La citadelle (Haiti)

The earth trembled and people who were already poor felt its fury.ย  Haiti was in the news again, the good stories from that place rest only in the hearts of their ancestors. Nations responded, it is true, from near and far the willing came.ย  There were planes loaded with supplies and concerned Governments sent parcels, medical items and the expertise of their sons and daughters.

Then incaution was thrown to the wind and someone said they – Haitians – were paying for their pact withย  the devil/satan; retribution was being unleashed for their satanic practices.ย  God in his wisdom had demonstrated his power.

Dare I ask, or should I stay silent?ย  but I will ask, was this the same God who was not concerned – or did not demonstrate – over the millions of black slaves who were shackled, did he turn away from those whose gnarled bodies felt the lash, or who for hundreds of years knew no mercy.ย  Why did he not vent his wrath on Nations, Governments and countries who filled their larders and built edifices from the labour of slaves?

Why was he selective, to only make the earth tremble under the feet of those who invaded no foreign lands, took no mother’s sons away from far away places and broke them under the lash.ย  When the “Rev” whose name is best forgotten, tells us of the sins the Haitians have committed and therefore retribution…I ponder.

I must ask where is the justice? are certain principles selectively employed, retribution selectively dispensed, can you be punished for a lesser evil whilst a greater evil goes unnoticed?

I will enslave you, wrench you from the bosom of your flesh, stamp you as a herd of horses, dishonour you, own your off spring and even your soul.ย  Dare you fight to regain even a modicum of dignity, it is you who have transgressed.ย  Even if I do not level with you, God will punish you, because you have made a pact with the devil.

There are Devils and there are Devils but if there are really Devils, someone grant me the wisdom to know who they are, and give me an ear to know the sounds they make, so that when they speak in the name of their God, I will know them; so that I may ponder and hopefully be wiser after my contemplation.

I ask the questions “only” because I do not know; to those who do, I beseech you; tell me.

  7. No simple answers to you Yardbroom, but consider the confusion Haiti had from the start.

La Citidelle (see photo) was built by Henri Christophe using the “fermage” system of labour.

He also built, or rather his “fermage system” built a palace for him, Sans Souci.

At the time Haiti was divided between himself and Petion.

He held the North and Petion the south.

The two of them took over from Dessalines when he was assasinated in 1806, just 2 years after the Declaration of Independence.

Petion negotiated with the French and in 1809 agreed to pay France to recognise Haiti’s independence.

Not much France could really have done as the Napoleonic War was raging and the only place Napoleon was headed for was Waterloo via Mocow.

He created another hell on earth in Russia.

Christophe decided to barricade himself in his citidel if attacked by France … or Petion.

He needn’t have worried about France as Nelson had destroyed what was left of the French fleet after the Battle of the Nile (1798) at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

In 1825, 10 years after the war had ended, Jean Pierre Boyer who took power from Christophe in 1820 signed off on the 150 million francs France demanded for recognition ….

….. and remained Haiti’s leader till 1842 when the earthquake which destroyed Cap Hatien and Sans Souci created such hardship that revolt was inevitable.

He then went to France …. into exile where he died in 1850.

Mankind is quite capable of creating hell on earth with no help from any devils.

Take a look at the work of fiction titled “The Kingdom of this World” by Alejo Carpentier.

…… and be careful how you go around looking for someone to show you the devil ……

You might just find him, or he will find you.

….. just my old fashioned Bajan feeling.

Sir Frank Collymore in his book “Bajan Dialect” defines the usage of the term “France” as follows:

“Often used as a mild expletive, as “Go to France” or “What the France you think you doing?” Most likely a legacy from the Napoleonic wars.”

Unlike Richard Alsop, he did not even consider the hell of the First World War in France, …..

….. probably because he was around at the time of WWI and found Bajans using France as they used it before the First World War.

Unfortunately both men are deceased and we will never know for sure.

I probably made some errors in the rough history outline above (relying on memory) but I am sure I will be corrected.

  8. John when you speak of Bajans before adult suffrage, please label them appropriately so that there can be no confusion. For the above I am sure you are referring to white Bajans. Tell you what John, label them anyway, pre or post still white Bajansโ€ฆ same blasted tโ€™ingโ€ฆ!

  9. Dear David:

Pat Robertson or whatever his name is is an idiot. Plain and simple.

  10. And Chavez is an idiot too.

I suppose that the U.S. caused the earthquake that destroyed Port Royal, just a few miles west of last Tuesday’s earthquake too?

Oh shoot!!! I forgot the U.S. did not exist in 1692.

  11. Chavez being an enemy of the US would say anthing to discredit them . Now can he prove it.
Like i say opinions are like as-hole ever
body has one. What has his buddy Castro
have to say even he has more sense than
    that.

  12. Up the ante with the corcupporehea situated cruicially beyond the trandantosphere of the top level situation that is concomittanly guarded as rein deck the puntry .

  13. When I read about the origin of the phrase โ€œPact with Satanโ€ I think about a defeated nation that didnโ€™t have an explanation for its defeat by what they would have seen mostly as a bunch of illiterate and uncultured savages who had just arrived from the โ€œDark Continentโ€. Back when slaves were fighting for their freedom in Haiti, France was a leading European power and it was inconceivable for them to have lost a war to those whom they regarded as inferiors. It would be a convenient excuse to claim that the slaves had enlisted the help of โ€œthe devilโ€ to ensure victory. It was not unheard of in Europe to claim that desirable or undesirable outcomes were caused by of โ€œgood or evil spiritsโ€.

The history of a conflict is usually recorded by the victors not the vanquished; the Haitians didnโ€™t write the history of this war, it was recorded by a Frenchman (Antoine Dalmas). One shouldnโ€™t be surprised that Dalmas would write what he believed would find favour in France, that it should find favour in subsequent years with others should not be a surprise to anyone who has studied any history of African people.

    I agree with you 100%.

  16. The fault line in Haiti runs straight to France

The earthquakeโ€™s destruction has been aggravated not by a pact with the Devil, but by the crippling legacy of imperialism

Even if ac done talkin’ tah me, you pulling de right stuff… ‘merica and France ain’ saints, dey have always had and still have globalist agendas and ‘merica in particular got MOTIVE, OPPURTUNITY and WHEREWITHALL (not to mention a history) to pull this off. ac the US should be discreditted, my God, what would it take…?

  19. Dear John

With all dis suffering in the region, I could use lil’ Coherence… please…!

  20. @BAFBFP
Let’s puthistory in perspective here .Yes america is no angel I’ll give you that , but
at the same time at this point and time haiti is very weak and unstable military and outside america who else would you prefer to be taking charge.

  22. Is it possible for the sons and daughters of slaves; and those who were colonised by Europeans to separate themselves from their old masters? Certainly those who hail from the Caribbean have the blood of the Europeans running through their veins; and a โ€œsharedโ€ history.

Those of us of African descent need to take โ€œtime-outโ€; reflect on our past and plan our future.

I believe that as a people we are doomed if we continually remain attached to the โ€œEuropeanโ€ and any other ethnic group. Complete separation is what we require, but is it an achievable goal?

We marvel at the โ€œsolidityโ€ of the โ€œEuropeanโ€; however their source of richness evolved from acts of illegality and certainly a complete void of morality. Oh the sins of our African brothers!

What we require is an alternative philosophy that will take us out of this system.

Is it possible for those of us of African origin (putting aside religion) to act as one universal block? What should our relationship be with those other groups who live amongst us?

I believe that the โ€œEuropean and othersโ€ are the serpents within our garden and should be cast out.

  23. @BAFBFP
It is for the Haitian people to tell america
to leave .If america decides that i will occupy Haiti as it has done in other
countries i would be the first to decry such actions. However my question to you is :Who would you prefer at this time to be taking control of the present situation.
my dear mi casa su casa

  24. No X-MAN … NO!

Amounts White people, even White people from Ba’bados you will find the worst and most depraved of humankind, but you will also find the best that the world has to offer..! These people come in extremes. The thing is to expose the bad, the shites amounts them, and there are many, many, many and work with the good. Unfortunately for Black people the only ones coughed up as leaders and earmarked as good leaders, are (were) those who have(have had) a history of sucking up to White people. To rid ourselves of Whites (good and bad) and be stuck with these mindless nincompoops is really not what we want is itโ€ฆ?

  25. @X-man
Yes Siree ! but in the meantime we don’t as a collective people have the military might to confront them if not we would end up like Haiti. We are not fools by nowmost of us knows our history.Case andpoint you are still living under their
influence like the rest of us .However getting allof us together in unity is going to be hard .The dividing force is what we
were taught in slavery and one that is hard to break.

  26. ac

“If America decides that it will occupy Haiti as it has done in other countries I would be the first to decry such actions..” but it already HAS…! ‘mericans OWNS Haiti now (truth is they have owned it and it’s exploitative political, middle and upper classes for generations) The entity that you refer to as “The Haitian People” the spineless clowns that for the past eight years or so who claim to speak on behalf of the “Haitian People” are ‘merican installed puppets.. you must know this..!

As to who I prefer to run things? Well Haiti could use a good dose of Socialism of it is to have any chance at surviving over the next twenty yearsโ€ฆ Raul and Hugo to the rescue.. my flower..!

  27. To ac and other non-believers ..have you guys ever heard of HAARP..you better look them up and see what that company has to offer..i for 1 can’t denounce Chavez on what he is accusing them of..because i know off the wicked zionists that run Amerikkka.

  28. The Nation Group of Companies (subsid of OCM) is putting up the Grand Total of US (wait for it) 12,500.00 dollars… Divide that by four, and you get that STARCOM run by Vic Fernands, with a salary that exceeds US 10,000 /month, is putting up (wait for it) THREE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE dollars….! (How much good will profiling was derived from all this telethon foolishness?)

By the way LIME better known as Cable and Wireless, now a de-facto relative of Starcom, after a declared net profit of US 45 Million in Ba’bados alone, is putting up Zilch…!

Oh an’ Digicel is rebuldin’ its infrastructure as a donation to Haiti… give me a f#ckin’ break…!

  29. @BAFBFP

I hear what you are saying. Iโ€™m, simply, raising a debate that has to be conducted.

As a black man born and bred in Europe I am fed up of walking on egg-shells.

A sizeable majority of these Europeans have absolutely no idea of their terrible legacy or even which countries that their ancestors seized.

Being well travelled I have friends from various backgrounds. Would I like to say goodbye to them โ€“ certainly not. I have learnt much from white people over the years and have benefited from this acquaintance.

However our plight is so desperately bleak, that we have to be prepared to debate openly our future. Not to do so would be highly irresponsible.

  30. @BAFBFP
all the above you say is true. I am not going to defend america actions whenit
to comes to occupying a country .but as this pont and time i will agree with its policy of maintaining its present there until Haiti is stabilize.

    @BAFBFP
when we finish fighting we can always make up.smooch………………………….

  31. @Freewilly
I have alot of serious issue with america and its foreign policies over the years and its total lack of disrepect towards other countries and people who dare to disagree them. However on this situation
i am cutting the trees down in order to see the forest. my thinking is of my own and i am not influence in one way or
anther by others point of view. I see the situation as it is at this point and time.

    t

  32. Sorry ac but we got tah fight lil’ bit more… Dese people brek up de place. Chances are dis din’ even a act ah God…! Man as Black people we should ALL recognise this as seeing the forest! ‘merica ain’ on nah mercy mission…! De sooner official comments surface that demonstrate that Black leadership is onto them the better… REFUSE THEIR HELP…REFUSE WEAPONS! DEMAND that anything that they give in in repayment for what they have distroyed and of course they cannot give back the lives of the hundreds of thousands that they have taken. Surely at this point, Obama has to relinquish any lingering claim of being Black…!

  34. For those who live in the US, can you give the BU family a sense how how the US media responded to Pat Robertson’s vitriol? Did the media give a balanced response or was the news used by the media to sensationalize?

The point about Haiti and why many from especially Black backgrounds maybe offended at the heavy handedness on the ground in Haiti obviously strikes back to the chequered history the imperialists of old have played in that country. It is obvious US, France, UK and many who have caused much harm to Haiti must play a leading now but there is the sensitivity factor which they need to be mindful.

  35. @David

It is really difficult to be concerned with as you put it “the sensitivity factor” at this time.

Decisiveness is sometimes misconstrued as “heavy handedness”.
    The Military is “Decisive”.

The rescue effort in Haiti requires a swift response by specialist Search and Rescue teams.

    You need to:

    Find and save victims.

Give food, water, medical attention and temporary shelter to survivors.

    Maintain Law and order.

In the meanwhile the Surviving members of the Hatian Government should be working to restore Governance of their country and planning how they will rebuild Haiti.

They will need $Billions to rebuild. Let us hope the World community will be generous.

  36. Point taken Hants but there is something called PR.

  37. You are all fools if you believe that this is about restoring anything other continued subservience to ‘merican Government/private interests. For the moment it serves quite well as a media event that delivers compassion to an American audience. What “World community” whatโ€ฆ Hants shut upโ€ฆ!

  38. @ David….

I am in Crown Heights and as you know, Brooklyn has the highest % of Haitians in the US.
The whole nonsense with Pat caused a stir and seemed to be accepted by many until the Haitian Ambassador to the US had to come on air to give then a history lesson.

    http://jotman.blogspot.com/2010/01/haitian-ambassador-gives-pat-robinson.html

Given the fact that most young Americans dont even know their own geography, much less history, his statements which came via the gospel called the media (and by a preacher to boot) was gobbled up and believed as true.
Networks were running the clip at regular intervals until the lesson by the Haitian ambassador.
It is also sad to me the way the tragedy has been sensationalized by the major networks..CNN’s Anderson Cooper was shown “saving” a kid from being beaten by others for food. He jumped into action to pull the kid away from the mob, of course he looked like a hero then but I am sure it would have been a different story if the mob had injured or killed CNN’s poster boy. Another incident which got sensationalized is the Sanjay Gupta treating of the little girl, this was all over the networks constantly. His claim of being a doctor first and a reporter second rang hollow with me, I believe it was the other way around. Viewer rating for the Networks is big $$ here and they would do anything (exploit the situation) for ratings.
Yes, one can say I am being cynical but what good is all this chest beating doing for the Haitian people ?

  39. THIS IS OPEN WARFARE ON PEOPLE WITH MELANIN.

This is part of the beast plan to eliminate BLACK PEOPLE.

Today its HAITI tomorrow more of US.

This is TERROR against our bodies and upon our MINDS!

This assault on HAITI is an assault on MELANATED people.

  40. I reckon Chavez is out to sea but …..

….. don’t dismiss the possibility of earthquakes being man made.

Chinese scientists feel that man’s interference in nature is exactly what caused their’s.

Here is a link to the NY times.

I remember getting emails from Probe International when the Chinese earthquake occurred with exactly this suggestion in them.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/06/world/asia/06iht-06quake.19978278.html

There is hydropower in Haiti but from what I can find out the project dates from the 1930’s.

Anyone know anything about new initiatives to further dam the Antibonite Valley and whether they were brought to fruition?

Can find where Haitian farmers stopped the proposals in the 1980’s as up to 10,000 acres of agricultural land in the Haitian breadbasket would have been lost.

CIDA and IADB were the loan agencies and they backed off.

You have done your bit at providing information, though not opionions thus far on this topic. Then you write “I reckon Chavez is out to sea but โ€ฆ..” …

How you figga that…? You be a Neurologist?

  42. BAFBFP
    Not neurologist this time………psychiatrist!

    Neurologist for nerves

    Psychiatrist for the mind.

  43. Look all

About four years ago there was an event at the National Stadium with lots of entertainers (might have been the fortieth anniversary of independence) and near to the end there was an elaborate fireworks display. There was a low hanging cloud at the time. The rain poured, and I mean poured for the entire duration of the display and stopped just as the display came to an end. To my mind the organisers of the show proved that the weather can be manipulatedโ€ฆ.!

  44. I Stand corrected GP

  45. Thanks for the link Technician. We thank all countries for coming to the aid of Haiti, however Caribbean people must continue to be vigilant given the history of Haiti which validates concerns expressed by some. Black people will always have a perspective which is uniquely ours. Thanks to the Internet we have the Fifth Estate which the establishment cannot control.

  46. @David..

Black people will always have a perspective which is uniquely ours.

    I love this!!!

“But cuddear Yardie, couldn’t you just have made this comment on one of the other threads on Haiti…? or hmmm…maybe this is your dastardly attempt at steering the BU Trinity away from those threads…! (thnx)”

I can assure you I had no [dastardly] “mean and cowardly” intent. I wrote this submission to address a specific set of circumstances, taking account of a perspective held by some, of the reasons for the Haitians plight.

Further over the years I have “never” even once made any comment whatsoever to undermine, denigrate or in any way abuse; Dictionary Zoe or Dr. Georgie Porgie or the writings of the aforementioned, or you come to that; I never operate at that plane.

I often think it is futile to get angry, but it is wise to be thoughtful and so determine the best course of action for the future, only then we will prevail.

The plight of the Haitians is real and harrowing, in most part caused by a natural event, but to suggest as some have done it is their fault because – of pacts with the devil – is to bring a superficiality which is insensitive and untrue.

  49. I LOVE THE PEOPLE OF BARBADOS, FOR I SHOULD ONLY LOVE THAT WHICH IS A PART OF ME! I agree with X-Man, the good ole USA might have had something to do with it, or just let us say “the world powers” collectively!
