Ousted President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide

Dr  Jean-Bertrand Aristide
Former President of Haiti
19 January 2011

I would like to thank the government and the people of South Africa for the historic hospitality, deeply rooted in Ubuntu, extended to my family and I Since my forced arrival in the Mother Continent six and a half years ago, the people of Haiti have never stopped calling for my return to Haiti.  Despite the enormous challenges that they face in the aftermath of the deadly January 12, 2010 earthquake, their determination to make the return happen has increased.

As far as I am concerned, I am ready.  Once again I express my readiness to leave today, tomorrow, at any time.  The purpose is very clear: To contribute to serving my Haitian sisters and brothers as a simple citizen in the field of education. The return is indispensable, too, for medical reasons: It is strongly recommended that I not spend the coming winter in South Africa’s because in 6 years I have undergone 6 eye surgeries.  The surgeons are excellent and very well skilled, but the unbearable pain experienced in the winter must be avoided in order to reduce any risk of further complications and blindness.

So, to all those asking me to return home, I reiterate my willingness to leave today, tomorrow, at any time.  Let us hope that the Haitian and South African governments will enter into communication in order to make that happen in the next coming days.

United to the Haitian people, once again my family and I express our sincere gratitude to the government and the people of South Africa.

  1. Thanks Ras!

  2. Duvalier is facing charges by the sounds of things. I bet he thinks that he can go back and become President again. The only palace he should be in is the one spelt P.R.I.S.O.N.

  3. Aristide for President.Lavalas for life.

  4. Duvalier’s defense seems to be built on the statute of limitations having expired.

  5. Baby Doc says he wants to run for President.

  6. Baby Doc is broke, so he has come back to rob the Haitian people. And you know what? There are some who are willing to die for him. Mankind will never learn!

  7. Many people underestimate the work of foreign powers-not necessarily foreign governments-in Haiti. Duvalier, Aristide etc…are all puppets working for these foriegn powers.Do you know that beautiful island has the 5th biggest US embassy in the world? why is that?such a bad place according to many, nothing to gain it appears! God alone knows.
As a haitian descent my heart goes out to the orphans and widows…the Haitian state has failed them.

  8. It seems that Haiti is the condemned nation of the world, they go from one crisi right into another. Right now these crises are overlapping, the earthquake, the sickness and now Baby doc. His return has thrown everything into a tailspin, it will take another six to twelve months to see the impact he has on his return to haiti. I will watch with anticipation how the CSME leaders deal with haiti from now on.

“Baby Doc is broke, so he has come back to rob the Haitian people.”

According to news reports, Haiti is getting back some of the money he has in a Swiss account. Some is better than none, but I’m curious if/when this will ever happen.

  10. Baby Doc may be broke, but he probably has the backing of the “Upper Class” in Haiti, the ones who wives, were so eager back then to join his wife at the Palace with the A/C on super low ,just to wear their expensive European mink coats.

  11. This is a plan by the Hiatian merchant class to prepare the way for Baby Doc to re-enetr Hiatian Politics. They are the ones that sponsor this trip and his accomodation. Because the last time I read Baby Doc was living on welfare in France after his stolen loot was frozen by the authorities. All this legal issue is grandstanding and a farce which he will be acquitted and thus paved the way for him to re-enter politics.Just follow the money.

  14. Can you believe this crap? Here is the best part, Duvalier call for national reconciliation!

Port-Au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) — A former U.S. congressman was among a group of American attorneys accompanying former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier as he spoke in the country’s capital Friday.

Former Republican Congressman Bob Barr said he is not serving as Duvalier’s attorney, but is in Port-au-Prince to consult, assist and be Duvalier’s voice to the international community.

Barr represented Georgia’s 7th District in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003, and was the Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee in 2008. He currently practices law and runs a consulting firm based in Atlanta.
