The Time to Face the Facts Show will host this week our resident tourism commentator Adrian Loveridge. We understand also on the panel will be former minister of tourism Noel ‘Barney’ Lynch to discuss Facts about the Caribbean’s tourism. Respect to Adrian for agreeing to be in the same space as Lynch after the embarrassment he suffered at Voice of Barbados in 2007.

Rewarding the failures of former Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch – Net visitors gain for Cricket World Cup: 44 long stay visitors over normal !!!

    By Adrian Loveridge

‘That $14 million was supposed to have been self-liquidated, where we would have sold packages that would have more than covered that cost’!

This is the economic justification put forward by a former Minister of Tourism.

    Now let’s do the maths!

The loan was actually US$14,772,000. Presumably before any interest payments and we have to assume that figure included any ‘arrangement fees’.

Carnival Destiny has a stated passenger capacity of 2,642 persons.

So! On a simple cost per person that meant that each passenger would have had to pay US$5,591.

Arguments could be made that additional revenue could reduce that figure if the ship was redeployed for the CWC 2007 semi-final in St. Lucia, but why would the Barbadian taxpayer be expected to subsidise the tourism industry in that island?

So could someone please explain to me how this amount could be ‘self-liquidated’?

We can all recall the ludicrous figures been thrown into the public and media domain right up until the now infamous ‘Down to Brass Tacks’ programme of the 25th March of that year.

“’25 cruises ships’, ‘90,000 long stay visitors in the week of the final’.”

But in reality, all that CWC did for our tourism industry was produce a net gain of just 44 long stay visitors for the first four months of 2007.

Of course, some of us spoke out about this lunacy at the time, including tour operators who knew the actual facts, but the deafening noise of the so-called ‘experts’ was overwhelming.

When it became apparent to even those that have a limited understanding of tourism, just how many hotel rooms remained empty in peak months like February and March and during the hosting of the final, it became even more difficult to justify the chartering of Carnival Destiny.

The so called ‘experts’ then went into the now customary damage limitation mode by attempting to justify the fiasco by heralding the promised contribution that would be made by the ‘legacy’ benefits.

Perhaps three years on, someone could put a Dollar figure on those legacy benefits when compared against the costs already spent on, or committed to hosting the event?”

Don’t forget to talk about this ADRIAN!!!!

Just a short note on the more famous ???TOURISTS??? that have been made more than welcome on your shores…… Lets hope that your country will be more diligent when it comes to allowing counterfeit drug pushers invade your little island.
A short while ago the wife of a good friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. She, at the advice of her doctor, went into treatment using a drug called Avastin. For six months her treatment went along just fine. Her cancer was under control with her symptoms being reduced on a daily bases.
Then, all the sudden her cancer returned with a vengeance……the drugs that she had been taking had suddenly stopped working and her cancer started to spread uncontrollably. It was then that rumors of counterfeit Avastin being shipped to the USA to unsuspecting doctors and clinics. With this knowledge her doctor had the Avastin checked and found out that what he had been administrating to my friends wife was counterfeit and contained NO active ingredients.
A month later my friend’s wife, like a lot of those who were treated by this counterfeit drug, died of advanced cancer. We do not know if she would have survived if she had been receiving a non-counterfeit drug and this would be very hard to prove in court…..therefore, due to the costs involved and the legal blockages put in place by Canada Drugs and their numerous internet drug companies scattered worldwide (and outside of the American Judicial System) any legal or civil charges were not activated.
I am requesting the help of the general public in finding any pertinent information regarding Mr. Tom Haughton, Mrs. Maryanne Thorkelson (Haughton) and Mr. Kris Thorkelson, the owners and operators of the hundreds of internet drug companies (All working under the main company called Canada Drugs based in Winnipeg, Canada) with web sites scattered worldwide.
At one point Mr. Tomas Haughton had set up shop in Barbados utilizing their lax laws and reputation of skirting international regulations especially with those who had deep pockets and plenty of graft monies to flaunt and spread around to the numerous politicians and government officials who readily stood with their greedy hands outstretched. Mr. Haughton was able, through his political and legal connections, escape prosecution in Barbados and hide out in Canada where he was able to sanitize any and all records of his existence (there is no public records of his existence and even with a physical search I could not find anything that even showed that he existed…..even his school records, his marriage records and those of his children have somehow disappeared from public view….what money will buy when it is spread around the right sources) thus hiding from public view.
Over the past two years I have been actively investigating the goings-on of Canada Drugs and those who operated this company distributing bogus counterfeit drugs to the unsuspecting public. I have been able trace the activities of one Mr. Tomas Haughton, who was the brains behind the operation, setting up hundreds of web sites to promote the sale of these counterfeit drugs. He was able to establish an operational base in the Barbados where, through the utilization of his inflated bank account, he was able to flaunt the law and ship these drugs to the unsuspecting public worldwide without fear of prosecution.
The list of government officials who were bought off in this banana republic, paid to look the other way and to lose any documents so/as to prevent any legal actions is endless. From what I have been able to discover is that multi dollars changed hands (I have not been able to find a positive paper trail but through international banking records and coming from the scuttle bug there was talk about huge cash withdrawals being made but no tracing as to the disposal of these monies were to be found) with most of this is said to have been distributed in and to officials in Barbados.
When Mr. Tomas Haughton left the country (after important paperwork has mysteriously disappeared and any format of charges were dropped) he seemed to disappear from the spotlight but he reappeared in his home town of Winnipeg Canada. There he has taken on the task of running his partners business in the same mannerism that he had done with the illegal counterfeit drug business.
It seems that, with the monies that were made through the sale of counterfeit drugs and the unscrupulous business practices that he had become famous for, this ???criminal???once again has found a way of circumstancing the laws of the land and inflating his and his partner’s bank accounts.
He,hiding behind his high priced legal team, RE:/
(Aikins Law, re:/ AIKINS, MACAULAY & THORVALSON LLP,
and represented by one JOHN B. MARTENS
occupying the 30th floor of 360 Main St., Winnipeg, Canada, R3C 4G1…
    phone number 204-957-0050)
and having a working address and heading
    Niakwa Park Place
    200-1310 Archibald Street,
    Winnipeg,
    Canada, R2J0Z4
With a phone number registered under Thorwin Real Estate re:/phone number 204-253-1885.

Once again he has found a safe haven, with the sanitation of official records, hidden from public view. To try and bring this individual to justice might be a pipe dream given the resources that he has at his disposal. Knowing his past history of using his political and legal influence (paid for through the enormous profits gained through his internet drug business) and the fact that he has become an expert at circumstancing the law, I realize that what I am trying to do will only come about with the assistance and information coming from those who he had maltreated.
These fugitives from justice might have found a safe haven hiding out in Canada but they are not forgotten. Just how many people, how many loved ones, who went to their doctors for treatment and were given not the treatments that would have saved their lives but a counterfeit drug being sold by a company whose main objective was inflating their bottom line??????? And how often have these criminals gotten off through them bribing or paying off government officials and the justice system allowing them to go scot free????? Just how many people have had their hopes and dreams shattered through the criminal actions of these predators who preyed upon the innocent sick and dying human beings who needed the help that this drug would have given them….that is if they had received the drugs that they needed not the counterfeit knockoff that was sold by these criminals who hide behind their lawyers and bought off politicians.?????? I feel that it is time to give them a taste of their own medicine!!!!!!!!
Please have your office write to him and their highly paid legal team who protects them from prosecution and let them know that they might be able to run but they will eventually get caught……They might be able to buy off and bribe those living in a third world banana republic but they will not escape just punishment……let’s make their miserable lives pure hell and give them an example of American Justice!!!!!
Any information regarding this criminal and his activities, no matter how trivial, would be greatly welcomed.
Please forward this message to any and every person that you can…..Lets get this criminal off the streets.

Please state who you are and how we contact you. A ‘friend of a friend’ is a little foggy.

    Well Well

Your enthusiasm is infectious but is it really necessary to quote at such great length from the post immediately before yours? Of course, I suppose if you say something often enough the thread qualifies for A+ credibility as with so much taken as axiomatic on here – but still……..

  6. Mr Loveridge

    Go for it.

  7. Mr Saunders

We had this discussion back in September at:

    http://bajan.wordpress.com/2013/09/22/counterfeit-avastin-drug-kingpin-now-living-in-canada/

As I said then – Due Diligence applauds your efforts and your determination.

Several BU family members weighed in on that discussion, and clearly you had a sympathetic audience who do not condone the likes of Tomas Haughton setting up business in Barbados

So, rather than restating what you said in September in this new thread, I respectfully suggest that you return to the original thread with something new to get that thread back in view; to reopen the original discussion.

The Caribbean Hotel Association he was FIRED from the post hardly 4 months after taking up the posting.”

So wha he got tuh tell people bout torism?

This “show” is really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I am wondering if this “show ” is in response to a comment I made on BU after watching a program on channel 109 about tourism in the Caribbean and the invited guest from Barbados was Peter Eddy and not ADRIAN LOVERIDGE.

Looks to me like someone went and beg to be on a similar show in order to save face.

Are you suggesting Adrian suffered embarrassment? Why would he have been embarrassed? Wasn’t it Lynch that was the laughing stock of the country and then went on to a well deserved loss off his seat in Parliament.

  16. CCC

Well, lol, you probably got that right. For myself, I couldn’t give a monkey’s….nor you I guess. Dissent against the party line on here renders you, as David has often said to me using legal jargon as you probably know, ‘hostile’.
Now a hostile witness is someone who is supposed to say one thing but who says another. For myself, and whichever ‘side’ I’m on, the important thing is truth-telling – being true to yourself. And that may very well mean offering support to those with whom I am usually at odds. The important thing so far as others are concerned is that there are people on BU whom I believe respect me and whom equally I respect. They are mostly people of independent disposition, natural rebels if you like. I’m sure in your way you can say the same.

  23. Rihanna No Show

This Rihanna story is getting really weird.

On page 9 of the October 21 edition of Business Monday there is a story about how BTA was undertaking a massive promotional campaign in the Caribbean to heighten the excitement for and to compel consumers (from the other islands) to travel to Barbados for the Rihanna Diamonds World Tour Concert on November 1.

It sounds like it was a desperate last minute attempt to sell out Kensington.

On October 25, tour organisers Live Nation Global Touring announced that the highly anticipated Barbados leg of Rihanna’s Diamond World tour, scheduled for Kensington Oval this coming Friday, has been postponed indefinitely due to “technical difficulties associated with the transport of equipment”.

Technical difficulties associated with the transport of equipment?

They got the equipment in in August 2011.

They apparently are having no technical difficulties with the transport of equipment into Dominican Republic tonight and Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

    Today, October 26 marketsnews.com at http://www.marketspress.com/rihanna-diamonds-world-tour-homecoming-concert-banned-barbados-government-3552/alanquinton.html reports:

“Rihanna Diamonds World Tour Homecoming Concert Banned by Barbados Government

According to many sources, Barbados Customs have seized 15 shipping containers from Rihanna’s Diamond Wold Tour”

    What is the real story?

Was the last minute full-court press around the Caribbean to sell it out a desperate attempt by BTA to convince the promoters not to cancel the show because it was far from a sell-out – and that would be a major blemish on the Rihanna brand; and on the Barbados brand.

Adrian, the public is entitled to know the facts.

I hope you can get to the facts about this on the Time to Face the Facts Show.

  24. Ross…………..you gotta remember the island seems to be teeming with anti-caribbean sentiment against people of Caribbean origin, never mind Barbados is part of the Caribbean, there are people on the island who would much prefer identify with the British and every other criminal known, i am talking about black people, it needs to be re-enforced that the criminal element is not only made up of Caribbean people but also the business people and tourists that wash into the island from the industrialized countries.

  25. While recrimination does nothing to address what is certainly a more perilous tourism product, irresistible is the need to shine the light of shame on the fraud that is in the person of Barney boy Lynch. He was the reason why I said on another thread that the Minister of finance was mild mannered in his attack on Starcom moderators.

  26. David;

Following on the due diligence story above. It now appears clear, whatever is the true reason for the cancellation of the Rihanna show, that Barbados needs a bush bath to change the spiral of bad luck we are now wrapped in. I don’t however think that David Thompson’s Obeah man should be the one called in to administer it.

Nothing is working the way it was supposed to. There are problems with the 2 Sandals that could spell less than the anticipated returns for those properties. The Rihanna concert that I personally, and all right thinking Bajans as well, hoped and expected would be a success is now “postponed” to next year. Is there anyone that would bet that it will really come off next year with all the glitter and spangles and FX inflows that was expected to be a sure spinoff for this one?

The government needs to take a fresh guard. If only as a token gesture and nothing more. The batsmen in the MoF and MOT need to be changed urgently to test if Bushtea’s BBE might be propitiated and send some help our way.

We are dropping over the cliff onto uncharted waters. We are not alone in that situation but we seem to be plummeting faster than most of our neighbours. Something needs to be done to restore some level of confidence and indeed LUCK in this country.

We really need a healthy dose of luck and some different thinking to change our likely outcomes. The Big Bush Bath anyone, Courtesy of Bush Tea using huge Brass Bowls for the concoctions?

  28. Man Checkit-out
Since independence, Barbados has enjoyed one of the most sustained periods of high and consistent growth of ANY country on earth.
When others were undergoing wild cyclic swings, with regular bouts with the IMF, with currency devaluations, with social unrest, with criminal insecurity, ….Barbados enjoyed comparative growth and security.

Wuh cud shiite! …..would you not think that it is about TIME FOR SOME KIND OF CORRECTION?
From a currency-value point of view ALONE, we are due MAJOR adjustments – even compared to TRINIDAD which owns most of this rock.
We have no assets – unlike many of the others…no oil, no gold, no bauxite, no forests…..and where we once had solid competent hard working people, we now have hoards of brass bowls with a lotta degrees – and not one ounce of common sense….

Tell Bushie why, in all logic, our economy should NOT contract by about 70%….
…..because we are so creative and productive?
    …..because BBE is a Bajan?
….or because wunna just like talking a lotta baseless shiite…?

…and it has NOTHING to do with luck. Bim used to be actively and deliberately blessed…..
It NO LONGER enjoys that status …for many reasons.

  29. Bush tea;

Yuh almost right. The time for correction has come!

But lady luck might have played a hand in the latest misfortune unless you think that the current government brass bowls are knowingly complicit in causing the cancellation of the big Rihanna show.

Surely, you must see that this lot has been dogged with misfortune re. their projects for improving the economy (but not in electoral matters) that in many cases might have been due to ineptness but at least in this one luck might have played a part.

Or is it just the BBE piling it on and thereby ensuring a drastic correction for the progress in earlier times?

Hope that the BBE allows the proper implementation of the excellent WTE project down the road.

  30. @ Bushie

the chickens have come home to roost, Those in charge of the bountiful economy where indeed “ToPSY BRASS BOWLS” and like the prodigal son saw no need to be prudent but run butt naked all over the place spending and partying like no tommorrow never giving thought about what if all the happy times come to screehing halt, Neva giving any concern to the most important reality of building a firm and secure foundation upon which this house stand, ,, HELLO ! , however tommorrow has indeed arrived and now the inevitable has descended upon us like a ton of bricks ,However i do believe GOD is bajan and he will forgive and give the leadership the vision and knoweldge necessary to see this once bountiful country regain it hardworking and deserving status of respect and crediabilty and financial security All is not LOSS.

  32. Two fools on the same show Avatar
Two fools on the same show

Honestly what value can Lynch offer to this program?
This is a man that bought a $ 1,750,000,000.00 house out his deal with Carnival Cruise Lines that costed the taxpayers of this country US $ 30 Mil to lease a Cruise Ship, this same man then left Barbados and went to the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association and was fired within two weeks of being there and sent back to Barbados then for him to come home lying and fooling Bajans and telling them the lie and the nonsense that he could not get a work permit, work permits are not issues for agencies like the CHTA it was the fact that they learnt the details of his stealing public funds and the learnt that he was a dishonest vagabond and they were not prepared for any negative fall out from having him around, ask Mr Sanguiette Chairman of the CHTA he did his research and he learnt what Lynch did while as Minister of Tourism in Barbados and promptly fired this crook.

Now honestly tell me what can Lynch or Loveridge off of value serious consideration to this show?

When we have access to person like Bernie Weatherhead or Mr Doyle’s from the Crane or Mr John Morphet from Royal Westmoreland Resort, all of whom own and operate real and serious hotel properties and unlike Loveridge who speaks from a very tunnel vision view point with his limited role as provider of hotel rooms on this island, his view point is not the experience of the industry that he is not embraced by not even the BHTA endorses his thinking so why should we or this radio show?

  33. @ac

What you have neglected to include in your one sides analysis is that the numbers show the DLP did not arrest spending when they turn came.

  34. Checkit
    🙂 ….wait you sure you ain’t Bushie’s son…..?

Well- you must know that BBE has blessed Bushie and family to overflowing…
As a result, the offspring have developed the attitude that such blessings are normal everyday rights.
    THEY ARE NOT!

Do you have ANY idea of the kind of “bad luck” most of the rest of the world have been enduring all these years?
Wunna know how many BAD hurricanes Jamaica had?
    ….how many coups Trinidad had?
…how many political brass bowls Guyana had?
…how many Katrina’s, tornadoes, hurricanes, wars, 911’s etc the USA had….?
…and you talking bout Rihanna’s shitty concert?
You think BBE ain’t got nuttin to do or Wuh?

…and like Bushie’s son, you have NO IDEA how lucky and BLESSED you have been…..

May God be with you as we face REALITY……

  35. “arrest spending ” nice play on words,,, but how can the arrest be implemented when the bills have become due and there is no way to pay expect to beg steal or borrow, how can the arrest spending be implemented when the house is in dire need of repair and falling to the ground. how can arrest spending be done ,, when those previuosly in charge of the house failed in their duties to effortlesy put first things first.. what do YOU expect now to let the house go under six feet in an effort to arrest spending . the REALITY it does not happen that WAY. AS YOU david always reminds us tha GOVT is a Continumin and what is handed over be it good or bad new govt has to work with in a forward and progressive move . as in this case an ecomony built on steriods has now deflated and the only arrest to be done necessary in order to stop bleeding would be harsh and devastating methods which the house could not withstand which will splinter and break the social rafters of an enviroment creating havoc and social upheaveal..

  36. @ac

In case you are unable to understand here it is in plain English. We are not discussing debt servicing, we are talking transfers and subsidies, increasing imports, increasing public service employees, accommodating the pork as the Americans call it, traveling the world first class with wives and partners etc.

SOME ARE MERE DUMMIES BUT SOME ARE THE DEVIL INCARNATE. SOME OF THE DUMMIES IN BIM AND ELSEWHERE ARE INDWELT BY SATAN HIMSELF. ABOUT THAT THERE IS NO DOUBT.

She is a lying jackass David, what need is there for work permits at this stage when the hotel is about 2 and half years away from opening, these people like Mottley should realize that she is speaking to intelligent people and not her party faithful.

  44. Well this is the questioned she asked.

  45. call it what ever u want inorder for an economy to function sucessfully it must be runnung on all four cylinders , i notice u mention subsidies ask adrien how many subsidies he would like taken away from the hotel industry he gets up on BU crrying about how poor the hoteliers are, tell that part to ADREIN who says govt neva do enuff, not ac…. i have a household to take care i plan for good as well as bad .dont wait till the sh,,t hit the fan to borrow beg or steal or deny the most and basic areas of my home in order to survive, the fact is that when this economy was bountiful someone or someones refutse to plan for a future but prefer to look the other way and planted all them eggs in one basket, that is how ac sees it and not gonna change ,ac head is hard ! stubborn and not easy to crack , ,

  46. Again you show your one sidedness. Do you know that tourism in responsible for over 60% of the output in our economy? Why do you think the government is rushing to pay a mint for Almond Village to open it for a year before they knock if down fir Burch? Despite what you say government cannot afford to not subsidize the tourist industry. It is all we got right now.

David coupled with that thinking is that the island needs the hotel room stock or eventually airlines will reduce incoming services purely because we have too few rooms to sustain the airlift we presently have.
I personally am happy to see Sandals in our market each one of the new entities provides a new and different level of marketing out of their own marketing budget and none are dependent on the BTA to give them exposure in the various markets they market their product for themselves with tremendous success and thereby open opportunities for ones like Loveridge who does nothing to help himself but he rather whines and stands cap in hand waiting for govt grants.

  48. O<K DAVID you made my point crystal clear that an economy in order to be robust must be running on all four cyclinders to survive, However the question should be asked , again for the one hundreth millioneth time how and where does govt "arrest spending" without cutting vital organs, that affect the society as a whole.. take the UWI.. govt ask for society to lend a helping hand rather than cut services and the outrage was enough to break the sound barrier moving faster than speed of light, the reality and challenges of handling a country econcomy and peoples needs vs debt are not as simple as "arrest spending"

  49. Adrian does not get handouts, the problem is that neither political parties will support an Adrian because in 2007CWC he took on the BLP and Barney Lynch singlehanded and the same post 2008 he has taken on the DLP. He calls it as he sees it which is why party faithfuls will never agree with him.
