I saw on the Toronto CP 24 News last night, the Barbados Fire Chief accepting a donation from the Toronto Fire Service of used fire-fighter protective clothing and equipment. As a proud Barbadian who has always considered us as a leader among the Caribbean nations; could not help but think. “Is this what we have come to”?Don’t get me wrong, it is good to see the recycling of good equipment that otherwise might have just been dumped, but I could not help but feel that, have we reached the stage that we have to go with hat in hand looking for hand-me-downs to supply our fire service. Most Barbadians do not consider themselves as Third World yet why does our government let one our most important public service branches be treated as such.?

Maybe I am just a little too PROUD of our PROUD little nation.

The information was posted over at Barbados Forum. For some reason the message by the poster, who appears to be a Barbadian living in Canada, conveyed sadness. BU has interpreted the last sentence of the post which the poster highlighted in the colors of Barbados to mean that his pride as a Barbadian was dented after watching the broadcast. To be honest in the BU we feel the same way in the BU household. Barbados Fire Chief Mayers, if you have to accept the old equipment then do it away from the public glare.

 

What is the message which our leaders are sending? We spend millions on a multiplicity of project but we have to accept “hand-me-downs to supply our service.”

    All I have gained from reading this blog is information that the number of unhappy people are greater than the happy people. We need to stop attacking persons on this blog and attack the system. We need to grow some balls and try changing the system.

    I know it is easier said than done , I know in our first attempt we may be victimized but a little victimization is good for the heart (lol) . We in this small department are too capitalist minded. The fire service members are too docile because we come from a docile society . We continue to let things happen, then do the next best thing we appear on the blog to attack people.

    We want to be rebels but are afraid of conflict ,confrontation and victimization. We want to be rebels but want to live happily ever after, We want to be rebels but want the department to be like a walk in the park or a bed of roses.

    Mr or Ms Anonymous. I am going to air my concerns when the time is right. We need to eject a lot of departmental gimmicks that were planted into our heads from recruiting, now onto another subject.

    Information just landed in front on my doorstep, just maybe it fell off a truck, just maybe. Now after my comment I will be under attack from the Bajan word press know it alls but I do not care because my pot don’t boil at wanna house. Readers please forgive my bad english and editorial skills, on topics like these I tend to get a little passionate.

    I would like that we in this docile society to exercise our capacity to think. We need to stop consuming the the lies and excreta from the world leaders via BBC , CNN and FOXNEWS. The Somalian people are victims of economic bullying and slavery , the French ,US and British vessels travel to the waters off the African continent to dump toxic and radioactive waste. The Somalian people rebelled against the savage act because their coast guards hands were tied so the people took the law in their own hands to protested against the dumping. The Americans and the Europians brought up this propaganda scheme by saying they are pirates and terrorists.

    The capitalist thinking Barbadian public accepted that hogwash with no questions asked . First of all why only one poverty stricken African country is targeted as pirates? The environmental and health conflict arrived after the Asian tsunami when the disposed toxic materials littered the Somalian coastline. We in Barbados would not know about the mayhem these materials have cost the somali people because the world leaders make us think what they want us to think. They control all our information because our media houses do not embrace investigative type reporting so we have to eat the nonsense they feed us.

    Famous five and anonymous thanks for agreeing about my stance against the tongue lashing on this blog but you two mentioned nothing about attacking the system and the high level of corruption withing the department. One question I must ask you two. Do you know what it feels like to be victimized by the system? Anonymous said in his or her last comment that ,,we should educate our selves,, thats easier said than done how can we educate ourselves if the decision makers in the department put obstacles in the road to academic development ?     I want to speak briefly on some issues.

    It appears to me that we spend too much time focusing on Gasbag and the other foolish people. We all know what Gasbag, may nerd and others are like, so don’t let us give them the satisfaction of thinking that they are important, that is why we must talk about them all of the time.

    I give credit, where credit is due, and it is good that Gasbag has a masters, if it is true because I do not believe anything that people say until I have seen the documents myself.

    Due to him achieving his “Masters in Management” I would have to say that he did not get anything that anybody else can not get. Ask anybody at UWI and they would tell you that management is the easiest course to study there, even an illiterate person like me could pass.

    I have also observed that the people in the department who study are mostly studying management, then when they have passed their course, what is the department going to do with them?. Soon from now we are going to have a department full of managers and no workers. This is something to think about.

    For those people who wait on the department to give them a course, I feel sorry for you guys because obviously you do not know your rights in Government. It would suit you best instead of writing gossip on this blog to take time out to call Service Commission, Personnel Administration to find out how you can study without being selected by the department or do online courses, like I do sometimes.

    How much education you gain should not be up to the fire service. So that is food for thought.

    I can not condone the behaviour of talking about Gasbag’s new jacket, if it is true or false that is a matter for the parties involved. What I do hope is that Mrs Gasbag would wake up one day, realise that she can do much better and walk away from the marriage. I will continue to be a friend to her whenever she needs me.

    We like to say that the people at the top do not know what is going on in the fire service but I can assure you that they know because I personally spoke to them. You know what they said, we are aware of all the problems within the fire service but tell me, what are they doing about them? I say nothing, it would mean that once they get their job done, they do not care what we are going through or our working conditions.

    The final thing that I would say, if the conditions do not suit you in the department, the best thing to do is put yourself in a position to move on to a better job, with better pay and less stress. There are so much people who have gone this route and people who want more out of life will continue to go this route, in the end the Fire Service will be the loser.

    I want the members of the B.F.S. to know that no man is an island . we are all adults here i tired of hearing the same fuc—g thing over n over again the service gone to the dogs (sorry to say) but when the head bad the whole body bad. We the workers of the service got to stand up to the plate and do something to let the world know what going on in this place. It get so bad in this place that a sub-officer could embarace the D.C.F.O. on a fire ground and nothing is done about it.
    That famous sub-officer should turn up for work and fine all he staff sick out but you know what the ones that frighten for him would turn up.
    We are not a united bunch i would advise all the young fire officers to try and learn the work and give the public 150% when you have to go out on calls.
    And don’t let some of these N.C.O’s play you for no fool by pushing you to do them job. some of the N.C.O.’s that put in 35 years and over should go home and relax them old ass cause they only putting the public at risk cause them aint able to do the work no more

    Why is it that our ministry of health giving the public wrong information about swine flu? They advice us to take precautionary measures these measures are for a bacterial outbreak,but swine flu is a virus. I am not trying to scare anyone but the only protection from a virus is a 3M respirator. The lucky thing about this virus is that this type of strain is usually short lived..

    Why is it that you all are castigating Gasbag, we all know the type of person he is, you should be worrying about the other N.C.O’s who eat, drink and sleep with the F.O’s then turn on them with the officers also certain senior F.O’s that used to curse the system but now that they are in the 2ic position agree with everything that happens, that position for them now is the stomping groung for pomotion.     I like the way i will only be here once put it he is the only one to me that is thinking logically we all know the lackeys so why worry about them lets put our heads together and find a way to make the service a better place to work, it may seems impossible especially when you have senior fire officers who drive CARS the same colour of the the HULK who cuss the administration when they are not 2ic’s but when they get the position they act as thought they are so straight and upright. The same fire officers when not in position will be in barks huffing and puffing coming to work late but when in position be at work at least thirty minutes early, so tell me who should you be worrying about, brothers if you’re eyes are not open by now then all i can say is GOD help us.

    Why wanna dont stop attacking persons on this blog. We need to attack the system about issues and possible solutions.

    First of all I must explain the difference between capitalism and socialism and you readers may see why we should debate a systematic change and not a personality change.

    Capitalism is a type of governance where the profit margin of individuals in the higher echelons of society would be maintained or increased at the EXPENSE of the working class. Education and Health care standards at the working class level is minimal . Hence the upper class cares nothing about the working class as long as the work is done and the profit margin is maintained. The upper class receives the best education and the best health care services while the working class receive suffering ,illiteracy and poverty.

    Socialism on the other hand is an extreme, going in the opposite direction to capitalism. Within this type of governance the wealth , health care and education is spread evenly across the population , no one is disadvantaged and left behind .Some times an individual does not make decisions with the country at interest so these important decisions will be made for you.

    Now let us get back to the BFS , I think throughout history, the department was ruled under a capitalist style of management where training and chances for promotion are not evenly distributed. The extremely high level of corruption will be maintained because the service is not willing to embrace the socialist style of management. There is also no form of accountability that is why the masses have to suffer due to the recklessness of a few.

    Under the socialist management style, training would spread evenly across the masses, corruption would decrease, motivation and empowerment would be at a maximum . Fire officers would not have to go home to their families with a brown tongue from kissing ass . The department would be a force for the future. And another thing , that khaki uniform that the gazetted rank are outfitted needs to be changed immediately. The design and colour of that uniform is a mental stigma and a symbol of slavery . The officers should be wearing their rank markings with the blue uniform to give the department members a sense of togetherness .
    The cerimonial black for officer could remain but that khaki colour . I hate it

    Now reading Fowl Cock column , the media is the answer to exposing these venomous serpents in the department. Now the public dont know that they are less than nine Self Contained Breathing Apparatus sets to serve the municipal fire fighting section of the department at any given time. This means that in building fires we cannot rescue the public efficiently when they are trapped in a building or we cannot fight fire offensive. We just have to shoot water through windows and doorways but we dare not enter. Yet the administration do not budget for this in the estimates. Mr. David this info cannot be put in a document and posted, but to prove this to you ,you can either come at any fire station during working hours and ask for a tour of the fire trucks. You can send your friends at any of the other fire stations to gather info as well . The SCBAs are in the rear of the vehicles cabin embedded in the lumbar support in the back seat, they look similar to a divers tank, with a mask attached . just count them. The Arch Hall Station truck got 1 , st james truck got 1, st john truck got 2 ,worthing truck got 1 and headquarters station may have 3 if you are lucky.

    Sell Out! can you used a scba, the reason that we have few set are that the personnel don’t want to train and then throw the set by the way side and honestly how many firemen have the balls to go in a burning structure with SCBA only a few in doubt even ten men. Before you talk ask why the set are not taken care of when its our duty, all firemen want to do is cook, sleep ,eat, drink rum and wash their cars , how many of us really can be honest with ourselves and say we are not good enough we need proper training, I can say this for myself can the rest of you. Our supervisors can’t even used them so how can we. stop talking people names and let us learn our work first,even the so call gasbag is caught up with people business when this man should be helping the training unit but their is nothing there for him to advance so he don’t care about our development,only doing as he like and abusing his rank. So let us serve the public and we are to blame for poor or faulty equipment

    To all my fellow officers ,i write to u with a heavy heart about the seemingly blatant consumption of alcohol within te ranks of the b.f.s. its a chronis problem especially with the young officers under the perview of the senior ranks in the bfs. ladies and gentlemen stop this stupidness wef , we have the public to protect… . my major concern thought is one of my co-workers whos slipping away from us slowly but surely….kinda replacing blood in his veins with alcohol..no pun intended..he needs help desperately and that doscile mendacious bunch of rif-rafts called the adminstration does absolutely nothing to help him…he trembles when he walks…forgets more than usual and consumes more rum than food…NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE FOR HIM…how sad….peoples please help de indian……

Fo136 is highly under-rated in the department and he is the only international trained officer who is not a yardfowl or a yesman .He should be given a chance to prove himself and run for association president.     . Our administration is our weakest link guys, so if the head is weak how do u expect the body to be?. These people are so f.. ing sad, stupidity was never contagious until the BFS admin was mentioned .They all live in the pass these blokes are just tunnel minded /vision , they reminds me of cane trash not because of the uniform but they are all there because there were around from young.     My concern is about the health and well being of all the fire officers who put their lives at risk everyday to serve and protect the lives and property of this island. Working in this organisation i have seen what the administration of the BFS beliefs are in respect to this. In the last issue of kit for the year we were given gloves and “ear moffs” in addition to the regular kit that we receive anually but in my opinion the “ear moffs” are just to keep your ears warm. Yes i know it is protective equipment that can be used when we go up by the Airport Fire Stn or if we have tours with heavy machinerybut how often do the majority of us find outselves in those places. Firstly tours of plants and comanies with heavy machinery are at a all time low and only a selected few work up at the AFStn on a regular basis. When i first got those two additions to the kit i was like what are these really for. why is it that they Bragade doesnt issuse us with respirators which would be more logically applicable for most of us who work everyday dealing with grass fires. I dont know if other people realize but the grass fires of today are more toxic than ever before. With the all of illegal dumping going on in barbados with tires,bags and garbage that are thrown deliberately in the pastures and the ignorant bajans does burn every year gone are the days of who can eat more smoke. I have been one of the few officers that have be trained with SCBA and it isnt a problem to put it on but the problem is to have that heavy crap on ur back and tryign to beat out a fire. Personally i bought my own respirtor because i care about my own health and i would recommend all other officers to do the same but it is just to show that if we dont take care of ourselves no one else will and to me the “EAR MOFFS” were just a waste of money even now mine still in the bag next time spend the money on something that would benefit us all.

    guys the incinerator brake down n them took it upon themselves to burn the garbage above the station making the guys sick when we complain they saying they thought we were firemen that we could take the smoke and then again no representation from the admin .This thing burns in the eyes,nose n trought they cares little or nothing about us this happens every year and the trash men says nothing about it because when it startes to burn they are no way arount it startes burning about 17:00.Spartan if only u know how that selective few are selected for the A.F stn
    right now,I don’t think u would want to be one,we are the cast asides up here is the slums right now we deserve some kind of hazard allowance for working in these deplorable conditions yet still were are nothing .

    The BFS is a relatively small unit where, almost all members know each other. There is a Union /Association . Where is there any need to come to this forum and wash their dirty linen in public. This is supposed to be a discipline organisation.

    Looks to me like the whole lot of you complaining firemen are a load of cowardly bastards , too chicken hearted to confront your union/association or superior officers,but are quite willing to take pot shots behind their backs, with mickey mouse names from being identified,and are not against pelting big rocks at colleagues of similar ranks, who dare say something differently to you. It is about time we stop focusing on GASBAG and focus on someone who has a very secretive work life and most of all personal life. Y’all think that this man is not intimitated by GASBAG but he is. He pimps around personnel from Personnel Administration Division trying to get information about the Chief recommending him for promotion. And yes he has been recommended for promotion. So he is about to get more cocky than GASBAG. It may seem that this man is your friend. It seems Gossip Girl was his friend for the past couple years. But he uses you all to get information.     Having actually sat and listened face to face to the firefighters for years, I can tell you that they do have many problems within the fire house. There is no trust among them, not only for thier peers of similar rank nut also for thier superiors….and this is so throughout the department.

    Thier problems will not easily be solved by comventional methods. Proposals have to be made to the powers that be by someone from outside who has the trust and respect of all the fire fighters all across the board, and to whom they complain unwittingly………if you get my drift!

    We note that the men in blue are on strike in St. Lucia? Not aware that discipline forces could strike!

    We do hope that the obvious long-running concerns of our firefighters can be addressed soon by the erudite AG Freundel Stuart.

    It is one of the first commitments which he made when he came into office.

    We had asked the BU FF family to submit a document because we know that BU is monitored by government surrogates. Our offer remains on the table.

We started this blog on the wrong foot by personal attacks, now it went further down hill by calling actual names ,but now it gone to a sick level by threats.Not only that but you guys using names of other persons to target certain individuals, that is definately not human like behavior. Guys come on wanna could do better than that. STOP THE FOOLISHNESS.

    Now I mainly came here to address an issue . We have some admin loyals keep saying to me that reporting sick is not the answer to resolving issues but the administration transfering people left right and center as their way of conflict resolution . Tell me what multiple standards are we expressing here? Is this the case of the sauce pan calling the kettle black or satan trying to correct sin? If thats the only way they can deal with issues SHAME ON YOU wanna is poor administrators. Ok Start victimizing me now!

    I agree with you only to a certain extent. If someone report sick, they come back to work and the problem is still there on the other hand transfering someone MAY be a solution. Our administrators need to address the issues in the department and stop hoping for them to resolved themselves, the workers are crying out to you, so adminstrators do your job and stop saying ” I left for inspection”
