One of the significant policy initiatives rolled-out by the Democratic Labour Party since taking office is allowing school children to travel free on the public transportation system. In many respects it can be described as a public good. While many parents who have several school children in the household are benefiting from the economic benefit we should not trivialize the social benefit of extricating our young children from within the world of the minibus and ZR culture. It is interesting that this policy initiative coincided with the school heads enforcing a zero tolerance to a uniform standard.
The BU household like many of you believe that the children are our future and the way our young people go so too will our nation. We congratulate the government for having the gumption to implement this initiative.
Prime Minister David Thompson appears to be operating from a populist platform. Some are already beginning to say that this approach will bring him into conflict with that segment of the population at the higher social echelon. In his most recent press conference he virtually admitted that he would rather be a socialist than a capitalist.
To demonstrate his people centred philosophy, the government wined and dined rank and file employees of the Barbados Transport Board last night at the Llaro Court-the official residence of the Prime Minister. From all reports those in attendance appreciated the additional recognition of the contribution they played in making the rollout of the free fares for school children a success. We understand that prior to last night each transport employee had received a signed letter of appreciation from Prime Minister David Thompson.
Sir Roy Trotman was in attendance last night and as one would expect associated his union with the government’s move to recognized the transport board employees. He took the opportunity to tell employees about the the decision of the transport board to put in place a pension scheme. The many employees who braved the rainy weather were very receptive to the announcement by Sir Roy.
Sometimes all that is required for employees to be supportive of management and to feel motivated is to hear THANK YOU.
