Dr. David Estwick, a key performer on the campaign platform
Dr. David Estwick, a key performer on the campaign platform

Although it might seem that I have been given the bad end of the stick it is my belief that I have been chosen by the Almighty, and my constituents of St Phillip West to work on behalf of this country.  My mother always said: time longer than twine and that the race is not for the swift but is for he that endureth.

Nation Newspaper (01/10/2010)

Despite a can-do attitude and an unmatched passion for politics the first term of the DLP administration was not been particularly kind or favourable to Dr.David Estwick. First there was the allegation of brandishing a firearm in the precincts of Parliament and then there was the public spat with a dying David Thompson ending with the now infamous Bajan quote ‘time longer than twine’.

Dr. Estwick who is affectionately known in the political arena as The Pitbull, undertook responsibility for crafting the economic message and arguments for the DLP campaign and also for analyzing the policies and personality of Owen Arthur and for the vicious attacks that resulted there from. Some will argue that it was the combined efforts of Dr. Estwick and Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart that ultimately destroyed the mystique and somewhat favourable memory of Owen Arthur as a leader capable of delivering prosperous times. The combined effort prove too fatal to Owen Arthur’s bid to regain the leadership of Barbados and the experience will serve these two well in 2018 when it is likely that they will be facing the more formidable challenger in Mia Mottley.

In addition, no other DLP candidate in the 2013 elections can match his 554 increase in votes nor his whopping 17 per cent increase over the 2008 vote tally. Not even the much acclaimed Chris Sinckler can match Dr. Estwick’s results in 2013 but that is not to undermine Mr. Sinckler’s performance in St. Michael North West but just to make sure the facts are not distorted, as is the want when it comes to Dr. Estwick.

In the 2003 elections Dr. Estwick secured 2714 votes, in the 2008 election he secured 2648 and in 2013 a massive 3, 720 votes. In each case defeating the same candidate in Lynette Eastmond.

The 2013 win for the DLP was delivered predominantly on the sharp intellects of Dr. Estwick and the Prime Minister and on the hard work of others like George Pilgrim, Donville Inniss, Ronald Jones and many others.

Clear the skies, the Pheonix has risen and is about to soar.

  2. i listened to Dr. Estwick’s presentation which unmasked thelies that were perpetuated by owen handlers, about the unemploymenr rate being 25 per cent when the blp took over in 1994, among other things.

  3. 2018……would be an amazing feat for this government to survive 5 years. Not saying impossible…but incredibly difficult.

  4. Based on Estwick’s presentations the government appears to have a descent mid to long term development plan. The challenge is now.

  5. Ok So what, is Stuart bound to appoint him deputy PM?

The fact that you have reached that conclusion suggest its a fear of yours. The writers seems to have concentrated on facts.

If he is rewarded one way or the other, then surely that would based on merit and effort.

  7. Call me a snob but I cannot understand how anyone can vote for this man. Affectionately called pitbull, what? He has been deemed a pitbull because of his aggressive nasty in your face behaviour. Carry fight to Owen, my backside, a man who was never schooled in economics, give me a break. I will grant it to him that he is a good doctor but he is an economic buffoon!

We will wait to see the composition of the new cabinet and see what will happen to this DLP. Me thinks, the real fun is about to start!

    “formidable challenger in Mia Mottley.”

There is nothing “formidable” about Mia, she was deliberately spared this time around, she wont escape the next time around, trust me.

  9. @Prodigal Son

If not Estwick who for MoF?

  10. David Estwick is a strong outspoken man who has an excellent intellect, and is unmatched in the DLP. Unfortunately, these have never been the credentials for a deputy PM in Barbados. Since 1966, Prime Ministers have always chosen meek mild mannered or weak individuals who were no match and could not possibly mount a successful challenge to the PM’s leadership. It is unlikely that Estwick would become DPM but he is the ideal candidate to be appointed Minister of Finance. Unlike the last MoF, he would be able to understand financial statements and would not have to wait to have them explained to him.

  11. Carson

Don’t waste your time: no one is listening when anyone points out that the only thing that Mia has going for her is her deep masculine voice. So far she has held a number of ministries and all have under-performed while she was at the helm. She almost destroyed the Ministry of Education.

We have a number of people like Wickham who are constantly pushing her in our faces because they somehow believe that she would pass gay rights legislation if she is PM. Additionally, the Dems keep telling the country that they prefer her as their opponent. You ever wondered why?

  12. We are being led by the MOST UNPOPULAR Prime Minister ever in the history of Barbados. No wonder the people willing to sell their votes.

Barbados is a good country with good people afflicted with an unpopular government.

We could as well go back to the canefields and nurse on Freundel’s nipples!

  13. FED UP

There was a man called Earskine Sandiford …. how easily you forget ….!

  14. But then he was followed by a man called Owen Arthur … My Gad

  15. Cabinet is supposed to be announced this week.

  16. Fed up

People did not sell their votes because Freundel is unpopular. They sold their votes because we have the biggest set of corrupt politicians ever who were willing to pay. They spend tens of thousands because they know when they are elected they can steal many times more. They do so in the full knowledge that they would not suffer any adverse consequences if they are caught because the independent regulators and law enforcement agencies are anything but independent.

  17. As will the Leader of the opposition and the shadow cabinet.

    Caswell

Your reasoning re Estwick seems reasonable. So then it will have to be Sealy or Carrington for Deputy PM and Estwick for Minister of Finance but what of Sickler?

We now know that the $10 M in life support was passed back to three parties, each getting $3.333 M. We need to know if the owner of a ‘bald pouch cat’ was one.

  19. What is this fixation about naming a Deputy PM? I even read an Editorial about it as Bajans seem to be curious as to who will be anointed. In many countries the PM names someone as Deputy who has no aspirations to the top job as he doesn’t want to give anyone an unfair advantage over any other contender. The naming of a Deputy has now become the naming of a successor why should a PM by virtue of his Office be entitled to appoint his successor?

Owen Arthur to his chagrin has seen what naming a deputy has done, Stuart should continue the practice of choosing a different individual from cabinet to act in his stead when he is away, if he is unable to perform his duties the cream will rise to the top.

  20. My advice to you PM, continue to rotate persons for the PM postion.

Caswell, u said Mia almost destroyed the MOE, i think u should have removed the word almost from in front of destroyed.

  21. Rendered Assistance

A deputy is not essential. As a matter of fact, the Constitution does not speak to a deputy. It is a gift from the PM in order to give one of his ministers more pay. A deputy does not automatically become PM when there is a vacancy. The parliamentary group still has to meet and select a leader.

This is just a reminder to someone that they need to wake him soon as he needs to choose his cabinet.

  24. A deputy is essential. doubt muh?

Wunna fellas need to lighten up. Elections done and I still drinking scotch of a reasonable vintage.

  25. why hasnt any of the dlp detractors commented on Eswick’s presentation, which i believe influence the undecided voters to break for the dlp. it was a masterful presntaton, whcih makes economic matters look simple.

Yes, the accrural concept showed us the true debt. owen is one of rhe most deceptive person i have known, he does not see barbados as a society, but an economy, No wonder we have developed such conspicuous consumption patters which we caant afford,

  26. I like Caswell, and btw Amused too, part of a New Years approach to healthy living … I just wish in the foreseeable future that Cas would modify his homophobic demeanor …!

  27. TO THE POINT

BTW I am hoping that you realize the major difference between the present type of mass meetings and those of long ago; it is that the presenters now preach to their converted. I spent a few minutes at the meeting at Wanstead, after all the noise kept people awake for miles around. It was a sea of blue and yellow shirts. I felt so different and uninvited in my Black shirt that I felt obliged to leave early and suffer the commotion in silence.

  28. CLOSE TO 15 000 people passed through Agrofest today, and long lines were still at the ticket booth late in the evening.

The annual agricultural showcase wrapped up at Queen’s Park with locals and visitors taking the opportunity to view and purchase items on sale ranging from fish and birds to fruits, vegetables, produce and a variety of bi-products from locally grown supplies.

    FOOD SECURITY is the future.

  29. @BAF

i have a lot of respect for caswell as well, but sometimes he needs to be more open to logical criticism. Wait where is amused, i forget him,

Yes in most cases, he parties are speaking to the converted, but the undecided voters aslo go to meetings to listen to and decide what is facts from fiction..

  30. From reading this submission with a discerning eye it is evident there is a strong expectation from Estwick’s supporters.

  31. one wait to see if he will play ball and how he will play it along with Chris and Donville

  32. It will be interesting to watch, it’s just a rumor and i can’t remember which candidate went to garrison school, but it is said that one who went to harrison college and considers himself superior (while being arrogant) claims he will not be led by someone who went to garrison school. If true, do you get more stupid than that??? On another note, people who live in depressed areas throughout the caribbean are well known for being staunch party supporters, even if their economic conditions never change for the better. Voters in the Bush Hall area are well known for their staunch and blind belief in the mottley clan, this has been handed down from generation to generation from the days of the corned beef, biscuit and rum vote buying, perpetrated and encourage by politicians for decades who like seeing people beg them, this makes them feel powerful to those who do not know any better and could care less.. The general belief is that votes are owed to particular candidates forever because of a letter written by the representative to obtain a little job, preferable government job, with a pension attached, candidates then see this as an entitlement and act accordingly each and every election. The stakes have now been raised, although voters still live in depressed areas and conditions have not improved significantly, the voters have all acquired fine tastes and expect to be paid accordingly for their votes.

  33. …………Caswell, u said Mia almost destroyed the MOE, i think u should have removed the word almost from in front of destroyed……………….

And what has Ronald Jones done to the MOE? Moral is at an extreme low, many senior officers have left or have asked to be seconded elsewhere. The whole AX debacle is a testimony of the failure of Ronald Jones. Waste of space!

  34. Another troubling thing, one DLP blogger immediately called for barbados Scholarship Winners to be kept (academically imprisoned) in Bim if they are not doing a discipline that can be done at UWI, problem with that Bim does not have the academic capabilities required to educate people for this new world order. The lame excuse is foreign exchange, however the government spends over $700,000,000 million a year in importing food than can be grown in Bim. Do these asses ever listen to themselves. This blogger will be the first to cry when there is a massive brain drain to TRINIDAD. Now we know what happened with the caveat that forced most Exhibition Winners to be stuck in Bim in 2010, appears DLP supporters were instrumental in keeping the brightest minds in Bim (academically imprisoned, with the idiot Ronald Jones leading the charge for his own personal and academically challenged reasons. What a disaster.

  35. All of this knowing full well that they are unable to pay over $200,000,000 to UWI to keep the campus operational. There is a saying, be careful for what you ask, you just might get it.

  36. The DLP is bigger than Estwick. And he was never ‘in the ashes’ to begin with.

@FED UP, get over it. Owen lost to the ‘unpopular’ Stuart. Nuff Said.

  37. Kevin

You are right, the DLP is bigger that Dr. Estwick but is also true that the DLP is bigger because of Dr. Estwick. He was in the political ashes when David Thompson was alive. Talent is cork, no matter how many times you try to sink it it keep rising again and again and again.

  38. @ David

    Estwick’s supporters?

  39. @Mark

The slant of the submission suggest the person is an Estwick supporter, just a guess though.

  40. @ David

Can facts be slanted? Can you Fact Check it for the benefit of the readers?

  41. Well Well

You work over and away. Now why should I a Barbadian, be a witness to valuable foreign exchange being used as a reward for these scholarship winners so that some many of them could join you, and those that don,t could return and feed on the Barbadian consumer …?

  42. BAF, has it ever occurred to you that some if not most of these scholarship and exhibition winners will return to contribute. Given that a lot have tried over the years and were soundly mistreated, we also have to take into consideration that there are not enough jobs and positions available for scholars to contribute anything in Bim i personally know of lawyers and doctors now in Barbados who cannot find jobs and have to emigrate anyway. My point continues to be, Trinidad sends 40% of their brightest minds out to study, Trinidad now owns Barbados, around the world, India, China, Japan, USA, Germany, Canada etc, etc, sends their brightest minds around the world to study cause they know that some if not most will contribute even if they do not return, in some for or another t the country of birth. Most people in Bim don’t understand that a countries population is their only true resource, trying to academically imprison scholars on an island that has very little resources, will see that island remaining in the 18th century mode, with politicians continuing their small island corruption indefinitely. How many scholars do you see wanting to enter the nasty swamp of politics in Bim. The last scholar who had anything to do with politicians in Bim was more than happy to die in his sleep and he had just turned 40, I believe.

  43. Let us wish Dr. Estwick all the best. He would have to be very sick to miss the swearing in ceremony of Cabinet.

  44. David; Agreed. Let’s hope, for Barbados’ and Freundel’s sake, that he makes it to Government House tomorrow and gets better quickly.

  45. Caswell; What are the constitutional ramifications of a House of Assembly with 1 speaker; 15 members of the ruling party; 1 Independent and 14 Opposition members?

  46. @Checkit-Out | March 1, 2013 at 7:35 PM |

The more germaine question to Caswell is; What are the ramifications of a labour union incorporated under the name UNITY having only one member amd that member is Caswell?

If Estwick were to separate himself from the DLP it would create a crisis situation but in the process he would condemn himself to the political wasteland.

There are so many permutations since Friday February 22nd.Is it not going to subside and settle? Is Estwick with them?I hope he gets good advice again.Upon the last occasion harl hite pleaded with ’em to steer steady. What will he advise today and tomorrow? Is it 16/14 or 15/15 again this time be out de wood factor.Somehow I think bajans would be more comfortable with Estwick as MOF&EA.His credibility is a known. Can’t say that for others because of the downgrades, the loss of jobs, the deficit spending, the bloated public sector, the raid and rape of my pension funds, the failure of promised projects to start.

    ———

Sometimes a person has to stand up for what is right. Ys or no? If in so doing he ‘condemns himself’, what does that say, that he is sacrifycing his political career for what he believes?

That said, he should not worry, he will have the two terms in Parliament for his Parliamentary pension when this one is done,, or is this his third?

Does he actually need the others as they need him? I think not.

The prospects for the Government does not look good if Freundel and David do not kiss and make up. If Estwick crosses the floor to join the Opposition or to sit as an independent, Government would be unable to get its agenda through Parliament. There would be 15 MPs who are opposed to the Government and they would be able to out vote the Government’s 14 voting members since Mr. Speaker does not vote unless there is a tie. If the Government is defeated in Parliament, it would be obliged to resign. The best thing to do is to offer the job of Speaker to the Opposition.
