RIP Nicole Harrison-Watson

The death of 37 year old Nicole Harrison-Watson remains top of the mind for many Barbadians a couple days after she was found murdered at her Ferniehurst, Black Rock, St Michael home. While it does no good to speculate about what motivated her assailant (a suspect is being questioned by Police), it affords the living the opportunity to critically and dispassionately analyse the poor conditions which many Barbadians live under in Barbados and in particular our young women.

BU subscribes to the view that a woman with her unique nurturing quality was created to complement a man. When the two – man and woman – function in harmony, they are able to optimize on their mental, physical, and emotional state. The result is that the society we cohabit becomes a good place in which we can live quality lifes. The challenge of the government, NGOs and civil society at large is how do we manage to achieve the societal equilibrium required with all the competing ideologies at play.

Without fuelling the puerile debate about building a society instead of an economy, how can we pontificate about the success of the Barbados society, if according to the most recentย  Barbados Country Assessment of Living Conditions Report (CALC)ย  โ€œpersons living below the poverty line in Barbados has double, since the last study on living conditions and poverty was undertaken over a decade agoโ€? Pertinent in the report is that 19.3% of Barbadian individuals in 15% ofย  households earn income below the poverty line – 9.1% of individuals 7% of households were living below the indigence line at the time the survey was carried out. An easy conclusion to make, anecdotally though it is, these numbers with the prevailing economic hardships must be trending upward.

A significantย  percentage of individuals and households operating below the poverty line are located in government housing developments โ€“ Deacons, Pine, Silver Hill, St Matthias and other clusters known for low income habitation. Of interest to BU is that a significant of number of individuals operating below the poverty line are women and on p.110 of the report 38% recorded no level of examination passed. One does not have to be a rocket scientist to understand what this current state will breed.

The bigger point is that there is bound to be a positive correlation in the lack of social cohesion and crime in many of these depressed neighbourhoods like Deacons and the Pine and the declining economic condition. It is no secret that Deacon is overridden with drug lords whose stranglehold on the women especially is born out of the over crowding, lack of opportunity, under employment, hunger, lack of education voluminously articulated in the (CALC). How many women existing below the poverty line are abused, rape, beaten because of the infestation of a drug culture in these developments which makes those with money (usually men) the โ€˜bankersโ€™ in community?

In a negative environment accepting the findings in the CALC report what happens to families if the women are victims? Without the woman how will the family survive? Of course some will get a lifeline but many will be sucked into a black hole of poverty and their generations to follow. We have to do better to protect our women to enable them to fulfil their nurturing role. No society can deem to have progressed if we are not protecting our womenfolk, if we are losing our womenfolk.

Barbadians one and all have to agitate to ensure the authorities mobilize an action plan to fight back against the scourge of poverty wrecking havoc on 19.3% of Barbadians (which equates to about 58,000 people) across Barbados. Of importance, let us protect our womenfolk,

  1. It is not just to do with drug lords and poor areas of Barbados. It is to do with mentality. It is deemed acceptable to beat a woman in Barbados and correct more should be done to protect women in Barbados from physical abuse which now is extending to women losing their lives. The Police too should be made to take a more serious view and attend victims promptly instead of taking a view that it is not important or she probably deserved a beating. I spoke once with a Policeman in Barbados on this subject and he informed me women do not hardly report this abuse to the Police as not much is done and they fear for their lives after reporting it because nothing is done to prevent the man from going near the women and continuing to abuse her or even kill her. Harsher sanctions are needed, Injunctions with powers of arrest attached to them, records similar to that as child abuses should be implemented, jail terms. The message that needs to be sent to the men and also women because there are some women physically abusing men albeit not as much as the men is that this sort of abuse will not be tolerated and severe consequences will follow. Women are losing their lives because it is deemed okay to beat and abuse a women because they are looked upon as inferior to the man. It is abuse! Is this how Barbados want to be classified as a country that allows women to be beaten and killed. Fix up Barbados, it is not looking good.

  2. it does not matter how much money is thrown into social programs it takes continual educational programs for those who have fallen through the cracks and money and the a desire and willigness of a nation to go the long haul in hepling to reduce poverty,

  3. Poverty will al;ways be with us, but successive governments have not been doing enough to lessen or raise the level of poverty in this country. The urge to keep up with the “jones” also cause poor people to steal, shoot, and murder to get what they want. Unfortunately, our police force is not adequate to handle this situation, we need trained police officers to deal strictly with this and domestic quarrells/ fights. As a former student of that university on the hill C.P. I’m in sympathy, with her family, school friends and other friends as well as her work colleuges. Enough is enough, time that we take these matters more seriously

  4. In the same way some have been prepared to place the judiciary under the microscope the same needs to be done to government agencies like URBAN and RURAL. and the ministry responsible. It appears these agencies/ministry are not getting the job done.

It is amazing how some BIG hypocrites in here who have posted and will post here on BU have previously condemned women and have blamed women for all the ills of society. Some have stated that their wives know their places and that since women have gone into the teaching service have made the male teachers leave and that has contributed to delinquency of children. Some have gone even further to say that because women have gone into the workplace that has also contributed to the lawlessness of the youth.

There is a deep seated dislike bordering on hatred of women in this society. Women are still treated as chattel and must have a master to lead them. Women make up around 52% of our population yet we have not penetrated politically enough to one day elect a leader.

Women have been systematically brainwashed by the church that they are the weaker sex and must have a man in charge of her morality and reproduction. Men have been also brainwashed that he is the master of women and that he is responsible for a woman’s morality and fertility.

Mothers MUST instill in their sons that women are human beings and must be treated with respect and that they are not chattel. Mothers MUST instill in their daughters that they are not chattel to be bought and sold to the highest bidder.

Women must STOP waiting for men to validate who they are and their worth. We must teach our girl children and our boy children that violence will lead to more violence and must put a stop to it when it rears its ugly head. WALK away and save your life and someone else’s.

The authorities MUST take violence against women and Domestic violence very SERIOUSLY. This includes violence toward men as well.

Women MUST be responsible for their reproductive cycle. Unprotected sex leads to unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. Men MUST understand that when a woman says NO it is NO!

David Thompson was on the right track with those now so much repeated statement of a an economy and society being as one as cliche as it may sounds one cannot progress without the other for therin lies the heart of all societies problems and no matter how some segements of a society tries to ignore these social pitfallfs there are not going away what really is neceesary is a comprehensive education of the public in general And the truthfulness on how we all address and confront these problems

AC David Thompson DEAD AND GONE he did NOTHING in his short tenure as PM of Barbados except raise the cost of living. Why don’t you stop trying to resurrect the dead and deal with the living? Happy May 1st to you!

  11. This issue is really a serious one and could lead at the rate it is moving – double in the last 10 years according to CALC – in an environment which will fuel greater decline. We all can paint a picture of the problems that we know well. If we want to see where we are heading think garrison community a la Tivoli in Jamaica. An interesting stat in the report is that in the households below the poverty line 93% own TVs and 83% cellphones define as assets in the survey. Not saying there should not be entertainment but there is a mentality as a previous commenter referred which speaks to an overwhelming problem. We need to unleash forces within these communities to nurture and be punitive to slow the rot now.

  12. Island girl so what is your point or i am to conclude that if any thing said of value that is meant to have an overreaching effect in any society it therfore should be ignored or dismissed because the person is dead .if that is/so we should banned all historical writings and artifacts from those persons who are long dead where there is/truth there is value and relevancy andfrom these things we must learn and not set ourselves up for failure because of our stubborness and know it allattitude

  13. Observing (and relaxing) Avatar
    Observing (and relaxing)

Interesting blog. Raises more questions than answers and requests a solution that is too complex for a one sentence answer. David you are right about the mentality part of it. many of us are still very much mentally enslaved, some knowingly and some unknowingly. Often times purposely so by the political, financial and religious status quo.

Poverty shouldn’t only be counted in terms of “wealth” but also in terms of spirit and values. Therein lies the negative impact on the overall society. When selfishness, greed and corruption are the order of the day at the top and bottom levels of the society, the country becomes unwilling victim. Until the powers that be (policy makers and THE people) decide to do something visible, tangible and continual to at least send a CLEAR message that this is something we want to do something about and these are the things that we WILL not stand for, we’ll continue to spin in mud and watch as our girl children become women with no hope or spirit and our boys (maybe) become men with no sense of responsibility to others and country.

It is not the job of a Prime Minister nor ministry, it;s the job of the right thinking responsible people who desire better to start to seek better and do better where ever better can be done.

  14. n the same way some have been prepared to place the judiciary under the microscope the same needs to be done to government agencies like URBAN and RURAL. and the ministry responsible. It appears these agencies/ministry are not getting the job done.

What do you expect when in the name politics and PR a government rids these agencies of most of the key staff members?

I believe some of your remarks are directed to me, if you have a problem with the relationship between my wife and I, I do sympathise with you, but we trust each other and enjoy each other’s company for well over 40 years.there is room for both genders but some of you seem to be bent on pulling down men, I guess a man was/is your father. a man has no right hitting a woman, in fact any man that hits a woman , in my book, is a weak person. However, women today are beating men, not only physically, but verbally, and mentally; this makes them feel like they are superior. As far as I’m concern, any person who tries to degrade another just to elevate themself is most uncomfortable with themselves, Sorry but you fit PERFECTLY into that catagory.

  16. According to media report the estranged husband was arrested today.

  17. not to forget absentee fathers who for one reason or another have neglected their resopnsiblities in the rearing and caring of their children leaving this totally up to single mothers who must survive on a week to week paycheck this also is a major contributing factor in the decline of poverty, men must step up to the plate and stop playing the blame game and lead by example. too many fatherless children helps to contribute to the breakdown of our moral fabric of our society. men knows the drill it is time to stop using woman as an excuse to avoid your responsibilty

  18. @ac

If you are familiar with the Barbados society from the time of the village you should be aware that it was the woman who was the glue that kept the family unit together. The men were mostly to be found in the rumshop or at another ‘house’. This is not to excuse the role of men of course.

It was only a matter of time before you like IslGal mount the white horse GENERALIZING….placing all men in one category.Well i got news for you sweet heart..don’t let me start to tell you about what some of the women doing nowadays…. all sorta sordid and unscrupulous things to themselves (infidelity) and men. When last you see two men fighting ?……when last you see women fighting …Friday..Don’t mount …women nowadays ( not all)..vicious as hell and even more promiscuous than some men..I could go on and on about some of the things we in here hear and know..but for what, the above video clips said it all…in both cases the male in the end got the shitty end of the stick..which from what was (limited) portrayed .. and was unjustly unfaired…so lid it gf

  20. David but my thrust is not how we started but where we are going and the impact that absentee fathers leave on a society for generations to come . this too is generational as so aptly pointed out in your response as we are now seeing the devastating paths which were left behind by those fathers who had spent more time in “rum shops than doing their fatherly duties in t turn what we have now are sons who have adapted an attitude of total abandonment of their children

  21. @ac

Maybe you are correct, it is a perplexing issue and needs a multifaceted approach.

  22. @ Onions!

  24. yuh see what i mean! you are a perfect example of a gentleman. thats what women like maybe Bush tea can take a chapter a verse or two out of your book instead of rehashing Proverbs.
Anyhow the women that you spoke of in your comment are suffering from very low esteem and in need of wanted attention and usually their audience which is mostly made up of men who reward them with empty promises to no where. THese women need to be educated in finding a way forward to a meaningful future and the men should stop patronising them but we know that will never happen

  25. this is an interesting debate and i wish more men would contribute because they have their side too!

  26. I’m seeing very often especially on morning and afternoon, fathers taking their you children to and from school or nursery. I know of many fathers who raised his children, both boys and girls, on his own. It is time women stop trying to behave as victims to all men. Yes, we hear of more man to woman beatings, but there are much woman to man beating too, just that men don’t shout and scream like the women. In a nutshell, neither gender made the other, so neither should be trying to dominate the sexes; they both have their individual roles to perform

  27. @The Scout

To remind you we are discussing a segment of our population who are trapped in a cycle of poverty and the concomitant issues which result.

  28. Yes scout we have all heard the stories which you have mentioned but what we are discussing are the undelying causes of poverty and what role does absentee fathers attributed to it.

What are you saying David …that ac, Scout’s (and mine) inclusion of the current state of relationships between men and women bear no relevance to this thread ? Well I hope not . The topic points to the protection of women and pic of the late Ms.Harrison-Watson (sincere condolences to the bereaved)…..opening the door for our slant of discussion.
Until we can have some understanding between the two….women and men will continue to see each other at different ends of the spectrum. One giving ..the other looking to be given..speaking of financial support. Are you aware that a gentleman raising his own son or daughter is unable to have a child support order issued in the Lower Court…since there is no provision at this level to entertain his request ?. however a female can. Laws need to be changed more in line to what Scout was speaking of….fathers solely looking after their offspring ….a very common occurrence nowadays. Notwithstanding, women are being paid (in some cases)..more than their men…..How times have changed …we must bring to the table all these new variables in any discussion of alleviating poverty in the household.

  30. @Onions

This is about how a cycle of poverty if allowed to take root is likely to affect the social dynamics in Barbados. It is a bigger issue to where you want to take it.

  31. so who is resonsible for the financial care of the child must be a point that laws take literally so that even when the men assumes full time responsibilty of the child the law does not automatically change As a reward for what he is bound by law to do in the first place.. you might call it favouritism for woman however if the man is supposed to be head of household his responsibilty fiancially remains as is wether he has custody of the child or the woman.

Where I want to take it ? Tell me where I want to take it ? 35. However onions surely you cannot overlooked the fact that sigle households shoulder in part by mothers is a real cause of concerns and in part a cause of poverty and most of the blame should be put squarely on THOSE FATHERS who neglect their parental duties which also becomes a burden for govt and taxpayers to resolve. Now how can one overlook such a factor as to one of the real causes leading to poverty a single income household is doomed to financial failure which plunges that household into poverty.

  36. islandgal246 Avatar

  38. The ratio to women as head of household is astronomical when compared to men and the cases brought against men who neglect child support are much greater than thosebrought against women. the govt is now tring to give some financial relief to women because of men failure to support their children even when the court demands them to do so.

  39. @Onions

    Go and fight with yourself.

  40. To reiterate the CALC – scientific analysis – has revealed an escalating level of poverty in our ‘slum’ districts. BU again posits that our womenfolk have been made very vulnerable in prevailing environment. Women are raped, beaten and otherwise victimized because of their dependence on men for their survival. The problem is dominant if compared to men in the same dataset. They suffer this mostly in silence. It is a problem we need to fix given the importance of a woman in the family matrix. It is not to say that men are not affected. The analysis is there and generalization is not going to help.

Look that may apply to some cases…my point… NOT ALL…today is a different day (read Scout)….I have been in the Court yard and lucky enough to see a “impoverish” mother ..dawned her expensive treads and place them in her SUV….proceeded to put on tattered rags..scruff up the braids..finally looking like the epithet she wanted to portray, before going before Magistrate Benn….With tears in eyes, she proceeded to relate, how the money ain’t enough ..how she getting unfaired…by a father who came by bus. Benn revised the Order with threats of imprisonment for non payment…TRUE as I here this morning…The sweet part was ..on getting the revised order..she proceeded to inform …us in the Court Yard ..that she now on the way to St .Mathias court …for a repeat
