Consciousness of the people their protection
In a previous article I discussed former Democratic Labour Party (DLP) leader Dr Ronnie Yearwood in relation to his missing, misunderstanding, or misrepresenting a statement that I made years ago and have continued to make ever since. In his response in the Nation newspaper, Dr Yearwood continued the trend of missing the mark. But nevertheless, we can use his arguments to help us get clearer.
The statement which I made was to the effect that, ultimately, the consciousness of a people is our/ their only real protection. Any leader, particularly in parts of the world without military or economic clout, who does not understand this is not fit for purpose. However, our leaders come from among us. They are created within us. They reflect us. If the national consciousness is not fit for purpose, the political consciousness, in many cases, will not be fit for purpose.
This presents a serious cyclical dilemma. Political leadership has great potential power and influence on national consciousness. In nations where the national consciousness is emerging from centuries of enslavement and colonisation, a leader who does not or cannot see the need to address and repair their own consciousness will struggle to lead the necessary repair of national consciousness. They will not be fit for purpose.
This is not too complex to understand. Dr Yearwood calls the position sophomoric. It is definitely not rocket science nor constitutional law. So, if one does not agree, then a robust rebuttal should be easy.
Instead, Dr Yearwood inadvertently strengthened my point. He argued that: “History shows that the consciousness of the people upheld slavery for centuries.” It should not have to be explicitly stated that if the consciousness of the people can protect us, it can also leave us vulnerable. What this history shows is that no matter what is written in a constitution, it is the consciousness of the people that allows it to stand or puts pressure towards change, as was the case with slavery.
If Dr Yearwood meant for this line of reasoning to challenge my assertion, it was not fit for purpose.
Dr Yearwood goes on to argue as if asserting the importance of the consciousness of the people is a denial of the importance of constitutional safeguards and political checks and balances.
He says that it “ignores a mix of law, institutions and culture that form a nation”. It doesn’t. What it recognises is that laws and institutions that are not embedded in and emergent from the culture and consciousness of a people will be weak. If laws and institutions are embedded in or emergent from a damaged collective consciousness and culture, there will also be problems. Technocrats may find this hard to appreciate. Which is why they may not be fit for the purpose of leadership.
Dr Yearwood again strengthens my point when he correctly argues that a “deep repudiation of the Westminster system” and a radically new Barbadian republican constitution have yet to be delivered. They have also yet to be demanded by the masses of people. If the need for this was embedded in and emergent from the consciousness of the people, it would happen. I have been enduring and consistently vocal about the deficiency of education and engagement on this matter.
It is not clear if, like me, Dr Yearwood also wants a deep repudiation of the Westminster system and a radically new Barbadian republican constitution or he just wanted to point out that it was not delivered. His position has been that there was no “plebiscite-driven process or referendum to decide the type of republic”. It is doubtful if a referendum without deeply addressing public consciousness would deliver radical change either.
This brings up another powerful and inadvertently supportive point by Dr Yearwood. He points out that the consciousness of the people can be “swayed, suppressed or manipulated by communications specialists, technology, bots and AI”. Yes. However, he fails to mention politicians or aspiring politicians. The successful ones understand the primacy of the consciousness of the people. The good ones try to raise it. The not-so-good ones seek to manipulate it for their own benefit.
It is often not clear when political aspirants are sincere in their positions or if they are just trying to sway voters, to score political points or on an ego trip. After election time, they and their soap boxes often disappear. Around election time, like now so, they pop back up again.
The endurance and consistency of the advocacy of attorney Tricia Watson, even after the DLP shake-up, has been noted and appreciated by the public. Professor Cynthia Barrow-Giles has been offering her expertise to Government ever since the republican transition to hopefully help steer the transformation of governance in the right direction.
But the ship is a stubborn one. Because we are not just dealing with changing words written on paper. We are dealing with deep consciousness – oftentimes our own. Also, with some people who do not respect the centrality and importance of the consciousness of the people.

Let there never be any doubt that Pacha considers you to be one of the best living Bajans. Indeed, if you were the “mean” the country would have been in a much better place.
However, and you know Pacha enough to expect some sort of ‘however’ – you are wrong.
For to proffer that after nearly 60 years of independence the best that weee can do is to settle for the alternating domination of a class of idiots, when you yourself have many times concluded that “what” we’ll be voting for is more of the same, represents an absence of courage uncharacteristic of you.
How can one vote against “shoite” by voting for the shoite from previous years, or the shoite the system cannot avoid. And if the DLP should overcome this dictatorship, is guaranteed to present us, and continue to deliver with the same regularity, what sense does that make? Have weee not tried this many times before?
For the problems which Barbados has can never be resolved based on whether voters stay home or not, whether the battle between the yardfowls produce a win, a lost or a draw. Other factors, separate and distinct from the endogonous, must be imposed, not only on elections but at the very centre of the ruling system, by external variables.

Reading between the lines the sub-plot in the election campaign and the next 5-10 years is rebuilding credible opposition to the Government in Parliamentary process. I think Ronnie and Tricia should be taken back by DLP to heal the division among party members and ex-party members, or they should run as independents to prove a point.

So I am proposing that we as a people become the opposition by being more vocal and placing pressure on who ever wins. You see when the vendors at Savvy kicked up how fast the minister ran down there to make peace! I think we must pick up the role of opposition and be more vocal. Use the blogs, Facebook, Instagram what ever and don’t wait for no opposition to carry the fight.

Military men are the leading examples we have of making decisions in highly complex environments. The costs are immediate and could be high even with levels of success. For them do-overs may not be options. Actions could mean death. War gives us meaning, another has said.

According to the article, the Trump administration seems to be using indirect and/or economic sanctions, including restriction on visas, as INTIMIDATORY METHODS, to FORCE the 7 CARICOM member states mentioned therein, into accepting “ASYLUM SEEKERS” deported from the United States and UNABLE to RETURN to their country of origin,”……
…… and NOT “illegal migrants,” as is being suggested.

The author of the above comments is an extremely interesting individual, who never ceases to amaze me.
He has given BU the impression that Mottley made a unilateral decision “to allow “illegal migrants” to enter Barbados, perhaps to satisfy an increase of the population by 80,000.
The proposal to increase the population was made FIRST MADE by the former DLP administration, and subsequently ENDORSED by the current BLP administration.
Hence, my mantra,….. that there aren’t any SIGNIFICANT political, ideological or philosophical DIFFERENCES between the BLP and DLP.
However, he purposely ignored TWO (2) important points in his usual effort to present false narratives.
(1). “The United States has set a cap of 7,500 refugees for this relocation program for the year 2026,” which essentially rubbishes his “80,000’ claim.
(2). The signatory countries of this agreement have negotiated conditions:
(i). OBLIGATORY CLEAN CRIMINAL RECORD FOR EACH REFUGEE
(ii). FULL FUNDING by the United States (transport, accommodation, food aid) and priority to nationals of the CARICOM zone in a situation of migratory impasse.”
Interestingly, “Guyana sees this situation as an opportunity. The country, facing a labour shortage, is seeking to attract nearly 80,000 qualified workers.”

That cap of 7500 is a headline number to put us in a trance. There’s a country in the middle East which has an imagination beyond the stars. It has a surplus group of neighbours which it would like to expel.
This country has a heavy influence on USA government policies. Once those numbers are breached and they will. Our region will realise that we will have no control over the numbers of people who will be dumped in our region. A number of Palestinians will be sent to our region, plus the worse of the worse.
