  1. Make sure you watch the video in this PR!

What’s the latest on this national park initiative? I don’t recall hearing the government on it after elections. I heard Greenland though. What’s taking so long to declare and make in effect this a national park?

  2. We know that sister blog Barbados Free Press has covered this matter extensively. Under the former government there seemed to have hit a wall when there was a plan to build a water park. It seems such a waste that Graeme Hall would not get the accreditation of a national park, it is a beautiful place.

  3. ….it is a beautiful place.

True, but you know there will always be those who just cannot rest until every last available square inch of land in Barbados is paved over and is either a parking lot, a road, a condo, or a housing development (granted they might leave a few postage stamps of chemically supported and maintained greenery in the form of golf courses).

To those people, the sight of sterile concrete and a bulging bank account is far more beautiful than anything mother nature could ever provide.

  4. I’ve always been of the view that successive governments continues to play politics with a gold mine. There are two places I go to relieve stress, by the gazebo on the hill in Farley Hill National Park or Greame Hall Nature Sanctuary.

  5. The Nation Newspaper of Saturday September 27 2008 has a 2 page spread (Page 26 and page 27) celebrating World Tourism Day including the text of an address by the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy.

What is very interesting is the large BTA ad on page 26 with the headline “Eco-Tourism Better for Barbados with a capital B”. The ad includes copy like:

“It is just basic common sense to protect and preserve the world we live in”

“Eco-tourism of course starts with protecting and preserving our natural environment in every form………”

“Eco Tourism is sustainable tourism which takes into account not only environmental concerns, but also shares its development and bounty with residents, communities, local businesses….. Now and in the future”

“Today’s more sophisticated (and affluent) tourists are looking for destinations that are eco-friendly. In their homes and communities they tend to practice and support environmentally friendly living. They want the same from their vacation choices”

Does anyone recall one word of support from the Minister, Ministry of Tourism or BTA for the Graeme Hall National Park initiative?

Having espoused all of the laudable platitudes about the environment and Eco-tourism, is the Honourable Minister, his Ministry and the BTA, going to throw their support behind the initiative to preserve the green space at Graeme Hall . If ever there was a tangible way they could turn words into action this would be it.

Come to think of it even the private sector BHTA and individual tourism players (with the exception of Mr. Loveridge) have never given a word of encouragement or support to the Graeme Hall initiative despite making similar environmental and Eco-tourism statements in the media.

    @ David

“It seems such a waste that Graeme Hall would not get the accreditation of a national park, it is a beautiful place.”

David, keep your fingers crossed. Maybe the Ministry of Tourism will awaken from its slumber and champion the idea of a National Park at Graeme Hall for the benefit of Barbadians and visitors.
