The fuss caused by the Swine Flu Pandemic has abated. Many accused BU and some commenters of being conspiracy theorists, given our published view on this matter.  Now many maybe forced to eat crow in the light of recent reports. Let us be reminded the World Health Organization (WHO) felt compelled to raise the Pandemic Alert to 6 (Phase 6 is the highest warning level that indicates a pandemic capable of widespread human infection). Poor and developing countries followed the advice of WHO and expended scarce resources at the peak of a global recession to stockpile the Swine Flu (H1N1) vaccine.  Reports indicate many countries around the world are dumping excess supplies of the stuff.

Last month a German Magazine released a report which confirmed that “in mid-May, about three weeks before the swine flu was declared a pandemic, 30 senior representatives of pharmaceutical companies met with WHO Director-General Chan and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon at WHO headquarters.

The vaccine industry was mainly interested in one question: the decision to declare phase 6. Phase 6 acted as a switch that would allow bells on the industry’s cash registers to ring, risk-free, because many pandemic vaccine contracts had already been signed. Germany, for example, signed an agreement with the British firm GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in 2007 to buy its pandemic vaccine — as soon as phase 6 was declared.”

Hopefully Barbados Government authorities will use commonsense next time around and resist the call by Big Pharma to line their pockets with our hard-earned foreign currency.

In related health news, our favourite  Journal of the American Medical Association released the results of a new study which concluded that a diet heavy in added sugar is linked to elevated triglyceride levels and may increase your risk for a heart attack… researchers at Emory University found that individuals who consume large amounts of added sugar have lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels and higher triglyceride levels than individuals who eat less of the sweet stuff.

    We are discussing two differnent things here.

    Let us assume that you are correct i.e.many of the vaccines/drugs are harmful, we still have to deal with the protocols employed by the healthcare system which most if not all countries have procedurized. This is where you need to locate your argument. Remember laws are often enacted to make it illegal not to take certain vaccines. If the establishment departs from the protocols there is the legal implication of doing such. It is why home schooling has become so popular with certain groups.

    Maybe the Rastas got it right after all, stay natural man!

    No learning or understandng is going on here.
    as MME has posited there was no way to predict the morbidity amd mortality of the swine flu when the outbreak occured in Mexico. The world was fortunate that the flu abated.

    Since treatment of viral illneses is poor since viruses control the metabolic machinery of its hosts, then prevention by vaccination was the best way of handling the epidemic known to mankind.
    Since 1950 vaccinatios have a proven tract record in the preventipn of viral illneses.

    In contrast certain posters on BU seem to have a proven tract record of talking shite.
    The damned fool rok suggests that protocols should be democratically determined. by jackasses like he?

    The protocols have worked in the past no doubt and will no doubt work again.
    Nothing is wrong with the protocols much may be wrong with the men that practice the protocols in our contemporary corrupt world.

    Now we here that we should be natural like the rastas.

    David can you tell us how the protocols employed by the healthcare system are procedurized in countries?

    In which countries are laws are often enacted to make it illegal not to take certain vaccines ROKLAND?
    What is the association with home schooling and the topic under consideration.

    Doc GP himself has confirmed that our HCP have to follow the protocols set by WHO, PAHO and other and we can bray like jackasses it will make no difference.

    Every individual should have the right to determine whether to vaccinate themselves and their children. But no individual should have the right to undermine the quality of life and health of their neighbours. I am not saying that all vaccines are necessary or even advisable in every circumstance, but many are responsible for the improved life expectancy of our species over the past century (about 30 years added to the average human life span in the past 100 years alone)… yes freewilly, how dare those damn Illuminati… conspiring to increase the average life span of humans… those bastards! LOL

    Cuddear… one need only spend a few minutes reading up on diseases like smallpox, diptheria, polio, Hib etc. It saddens me that some parents would needlessly expose their children (and by extension society) to the possible resurgence of these diseases by refusing to immunize their children against them.

    Fear is a funny thing… it is obviously necessary for survival… which accounts for natural selection’s shaping and preservation of the amygdala (right GP? LOL), but we need to guard against the destructive and often crippling effect of irrational fear.

    In my opinion, this presents a very balanced view of the subject. I know it wont settle the debate for everyone, but it should equip many who don’t fully understand the issues and risks with the information they need to make wise choices.

    By the way the reason there was not a mass pandemic Not Amused is because people are waking up to the fact that the Elite are trying to kill them off slowly but surely and that the vaccine itself caused Swine Flu,therefore there would have been a mass pandemic if people had really went out in the millions and foolishly took the vaccine,don’t forget that genius just like the seasonal flu shot in the US it makes you sick first before it fights off the flu right??,but know it all brainwashed pussies like you would want me to roll up my sleeve right???

    David… I agree that greed (although I would prefer to say ‘profit’) fuels ‘Big Pharma’ business… it fuels most businesses in capitalist societies. But what evidence are you using to support your argument that this has been to the detriment of countries like Barbados. When I compare the quality of health care and concomitant mortality rates in Barbados today with that of Barbados, say 50 years ago, I reach a different conclusion. What metrics are you using?

    I support the calls for better regulation, but, quite frankly, I am more concerned about Big ‘New-Age’ Medicine and Bad Science than I am about Big Pharma… they are doing far more damage to the welfare of society.

    You asked what yardstick we are using. While you are using mortality rate as the measure a better place to look maybe in the stat which says Barbados has one of the highest non communicable disease rates in the world.

    Yes, yes the scope of the discussion has been widened but this is where we are in this matter, confused as hell!

    I don’t dispute that we have a major problem with non communicable disease, but what does this have to do with ‘Big Pharma’? In my opinion we need to stop looking for ‘people in the shadows’ to blame and start taking responsibility for our lifestyles and diets.

    Absolutely correct. I saw this review of a dish at one of the restaurants frequented by many people from the Caribbean and was astonished at the high level of sodium in the meal. This dish is similar to many served in Bajan homes and eating establishments so I’m confident that if the same analysis was carried out with those dishes the result would be the same.

    Meanwhile hypertension and diabetes rates continue to rise to historic levels.

I hope you have noted the credentials of these 2 gentlemen . The name Robert Gallo is also mentioned , I believe he is the guy that was involved in the development of the AIDS test .     … I had a hard time following the line of argument after that.

    Also, thanks for the link to Dr. Viera Sheibner’s work. There appears to be some good information presented there… particularly relating to adverse reactions to vaccines… but this is overshadowed some shoddy, unscientific work and poor conclusions (an alternative resource for information in this area which I highly recommend, is CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System – VAERS: http://vaers.hhs.gov/index)

    In my opinion, Sheibner’s crusade against vaccinations does more harm than good… if you haven’t watched the PBS documentary I linked above, I encourage you to do so. I suspect that if Dr. Sheibner had pursued health sciences/medicine rather than geology for her PhD, she may have been better equipped for this sort of research.

    I have “gut feelings” that “I” trust regarding the children’s medicines AND the financial reform bill having new laws that are against natural suppliments. And when I first read these headlines…I felt like I better stock up on these health aids.
    So, anyway, I’ve admitted to being a conspiracy realist, I do not know or understand EVERYTHING, so I’m sure to sound stupid at times like these with so many questions… The evil is uncomprehendable which is why many of us sound crazy in relation to our research on things like the swine flu.
    I have an important question for any Barbadian willing to answer but don’t want to start the subject here.
    If anyone is willing to answer my question on a different “conspiracy” of great concern to me, … may have your Facebook or email address to ask it privately?

    A. In my opinion the so called children’s medicine that has been pulled from the shelves in the USA, ought never to have been there at all!

    It is very common to see in US supermarkets and corner shops etc selling over the counter a lot of medicines that we in Barbados or in Britain CAN NOT obtain except by prescription and for very good reason. Such medicine is designated POMR. There is a lot of Rx sold over the counter in the US that have serious potential side effects.

    The so called children’s medicine that has been pulled from the shelves include a drug designed well over 30 years ago to better aspirin. At that time it was not indicated for use in children. In fact giving it to children was an expressed contraindication. I was surprised in recent times that the manufacturers have been trying to perhaps capture some of the paracetamol (acetaminophen) market as aspirin is not usually given to children for fear of Reyes syndrome.

    I would hope that our doctors and pharmacists were not giving or selling the removed drugs in Bimshire!

    We should have nothing to fear if we are sticking to paracetamol (acetaminophen) i.e Panadol, paramol cetamol etc in this age group—as long as they don’t take an overdose. (But I have never heard of such in Bim.)

    Whereas Pharmaceutical companies like all other businesses is motivated by profit, I doubt very much that they are not weary of being a detriment to others. As in the case cited above they probably reduced the dose as much as possible. Most Pharmaceutical companies are competing often for the same market. Once the period for the patent of their drug is up, or until another company makes a suitable alternative to the patented drug Pharmaceutical companies are in serious competition. Usually this results in better and safer drugs being made. Hence ranitidine has superceded cimetidine, and all the beta blockers have replaced propanolol to a large extent etc.

    Since Barbados is far from being a “less developed country” as far as our medical personnel and practices are concerned, it is not easy for overseas Pharmaceutical companies to dump bad drugs in Barbados. The Drug Service directors and advisors do a reasonable job in seeing that safe drugs even though the PROTOCOLS they use in coming to their decisions are not DEMOCRATIC! Although I am sure that certain BU posters would love to decide this matter- despite the fact that they are definitely not qualified to do so.

    You cant blame overseas Pharmaceutical companies for drug problems in Bim. Even if a drug is available in Barbados, the companies still have to get their Drug rep or salespersons to convince or persuade the doctor to write their preparations. In the US, I notice that the Drug rep or salespersons don’t even seem to get in to see the doctor. I guess the patient does the persuading, based on the extremely expensive ads seen on tv in which the patient is told to “Ask your doctor about X or Y or Z

    Finally, note that MME is correct in using mortality rate as the measure of health status rather than the stat of non communicable disease rates.

    One the subject of protocols and democracy in medicine and healthcare as raised by the jackass of highest rank who brays on BU persistently about things of which he knows nothing!

    Here is one example why there is no “democracy” in the making of such protocols which are designed both to benefit the patient and to safe guard the patient.

    When I was a student and a young doctor, the protocol for treating an acute case of asthma was to give aminophyline and hydrocortisone according to the patient’s body weight intravenously and then follow this by a drip containing aminophyline and hydrocortisone.

    This was certainly to me one of the marvels and miracles of medicine , because by the time you gave that shot by slow intravenous push the patient would visibly be seen to have improved markedly.

    I used to like to give my patients the suppositories to use as outpatients. They told me this drastically reduced their visits to QEH casualty at nights. I did this until the suppositories became unavailable.

    Now what is the protocol today? Do doctors need a braying BU donkey to set up the protocol so that it can be democratic?

    Today the large doses of hydrocortisone used have been replaced by giving topical steroids by inhalation and nebulization. How does this benefit the patient? Much less steroid is used, and they don’t have to worry about slowly weaning off the steroid. In fact they are persuaded to use their steroid inhaler as a prophylactic, because not only is the dose of steroid very low, but it is delivered directly to the site of action, without passing through the liver.

    By not using aminophyline today the aim is to circumvent the possible cardiac side effects of this drug. Is using aminophyline safe? Off course…….and fast too! But the protocol; is skewed towards reducing the quantity of steroid given to the patient, and in reducing the chance of cardiac complications. Tell me which of you want the doctors to rely on BU’s braying jackass to set up the protocol so that it can be democratic? How would the medical illiterate know which of the multiplicity of new drugs indicated for treating asthma to use?

    Now you can argue that aminophyline is far cheaper especially in safe hands! Also aminophyline was peculiar in that children tolerated higher doses than adults per body weight!

    I must note that my note above referred mainly to Motrin . But I now note in todays Nation that Tylenol (same as Panadol) has been recalled for primarily packaging reasons.

    Interesting to note who are the importers. Are these not so called local manufacturers of drugs? Why is it that BU posters dont go after them? Is it because they do not understand what is going on? LOL!

    Permit me to respond to a selection of sane sober sensible sayings you have made in the last 4 days or so.

    1 You are clearly correct in pointing out that “Fortunately the mortality rate of swine flu turned out to be low.” If it was the braying donkeys on this thread would be singing a different song.
    2 You are also again clearly correct in opining that “ there was no way to predict …. from the start” that the mortality of the swine flu pandemic would have been low, or that the pandemic would have been aborted so quickly.

    3 In the light of the initial very high mortality rate experienced in Mexico where the first outbreak occurred, and due to the apparent high infectious rate of the virus , I must asgree with you 100 % that the precautions taken by public health officials around the globe were appropriate. Hopefully they will continue to err on the side of caution as they were trained to do in any subsequent pandemics, and not try to please their critics WHO ARE CLEARLY NEITHER MEDICALLY TRAINED OR PUBLIC HEALTH TRAINED.

    4 Re the “most destructive ‘creatures’ in the future of mankind will be computer viruses.” This is quite interesting, and a possible and likely contributor to the melt down when Babylon falls as predicted in Revelation 18.
    5. I agree with you also that there are two many morons around looking for ‘people in the shadows’ to blame rather than taking responsibility for our lifestyles and diets.
    6 Again you are correct …. Every individual should have the right to determine whether to vaccinate themselves and their children. But no individual should have the right to undermine the quality of life and health of their neighbours.
    Surely, there is no harm in having DPT and MMR vaccines. Surely these vaccines have proven their worth since there advent 60 years ago.

    I agree with you that judgement should be exercised so that vaccines are not used unnecessarily or advisable in every circumstance.
    7 It can not be denied that the use of DPT & MMR is responsible for the improved life expectancy of our species over the past 60 years. Certain vaccines drastically improved and continue to improve the infant mortality rate. This is so despite the barking and braying by the medical illiterates in this matter.

    8 It is not only saddening but most reprehensible and disturbing that some parents would needlessly expose their children (and by extension society) to the possible resurgence of these diseases by refusing to immunize their children against them.

    The sad thing is that when these children turn up ill, doctors will have to waste valuable time treating these children that should be spent on other children who are ill.

    9 You are again correct that there has over the last 60 years a great improvement in the
    quality of health care and concomitant decrease in the mortality rates in Barbados. There has also in the same time period a great improvement in every health index.

    10 I also share your sentiment about BAD SCIENCE and Big Pharma. The quantity and quality of useful pharmaceuticals have all improved significantly in the last 60 years and continue to do so.

    What do you know about so called NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS? How do they work? Have their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics been worked out and presented to you. As well as their indications and contraindications. How much of the preparation you have bought contains the correct quantity of “natural” substance?

    I would like to thank you for your brief but pertinent and poignant points on this thread.
    I must agree with you Sir/Madam. And you certainly asked some relevant questions that still have not been answered…………and understandably so.

    1- It is indeed true that the ignorance of the subject matter demonstrated by of some of the posters on this blog abounds
    2- No learning or understandng is going on here.
    3 As MME has posited there was no way to predict the morbidity and mortality of the swine flu when the outbreak occurred in Mexico. The world was fortunate that the flu abated.
    4 Since treatment of viral illnesses is poor since viruses control the metabolic machinery of its hosts, then prevention by vaccination was the best way of handling the epidemic known to mankind.
    5 Since 1950 vaccinations have a proven tract record in the prevention of viral illnesses.
    6. Medical protocols are well designed and intended to protect patients and give clear directions of how doctors should act at any particular time. You are correct in asserting that “The protocols have worked in the past no doubt and will no doubt work again.”
    7. You are also correct in opining that “Nothing is wrong with the protocols much may be wrong with the men that practice the protocols in our contemporary corrupt world.”
    8 It is unreasonable to think that WHO send out diseases and then vaccines to combat them as soon as they pop up
    9 I agree with you also that some posters on BU seem to cerebrate not with thier brains, but with a more remote anatomical location, and that some have “a proven tract record of talking” bovine excrement..
    10 I agree also that medical protocols should not be democratically determined. by jackasses, and that all professions have relevant protocols.
    11. I agree also that medical protocols do not support big business and that they are not economic controls economic controls

Having myself been taught by the late Sir Maurice Byer, and the late Frank Ramsey and having met and worked with some of his pioneering public health nurses and public health officials, and heard their interesting stories, I can attest to the fact that “all the public health protocols that transformed Barbados from a cholera ridden place in the 1930′s” to what it has become today actually did not cost very much. We owe a great debt to Byer and the programmes he set in place and his able public health inspectors.

    In fact Dr Ramsey had to fight Government to implement much of the things he was able to do that resulted in the drastic reduction of the infant mortality rate. His protocols were definitely not democratically determined!

    13. Finally, it seems that no one can “answer any of the reasonable and relevant questions” you have asked or “bring anything of real substance to the table.” This is because they DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT NOR DO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY READ IN ALL THE LINKS THEY ARE POSTING. You on the other hand seem to know about Public Health and its history in Barbados.

    Note also how little it costs to stop the cholera out break then.

    Note the cost savings that accrued in Bangladesh by vaccination against one disease- small pox.

    Note the importance of Epidemiologic Surveillance and Outbreak Management

    In the USA the CDC is the first responder for interstate outbreaks, but Intrastate by invitation. The State health departments are responsible withing their respective states.
    Such survelillance is considered the foundation of disease control
     Passive surveillance
    – Reporting on a routine basis
    – Your responsibility
     Active surveillance
    – Public health officials initiate contact
     Baseline data
    – Facilitates detection of changes in disease trends and occurrence

    If you follow this ppt you will see the responsibility that the Public Health Dept of a country etc has in dealing with an out break of any disease, and this whether they are morons amoungst its citizens who do not think that there is a disease, or it is a scam.

    When the Public Health officials of our country and TRAINED EXPERIENCED PERSONNEL IN THE WORLD ARE/WERE DOING THEIR JOBS, morons who clearly do not know ANYTHING about either protocol;s or proceddures are spouting bovine excrement!

    This ignorance amongst our so called educated population is most horrifying. And when folk in positions of “leadership” lead the group it is even more disgusting.

    I hope that some readers will take the time to appreciate the difficulty that Public Health officials have in dealing with these matters.
