Rihanna receiving her AMA Icon Award from her mother.
Rihanna receiving her AMA Icon Award from her mother.

We have had a couple of interesting news items in recent days which served to piqued the curiosity of members of the BU household. Sir Hilary Beckles is of the view Barbados must capitalize on the success of Rihanna and her one billion dollar enterprise. To support his view he referred to Jamaica having built an industry around Bob Marley and reggae.ย  BU is unsure how Beckles is able to make the comparison to Marley riding the crest of an indigenous genre of music anchored in the DNA of a nation. Rihanna maybe Barbadian – with Guyanese lineage -but her success has been manufactured on the back of a US-international genre of music. How Barbados can bottle and leverage for success the way Jamaica did for Marley remains highly sceptical but BU is optimistic.

Then we heard from Canon Frank Marshall on the need for Barbadians to embrace values which represented the core of what drove our success of yesteryear. Many will query though whether these values have to be embodied in a religious dogma to qualify.ย  There is a strong view held by some Barbadians that when the Church played a leading role in our society the nation appeared to be in a better place morally, socially and economically.

Most if not all Barbadians have felt the urge to congratulate Rihanna winning the first AMA Icon Award.ย  BU offers our congratulations BUT acknowledges she is a R&B performer who uses the imagery of sex bordering on smut, suggestive lyrics and dance to peddle her stuff. This is a compromising of the very same values which Canon Marshall has attributed to our success as a nation.ย  Bear in mind Rihanna is our Youth and Cultural Ambassador although we believe this is an avenue used by government to provide access to a โ€˜redโ€™ passport.

Our view may not be widely supported but it is ours nevertheless. As a nation we cannot be critical of the lyrics and substandard music which originate in Jamaica and elsewhere and give Rihanna a pass solely on the basis that she is Barbadian. How hypocritical can one be? We cannot be a nation lamenting the slide in our moral standard but lift up onto the hills a Bajan artist who exploits said wholesome standards which Canon Marshall offers as the basis for our past successes. Donโ€™t we see a conflict or are we so intoxicated by the fact local girl makes big that we are willing to toss standards through the nearest window.

For what it is worth Rihanna, congrats on getting a top award from your fans BUT when our daughter grows up we do NOT want her to be like you.

    @David & MoneyBrain
One at a time, one at a time, dear gentlemen I will deal with you all one at a time.

David. Forgive me but but this typing thing is not my forte. Between the time read your opening remarks and initial responses the hundred other voices had expressed (remarkably and quite uncharacteristically) consistent and chorused opinion. Maybe a thousand Frenchmen aren’t always wrong after all.

I love the way you so seamlessly merge into the mob despite being the one being hunted in the first place! Were you not the original author, initial instigator, prime mover and shaker and fearless leader who thunderously declared that “WE” do not want our daughters to grow up to be like “HER”?
Come come David, don’t hide behind the skirts of others, let me see YOUR true face! Don’t let the “others” tell me what YOU were trying to say as opposed to what YOU actually have said! I know you are better than that!

and exactly WHAT values do WE the (esteemed) parents inculcate that I have so obviously missed? Are not all those I list at the end NOT what the royal we desire? Are they not everything that we say and require of the perfect personality? Too boring, nobody wants you. Too exciting, STILL nobody wants you. It’s a very fine line and tightrope taunt thin wire to wondrously walk.

Who should she be? What YOU WANT, what WE want or what THEY want?
You know the story of the old man, the son and the donkey they were taking to market. Trying to please everybody they ended up losing the donkey and pleasing nobody.

And this being drugged thing by the superficial representations of stars. I would only be playing devils advocate by disagreeing with the point you are establishing here. But, the question still remains. Are you blaming HER for that? Are you blaming her for them not being there for their own children or is she like the pied piper or something? Parents not being PARENTS. Tell me what’s new.

And WE claim her as our own. Yet the Bajan half of her appears to have been the unstable drugged out part and the Guyanese half the stronger who kept everything together! WE the Barbadian parent should be most proud!

And mr. / mrs /miss massa Money Brain. Are my FACTS somehow incorrect or just somewhat more like an inconvenient truth?
And when did I exactly separate the races? Didn’t black people sell their own black people to other black people just like the white people did (and still do) too?

-and exactly why is White slavery today an international issue but we don’t mind the black child freedom fighters of Africa. We still buy conflict diamonds and gold clothes produced by chained workers in sweat shops.
Black, white, yellow, brown or some other shade outside or just in between, clearly the only color that matters (to you) is green. Do you assert that such “common” and principled value systems are the only ones you recommend we all share? But then again, your preferred mom de plume does say a lot.

And this argument that I hear over and over again that it is all just an act and she really is someone else behind the spotlight. Give me a break people, didn’t you see Battleship?? She really isn’t that good an actress!
And to be in character 24/7 on set in studio on Instagram and Facebook on stage and in Media Takeout or on Spring Garden.
AND when exactly has she EVER done anything to suggest that exactly what you see is not exactly what you get?
And I am confused. We praise her for being so IN control when we feel like it on Sunday then say she is just another puppet on a string when we feel like it on Monday.

And when has SHE ever said otherwise? When has ANYONE ELSE close to her off in the know ever said otherwise?
Aaaaaand WHY should she be someone different? Because you want her to be someone different? What’s wrong with who she is right now??? Why do we always want to see someone else in the mirror of our own reflection? To examine and criticize someone else’s love handles?
And plllllease don’t tell me that you “didn’t get my drift”. Was my attempt at sarcasm so very far off? Did I really have to provide named examples like the Hilton’s and the Kardashians and the fake pooch Trini Niki Minaj? I am DELIBERATELY highlighting people with a little talent that have blown them up into seemingly much bigger ones. And did you hear Rihana at 15? Any one of a thousand 15 year olds that cross the X Factor stages in the US every year would blow her away! But where are THEY now?
It’s not just about raw talent but the million little things that all need to fall into place around that talent to take it to that next level. Chantal (was) a better singer. Vita Chambers is (probably) a better singer and Allison will (always) be the better dancer but will they ever reach where Rihana is now? (Definitely) not. And maybe they don’t need to. Maybe they are happy exactly where they are at this stage of their own journeys and isn’t that quite enough?
And finally, if David had wanted to say that Bim should be careful then he SHOULD have just said so. Instead he choose to position HER in his crosshairs.

WE rushed to jump on her bandwagon with the bestowing of the diplomatic passport. WE invited ourselves onto her stage and insinuated ourselves into her life. And despite the fact that she has openly said her role is not to be this “desired” role model that many certain peoples want her to be we ain’t going anywhere!
We have the biggest star in the WORLD today and still don’t have a CLUE about how to use her! Did you see that ridiculous ad campaign last year? Was that a joke?

Money. The story that needs to be said is not one about her but more one about us.
That’s all I am trying to say.

    Regards
    Cyprian

  4. @David,
I am glad that the evidence from this blog is that the majority of contributors love Rihanna. I watched a special on WNED/PBS on Barbara Streisand and what she went through, but what impressed me is that when she was around the same age as Rihanna shestated her intention to be successful. She also determined that nothing was going to prevent her from achieving her objective. Rihanna said the same thing and as she apologised to the people of Westbury road for keeping them awake with her singing, she was also focussed on her goal. She has succeeded and must be held in our esteem
Khalil Gibran in “the Prophet” on the subject of children says” Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of time. They come through you, but you cannot be in their thoughts. I would recommend this poem to you as must reading. then you will understand that we cannot direct their thoughts. We have to guide them , give them the best advice, and then be there for them if they fall. But if we teach them the right way they will not fall.
Stop paying attention to news that is designed for idiots and rumourmongers. Whatever you say, that is Our Rihanna and we love her.

  5. @Cyprian
I go by Money Brain for the obvious reason that I have a brain for Money.
Now Cyprian you should know better than join your inferiors on this MB by making negative inferences purely because i am in the Money business, it just does NOT compute that one Kolij grad would deal so superficially with another and expect not to be exposed.

Are all Lawyers CROOKS? Are ALL Doctors just lackeys of Big Pharma? Do ALL photographers overcharge for Wedding Pictures because they appreciate that their clients are emotionally vulnerable to such?

BTW i defended Rihanna by saying she may just maybe obeying orders and fitting in with what is expected of her as she changed from teenager to adult. Personally, i am very proud that R is Bajan BUT upset she is carrying somethings it tad far and her involvement with CB is annoying because i desire better for her. My main criticism was with the Bim Branding/ Ambassador angle, there is a reason why Tiger and Lance lost their sponsorships. Some believe any publicity is good, in certasin circumstances I would doubt it.

Cyprian for me there is no inconvenient truth BUT sometimes incorrect ways of influencing youth.

  6. @Cyprian

Have no idea why you and others believe that the BU household hates Rihanna. To repeat, we don’t want to raise our daughter to espouse the bahaviours of a Rihanna and this is our right. It is as simple as that! Commonsense says that a parent had that right to raise their children as they see fit.

I will at once withdraw my crude attempt at humor as by no means was there any attempt to belittle or insult or join others in an inferior level of discussion.
    But.
The obvious reason you choose your mom du plume is not so obvious to most as you may think.
    And still.
    My points all stand.

I don’t understand your references to not all lawyers being crooks etc. I have NEVER attacked any group or individual nor would ever do so. That is why I use my own name. I never knew what you did nor was making any comment on your expertise to do so. Unless it is written here and effects this argument that is all that matters to me.
I say what I believe I need and have to say as it has to be said with no fear of anybody challenging my truths. Everything I say is here in black and white.

I am also simply and honestly replying to what you and David have written but by extension I am dealing with the pointless arguments presented by others.

We all seem to want to defend Rihanna in our own particular way. But as I concluded by saying the discussion shouldn’t be about her but more about us.
    My arguments all still stand.

    And BTW.
YOU started by asking me if I didn’t think about the criticism that Elvis and other deserving white girls had to endure too before they became famous when quite obviously from what I wrote I was only highlighting a particular few to emphasize my point.

And about high standards and low standards. A thief can have very high standards. But it all depends who is judging.
Spartina society held their babies up to incredibly high standards and their “civilized” society threw them off a cliff if they didn’t make the grade.

    Point.
standards are agreed on , yes. But usually mostly by those who have the power and position to do so. So smut is smut is smut is smut. Who says its smut?

I have to say I do not ‘LOVE’ R. The fact that she is Bajan is totally irrelevant to me. As someone said there are far better singers (her upper and lower registers are very suspect) and Tamara T was a far better dancer and many, many others. Eventually she will probably have a weight problem. Maybe she thinks she already does.

But none of that matters. I wish her very well though she does not need my good wishes nor those of any here. Doubtless she has had many ‘right’ breaks and life’s little tricks have fallen on her side of the table. Ultimately, she has achieved what she has by being the person she is and for that I respect her and admire her. She certainly has more courage than most. Her morals are her business. As someone said, she has not set out to be an icon of anything – other than, and this by the way, of someone who has ‘made it’ – and so you can’t nail her fingers to a music stand for failing to be one.

Doubtless she is, at root, a very ordinary person who happens to have made what we call ‘stardom’. She is not required to be, in this dreadfully over-worked concept. a ‘role model’. Why would anyone in their right minds wish to be other than whom they truly are? This evening I sat in a certain church and saw and listened to a certain cleric whom we have mentioned on here a lot lately. And then I thought of this post and R and asked myself who, in terms of their lives, was ultimately true to their calling and what they were truly meant to be as real people, not manufactured people. I’ll leave you to work out my answer, though I can tell you it’s not as simple as might be supposed.

  13. Mark Fenty,

Thanks for the compliment in your 6.02 pm comment.

    David,

You said, you will NOT rubbish our commentary in the same way that Professor Emeritus Persaud did at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination a couple years ago.

First, it is a very horrible thing for the PDC to sense how you are inevitably retreating from the very battle you started, and that you are doing so by the force of the many facts rationalizations that have been unleashed on you by many commenters under this thread.

And a retreat from those facts et al now to where? Where the PDC is concerned, back to a distant event? But we will go there with you, for the moment!!

Where and when did Persaud do so?

Are you sure about what you are writing about, David??

Are you sure that the event of which you referred to was at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination?

Are you sure that you know who has been writing ALL the PDC articles/posts/comments on BU over the years, sufficient that you can point a finger at who you think it was/is that had attended the event?

Of whom are you speaking and that is a member of the PDC that had attended this event, and that had their commentary, as you so asserted, rubbished by Persaud?

Are you sure that Persaud up to now has ever dealt with the issues that were raised by the person?

Are you sure about what you are writing?

Indeed, if you are really sure about these things, then let the BU network know what you are writing about!!

The type of journalist/person you are, we know you will never properly respond to these questions.

  15. @PDC et al

The challenge with debating some of you is that you see it as a contest where there must be a winner and a loser. In a debate like this there can be no clear path given the subjectivity of the issue. When the dust is settled a parent will raise up their offspring in the way it chooses, this is their prerogative. We used Rihanna but we could have easily inserted Miley Cyrus and a host of others who peddle smut as art because there is a ready market for it. If she makes another million BU is glad for Rihanna but guess what? There are other values like modesty, respect for self etc which we hold dear.

Yes, it is a social intellectual contest and it is for the philosophical dialectical scientific THE TRUTH, and with the only winner being just that – THE TRUTH. And the loser being THE UNTRUTH.

That is why if you had used an academic scientific approach in attempting to ascertain THE TRUTH pertaining to describing analysing the likely actual causes connections contradictions that would have been leading to the various cultural shifts taking place in Barbados, the above thread would have been absent of much of the emotion subjectivity biases polemics that was behind its fruition.

  26. @ David [BU]

You said and i quote “Have no idea why you and others believe that the BU household hates Rihanna”

Of late Blogmaster it has become the modus operandi of commenters to (conveniently??) ignore the concept of “loving the sinner and hating the sin”

I err to the side of volition when i say conveniently since that would ascribe knowledge aforethought as opposed to it being out of plain igrunce and incapacity to discern the difference.

Which father or mother with a deviant son or daughter can so hate their offspring that they “suffer not a witch to live?”

The problem is that when you float a topic with these esoterics not all of the audience, i make no reference to AC/DC nor Cocky Locky, is capable of understanding the nuances and, depending on which demi-god you mention in your blog, the scions and defenders of the faith come forth in numbers, Legion, to defend the Holy Land.

You have tried more than once to focus certain of the readers on the context of your submission alas, to no avail.

Add Fumble to what list? List of incompetent fools? Rihanna is not a lying hypocrite who goes back on her word, overrules decisions previously agreed with colleagues and makes the MoF look like a blasted idiot to the point of being stressed out and on the verge of resigning before he commits political hara-kiri.

For example, Rihanna made a commitment to donate a few millions to the QEH and she honoured her pledge. Can we say the same about the hypocrite you want to add to the list? We shall see what he has to say (if anything) about the sending home of the 3,000 workers whom he assured in September would be safe since he met with all Heads of Ministries and Departments and they were able to find the necessary costs savings to prevent people from going home.
