the other for all to see makes a mockery of your statement ‘ brought on by our diminishing of our women” My friend, women have been diminishing themselves for some time now. They do not need help.

  19. @Victor

The bottom line is there isn’t anything wrong with two consenting adults dramatising their sexual fantasies. The problem arises when you involve a malleable minded child who haven’t the necessary judgment to make a
decision that could possibly impact his/her life and damage his/ her character negatively for a long time.

  20. So how do we protect our children? To what extent do personal freedoms trump the public good? Are we to deny that the proliferation of sexual imagery on the Internet which our children with all the gadgetry have access should be ignored? It seems we have become so educated as to lay down our lives to defend at ALL costs personal preferences that Rome continues to burn. To those who don’t agree with Grenville offering of a solution what other avenues can we explore? Surely doing nothing is not an option.

  21. “Our Africaness, ancestrally afforded us a conservative, yet monotheistic belief and family structure that protected women and children. Mr Callender the road to hell is certainly paved with good intentions but the road to heaven is not gained by distorting information to suit ones intentions. Yes, the gist of your submission is intended to be noble and with good cause and I accept and respect your disgust with the declining values in society but to continue to lay the blame still at the foot of our white ancestors and totally abscond the role of our black ancestors is unacceptable. Tell me if it is the white man who imposed the culture of several wives to one black African man or the fact that in most African cultures, wives must be submissive to their husbands and daughters to their fathers in all respects.

  25. @ac

You have stated your OPINION several times, we get it. The discussion continues.

  26. Balance, I agree with one your points because when we continue to blame the white man for some of our shortcomings, it makes us appear as though we cannot think for ourselves.

  27. Caswell Franklyn fired the first volley in this discussion by suggesting an interesting idea. I do not know how that would help, as it hasn’t been proven that any of our political figures is indeed a pornographer, but I do get his suggestions’ direction and its meaning.
As an employee of a company whose business is rooted in technology and specifically the Internet, I believe that my experience enables me to speak somewhat authoritatively on this matter as I have seen the traffic generated by Barbadians on a daily basis, and have access to the top ten most visited categories of web sites.
I do find the Barbadian society to be way too “knee-jerk” in their reactions to problems, not to mention too hypocritical in their approach. Barbadians at large will pretend that they are so upright and moral, when in truth and fact, they are the upholders of this sort of behavior. We seemed to have gained a sense of piety and self-righteousness from our British ancestry, while succumbing to our innate and ravenous carnal desires for the opposite, and now by a steadily growing degree, the same sex.
Cellphones and their tablet cousins are out there and are in increasingly large numbers now. They are more portable, and more easily manipulated then laptops were, which has increased their share of the market for sales of Internet Access devices. They can also be more clandestinely deployed which makes them ideal for the many nefarious activities which children, and be extension adults can conjure up.
Children do not need the Internet to view, or access pornography, they share it among themselves after they create it for themselves. When the rest of us see or hear about it, it is because it has gone “viral” for one reason or another. Possibly fell into the wrong child’s hands, or some individual is “getting even” with another for what they consider an infraction against themselves.
Parents, happily handed children these devices without first establishing a structure or framework under which they would be monitored or managed. So, the net result was that idle hands and minds are now led to view and perform the acts that they have viewed from various sources. We now have a problem on our hands!
And our solution? Well, we now want LIME, Digicel, FLOW and whosoever will to install filters and other control mechanisms so that we can continue to be irresponsible. This is unbelievably selfish on our part!
Why so, one may ask? Should we not protect the children from the ills of our society? Many of you would agree that we should. Hands down!
However, bear this in mind. Any expense incurred by the Internet providers in this country, is going to be shared among all of us whether we are a party to its apparent benefit or not. And all because some irresponsible parents gave their children a tool, that they did not manage monitor or teach the same children the responsible use of that tool. Now, that its seen as a tool of lesser than stellar value, we would like to make the wrong people pay for its sins. We aren’t trying to take the tool away, or control its use mind you, we just want someone else to pay for our irresponsibility.
Well I don’t want to pay another cent more for Internet access without its value to me being justified. And this case certainly to my mind cant start to even form the foundations of that justification.
Here is my solution to this problem. Stop hiding, pretending and acting all hypocritical about sex and sexuality among humans. Stop trying to act like these things should not happen and should go away. Take action by installing your OWN filtering, monitoring and management in your OWN home and on your OWN devices and those of your children. Yes, become a spy in their lives. Have those phones and tablets report back to you where they go,(location wise), what they access, and what is stored on them.
I believe firmly that if parents took a more active and visible role in their children’s lives and activities, this problem will become less and less of a focal point, and we can go back to re-building the country knowing that there is a generation fit and ready to take the leadership when we strep down.
Going back to watching how this plays out.

  28. If they would stop making movies with Hollywood lesbians and use the girls living next door lesbians few people would be inclined to watch. There is a reason that normal people aren’t used in these movies, so if you really want people to get disinterested fast start flooding the market with your home made spandex clad chicks warts and all.

The horse has already bolted regarding sex, lovemaking, hedonism, pornography diminishment of values etc.

The blogger said and i quote “I recommend the free Open DNS Family Shield software, which can be installed at the router in less than 2 minutes.”

Quite simple really, much like companies in Amurica, Canada and Englant put blocks on their company phones to 800 sex line numbers the ingrunt Minister of Education can issue another edict, like no cell phones at schools for students, to have this open-source software installed like a NetNanny on the MoE routers.

Of course since the grans have 3G on their phones that does not stop them and other students whose parents pay for internet on the child’s phone from downloading any of the new porno stars and bb’ing it or whatsapping it to another student.

I certainly do not see DIGICEL or LIME putting a sex filter on the pay-as-you-go internet services of a 14 year old, they don’t really care as long as they make sales.

And from a technological point of view, how can one administer such a card that will determine the age of the user and bar a 12 year old from watching Debbie Does Dallas or Miss adolescent St Lucy Secondary doing a 3rd former or the Dance Teacher hired by the Ministry to teach the young girls at St Georges Secondary from doing the said students…while permitting a man/woman at the age of consent to watch waht the constitution affords them, bestiality, peodophilia and necrophilia?

    Excellent piece!
Just hope the hypocrites like the V(ery) ®ighteous Callender who like to speak on behalf of the moral majority take note.

Stop blaming the children, stop blaming pornography, stop blaming the European, stop blaming “society” and instead look within your home and family.

If the likes of VRC really understood the moral meaning behind the mythical story of the ‘forbidden fruit’ as told in the Jewish book of Genesis then they might just recognize the reason why mankind is a sexual deviant from nature’s will.
Sexual deviation is the social cost to be paid by humankind for making sex a ‘preferred’ source of entertainment and sensual pleasure and thereby subordinating its primary role of that of the perpetuation of the species.

Why do you think mankind invented gods and goddesses like Dionysius and Bacchus, Aphrodite and Venus and followed Socratic philosophers like Aristippus and daughter Arete?

Hedonism has always been around just like religion. There is nothing new under the Sun.

I beg to differ as to the reason that women have disappeared from the blog because of “intimidation….”

It maybe that, unlike you and I, many of these women have to work in jobs that consume alot of time and they cant be here like us shooting the breeze and pontificating on things ecclesiastical

It may be that the topics about Bulldog Estwick and the UAE or Butch Stewart, or Mr Loveridge’s Butcherization don’t titillate their intellect as it does yours or this retiree.

There are some women here who “rise to any occasion” and swap words and ideas with us Male Chauvanist Pigs at the drop of a pin and will cuss us for our indiscretions just like that too.

Unless you have instances where David [BU] denies the Freedom of Expression that this Blog is famous for, and so called Night of the Long Knives intimidation that both administrations are famous for, then I for one will say that what you are saying is not true.

From time to time you and I will have our encounters here but other that strenuously advancing a point to counter some strange (euphemism for *** thing that you might have said, I pensioner with foot on banana peel, threatened with kicks to the nogin by persons who will remain nameless (LOL) do not support your comment about intimidation but then again I is an ole man dennnnnn

  43. AC…………..don’t change the topic, you know honestly that David sometimes have the patient of a saint due to what you and others put him through on here, myself included. If females who have the time are no longer on here, it’s because they can’t take as good as they can give…..you yourself is an exercise in the indescribable and you give a whole lot more than you get and still come back, you are to be commended, so don’t blame the males although some of them need to be able to take more than they give.

  44. @ balance
It does seem so but programmed by who?
    +++++++++++
…surely you have noted the trend Mr. balance….the all-pervasive decline in what right thinking citizens like David and Victor call “good societal values”…..in EVERY area of our existence.

Wuh ….you think these are coincidences?
…that at a time in our history when we know more than everyone else who ever lived ALL COMBINED.
….when we have access to more technology that was ever even DREAMED of..
…. When we can routinely communicate with ANYONE , ANYWHERE. ANYTIME..

    That everything is in decline?…..EVERYTHING!!!

Open your eyes Boss, and you MUST see that SOME SHIITE IS SERIOUSLY WRONG….

The programmer is called Lucifer…..(has been for millennia now,) but these are desperate times for him, ’cause unlike our David, he knows that the end is near….
….his agents are out in full force leading wunna astray with foolish talk and shiite logic… LOL….they are some here on BU too 🙂 …..but Bushie is also here with his 4 stroke high capacity whacker to keep them in check….
