Rihanna receiving her AMA Icon Award from her mother.
Rihanna receiving her AMA Icon Award from her mother.

We have had a couple of interesting news items in recent days which served to piqued the curiosity of members of the BU household. Sir Hilary Beckles is of the view Barbados must capitalize on the success of Rihanna and her one billion dollar enterprise. To support his view he referred to Jamaica having built an industry around Bob Marley and reggae.  BU is unsure how Beckles is able to make the comparison to Marley riding the crest of an indigenous genre of music anchored in the DNA of a nation. Rihanna maybe Barbadian – with Guyanese lineage -but her success has been manufactured on the back of a US-international genre of music. How Barbados can bottle and leverage for success the way Jamaica did for Marley remains highly sceptical but BU is optimistic.

Then we heard from Canon Frank Marshall on the need for Barbadians to embrace values which represented the core of what drove our success of yesteryear. Many will query though whether these values have to be embodied in a religious dogma to qualify.  There is a strong view held by some Barbadians that when the Church played a leading role in our society the nation appeared to be in a better place morally, socially and economically.

Most if not all Barbadians have felt the urge to congratulate Rihanna winning the first AMA Icon Award.  BU offers our congratulations BUT acknowledges she is a R&B performer who uses the imagery of sex bordering on smut, suggestive lyrics and dance to peddle her stuff. This is a compromising of the very same values which Canon Marshall has attributed to our success as a nation.  Bear in mind Rihanna is our Youth and Cultural Ambassador although we believe this is an avenue used by government to provide access to a ‘red’ passport.

Our view may not be widely supported but it is ours nevertheless. As a nation we cannot be critical of the lyrics and substandard music which originate in Jamaica and elsewhere and give Rihanna a pass solely on the basis that she is Barbadian. How hypocritical can one be? We cannot be a nation lamenting the slide in our moral standard but lift up onto the hills a Bajan artist who exploits said wholesome standards which Canon Marshall offers as the basis for our past successes. Don’t we see a conflict or are we so intoxicated by the fact local girl makes big that we are willing to toss standards through the nearest window.

For what it is worth Rihanna, congrats on getting a top award from your fans BUT when our daughter grows up we do NOT want her to be like you.

  4. I think it was Franz fanon who prophesied that there will come a time when success will no longer be measured by the content of one’s character-

President Clinton received overwhelming support particularly from women for his inappropriate behaviour in the Monica Lewinsky scandal and his blatant lies told to the American public for over a year. so it did not begin with our beloved Rhi Rhi nor will it end with her.

Materialism has now been entrenched as the order of the day. WE just have to be prepared to train our children to deal with the present challenges and fast emerging ones.
And do not look to the church now riddled with more false prophets than ever before for guidance.

  5. @BUT when our daughter grows up we do NOT want her to be like you.

Hardly think that Rihanna cares much what BU feels to be honest or the rest of Barbados for that matter. By now she must have learned real well how fickle her own people are when it comes to sharing in the success of one of their own, always picking at foolishness to try and bring the accomplished down whilst they wallow in a quagmire of hate and apparently taking pride in a society that has reached rock bottom in its every facet – and one that should be the last one to throw stones at any one, for anything at all.

If you ask me it is Rihanna that should be saying “But when my daughter grows up I do not want her to be like many in Barbados.”

Rihanna is a daughter who loves her country, her mother and the rest of her family (and her friends) – her roots deeply imbedded in the rock – and has even given back to her birth-home that continuously puts her down. She is a daughter who followed her dreams, and is now living her dreams. She is a daughter who, believe it or not, works real hard – her daily routine to keep up with all she is achieving has to be one of extreme discipline – you just have to follow her career to know this is so. Her music is good and some of her dance moves just reflect a society, pointing out its ills mostly, and does not particularly reflect her private life or her personal morality. But as per usual – some people ’bout hey know better because they live with her on a daily basis – in their small minds.

Now I do not believe that Barbados needs to make her a Dame or even bestow any big time title on her. But to reap some benefits? If this island were smart they could encourage much that would bring some extra cash into their empty coffers. By the way, it is Bob Marley’s family that has taken Bob and his image into every imaginable area of commerce, keeping a tight rope on it all too although turning a blind eye to those who reap a little benefit on the side – and Jamaica, the country, certainly reaps a lot of benefit from what the family have created. It could be done here too.

I would leave ’bout hey well alone if I was Rihanna, but she still, for her Bajan reasons, like to come home and call out the name of her island at every opportunity. Perhaps she needs to talk more about her Guyanese roots when in front of millions of people. How will Barbados react to that eh?

Bless Rihanna. Hell! I see no reason why my daughter should not be like her. To be honest.

  6. @Onions

Besides having a million bucks and attending Combermere are these the only measures you have of success?

  7. The BU household could careless if Rihanna cares what we think. What the BU household is focused on is how we inculcate wholesome values in those we have influence.

The very simple point BU is making is that we can’t give Rihanna a pass on the shut she pushes and condemn local and Jamaican artistes for creating smut. What does it say about us when we do?

  8. @ David

  12. On this blessed sunday morning Lord please come fuh yuh world all this moral indignation and hypocrisy too much to bear..

  13. David – have to say sadly that if you cannot see the measures of Rihanna’s success beyond having a million dollars and going to Combermere, tings real bad ’bout hey. I thought you of all people would not be quite so blind.

Question: Do you really believe by the way that if there was no Rihanna, that Barbados would not be in the mess it is with its youth or for that matter its values so highly regarded in the past? It is not Rihanna that has caused this deterioration of youth and values. It is those in high places that have shown disregard for so much – from morality to everything else that a society stands for – that has caused the youth to want a piece of their pie. Nothing to do with Rihanna, dear David. At all. At all.

  16. Sir hilary has made a suggestiions and the response is almost predicatable . Barbadians are “script thinkers” without a script there are lost not surprising that most would find it incomprehensible to decipher the point of Sirhilary beckles comments.

  17. WE OWN…….WE OWN ?……gimme a break buddy !

  18. it would be great for getting younger tourists to Barbados if all the girls in Barbados acted like Rhianna….it would fit in with Cropover and we could compete with Bangkok for the touriss that go there. She is a great singer but so is Celine Dion.

  19. David you and your family are blessed to have such high moral standards.

However Barbadians have not changed much in my lifetime except we used to hide what we did.

Rihanna is a superstar in the music world and I am glad that Barbados benefits from her fame.

  20. I am curious,” Jamaica made an industry around bob marley” didn’t they shoot him?

  21. @David “Besides having a million bucks and attending Combermere are these the only measures you have of success?”

I gather that Rihanna is a loving and dutiful daughter, granddaughter and sister; and a loyal and generous citizen of Barbados

In my books those things count for a lot, lot.

Those were the exactly the things that Frank Marshall was talking about.

I would love if I had a daughter as accomplished as Rihanna.

RIHANNA girl on this Blessed Sunday morning DON’T TEK ON DE HATERS.

    They just jealous, that’s all.

  22. @ David n Onions

“Besides having a million bucks and attending Combermere are these the only measures you have of success?”

It is a sad day for a decent minded independent people when David has to call Onions out with this “measure of success”. I am amazed at how much of this I see on this site, like if one never took a bus to Waterford then you are a failure in Barbados. This is getting old real quick. Please take note of David’s comment (concise but adequate) and make the appropriate adjustment.

I think from Onions’ general comments he has more in him than the Combermere thing! He is OK I think, smart and articulate but get over your teenage days and recognize that that is just an acute angle in the larger circle of life,

On a more positive note congratulations to Earl “The Pearl” Maynard on being honored on Independence Day, God Blessed Earl on Independence day. It was well deserved. My role model when I was lifting in the 70’s and reading every muscle mag I could get my hands on, What an amazing story, Anyone wanting a real Bajan flavor (besides Rhi Rhi and Sobers) should read up on his story and travels. An amazing journey of doors opening for a son of the soil who deemed to be different. This is a success story of the ages and no he did not catch a bus to Waterford. I had to throw that in for the rest of us that lacked the knowledge and understanding at 11 years old, like Onions, to pass the test to catch the bus.

  23. Bajans just don’t like their OWN……Jamaicans can tell you the roots of the Sca music…Jackie Opel….as a matter of fact , he is better known there than HERE…..go look in Westbury Cemetery for his grave site, if you can find it……He developed the Spooge music….ask any youngster about spooge…..are they any books in our schools of his prowess..amm NO….
    What wrong wid we doooooa?

  24. Fuck you who wrote this piece of shit

  25. @David “she is a R&B performer who uses the imagery of sex bordering on smut, suggestive lyrics and dance to peddle her stuff. This is a compromising of the very same values which Canon Marshall has attributed to our success as a nation.”

    LOL!!!

Bajans have always loved sex. How come you think that there are 280,000 Bajans on the rock and many, many more in other countries. Some people say there are at least a few Bajans in every country of the world.

NONE of these Bajans (not even Bush tea) are the result of immaculate conceptions. They are all the result of wet, wonderful, mind blowing, juicy sex. That is the truth.

Bajans have always loved dancing. The British tried to impose a staid form of worship and of being on us, but THEY WERE REMARKABLY UNSUCCESSFUL The dancing just won’t go away. Bajans dance in the house, in the dance halls, in church, on the road. Rihanna dances on stage.

As a matter of fact many Bajans left the Anglican Church because it is seen as too staid, as I am sure that Dean Marshall and the rest of the Anglican hierarchy has figured out.

Bajans flocked to the Pentecostal churches where they feel free, like David to dance before the Lord.

If you think that Bajans don’t like dancing ask any mother who has felt her child dance in the womb, and then after its birth respond by dancing to the same music (and I am speaking here of children who cannot stand yet, but can dance, dance with joy)

  26. @Oh Mercy

You are missing the point. BU really does not give a damn that Rihanna is considered a global success so too is 50 cents piece and others. What we care about is what values we believe we would want our family and people we influence to demonstrate. Rihanna is a superstar who espouses a genre of music which promotes smut. Would we want our daughter to plant a kiss on the mouth of another female because it is cool or generate PR? Would we want our daughter to be a performer who has to skin her crotch in the faces of her audience? Annually our good friend DJ, Admiral and others on local radio moan about the standard of local music yet when BU holds a similar opinion about Rihanna we are labeled haters? Where do we draw the line? Is there a place for moral standards to be entertained and applied to ALL? Hear this: because criticism is pointed at a person or there is disagreement does it mean that there we are haters? What it means is, we are not hypocritical.

  27. @balance “I think it was Franz fanon who prophesied that there will come a time when success will no longer be measured by the content of one’s character-”

Franz Fanon said no such thing.

Get thee up to the public library and read some Fanon hear!!!

  28. @Simple Simon

Your simple analysis does not merit a response.

  29. Perhaps none of us have the moral right to question Rhianna’s path to glory and success which most of us are hoping would redound to the benefit of our present ‘down- in- the- dumps’ tourism industry because we all have ‘motes’ in our eyes one way or another but I would like to share portions of this excerpt taken from Friday’s Daily Telegraph , a British Newspaper under the title ” I wish I’d never been child star in Mary Poppins”
‘The actress has now said that, in hindsight, she should never have done the film, insisting children should “grow at their own pace”. She said, children should be kids, learning at the right time, (not) when it is convenient for others.
Speaking on the perils of being a child star, she added; “It’s not normal for a child to have that kind of focus on them. If you are surrounded by yes people, you’re going to struggle in later life. That’s why I’ve never wanted my children to become child actors” .The mother -of- three said she “never regretted” giving up films , after refusing to appear topless for one as a teenager. end of quote.

  30. We are a nation of Pharisaical kill-joys (which means we act-up when it suits us) and this post is typical of the genre. But, of course, the ‘Marley generation’, as the post says, is wholly different from the R thing – whatever it is precisely. If Beckles Brain sought identity rather than resemblance or the spear of metaphor then…….

Mind – as a matter of fact – what evidence is there that we ‘suffer’ from a decline in moral standards? If Marshall means falling congregations at the Cathedral perhaps the first stop is to look closely within its slumbering stones. If he means the nuclear family then is that and was that ever a paradigm here? If he means a fall in educational standards, we are back to Beckles Brain. Do we lie more than we did? Do we respect each other less than we did? (maybe we do – why should title, office, age etc be a guarantee of respect?). Do we support each other less than we did? (I don’t know – but I can say that the concept of ‘friendship’ is a very watery thing).

Marshall pinpointed ‘individualism’ as the culprit – by which he means selfish people who have no regard for community. No. Selfish people are just selfish people. The individualist makes his own mind up and refuses, so far as possible, to be conditioned or brain-washed. He is wary of the lies and prejudices of the crowd and is naturally rebellious. It is interesting that Marshall does not recognize the supreme individualist – Jesus of Nazareth.

  31. @balance “Materialism has now been entrenched as the order of the day.”

So all of Barbados’ plantation/sugar history was based on what?

    Altruism?

    Stupseee!!!!!!!!!!

Barbados came to be through NAKED CAPITALISM.

Only now like some people vex because the naked capitalism is now on the other side.

Rihanna try and mek ya money do.

Historically in Barbados other people have made money on naked capitalism, and at the same time they owned and managed all the instruments of the state and the church.

And nobody was talking *hite about materialism being entrenched.

Materialism has ALWAYS BEEN ENTRENCHED IN BARBADOS.

    ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS.

  33. A commenter going by the rubric Back in Time Jack made a claim in a blog at 8.55 am, November 30, 2013, that Cabinet finished at 8 pm on Thursday after Sinckler announced his illness, and the GOCB (present he was ) confirmed the IMF conditions, including laying off of 6,000 workers, and the introduction of a mini-budget with higher rates of taxes and more new taxes.

Furthermore, there is in today’s Sunday Sun, Sunday, December 1, 2013, a news story in which a claim is made that job lay offs in the public sector that could exceed 3000 are imminent, foreshadowing a bleak Christmas for many Barbadian homes. Read a copy of the Sunday Sun for more information on the story.

Now, against the backdrop of these claims being made one quickly behind the other and in the face of this localized political economic depression worsening especially for the broad masses and middle classes of people in this country, it is shameful that this type of discussion is going on here, BU, about some aspects of Rihanna’s lifestyle, some aspects of her international music career, the music and other awards she has been receiving from whom so ever.

Such writings must therefore be seen by the PDC as trivial and infelicitous when contrasted with the fact that the very wrenching wretched circumstances of thousands upon thousands of people in Barbados grovelling and eking out their daily lives, living off the bare social material financial minimums, ought to be seen by our friend David and, by extension, John Public, as so crucial and important every day news, that they ought to be constantly religiously reported on, and without delay, in the new and traditional news and social media of this country.

Furthermore, these dire circumstances ought to be seen by the same David and John Public as being so necessary and sufficient to be discussed that every hour every day so many many fora in this island ought to be springing up to deal with them, and with a view of finding many fundamental developmental sustainable solutions to the fundamental social political material financial problems that are underlying and perpetuating them in this Barbados.

Finally, the question must be asked by the PDC: when are many more people in Barbados going to be taking these kinds of dreaded local material financial circumstances and conditions more seriously? When like hell? Some time ago one of our members had the privilege to have read a very trenchant PEP column piece and the writer was actually stating that unless Barbadians begin to take themselves seriously nobody else will be taking them seriously. No wonder that the government of Barbados appears to be being laughed at by some outside of this country.

  34. @Simple

Let us define what WE means for your simple mind. it means the BU household.

  35. @PDC

Your pedestrian rant is endemic to where we now find ourselves. A wholesome economy is comprised of many strands, social, economic, spiritual and the like. your simplistic view that the blog is about Rihanna’s lifestyle and not the kind of morals households and family units should be focused on developing explains a lot of things. The house is burning yet we pretend.

  36. @Sith “She is a great singer but so is Celine Dion.”

And Celine Dian was born and raised where?

Was talking to one of the Canadian posse on Independence Day. They went down to the Barbados flag raising at City Hall and the temperature was minus 18 degrees Celsius. And it ain’t even winter yet.

The difference between Celine and Rihanna is that in Canada it is impossible to take off most of ya clothes and wuk-up outdoors.

In Barbados we can and do. 365 days per year.

Tell Celine to try dancing in a bikini on any Canada street today, or tomorrow, or next week, or next month, or next season.

  37. Didn’t Farrakhan label her filthy, and her fans swine? Or is he only right when he says the blacks should not work in the service industry?

  38. @David December 1, 2013 at 9:56 AM “Simple let us define what WE means for your simple mind. it means the BU household.”

And who is the BU household?

And what do we know about you?

And what were you doing when you were 25?

And has any of your naughty stuff been taped/photographed?

And would the BU commenters (as separate from the BU household) be shocked if we saw it?

    Doing what?

    LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. @Simple

You don’t have to know squat about the BU household, all you need to know is what the clarification of WE represents.

    @PDC

Also note that BU has posted hundreds of blogs about the need for government to depart from the policies which have now brought us here. Therefore there is not a thirsty need to post a blog which states a message which has been dealt with over and over on BU. The harder you fall the harder you learn. Don’t worry, there is comfort in using the iPhone as a paper weight.

  42. @ Simple Simon

Celine Dion is a better singer and she is respected WITHOUT body tatoos. Rihanna is recognized as a great singer but uneducated, metally imbalanced and NOT RESPECTED. 48. “Killing me Softly with his song” Roberta Flack. This was one of the slow melodic songs of the 70″s. I submit this tune to make 2 points (i) “what is the purpose and function of a tune if not to bring joy to the person listening? is music supposed to “kill” and undermine values?

Joshua, in implementing “the mystery of sound, cadence and vibration” marched around the walls of Jericho for many days and, as with all things that are subjected to incessant, repetitive, unrelenting impact, the walls of that city came tumbling down.

I dont want to get metaphysical here but I would ask those of us who have rightfully commented that Rihanna is a very rich 26 year old , pause briefly and contemplate “the metaphorical city” which she, and others, for she is not alone, in uttering discordant discants, straffed with pornographic imagery, is “undermining” the cities of our minds.

It is not hard to add the existing Ri Ri as Barbados’ indigenous contribution to supporting smut and deviancy across the world.

Ri Ri is no less a threat to youth than was/is Death Metal with its words of death, murder, rape, mutilation, dominance, rage, hatred, torture etc.

Yes “sex” (another name for smut) does sell and yes, through selling smut she is a multi-millionaire.

What do men like Wesley Snipes, Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington and other black men, the operative word being men, have that Ri Ri does not have?

They DO NOT appear in movies which denigrate the BLACK MAN!

That is because of choice, they exercise choice as to what they will be part of.

I would caution you all to consider the fact that Ri Ri, when she was first discovered was not then able to chart her path now, at 26, still does not have the character to chart a path other than this one which has been created for her.

She is rich in $$ and poor in character. A dilemma of inconsequential proportion since character does not spend at Yves St Laurent

In 1936 an incident shocked the British Empire. It was the abdication of the British King Edward, for Wallis Simpson, FOR LOVE.

By what process can Ri Ri, as beautiful and as talented as she might be, abdicate this throne of fame and fortune, Jezebel of Smut, and acquire the values and virtues to say no to the entertainment engine that commands her?

Character, like that which Oprah has, does not auto-combust, it is something which is carefully nurtured by parents, family and community. I have not said anything about her Bajan father, Guyanese mother nor sacrosanct education at Cawmere.

The young woman’s antics may insult the (hypocritical) values that some of us purport to have and yes, I, old fogey that I am, rise to support David[BU] in saying, millions notwithstanding, I would not want my daughter/grand-daughter to grow up like you.

Take back your life for the star of fame and fortune soon burns out e.g. Madonna

Thanks very much but I did preface my remarks with the words “I Think” but they are relevant in my view nonetheless.
