US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

The WikiLeaks saga has given rise to some interesting analysis. Is Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, justified in leaking what has been classified as sensitive communication between the US State Department and its embassies and consulates around the world? Assange’s position is ‘the disclosures are purely an exercise in democracy, which is partly understood to include embarrassing government officials and exposing what is seen as hypocrisy in national and international politics.” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has rebutted by stating “the publication of classified diplomatic cables constitutes an “attack on the international community. It is an attack on…the alliances and partnerships, the conversations and negotiations that safeguard global security and advance economic prosperity.”

Modernghanna.com used an interesting analogy to describe how a diminutive Australian by the name of Julian Assange has used the Internet to expose the demagogy of the world’s most powerful countries.

“An old African story teaches that the size of the elephant is no guarantee that it is safe from the machinations of small and lesser known animals in the forest. So the tiny ant could find its way into the elephant’s nose, and the elephant would spend days begging the little ant to stop biting.”

One of the WikiLeaks cables targets how the Chinese government orchestrated cyber attacks on search engine giant Google dating back to 2002. Although it has been reported  Google resolved the issue in July to prevent censorship of Chinese search traffic, there is a learning which BU and others have been highlighting for some time. There is a comfort level by mainstream media and others to quote government spokespersons and so-called reputable news services without question.  What should be evident from the WikiLeaks saga is the firm confirmation of how trusted ‘entities’ have abused positions of privilege in the name of maintaining democracy or stoking geopolitcal interest.

In the same way 911 has changed world travel so too WikiLeaks has changed how news and information is given credibility by ordinary citizens. What a mess humankind, the intelligent species of the world now finds itself.

  1. A few months ago an employee of Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corp (HSBC) in Switzerland named Herve Falciani walked out of the Bank with data containing the names of 24,000 account holders from its Private Banking Div. which the French Gov’t seized following a complaint from Switzerland. The French authorities checked the list and found that some of its citizens had accounts (minimum opening deposit $500.000) which earned income that wasn’t declared or taxed. The list was also shared with the Gov’ts of Britain, USA and Canada which also discovered that citizens from their respective countries also had accounts with large balances which earned undeclared/untaxed income. What did the Revenue Depts of these countries do? They contacted their citizens and asked them to pay their back taxes with penalties or face prosecution.

The unpaid taxes were not penny ante stuff but amounted to millions of dollars which the Treasuries of these countries welcomed with open arms( France supposed received half a billion Euros) Despite the howls of protest from the Swiss Gov’t and Banking authorities the French refused to return the list until they were good and ready. The information (probably copied) is back in the Bank’s possession..

Did Monsieur Falciani break the law? Did he violate any agreement with his employer? The answer to both is yes and he will be subject to arrest if he sets foot in Switzerland again. Did his illegal act deter the French;Brits, Americans or Canadians from acting on the illegally obtained information? A resounding NO

I wrote the above in the context of the Wikileaks saga because it is rumoured that Wikileaks has some damaging information on some large Corporations. If the information is revealed and the Corporations are found to have broken the law will the Gov’ts now condemning Assange rush to prosecute them?

    Vamos a ver

  4. @Chris. I have no idea what the inner workings of the various security services are – and neither, I suspect, do you. Therefore, neither you nor I have any idea why anyone (and his being a private is totally immaterial) would have access to such a large amount of information. Speculation, in my view, is pointless. And if you think that you can arrange things better, I am sure that the security services of all countries are awaiting, breath baited, your job application – soon you ought to be as rich as Bill Gates.

I also want to take issue with you, Chris, on your comment suggesting that of course you did not expect Assange to be released in London yesterday and that the Swedish charges are merely a cover for an action emanating from the USA. Assange is accused of several sexually-related crimes against two women, including rape, in Sweden. The European warrant is issued by the Swedish Supreme Court after hearing appeals from lower Swedish courts from which the issuance of a warrant was appealed. So, it is not an arbitrary process as some people seem to think and suggest. That, however, is not my point of issue. My point of issue is that your comment is easily open to the interpretation that Assange ought to be allowed to do whatever he likes, including (allegedly) rape and sexually abuse of women, without penalty – presumably because he is so important to the agendas of countries adverse to the interests of those of which Babados is a part. The standards (you could be inferred as saying) that courts use in determining whether to grant bail or not and whether to charge people or not, ought to be abated and vacated in the case of Assange, because of his importance via breaching of privacy and privilege. I have dealt with a few rape cases in my life and I would suggest that, unless you want to court the censure and displeasure of women and rape victims everywhere, you step right back. If you were raped or sexually molested (or crime perpetrated against you) allegedly by Assange, would you for one second fail to take action against him? As you are fond of saying, “Hmmmmmmmmmmmm”.

  5. @Amused

I am truly amused, but I am not surprised that you would uphold the status quo of secrecy. So if you don’t get him for murder, pin a charge of shoplifting on him, right? The lengths that some people would go to inflict punishment in order to reinforce their authority and dominance. A dubious charge of rape? Come on, man. We have seen it all before.

Yes, we know where you coming from… he who is without sin, that so much want to punish sin, will always cast the first stone… but we already know the story, the characters and the outcome.

  6. WikiLeaks founder appear to have his support. BBC is reporting Hackers have taken down MasterCard website.

  7. @ ST

“This whole episode doesn’t smell right…”

This is what the conspiracy theorists are all saying…

COULD YOU BE ON TO SOMETHING HERE???

  8. THIS IS SOME OF THE STUFF BEING FLOATED:

Summary: Australian Julian Assange is “wanted” by Interpol. due to 2 very questionable rape charges in Sweden. Presumably he is “wanted” because of his publications of US State secrets via Wikileaks, an organization that seems closely related to George Soros and Rothhschild, whose publication, The Economist, has given Assange a prize – as has Amnesty International, too, which is affiliated to Rothschild´s IMF and World Bank. Several observers make Assange a CIA agent – and both he and the CIA denied that they had any disagreements with each other – despite WikiLeaks’ disclosure that the CIA made the list of UN staff, incl. Secretary-General, to be spied on at Hillary Clinton’s wish.

Despite the fact that the British police know his whereabouts, they have not arrested him. One Bradley Manning was arrested for having pinched secret information from the U.S. State Department for WikiLeaks. More amazing is that the politically correct Guardian with a Rothschild director on its board, and the NWO publications, The New York Times and Der Spiegel, have been very keen on bringing the “revelations” which have, apart from names of Afghan agents, almost exclusively contained already known diplomatic gossip.

A clue to a purpose of the Wikileaks may be a message from Wayne Madsen Research that WikiLeaks received information on Julius Baer´s secret clientele. A publication would destroy confidence and allow a hostile takeover by Soros´ friends at Goldman Sachs. By extension, Assange announced to disclose banking secrets of 0ne or 2 major banks, the Bank of America probably aimed at, to create a bank run with consequent collapse of finance and banking industries in early 2111.

Disturbing is the fact that Hillary Clinton has forbidden employees of the State Department to visit the WikiLeaks site, and that Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Domestic Security Committee, had threatened U.S. companies like Amazon to lift the WikiLeaks websites. This does not bode well for the future of the free internet. Many believe that the Wikileaks affair has precisely been designed to introduce more police state censorship of the Internet. Another purpose seems to be the buildup of an accusation of Chinese cyber attacks, which seem to emanate from WikiLeaks exile-Chinese hacking Chinese government computers – with CIA´s knowledge. The Washington Times said that Congress members complain of a lack of cooperation at the State Department as for detecting the sources of the leaks. (cf:euromed.dk)

  10. Chris’ point is relevant, any Network Manager worth his or her salt has network tools to detect unusual downloads, Internet sites visited etc based on predetermined parameters.

The USA must accept some culpability.

  11. consequent collapse of finance and banking industries in early 2111.
    ==============================================
@TB I guess the above should read 2011 (not 2111)
.. interesting theory (I just dropped it on the BBC Blogs)

  12. @Amused: “I have no idea what the inner workings of the various security services are – and neither, I suspect, do you.

No, I don’t know the inner details directly. But I am very knowledgeable about ICT security in general, and know what can be done (and allegedly wasn’t). Do you think Google are the only ones with experts in machine learning and algorithmic pattern recognition?

@A: “And if you think that you can arrange things better, I am sure that the security services of all countries are awaiting, breath baited, your job application…

No need; this kind of stuff is “COTS” — Commercial Off-The-Shelf. Heck, I regularily implement such systems for my own private clients.

@A: “I also want to take issue with you, Chris, on your comment suggesting that of course you did not expect Assange to be released in London yesterday and that the Swedish charges are merely a cover for an action emanating from the USA.

Please forgive me for being cynical. And, like you, I take true sexual violation seriously.

But it *is* interesting what constitutes rape in Sweden. Did the woman not know he wasn’t wearing a condom?

And why only after the WikiLeaks affair were the authorities suddenly so serious about these charges when previously they were being ignored?

  13. @TMB: “I FOUND THIS PARTICULAR SITE FASCINATING…

You might also find this newsletter by an internationally recognized security expert, Bruce Schneier, equally fascinating:

    http://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram.html

It’s required reading for anyone who claims to be knowledgeable about security in general, and ICT security specifically.

  14. @BU.David: “Chris’ point is relevant, any Network Manager worth his or her salt has network tools to detect unusual downloads, Internet sites visited etc based on predetermined parameters.

    Thanks for that David.

And to share a bit of knowledge, very powerful software is available for free (or very low cost) for those Network Managers worth their salt.

    http://www.untangle.com/

…is just one of many examples. I wonder why the “great” US of A didn’t implement something like this to monitor their people who had access to sensitive information?

    Or, maybe, they did….

  15. @ CH

Thanks ‘ole chap – I appreciate it!!!

Can I draw you into a discussion on the CYBER-ATTACKS against specific financial interests which have frozen WIKILEAKS* accounts?

Is this a new dawn in an era where “war” is being fought from a computer terminal?

Is this “all”HYPE? Or is what we are witnessing serious stuff?

Finally does this change the future for the internet and moreover what is all the HYPE* surrounding cloud computing and does it have wings as a specialized technology and how will hackers exploit it?

Sorry about the melee of questions!!!

  16. @TB

To frame your question you should accept that technology is driving behaviour, a case of the cart before the horse.

    Carry on!

  17. @TMB: “Can I draw you into a discussion on the CYBER-ATTACKS against specific financial interests which have frozen WIKILEAKS* accounts?

I would be *very* interested in being drawn into such a discussion. However, it is a big subject, so I would suggest to and ask of BU.David to start a new Blog on the subject.

But to answer your questions now:

@TMB: “Is this a new dawn in an era where “war” is being fought from a computer terminal?

Without question. But not just “war”, but even more so espionage.

@TMB: “Is this “all”HYPE? Or is what we are witnessing serious stuff?

***VERY*** serious stuff. Sadly, mostly because Micro$oft’s systems are so incompetently insecure, and because of the average “user” who will click on anything they’re told to (IMHO).

@TMB: “Finally does this change the future for the internet and moreover what is all the HYPE* surrounding cloud computing and does it have wings as a specialized technology and how will hackers exploit it?

Answer to the first part of the question: possibly.

Answer to the second part of the question: “cloud computing” is already here. And it’s a very good idea. But, as with all things, with benefits come risks. It’s a matter of managing the risks.

  18. Assange’s AUSSIE lawyer James D. Catlin says the whole thing is contrived, concocted SWEDISH CRAP>>>

    http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/12/02/when-it-comes-to-assange-r-pe-case-the-swedes-are-making-it-up-as-they-go-along/

  19. @ CH

I welcome DAVID doing a BLOG on the abovementioned as most of us are “Illiterate” regarding this piece of EQUIPMENT* we sit in front of day after day – taking for granted technology that in many way can be compared to a “scalpel” (may not be the best analogy) – but a tool that can caused serious damage (in the wrong hands) yet at the same time remove and heal a malignancy (in the right hands)…

    @ DAVID

I totally agree – “technology is driving behaviour..”

The question is Dave – “IS IT A RUNAWAY TRAIN – WITH A RESULTANT TRAIN-WRECK IN THE DISTANT?”

  20. @TMB: “taking for granted technology that in many way can be compared to a “scalpel” (may not be the best analogy)

LOL… I would argue a better analogy would be that of a “horseless carriage” (a motor vehicle for those too young to know the term).

Yes, it will get you from where you are now to where you want to go more quickly. But if you’re not careful you might crash.

Someone might sell you a “lemon”.

And if you are not vigilant, someone might modify your carriage without your knowledge, endangering you and others on the “road”….

  21. I am confused even more about ASSANGE’s Sexual Liaison with Anna Ardin who is said to be a radical feminist lesbian and this other “dotty” bird Sofia Wilén…

From Barrister Caitlin is the assertion that:

“[The] phenomena of social networking through the internet and mobile phones constrains Swedish authorities from augmenting the evidence against Assange because it would look even less credible in the face of tweets by Anna Ardin and SMS texts by Sofia Wilén boasting of their respective conquests after the “crimes”…

    IS THIS SHITE FOR REAL???

    The contention is that:

“In the case of Ardin it is clear that she has thrown a party in Assange’s honour at her flat after the “crime” and tweeted to her followers that she is with the “the world’s coolest smartest people, it’s amazing!”. Go on the internet and see for yourself. That Ardin has sought unsuccessfully to delete these exculpatory tweets from the public record should be a matter of grave concern. That she has published on the internet a guide on how to get revenge on cheating boyfriends ever graver. The exact content of Wilén’s mobile phone texts is not yet known but their bragging and exculpatory character has been confirmed by Swedish prosecutors. Neither Wilén’s nor Ardin’s texts complain of rape….”

DOES THIS STUFF SMELL OR WHAT?

  22. @ CH

“I would argue a better analogy would be that of a “horseless carriage… Someone might sell you a ‘lemon’… And if you are not vigilant, someone might modify your carriage without your knowledge, endangering you and others on the “road…”

    RTFLMAO….

    That’s soooooo good…. LOL

  23. 7 Steps To Legal Revenge by Anna Ardin

    Step 1
Consider very carefully if you really must take revenge. It is almost always better to forgive than to avenge . . . (THAT’S A JOKE!)

    Step 2
Think about why you want revenge. You need to be clear about who to take revenge on, as well as why. Revenge is never directed against only one person, but also the actions of the person.

    Step 3
The principle of proportionality. Remember that revenge will not only match the deed in size but also in nature. A good revenge is linked to what has been done against you. For example, if you want revenge on someone who cheated or who dumped you, you should use a punishment with dating/sex/fidelity involved.

    Step 4
Do a brainstorm of appropriate measures for the category of revenge you’re after. To continue the example above, you can sabotage your victim’s current relationship, such as getting his new partner to be unfaithful or ensure that he gets a madman after him. Use your imagination!

    Step 5
Figure out how you can systematically take revenge.
Send your victim a series of letters and photographs that make your victim’s new partner believe that you are still together which is better than to tell just one big lie on one single occasion

    Step 6
Rank your systematic revenge schemes from low to high in terms of likely success, required input from you, and degree of satisfaction when you succeed.
The ideal, of course, is a revenge as strong as possible but this requires a lot of hard work and effort for it to turn out exactly as you want it to.

    Step 7
Get to work. And remember what your goals are while you are operating, ensure that your victim will suffer the same way as he made you suffer.

IF ASSANGE IS A FALL-GUY IN THIS SORDID SAGA – YA’ GOTTA’ FEEL HE WAS SET UP PROPERLY!!!

  24. David,

I have to disagree that technology drives behaviour. It has to be something else. People buy technology, not to use it as a tool but because it is in fashion. many people with computers that can’t use them. Cell phones that can’t use them. Most people see internet and related gadgets as entertainment. They fiddle needlessly for hours with a cell phone; doing nothing constructive. Maybe you coming from a different angle.

  25. I think the correct procedure to follow if you were in possession of sensitive data highlighting corruption at the highest levels of politics and finance would be to hand this data to Police Authorities or Agencies for investigation. However if you do not trust Government Agencies because you believe they are also bent on the payroll, then something like a Wiki-Website may be the best way to go to release the dope.

  26. .. It seems some people in this world have very big egos and love showing off their intelligence

  27. @kiki… Can we please come to some level of peace?

I believe that all humans are very intelligent.

Thus, all humans must question everything they are told, since they’re probably not being told the whole truth all of the time.

  36. Rule1. Set a trap to catch a Rat. That is exactly what the USA did. So far the information has been of little importance.

  37. The saddest part of this witch hunt to me is the spectacle of our great black hope (along with his Bajan AG) elected for change, transparency and open government reverting to US presidential type.
Censorship, pressuring sovereign nations to corrupt their judicial procedures and all to enable laws to give him (?) the ability to switch off the internet if in his sole opinion the USA is threatened.
This is a manufactured crisis, not that the leaks are manufactured , most of us understand the professional lying and cover-ups by diplomats and serving officers.
But again we must ask : Did the government let it happen … or did they make it happen in order to rein in the differently informed and thus anarchic nature of the internet community.

Or as Glenn Beck’s theory says it’s all part of Soros’ scheme to crash the system and bring in the NWO.

  38. Rule 2
Test Run. Perfect guinea pig Assanga. Give him everthing he needs . with few exceptions. Eventually he bites and he gets caught. This was all intentional in and effort to catch a thief. Like they say “A thief from a thief make the devil laugh.” There is more to come.

  39. @ ST
“Or as Glenn Beck’s theory says it’s all part of Soros’ scheme to crash the system and bring in the NWO…”

Most admit that Glenn Beck spends too much time with the “tooth fairy” – BUT* what if there’s something to his allegation?

Is SOROS* really who HE* claims to be or is he a real stooge for the ROTHSCHILDS & the Illuminati government?

Mastercard have been hit; Visa International as well; PAYPAL; Swiss bank POSTFINANCE; the Swedish prosecutors’ office and other sites deemed hostile to WIKILEAKS* are targets for on-going cyber attacks…

So the plot thicken with fresh revelations and dire warnings that if Assange is harmed or extradited to the USA that a “POISON PILL” will be released that could plunge world governments into anarchy…

Assange is reported to have called it – “his insurance”…

The question remains – WHAT IN HELL DID THIS GUY GET HIS HANDS ON???

  41. Sources report that CABLES* & files from the ISRAELIS and from THE VATICAN* will be released by the weekend…

The depth to which this info will go is debatable…

We all know all that Mossad has a lot to hide…
