Despite this surface-level appearance of the continuity of the Munroe doctrine, it is, however, important that analysts focus less on “what is happening” and more on “why it is happening” and what it means for the long-term global political future.
In terms of the “what has happened”, we can trust our eyes: the US has managed, by whatever means, to spirit the president of Venezuela out of his country.
The country’s Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, has now assumed the leadership and has announced her intention to continue to resist US neo-colonial interference.
The deeper question is why is this happening now? What is happening inside the US, its economy, and its place in the world, that currently compels its use of military threats and force to achieve its economic and political goals?
The US is currently exhibiting several signs of a superpower in global decline. In such historical moments, the fading power resorts only to force as a desperate last resort to enforce global compliance, given the collapse of legitimate authority. Naked force, however, is never an effective way of maintaining power, and is often a sign of weakness.

Indeed, what is being witnessed is an imperial power dismantling the very global governance and “rules-based system” which had sustained its own hegemony. The first part of this Venezuela action may actually suit MAGA. Chump removed a head of state ACCUSED of facilitating narco trafficking to the US. The very real question though, is there strong evidence to convict Maduro whenever the trial is held? Even if this trial is held while Chump is still in power what if a jury cannot come to a guilty verdict. It is a real possibility. Chump’s favorability ratings are tanking. Americans are not really seeing the removal of Maduro as a “patriotic act” in the same light as when Manuel Noriega was removed. What will the US administration under Chump do with Maduro if he is not convicted or even brought to trial? Will they deport him back to Venezuela?
The next part of the action is Chump preposterous insinuation that he will run Venezuela as if it will be a colony. I’m totally convinced nobody else in his administration knew this was the “plan” until Chump made the media announcement of the Maduro raid. Chump as usual makes up crap along the way while addressing media with the politically savviness of a teenybopper. When you analyze Chump he has a shocking lack of awareness of geopolitics and international diplomacy for a typical adult much less a US politician.
At any rate Chump would have to insert troops into Venezuela if he is to run it. An action which he blatantly campaigned against. Does Chump really believe that he can run Venezuela without armed resistance from Maduro’s supporters? I’m also convinced this “grab for oil” was also thought up on the spot by Chump. When you do a deeper analysis the USA does not not need immediate access to oil. It is not worth the cost of mid to long term military deployment even if it would be to defend US oil company assets.
Chump wants to sugar coat the action as a deliberate liberation of Venezuela from tyranny. Nobody with a functioning brain believes that. Maduro power base is still intact, Maduro’s vice president is now President and very much pro Maduro. If he really wanted to liberate Venezuela the US military must be inserted or sponsor a pro US regime which will have a cost. This is technically not true, they actually do…
A deeper analysis would show that key refinery plant in the USA will be hard pressed to meet diesel and other heavy fuel demands – that are needed for the transportation network that keeps the ‘just in time’ distribution system working – without access to Venezuela heavy Crude oil.
They own (adequate) light crude is ok for gasoline, but not heavier industrial fuels such as diesel etc. They therefore use a special ‘blend’.
Experts predict that by May, a cut in supply will effectively grind USA distribution systems to a halt via shortages and uncompetitive prices.
There are still a few in the USA who are intelligent enough to see such obvious realities. Perhaps some of these were able to convince Trump that it was worth the gamble with kidnapping Maduro… grabbing at straws…

Caribbean group urges UN to act
The Assembly of Caribbean People is condemning the actions of the United States in Venezuela last weekend, saying the Americans were acting in contravention of the United Nations (UN) Charter.
During a virtual regional press conference yesterday hosted by the assembly’s Regional Executive Committee, David Abdulah, the regional executive, read from an open letter written to the UN entitled: The United States Is Tearing Up The Charter Of The United Nations – It Must Be Stopped.
It was addressed to Secretary General António Guterres and president of the General Assembly Annalena Baerbock.
“On Saturday, January 3, 2026, members of the armed forces of the US, on the directive of the president of that country, invaded the sovereign state of the Bolivarian republic of Venezuela. The US military bombed a number of locations in Venezuela, targeting civilian and military installations, took action to disable Venezuelan communication systems used for its defence and to cut off electrical power from certain areas. At the same time, military forces landed in Caracas, the capital city of the Bolivarian republic, and kidnapped the President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, and the First Lady, Cilia Flores, in a violent attack on their residence.
Territorial integrity
“The US military killed some 40 Venezuelan security personnel and 32 Cuban security personnel who were tasked with the protection of the president of Venezuela. A number of Venezuelan civilians were also killed, and homes damaged or destroyed by the violent bombing. The US military then took the kidnapped president of Venezuela and his wife out of the country and into the US, where they were placed in a US jail in Brooklyn, New York,” he said.
Abdulah declared this act was in contravention of UN Charter Article 2(4), which states: “All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.” He added: “The US has gone further as its president, without any concern whatsoever for the UN Charter, has continued to threaten the territorial integrity and political independence of the state of Venezuela, where he publicly announced that the US would now, ‘Run Venezuela, that we are in charge’, and further, that if the vice-president, and now constitutionally installed temporary president of Venezuela, did not behave and do what she is told by Washington, she would suffer a fate worse than President Maduro,” he said.

As such, he stated, they were urging the UN to use its power and influence to compel the US to reverse its position. Failure to do so, he added, could spell the end of the UN itself.
“Excellencies, the issue before you is simple: What are you going to do to keep the UN from destruction? For this is what is facing you and all member states. If the charter can be so brazenly torn up by the US on the basis that it has enough military and economic power to attack Venezuela and kidnap its president; threaten the constitutional temporary president; state that it is going to run that country and take all of its land, oil and resources; announce that other sovereign states, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, and their leaders are next and that it will seize Greenland, which is part of the sovereign state of Denmark; bomb Nigeria on the false premise that Christians are being killed; openly tell the people of sovereign Honduras who to vote for or else they will be punished with sanctions and tariffs; and unilaterally impose tariffs on Brazil because it does not agree with the decision of that country’s Supreme Court, then the UN has totally lost its credibility and its life will be at an end.
“This has now been amplified by the outrageous and downright dangerous decision by Trump to pull the US out of some 66 international organisations, of which more than 30 are UN organisations, including the vitally important UN Framework Convention On Climate Change,” Abdulah said.
Abdulah stressed that the US had “thrown down the gauntlet” against the world, where it will do as it pleases and “the devil take the hindmost”.

For international law has over a long period of time been rendered inert by the very proponents of international law, democracy and justice. it was never obeyed by America unless its interests were served, and never will be. Before the criminal Donald Drumpf stepped up to deliver the coup de gras to international law, Joe Biden had declared ‘a rules-based order’. Laughably, Biden’s rules were never written anywhere and were subject to quixotic changes from time to time to suit Western purposes. What rules? “Rules for thee, not for me”, some writers have suggested.

But instead of not even pretending that America could be made great, Drumpf’s only pre-occupation is about using the presidency to enrich himself.
The UN is best advised to keep feeding off the benefits nearness to empire affords it while waiting for the UN itself to join America in that fate within which the British and the League of Nations both simultaneously met a well-earned cultural death.
