Les Scadding and his wife Samantha Peachey-Scadding celebrate their £45.5 million jackpot win
Click on image to follow the Mail Online story

Recently BU posted two blogs about the Bajan brand. What can we tell about the Bajan brand if we are to judge by the following comment made by the UK’s latest lottery winner Les Scadding of £45.5m?

The couple robustly insisted they would keep their feet on the ground and ‘think very carefully’ about what to do with the money after some instant indulgences. So far they include the first new car Les has ever ordered, a Range Rover Sport to replace his modest Citroen; and maybe a house in Sam’s favourite holiday destination, Barbados.

A good public relations company could turn this into a great win-win situation for Barbados.
Les being met by the Minister of Tourism at Grantley Adams before being carried away by a stretch limo.
Les enjoying his Pina Colada by a gorgeous pool at one of our leading hotels while he contemplates which property to buy (maybe Apes Hill).
ALL the images being recorded and made available to the worlds’s media.

A man worth over 45 million Pounds can choose to travel anywhere but he is thinking of his ‘favourite holiday destination – Barbados’

Lets hope someone runs with it!

  2. I think someone in government should be right now on the phone with this guy.

  3. This is quite simply an amazing story. In Europe we have a lottery called the Euro-lottery this means that a large number of European countries can take part. The prize money is usually very big. We heard the news on Saturday night that the winning tickets were purchased in the UK. Nobody came forward to claim their prize.

I believe that it was on the Tuesday when the winners came forward to make themselves known. Apart from this man the other “winners” was a syndicate of seven. Their age ranges are from 19-40? I believe that the head of the syndicate is 57. They live in a relatively impoverish area in the North-East of England called Sunderland.

All the winners were just ordinary working class people. Not any more!

They will soon be collecting individual cheques to the value of 6.5 million pounds. By the way all of them have now quit their jobs! Tell me does that not make you envious?

Good luck to the winner if he acquires his dream home in Barbados.

Concerning brand Barbados: they should encourage him and the other winners to emigrate to Barbados and allow him to bring in their money. Now that would be something.

  4. We have a mission in England, we would imagine this is something they would be on top of to earn their keep.

  5. Interesting story.

Last week a Native Canadian on a very poor reserve won $50 million on the Mega Max lottery. He spent his last $10 to buy the two tickets. He had recently suffered a stroke and now will get all the physio therapy he needs to get him using his left arm again. He still has problems walking, so this health is their priority. They plan to build their dream home right there on the reserve.

  6. Had this been a midnight BLACK Ghanian or Nigerian who had won this money and wanted to buy a house in Barbados, would they be calls for a stretched limousine, a loyal subject of the queen commanded to them at the airport or better yet given Apes Hill on a platter?

Would all these other negroes jump in with the same mantra?

Excuse me while I light my spliff
Oh gawd I gotta take a lift
From reality I just can’t drift
Take it easy! Take it easy!

  7. While very sweet stories…

I still believe (and can prove) that, overall, lotteries are a tax on those who are bad at maths….

  8. Let us see this for what it is, an opportunity for Barbados to project itself in a positive light.

  9. Somehow this positive light can only be shone in certain circles?

  10. @Hopi

BU stands behind our opinion on this story.

It is a feel good story at a time when little Barbados is dealing with alot of shit.

The reality is simple, we are a tourist destination, how can we make this work for us, many hungry Black mouths depend on it.

  11. The reason why there are many hungry Black mouths to feed is because we have been led and continue to allow ourselves to be led like sheep to graze on “dried up dead grass” and it looks like we won’t be going anywhere else soon. How much of those mils can feed those Black mouth and for how long? Is this what we have come to? Beggars?

  12. There is merit in what you are suggesting but as we fight to change we have to be pragmatic at the same time.

  13. 43 years and counting!

  14. Hopi if it was a black Nigerian or Ghanian, I believe you would at the airport, claiming to be a distant cousin so you could cash in…LMAO!!

  15. @Crossroads

I will bet you $s to doughnuts that a black Ghanian or Nigerian would go back to their home country. These people are patriotic and they would be Lords in their villages.

  16. @Crossroads………..Hahaha. I’m LMAO too! You are a geniass boy! How you figure dat out so quick?

Yes because HOPI would have seen the benefits there in and lobby government, just the same as BU and others are doing in this instance.

If not, HOPI would be no better than than those he seeks to condemn.

  18. Hi!

Talking about the “Bajan Brand!” have you seen today’s (11/12/09) Nation Online with the Barbados Passport on the front. I made this post there earlier.

“I would think this was a perfect time to “Run Out” of this inventory batch since a change in this cover has to be in order. I can see a whole lot wrong with this picture.

There is a saying here in the United States, “You can fly any flag here on your flag pole, but “OLD GLORY” has got to be on top.

The word “Barbados” has got to be on top, if it is a “Barbados Passport” and must be “Bigger” than the CC “Logo”.

After all, it is a Barbados passport! Any takers!”

  19. Dmarlehole.. As you can see we bajans are ready to prostitute ourselves for the lile scratch grain these people will bring, you will also see us bajans kissing arse, and i don’t know if this is what one will call making the brand count ,what i would like to see at the GA. I. A is a big sign BARBADOS welcome home all sons and daughters of this fair pleasant land,I am in no doubt that these bajan people would have sold the brand Barbados better than any one time winner of the lotto who will keep the bulk of their money in the uk,apart from the lile bit they will give to the yard boy and lie money for maid who will be cleaning their s**t room

  20. @Adrian Hinds……………..Who am I condemning? Had Hopi been running things in Barbados at this stage in our history we would not be beggars. And for sure we would not be dependent on tourism. And the Royal-BlueCarpet would have been laid out long, long before one of them won a lotto. And there won’t be no exclusive Apes Hill for them to contemplate buying, simply because BARBADOS would NOT BE FOR SALE!

  21. @David

You ever had yard fowls? You ever throw scratch grain in the middle of the yard and see the yard fowls come running to gobble it up?

Man, that is how this coming across to me. Like we ain’t got nothing. We need to start looking at what we have rather than what we don’t have.

I hear many say that our foreparents work hard to build up this country. Now I hearing work smart… but the old people got a saying, one smart dead at too smart door.

I saw a clip on TV about a Christian school opening. One of the things that caught me was when the Chairman spoke about the equipment and construction that the parents provided. The effort counts and this one example shows that if we make the effort, it will count and it will make the difference. I am sure there are many more that don’t get the publicity and therefore Bajans do not know what they can do with so little when pooled together.

The BL&P made a $50Million profit last year and C&W made $90M… so where you think the majority of that money came from? Certainly not out of mid air. They ain’t no bank.

Maybe we need to adopt a few slogans like, “Make an effort and the change will come”. “Change the attitude and a change will come”; “Only you can make this change, if only you would make the effort”. I seeing the promos all now.

  22. And Adrian, that Royal-Blue Carpet would be for our BLACK brothers and sisters!

  23. @ROK

Barbados is in a difficult situation. We understand the ideal but then pragmatism kicks in.

The BU household listened to a caller known as the Trinidadian lady yesterday and was heartened to know some people in this world still believe.

ROK our country needs a plan, we need to discuss it, and then we need to execute it.

Our willingness to leverage this lottery thing should not be confused as a surrender.

    Hopi,

ANYONE that has recently won 45 million Pounds and that states he wants to buy a property in his ‘favourite holiday destination – Barbados’

  25. @ALoveridge……..And?

  26. @ Pat

I think if a Nigerian or Ghanaian won the lottery they would probably help to develop their “village” (not all Ghanaians and Nigerians come from a village!), but I bet you they wouldn’t live there even if they had a token home. They’d opt for a nice gated community in the posh areas, and would choose to live abroad and at home.

Because they have the money they now have a choice – the village is not the only choice!
