What is your mirror image? Barbados as a sovereign nation became independent from Britain 44 years ago. As an island we have achieved much in the last 44 years, thanks to the foresight of our past leaders. Most Barbadians, enjoy a standard of living which is the envy of many of their neighbors and others. Free bus fare for school children, free lunch for primary school children, free health care and free education.  How much better can it get? A per capital income of $19,300 and a Human Development Index Rating of 42 out of 169 countries. However, have our progress and successes blinded us from being strict guardians of our fate?  Probably a case of complacency and ignorance replacing Pride & Industry! Many man hours lost due to water outages and construction work being carried out on highways during peak traffic. Some may complain about my highlighting of the creeping cracks which threatens our accomplishments over the last 44yrs, but my responsibility is to my son and to Bajans not born yet. Therefore I will never forfeit my right to freedom of speech and expression; too many of us want to win a fight without fighting! Take a look in the mirror and ask yourself who or what am I fighting for.

In 2010 we have the major telecommunications companies being foreign owned. Where are the local black businessmen who brag about how much money they have? The power company is about to be gobbled up by a Canadian Corporate giant whose only motive may be supernormal profits. Will the Barbados Water Authority be next? Why would we consider a Waste to Energy plant in Barbados with the toxic Dioxin being a byproduct, when we can utilize the free sunshine we receive 300 days a year for energy generation.   How much smarter are we in our 44th year of Independence? Where are the investigative journalists in our 44th year of independence or is it a case of media houses putting commercial interests before reporting relevant news?

It’s a sad reflection in 2010 of who we are, after government spends so much money on education, to think there are no locally owned Banks in Barbados – and most are headed by foreigners. Oh how things have changed as black Barbadians were employed in the Banks from the late 60`s now to be relegated in 2010 to be just employees. Banks, still find it easier in 2010 to give the working class persons loans to purchase cars easier than for land purchase. After 44 years of Independence or semi independence we still have a Governor General.

Why are we in 2010 in the 44th year of Independence producing so many academics that are ignorant entrepreneurially? Are we fooling ourselves about being Independent or are we so caught up with Americanism and its corporate culture rather than its entrepreneurial culture.  Every black and white Barbadian should seek to plant the seed of hope and promise for the future.

I am the result of black defiance from Bussa, Marcus Garvey, Rosa Parks, Errol Barrow, Grantley Adams, Samuel Jackman and Clement Payne making a stand. Black Barbadians are the conclusion of 400 years of resistance. Every Barbadian Black and Redleg are the descendants of hope and inspiration of past black generations. We are the exclamation point at the end of every civil rights speech from “I have a dream” to “By any means necessary.” Barbadians of all classes’ race or creed must co-exist in peace and harmony and those entrusted with our heritage must ensure a fair share for all.

Thus I say, let us work together to rectify these social creeping cracks before it’s too late. Let’s be inspired by the beauty of our history and inspire our families with Courage, Strength, Unity and Pride.  However, I dare say our culture must be maintained and we must never surrender our culture to those who have made Barbados their home.

I fully endorse your comments in this article and would like to make my own observations but I find there are some party supprters from both sides of the fence who would take a well constructed article like this and reduce their arguments, not dicussions, to pure gutter politics, abusive language and all. So all I would say is keep the good work up and I hope your writing at this level would uplift the quality of comments that appear on BU. Keep it up Sir.
I know I said I would just read and not comment, but this is such a good article that I had to contribute my two cents worth. I look forward to the time when I can converse with intellegent bloggers who can see pass party politics and concentrate on building barbados and in so doing build themselves, or vici-versa

  3. I Love our Bimshire, every time I watch our Independance Parade at the Garrison, I can’t help shedding tears of deep felt emotional pride in our masterful display of such ceremonial precision exibited by our Defense Force, Police, and of course the other unarmed units as well, not to mention the Mounted horse unit of the Police, and I’m sure those diplomats viewing our Parade, would be amazed at such a display of exactitude, that simply cannot be bettered by any, elsewhere in the world.

When I ponder what our respective governments have provided for us, given our very limited financial resources, free education to all, from primary to tertiary level, which not even the great American can give to theirs, free schoolmeals, free heath care, etc, I cannot begin to fully express my heart felt gratitude and love for our leaders, both past and present, our people, we have been BLESSED with so much, but, there is an attitude of averse complaining among so many, not being consciously aware of how MUCH we have to give Almighty God, praise and thanks for.

If we, as a nation, do not get back to our Only Provider, Almighty God, and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, in serious, deep reflection of true repentance for our preoccupation with materialism, wanton, brash immorality and sin in our society, we are not going to make it, for, as His Word states:

“Except the LORD build the house ( family, parish, nation) They labour in vain who (seek) to build it. Unless, the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.” ( Psa. 127:1) emphasis added.

Again, we hear from Him and His Word:

“Righteousness exalts a nation, But SIN is a reproach ( Shame, disgrace) to any people.” ( Prov. 14:34) emphasis added.

  4. I’m not sure where this comment belongs on the blog, please place it where most appropriate if it meets your criteria.

I’m shocked at the level of indifference exhibited by a Senior Officer with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

I’m used to customer satisfaction and relations not being of importance to/in Barbados businesses…..but when it comes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it seems to have reached a level that is unimaginable even compared to businesses.

There seems to be no recognition by Officers within Foreign Affairs that they’re supposed to work for the people of Barbados!!!!

They function as if they’re entrepreneurs responsible only to themselves and their own welfare…..making their own rules, it seems…. in deciding who, where, when, why and if they would respond to an individual regarding issues and concerns before them based on no objective criteria.

Th idea here is not to point a finger at all officers within Foreign Affairs, hopefully there is someone working in the interest of the Barbados people…..and I hope this is not representative of the Government as a whole.

Whoever runs Foreign Affairs….hopefully the Minister, needs to take a look at the functioning of the officers especially the Senior Officers and make sure they’re working in the interest of the people AND NOT THEIR OWN EGO!!!!!!

In reply to your comment immediately above, I wish to remind you that when we have a DLP operative, when he was actually the Prime Minister, telling the people of Barbados that if they were not satisfied with anything that the then government did , quote, “they could like it or lump it”, end quote, then just what do you expect to get from their lower minions today.
Those were the infamous words that “SIR” Sandi used during his tenure as PM. Needless to also remind you that he did not remain PM for much longer after that.
