President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Dear Madame Secretary of State, welcome to Barbados. Please convey to your distinguished President our best wishes for continued good health, wisdom and success in his endeavours to improve the lot of the American people. It was sad to read on this blog and in the Nation Newspaper of Thursday, June 13, 2010 an open letter written to you by the Political Advisor to the Prime Minister of my country.

In Barbados, we have a saying that “the higher the monkey climbs the more he shows his tail”. What this essentially means is that the more persons persist in their ways the clearer their true character becomes. When you consider that the author of that letter is being paid approximately Bds $160,000 annually to produce that kind of political dribble then you begin to see the true character of our Government.

Madame Secretary of State we sincerely hope that your visit will engender the kind of reforms so desperately needed in our institutions of governance. Your visit could not have been more timely as we struggle to deal with the collapse of Clico Barbados. Barbadians would love to follow your country’s example and send a clear message to those who abuse the trust and confidence that ordinary people place in institutions in which they conduct business but we have neither the laws nor calibre of Government to permit such. The imprisonment of Bernard Madoff and Alan Stanford stands as a perfect example of your country’s commitment to fairness and justice for all. We wish we could do the same at Clico.

For some time now the author of the letter has been trying to accomplish the impossible task of trying to convince his fellow countrymen of some similarities, though not seen with the naked eye, between your distinguished President and our bewildered Prime Minister. It would be blasphemous to even attempt to think such.

President Obama is a Noble Peace Prize winner who has served as the first black Editor of the Harvard Law Review, a prestigious magazine of Harvard University. He has written many brilliant works of which “The Audacity of Hope” is a best seller and a must read. It is fascinating to read his many quotations and notes from which one can glean the true character of the man.

David Thompson has never, to my certain knowledge, written a single sentence anywhere that can provide some insight as to who he is or what he stands for or that can improve the lives of the people he purports to represent. Unlike President Obama Mr. Thompson inherited a Government with 6% unemployment, over $2.5 billion in foreign reserves, the highest level of investor confidence ever enjoyed in this country, a cost of living that was manageable and a country where the hopes and dreams of our young people were accomplishable. Today all that has shattered.

We marvel at your President’s dedication to fulfilling his election promises and his recognition of “the urgency of now” in correcting the social and economic challenges his country faces. He knew of the unhealthy state of the American economy before he came to office and immediately upon his election he set about the task of correcting them.

All our Government has persistently done since coming to office is moan and groan about the hand it has been dealt.

The billions your President has spent in stimulus packages to get the economy moving again have already begun to bore fruit. His huge capital works programme, the reorganization of the small business sector, the provision of funding for the banking system, the housing programme, the insurance industry and his much talked about health care bill are all working in harmony to rebuild and refashion the American economy. Your President has been very proactive in tackling the economic problems in his country.

In Barbados, our Prime Minister has adopted the “wait and see” attitude and this is costing the country dearly. Our international reputation continues to fall, our credit rating has plummeted to an embarrassing level, investor confidence is waning, public servants and Barbadians generally are gradually losing hope and confidence in their country’s ability to realize their dreams and aspirations. Unemployment continues to rise and reveals some very frightening statistics.

For the first time in the history of my beautiful country more men are unemployed than women and this poses a very serious threat to our social stability since idle men are more prone to anti-social behavior than women. Persons who now make up the workforce are working for far less than they did under the last Government due largely to the high cost of living – a consequence of the excessive taxes being extracted from the dwindling workforce.

In the USA, President Obama is building more human capital by investing more money into Health, Education and other social services. He has been strident in his criticism of the immigration law in Arizona, which seeks to prosecute and deport illegal immigrants. The President as already called for a federal overhaul of all immigration laws and stated that the Arizona law threatens to “undermined basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our community that is so crucial to keeping us safe”. I have know doubt that that the President, in keeping with his election promise to rebuild a nation torn apart by years of war rhetoric by the Bush administration would do everything in his power to overturn Arizona’s counter productive immigration law.

In Barbados our Government has severely cut support to our vital social sectors and has adopted one of the most vulgar and inhumane immigration policy in the region. In spite of the fact that we have lead responsibility for the Caribbean Single Market Economy (CSME) we have enacted an immigration policy that shuts out our regional brothers and sisters. Our Government has exclaimed to all and sundry in the region that “ever so welcome wait for a call”.

Madam Secretary you will be shocked to learn that we have a Guyanese lady who has been living in Barbados for the last eleven years with her five children, one of which is Barbadian by birth. This lady has reportedly been told by the Immigration Department that she and her children will have to leave the country or be deported, in spite of the fact that she qualifies for citizenship. Since coming to office, Madam Secretary, your Government has regularized the status of thousands of foreign nationals in your country, some whom I am certain are Barbadians with less years in your country than this Guyanese lady has in Barbados. I seriously think that your President should rethink his administration’s association with Barbados and its uncouth and inhumane immigration practices since in my humble opinion they fly in the face of human rights and natural justice.

Madam Secretary, I think I have said enough to convince you that the people of Barbados see absolutely no similarities between President Obama and our Prime Minister David Thompson. Indeed if there is a world leader that has any similarities to our Prime Minister it is the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Gordon Browne. They have both presided in the squandering of their country’s greatest assets and opportunities.

These are truly interesting times in the Caribbean but let nothing I have said above convey the untruth that we in Barbados are a lost people. Amidst all this doom and gloom there is great hope. On the political horizon there is a Prime Minister in the waiting. She has a fine intellect, she is visionary and compassionate, she is a regionalist and represents a party with a strong political legacy. She is Mia Amor Mottley. I am certain by your next visit to our beautiful shore she will be leading this great nation of ours.

  1. What a load of codswallop, bunkum; no comparison between BIM and US.
Royalrumble: Are you of sound mind, are you of this world? It is easy to see where you are coming from; not Mars have you?
There is no difference from the DLP and BLP; period.
You told us the BLP left 2. billion in reserve, but have failed to tell us how much is owed and to whom.
Barbados is owned by non Barbadians, most of it given away by the administration you purport to worship. Our family silver has been given away never to return for our future generation.
What’s left of our arable land is lying idle, until the next man with big ideas to match his ego comes along and covers it in concrete. Why is this land not producing much needed produce?
Our dollar has been kept artificialy high at the expense of the pound, where most visitors to our shores come from and are willing to spend some needed cash.
A party where every member looks after himself and his friends, forgetting those who gave him that position.
At the end of the last election, every Barbadian had had enough, the main reason it is now in opposition.
Lets look at the party in power!
Progressive ideas in its manifesto, ‘a ploy’ to get elected; now happy to wallow in deceit, in the hope that all will be forgotten at the next ‘point of call’. Promises, promises; almost 3 years down the line it is impossible to see any change, except that the entire cabinet have gotten bigger around the waist. The same old, same old, all the same!
Bajans are supposed to be the best educated in the caribbean, yet happy to let the same old same, time and again.
Stop the silly gamesmanship and give the people what theyhave voted for.If you can’t deliver, don’t promise.
Stop the deceit….Royal Rumble: It is clear to see where your heart lies.

  2. Oh dear, why are the good folks on BU avoiding this THREAD*….

I know it is not election time in BIM* yet – and somehow there is this feel of a party political broadcast for the Barbados Labour Party…

Understandably, we all have axes to throw (sorry grind) – I keep getting that muddled!!! Forgive me!!!

However, let it be told that BIM* is in the same “KAKA* as the US – the only difference is, one land mass is larger than the other, so the issues are more compounded…

    @ROYALRUMBLE

“Indeed if there is a world leader that has any similarities to our Prime Minister it is the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Gordon Browne. They have both presided in the squandering of their country’s greatest assets and opportunities…”

Can we then assume from the above that just as George Bush left a similar legacy as Gordie* that Cameron will soon be able to be compared to OBAMA* as he attempts to clean the mess left by the previous government and can we safely deduce that the “POLYTRICKS” of “BOOM & BUST” is something that is inherently etched into the fabric of modern democratic socialist capitalism where there is an expected and decisive end based on what has already been laid down in the original architecture?

    Food for thought!!!

You Royal Ass, Obama is the only leader in the world with the luxury of being able to print money to pay bills… America does not have to work to pay its bills. Did someone not teach you this in primary school…?

    Go away

Well you are not an ass you are just the hole. You have completely lost the point I have made. If I wanted to debate debt and the solutions to debt I would have done that. I SPOKE TO THE INABILITY OF THIS DLP TO DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING ABOUT THE CRIPPLING STATE OF THE BARBADOS ECONOMY.

If Obama is printing money to solve the economic problems in the USA then that is good for him. At lease he is doing something. What is Thompson and the DLP doing to solve our economic problems here in Barbados?

Since coming to office the DLP has borrowed Bds $1.6 billion and still borrowing. What are assets being created by as a result of this high level of borrowing? BAFBFP if you are going to criticize me then offer some alternative. Put something on the table for discussion.

  5. Well I be the hole. Madame Sec cannot help you. You cannot compare the US with anyone else, particularly Barbados.. These people do not play by the same rules as everyone else. Obama is no saint. You prefer to wear blinkers. Fine, makes you a blinkered ass

  6. Does this idiot even realize that Hillary is a puppet for the Illuminati..do u even know the fullness of what is going on Globally…….do u think she gives a f**k about u or the piece of shit article you wrote…Hillary is all for a white(JEW) controlled world u idiot..she cares nothing for black people u ass….some people have the net and just don’t use it to its full potential.

  7. BAFBFP writes “Well I be the hole. Madame Sec cannot help you. You cannot compare the US with anyone else, particularly Barbados.. ”

Are you for f**king real? It is I who said that Thompson cannot be compared to Obama nor Barbados to America as Hartley Henry is suggesting in his article. Go and read his article clowns.

You jackasses are cursing me for making the very point you all are making. So guests what just f**k off bitches get some intellect and come again.

  8. sorry that should “guess”.

  10. Politics will be politics it is not exactly a new practice, the only way anything will change is if the people with whom the power of the vote lies decide that their power does not end after the new party gets elected and until the next election but that they can decide whether or not during the course of a term to bring it to the attention of government albeit however they can that an economic relief policy needs to be implemented beyond the subsidisation of major industries in terms of only retaining employment but rather let this filter down through to the financial instituitions as well. Yes Barbados is small, but there are practical measures that can be implemented.

  11. An Incompetent and Uncaring DLP Betrays the Youth of Barbados

In its 2008 Youth Manifesto, the Democratic Labour Party said: “In Barbados we have a situation in which some young people find themselves adrift after 11-12 years of compulsory education.

The cost of living, rising on a daily basis, makes it difficult to satisfy basic needs; Our tertiary educational Institutions can only accommodate a limited number of secondary school leavers who are desirous of continuing their formal education. There is inadequate access to employment opportunities by persons seeking their first job. Barbados needs to provide better opportunities for young people to realize their potential.”

All of that accurately describes the Barbadians society under DLP rule – but having already launched a Youth Manifesto in 2008 – in which it said: “This Manifesto is therefore a Contract between this great Party and the young people of Barbados,” and that: “This is our promise to you…and we intend to begin delivering from 16th January,” and having not delivered as promise, it cannot be as simple as the DLP now holding a FETE and a re-launch of its original launch.

As is the case with its so-called constituency reporting, the DLP cannot show any progress on behalf of young people. This is cold betrayal and yet another DLP broken promise.

The cost of living is now much higher than it was when the DLP promised young people that it will bring it down for them. Secondly, not only has the number of places at tertiary institution not been increased as promised by the DLP – but not satisfied that it has caused enough harm and pain to young people – the DLP cut the vote to the University of the West Indies (UWI) by some $52 million in this year’s Estimates.

Where are the employment opportunities for young people the DLP promised to provide? How can the DLP have any job creation plan for the youth when it told them that they are too qualified; that this DLP Government cannot provide work for them and that they should set up their own business? How exactly is the DLP helping young people to find their first job when it has pushed the economy so close to the edge of the cliff?

Why would this incompetent DLP Government betray the trust and confidence placed in it by the young people of Barbados by increasing fees and taxes on their parents – thousands of whom it also caused to be on the bread line? But it got worse! The DLP then increased land tax and petroleum prices and water rates by 60%. The Commissioner of Police is now saying that so far for the year there has been more crime than for all of 2009, which was bad?

Imagine! Two and a half years after telling young people that it will hit the ground running on their behalf – the DLP is now holding a fete- instead of explaining why it has not kept its promise to the young people of this country. I say to young people—having been betrayed, you must now punish the DLP and hold it accountable!

    @Hog Squeal

Very accurate and to the point. I believe the Dems will be held accountable and found wanting. There just is no drive for a bunch of politicians most in their first term in Parliament. Seems as though they are overawed by the gravity that good governance demands. Well said. By the way, Hartley Henry appears to becoming even more trivial and self-aggrandising. I wonder if his ego will be part of the accountability and transparency.

  13. OK OK… the path that your piece appeared to be taking forced an unwarranted response. Man you need to chose a better writing style, one that would encourage a reader to read the script through to the end. But still any attempt that at the outset appears to praise the US and criticise a Caribbean government will always get me rancid.. I know I should say sorry, but this cussing did a whole lot of good… for me thnx
