Leader of the Opposition, Owen Arthur, Mia Mottley, Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart

Rarely have I hesitated so much over a heading as I did over this one.ย  I first thought of Arthur, Stuart and Mottley.ย  What difference would that have made?ย  I hear you ask, since it separates Arthur and Stuart from Mottley with the simple “and” which would have served the purpose.ย  However, I wanted to place them on an equal footing, so there it is Arthur, Mottley, Stuart in alphabetical order.

Since this turn of mind has taken me, I will anticipate a few questions before they are asked.ย  Stuart and Arthur have both held the office of Prime Minister of Barbados, Mottley has not, how can their leadership abilities be compared.ย  Note I am discussing leadership qualities, because Mottley has not held the office of Prime Minister of Barbados does not mean she has not got the qualities to be a good leader and perhaps even Prime Minister.ย  Some will contest this statement that is their right.

Yardbroom, why have you chosen two from the BLP and only one from the DLP.ย  If Chris Sinkcler springs to mind, I believe in recent months his star has waned.ย  He is in political terms a relatively young man, he can consolidate, retrench and return to the first rank a wiser and much stronger man, he is not in the wilderness yet.

Thirdly if you expect this submission to be a rant against Arthur, Mottley or Stuart concentrating on rumoured infelicities or salacious gossip scroll down quickly, it is not going to happen.

Owen Arthur The Master Tactician has not played all his cards yet.ย  The longer the lapse between now and when Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart calls the election date, gives him time to manoeuvre his pieces into position.ย  It would be unwise to think Arthur has not got a strategy up his sleeve, he will only act decisively when “his” troops are in position.ย  He, like most intelligent generals knows that his power and influence comes from the dependability of those who are behind him.ย  He will not leave himself open to ambush.ย  What we have been witnessing for the past months is “strategic positioning”.ย  It is not enough to be in my encampment he asserts.ย  I must see the colours nailed to your mast.

You might vehemently disagree with his modus operandi or even his ethics but Arthur is a results man.ย  It is the end product that matters.ย  He is at his best when he is cornered, you underrate him at your peril.

Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart was able to bring a sanity of sorts to the Alexandra School dispute, astute leadership skills got results, the school is functioning.ย  I will not dwell on the minute details here, the Alexandra School topic has been more than adequately dealt with on other submissions.

The brouhaha over the supposed “gang of eleven” has abated.ย  I will not give it fresh legs here but only ask, would it have been better to dismiss Ministers in the last year of Parliament to prove how “strong” you are?ย ย  even if that action is to the disadvantage of the DLP and more importantly Barbados?ย  Is that strong leadership and does it prove you are a leader of worth?ย  Are we a people who cannot discern astute leadership skills.ย  Are we so devoid of that cognitive process that allows us to separate thinkers from shouters.ย  Must we be forever prey, to be preyed upon, who cannot see worth?ย  We will lose a lot and gain so little, if we dismiss those of true worth because we cannot hear from them empty shouts,ย  like that from mouths that have failed us before and have left us bystanders in our land, as our fate is decided by others.

Mia Mottley is likeย  daffodil bulbs in spring, she will always return when light showers caress those bulbs that shoot into life.ย  She will not go away.ย  She is as strong as the earth that produced her; resilient as the seasons that unfailingly come.ย  She is as appealing to her followers as those wondrous yellow flowers are to the eye.ย  Many felt she was dealt a bad hand but politics is not about fairness.ย  An intelligent politician as she is knows she can bide her time.ย  Her strength lies in her popular appeal and cross party popularity aligned with a national recognition factor.

Some here (BU) have often tried to play the female card in her favour, it does not pay dividends in National politics.ย  There have been many female leaders in politics but they do not play the “female card” it does not work.

There is no doubt Mia Mottley will lead the BLP again.ย  I hear some voices scoffing in the background to that statement.ย  However, I must remind you I also wrote Owen Arthur would return to contest the leadership of the BLP a long time ago when Mia Mottley was leader of the BLP.ย  When others were saying he was old and finished.ย  I am sorry but I call it the way I see it, the truth always wins out.

The time between now and when Prime Minister Stuart calls the election date, will be interestingย  times in Barbados politics.ย  There is much to gain but there will be many losers.ย  The victors in the next general election can possibly set out a framework for what we will become as a Nation.ย  It will be one of the most important elections in recent decades, there is a lot at stake.ย  Barbadians should be astute, a lot will depend on their choice.

  1. Are you Rip Van Winkle ? Were you asleep? .Then wake up. On this blog there is a contest between the leaders Frenduel and Owen. To introduce Mia as your leader is OK but this is not now the point. So get thee behind me Yardbrooom. We are not talking about leadership in the future . We are discussing leaders now. Unless Mia is coming with a third party this she does not count in the slightest. I think you are doing a dissetvice to your choice.. Every person in politics should believe he /she has some leadership potential. Thin on these things

  2. Yardbroom
You seems to be like ac …drunken some magic potion and not thinking right. We just had over 145 comments on the posting :”Which Direction is the Political Wind Blowing”: also a foo foo poll. RESULTS KNOWN. We assume that you are still able to go in the archives (in case you missed it) and preview the outcome of 4 days discussions by bloggers like true to form, myself, .ac and the like.Yet still you carry us in the same direction for comments.Lame..very lame.Exactly what would you have us re-discuss on this posting that we have not already on the last…who is a better leader and who is not ? Have you ever heard of over kill ?

  3. “Is that strong leadership and does it prove you are a leader of worth?”

Is no actin in this case better than some sort of action? Given the reason for the letter in the first place??

  4. Can’t believe that the Bushman is forced to agree with Old Onions….

Bushie won’t easily forgive Yardbroom for causing such a conundrum…..

  5. The position put by Peter Wickham that the DLP has failed to put a clear position in the public domain which compares Barbados current economic plight to other countries given the harsh economic reality is a valid one. The BLP has been allowed to get away with the comparison up to to now by comparing to times of plenty. A clear strategy failure and one can cite a flawed leadership.

  6. Peter Wickham has said it correctly ! which should only be telling! i do so agree again with him . The BLP is flying under the rader using slight of hand by not getting vocally involved with discussing the How they are going to RESTORE! BUILD! RESTRUCTURE! only using code words that seem platable to the guillible . Voodoo politics if you asked me but time would tell how long the public would go for it.

  7. Unless the EAGER 11 act NOW, the DLP would lose the next elections badly. FS is playing the childish ancient game with the voters, why can’t he face the public and deal with matters. The last time F S had a news conference, he failed badly by showing his bias for a particular group. It is O.K to be bias but to be so blatant about it and boosting about the results shows the inability to face a problem head on. Can F.S go out and assist the weaker candidates when the general elections are called?

  8. ac
The BLp under Arthur, has a record, remember when they came to power, this country was facing a crisis, there was a salary cut, a threat of the dollar devaluation, massive unemployment. Immediately, the BLP came to power, salaries were restored, unemployment started to improve, people were seeing better times. This was why on the second term the margin of victory was so large;that is a good record. Given he was assisted by the arrogance of Sandiford not to step down, what happened in the first two terms of the BLP regime is good history; true he failed badly in his third term. F S and the DLP has failed badly in their first term in office, therefore when you examine the two leaders Arthur is (as shown) way above F S, hence the BLP is way above the DLP. The only way the DLP can salvage some pride is if F S steps down from office. Please remember, the likely person to replace him has just declared he is not interested in becoming P.M

  9. @The Scout

Your analysis is devoid of a contextual basis. Both Sandiford and not Stuart had to do battle in a global economy which was/is struggling. The reality is that people will remember the good times and this is the point being made. How can the DLP show the people that by trying to keep civil servants employed, meet the obligation to keep our social services going it ha placed a strain on the public purse? So far the message has been lost in the petty political bickering etc.

  10. David
How long did it take the BLP to get the economy moving again? If I remember correctly civil servants salaries were restored within months. I also recall, Arthur went against the recommendations of the IMF and took a different approach that worked. Yes, we were in a crisis but getting out of it shows the character of the leaders. Like Sandiford, Stuart is willing to follow directions from the IMF, Arthur is willing to try something diiferent. Also I remember the same IMF congratulaing him for the methods used

  11. David
The IMF is like an accountant, they see figures and will show you how to balance the economy reguardless of how many persons suffer because of the measures taken. An economist on the other hand look at how he/she can correct the economy without hurting the people too much.

  12. @SCOUT

I am sick and Tired of hearing about the PAST . Tell me what the BLP is going to do for the economy Now. MY god this is nauseating i am going to take some PEPTO BISMOL! all the criticsm of the DLP is not going to change what is happening in the economy we need the answers for the present and not reminders of a past economy which was not going under the global strains of what is happening Now Save all that talk because that is all the BLP might have going for them and NOT REAL answers to a struggling economy

  13. I understand what Yardbroom is saying, however this is my opinion on Ms Mottley.

I would be very surprised if she ever becomes the leader of the BLP again. The same MPs who are witnessing her throwing childish tantrums are not going to vote for her as a leader. Her behaviour has been a turn off for most BLPites, especially the fact that she has been mingling and has been seen in all DLP settings since she lost the leadership. People therefore do not think that they can trust her.

This idea that the BLP will loose the female vote is not really true, once there is a good man, a woman would prefer to vote for a man rather than a woman. Finally, Bajans are not as liberal as Americans or the British, many are very intolerant of the gay lifestyle.

  14. i also laugh when i hear comments like this:

“The BLP is flying under the rader using slight of hand by not getting vocally involved with discussing the How they are going to RESTORE! BUILD! RESTRUCTURE!”

why should any party in opposition tell a government or a people what they will do outside of an election? if the election was called and they still did not tell the people what their plan was i could agree with you. you have the opposition telling the government they doing it wrong and nothing they do is right. why on earth would you want to hear ideas from those people when you become government?

wanna people to blasted bias. god help our country.

  15. “Now Save all that talk because that is all the BLP might have going for them and NOT REAL answers to a struggling economy”

is this not what happened to the DLP?

  16. @david not (BU)

I laugh too at people who insist on buying a pig in a bag. LOL!

  17. I listen to DLPites everyday still blaming the BLP for every thing wrong in this country. People like CCC disrespect and lambast Owen Arthur every week on this blog and rake up everything dating back to the early 00’s. Tell your fellow Dems stop raking up the past.

The BLP is working on their manifesto and in it will be real development plans and programs that are ACHIEVABLE, no 100 days pie in the sky promises.

The BLP will first restore hope in Barbadians, let them know that they care and that they can be reassured that their hopes and dreams can come true again. The economy will be restructured and then with the confidence of our people restored, this country will be rebuilt. Every time the DLP destroys Barbados, the people turn to the tried and tested BLP to build back this economy. So it will be and the BLP will not fail the good people of this country.

Finally, Bajans are not as liberal as Americans or the British, many are very intolerant of the gay lifestyle.”

Even if they themselves are part of that lifestyle behind closed doors or in the closet. Ain’t no wonder that this country has one of the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS in the World!
Word of advice to people like you, wayward son: So-called She-She men and butch females quarry after “straight” looking men and women. They compete vigorously for the macho men and sexy gals (husbands and wives boyfriends and girlfriends of “heterosexuals”). And don’t you go ascribing any sexual orientation to me! This is just a professionally informed opinion and observation.

  19. sorry ac, no pig, not even a bag.

    sorry.

  20. David (not BU),

In the early days of this administration, during a debate in the House, Mia was offering some advice to the government. Up jumps, Donville Inniss, “wunnah had wunnah time, now is we time and we dont want to hear anything from you”. Mia replied, “you like you are going to be the clown prince of this parliament, go right ahead”. Next Chris Sinckler jump up ” wunnah had 14 years and wunnah cant tell me what to do, now is we time”. All the while David Thompson, smiling in his seat.

I said to myself, these are going to fall hard, they dont know and dont want any advice. So I dont know what ac want the BLP to do. The government does not take criticism kindly nor does it take advice. Do you not hear the private sector complaining that this government does not listen. So ac, the BLP will unveil its manifesto with real plans when the time is right.

Rest assured, the first resignation I think the new PM should ask for is the Governor of the Central Bank. He cannot have a say in the way this economy will go after 2012.

  21. Thanks miller for your advice, but I am as straight as can be, never strayed from my spouse in umpteen years. The AIDS statistics are frightening. I fear for my children who will have to find partners in the future.

  22. @ Prodigal

The time is “NOW:” people would applaud them . What is the BLP afraid of ?

  23. @ac
I am sick and tired of the past your words.
There are people sick and tired of the present. Never be tired of the past for if you do not know your past you will relive it always. Comparions are odiious but they must be made. And the people will remember Arthur when things were bad . The growth of 1994 must be attributed both to Arthur and the Dems. but there was growtth in 2007 and Arthur lost the electon after 13 years of sustained growth.
When people are ready for you you can do no right. . You asked what will the BLP do the restore and rescue. Of ye of little faith what has been done before can be tried again . Arthur has promised to make Barbados sparkle again.. I think the Dems real problem is that they tried to blame others for their errors and they tried to take credit for little. This is a government wth little to brag about, Imagine you are talking about giving chuildren $! a day ease and then punished their parents making them pay $2 dollars a ride and then pay monies for Day camps to known SLP lackeys and we know that is part of the fatted calf. they make people shame. The way forward is to make people happy again . Give back the people their allowances and give people some relief by giving them a raise . Think of these things .

  24. To repeat for the benefit of the DLPites who appear intransigent.

The party to win the next election is the one which energizes their base to get out and vote.

So far the BLP seems to be the party whipping up some excitement.

Think on these things DLPites, to borrow truetoform’s saying.

  25. THE BLP is in a desperate feeding frenzy trying to poison the minds of the DLPites we know the kind of games they are playing. after 14 years they are not going down without a fight a bloodbathe if necessary, However the DLP have the ducks in order and is going to beat them at their own game. THis is going to get nasty! THE PAST VS. THE PRESENT! Show me your hand and what is it worth BLP ! NOTHING!

  26. If I remember correctly, the last year in oposition, the DLP through Mr Thompson, said they had no advice for the BLP, when elections are called they would tell bajans what they are going to do for the country. In fact, they decided they were not coming back in Parliament until general elections are called. AC we realise the DLP are out of ideas and will like for the BLP to make suggestions so that when elections are called they can call these suggestions they own. Sorry that would work, maybe the BLP should do like the DLP and refuse to attend this “poor-rakey” parliament until elections are called. Remember, this happened to the BLP after 14 years, it is now happening to the DLP in just 4 years.

  27. I’ve made this point before, and I’ll make it again, the DLP seems to forget that they are now in the driver’s seat as the government . They are still canvassing and after four years in office still blaming the BLP for everything. I believe some of them are now waking up to the reality, that time has elapse and another general elections is just around the corner.

  28. “The party to win the next election is the one which energizes their base to get out and vote.”
    ***********************
Never a truer word spoken David. I believe that the current state of the two political parties is going to result in a low voter turnout.

As one of those voters that the politicians and the press like to refer to as a floater, I have been struck by the comments of fellow floaters and some BLP and DLP supporters.

There seems to be almost universal dissatisfaction with the Government’s management of the economy, but what should be a slam dunk for the Opposition among us floaters is being marred by the infighting in the BLP. Its like six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Some of my BLP friends who remember what the Party was like before the Arthur years are becoming more and more disenchanted with the resurrection of his dictatorial leadership style and are at the present moment uncertain if and how they will vote. Those who are still upset by his treatment of Mia Mottley have vowed not to vote at all.

My DLP friends on the other hand are embarrassed by the Prime Minister’s leadership style and the clear rumblings of dissatisfaction from his own team. They are still going to vote for their party however.

This set me to thinking about who is likely to win or lose their seat when the bell is rung.

Here are my clear winners in no particular order

    DLP BLP
    Michael Lashley Owen Arthur
    David Estwick Mia Mottley
    Denis Kellman Cynthia Forde
    Mara Thompson Dale Marshall
    Freundel Stuart Edmund Hinckson
    Donville Inniss Wilfred Abrahams
    Ronald Jones Maria Agard
    Chris Sinckler Gline Clarke
    Adrian Brathwaite Trevor Prescod
    Hamilton Lashley George Payne
    Michael Carrington Ronald Toppin
    Stephen Lashley
    James Paul
    John Boyce
    Richard Sealy

Can Todd, Suckoo and Blackett hold on to their seats? The Hutson/Symmonds contest could go either way in my view.

At the end of the day it is seats that count.

What do my fellow bloggers think?

  29. that is why the country is hurting now ac the electorate bought a pig in a bag in january 2008.

  30. ac theconomis blows resulting from the extremely increase cost of living have so much become a way of life for bajans that gas went up by 15 cents and there was not even a murmur.

  31. bajan to the bone your analysis is indeed food for thought- i have spoken to politicians from both sides and they seem noy to be aware of the power of the floating vote. i for one could not vote for the blp with mr arthur at the helm despite his success in managing the economy before. he needs to be sent a message that academia is not all that matters.

  32. You know what you all remind me of ? Cockroaches in an old dilapidated barn, scavenging on the carcass of all but dead jackass in the we hours of the morning only to SCATTER when the lights of REALITY truth and wisdom are turned on.
It all over DLP-ites…the mule cannot be revived…..hollow thoughts won’t help now…she too far gone…..14 years shall be your call

  33. @ ac

TOO Late shall be your cry…….ducks ? (lol ) what ducks…..yardfowls
14 yrs in the wilderness ac ..14yrs……you will have balance and Bajan fahlife to keep your company…….the ducks ? lol

  34. ole onion bags don’t count your cikens sorry yardfowls before they are hatched because should your predictions prove untrue your ole onion bags might be left to rot for another 14 years.

” Are we so devoid of that cognitive process that allows us to separate thinkers from shouters ” ? and
” Mia Mottley is like daffodil bulbs in spring . She will always return when light showers caress those bulbs that shoot into life” .
As a literary piece , Yardbroom, your writing has created the distinct possibility of making me get to work , as the French would say, enretard, after time ; I felt compelled to read and respond . The two pieces quoted above speak for my appreciation of the prose.
Analytically, I can say that Mr Stuart is the classic example which distinguishes the THINKER from the SHOUTER ; you have said what you think of Miss Mottley. Need I say more?
I do wish you would regale us with more pieces of this standard. I shall leave any further political analysis for the politically motivated pundits of whom I am sure there will be many. Thank you for making my morning brighter.

  37. @Bajan to the bone.
I dont know where and how you did your prediction but I would say that i have to disagrre with you on your perdiction. If we use aa base that the ruling party has lost over 6% in this country and we further say that there is a middle class crisis, and we then conclude that the normal attritional loss of votea to the governmnet would occur then I cannot see some of the people you have will win. The facts are when you are losing you will lose. Another side jpoint, this a a government with out a pleasing record, the members are all new comers and they have no polilical collateral and no
bankable performances with which you can even suggest that they can win. Many won with under 3% margin of victory and in a swing and if the swing holds to six they will lose. Some of those with higher margin of victory you have placed in the loss column . I have a respect for numbers and so i think that emotion and sentimentality will not suffice.I would advise you to go again and think about the swing and the possible furhher swing and then compute again. You may caome near to the mark

  38. @ac
Your reasoning is flawed. “we should not vote in the BLP because they are not giving solutions”

Think, why were the DLP voted in in 2008. Was it based on their solutions? have those solutions worked? What should be my rationale for voting for them again?

Though I agree that the BLP should do more to get my vote, your argument isn’t the one which a ruling government should use.

This submission is not the same as those that have gone before everyone will not dance to your tune.

Chill, I do not mind being scoffed at.

When I a wrote a submission on Owen Arthur – The Master Tactician – in September 2009. and said that he would make a bid for the leadership of the BLP again.

I comment on what I believe taking various factors into consideration.
You seem to think judging from your comments that the General Election has been called, votes cast, votes counted and the result decided. I have not had ” a magic potion” but common sense tells me that has not happened as yet.

I am obliged that you have forgiven me…but I know that will not last.

  41. There are a few here who have taken umbrage because I have dared to mention that it is possible for Mia Mottley to return and lead the BLP. They do not like that, I am not playing any Party games. I say it the way I see it. However, it is your right to disagree.

I do not conform to straight line thinking, life is more complex than that.

  42. @ Yardbroom
How remote can we get…..At present Miss M is a non issue unless she forms a third party and furnish it WELL !!!

  43. @ Yardie
but common sense tells me that has not happened as yet…

Yardie boy haven’t you heard, ” this is the silly season.”..

  44. More likely than not .mia is young strong and determined and also has time on her side when compared to the old guard .

  45. @ yardbroom.
I did give you a veiled warning that the political sycophants would come after you !!!

  46. Hi, An Observer
    February 16, 2012 @ 1:28pm
    “Thanks”

It is easy to write a submission that will be popular but sometimes there is more merit in being honest.
I have written submissions that were favourable to Owen Arthur, Mia Mottley and the DLP because no Prime Minister, politician or Political Party is the font of all wisdom. We are fed a lie and we believe that to be the case. That straight line thinking encourages us to change a Party at the general election with the belief we can relax our problems will be solved.

If you ask some people why they are voting for the DLP or BLP they have no rational explanation for their action.

The belief that all the country’s problems will be solved at a stroke holds sway in Barbados.

We must demand more from our politicians than “blind” loyalty.
    We must ask them
    HOW
    WHEN
    WHY
And at what cost. How will the action taken benefit Barbadians in say 15 or 20 years. When we are able to ask those questions and hold our politicians to account, we will have a democracy that can work for us.

  47. @ Bajan2DBone
You clearly pulled those names out of a hat. A 3% swing is all that is required to topple the DLP. By the way, James Paul won by 25 votes, he therefore starts at minus.

  48. @YArdbroom
“What is important is the result or likely result of the action taken, it is that result that determines success.”

In essence then we cannot judge any current action until such time that results can be shown or indicated to be likely. I wouldn’t want to apply that reasoning to every “action” by our government, ministers or politicians but hey, time will tell.

  49. Hi, Observing
    Feb 16, 2012 @ 8:36pm
What is important is the result or likely result of the action taken, it is that result that determines success.

Quote: “Yardbroom In essence then we cannot judge any current action until such time that results can be shown or indicated to be likely. I wouldn’t want to apply that reasoning to every “action” by our government, Ministers or politicians but hey, time will tell.”
    – – – – – – – – – – – –
The point is by “analysis” you consider the various likely outcomes and you make a decision based on your analysis of the situation.

If Prime Minister Stuart thought, I could sack 6 or 8 of the eleven. It would prove he had the authority and it would have taught them a lesson, but there is a bigger picture.

The Cabinet would have been depleted of important Ministers who are advanced in the planning of various projects. New Ministers would have to acquaint themselves with projects on which decisions are more than likely expected. This is large-scale change perhaps less than a year before a general election is due.

    (1) The opposition (BLP) would say the Government is in disarray.
    (2) The electorate would be bemused and unsure of the hand on the tiller.
    (3) Prime Minister Stuart would have courted short-lived popularity – encouraged by BLP supporters – much to the disadvantage of his Party, Government and the general electorate of Barbados.

It is best to have whipped them in line in private. Let them know they are not as strong as they thought they were, and reinforce that unity is strength.

Good governance is not a shouting match, it is making the best use of resources available; it is also being strong enough for a quiet word to make things happen.

I’m not suggesting extreme action (sacking 6, or even 2 or 3). But, no action and no comment given the gravity of the correspondence and internal “frustrations” as well as its reinforcement of external perceptions may not be the wisest choice in hindsight.

With the arthur/mottley dispute it is abundantly clear where both stand. Credit to arthur for digging in, like it or lump it. On the dlp side no one has a “real” clue where the leaders stand even though its obvious there’re public and external differences. This is where the challenge to their reelection chances on the issue of leadership will lie.
