This space is to encourage discussion about the distasteful event which played out on the global stage between Presidents Zelenskky, Trump and Vice President Vance last week at the White House. Obviously a more volatile geopolitical environment will have implications for the tiny Caribbean region. It will be interesting to anticipate the outcome, if any, the proposed meeting between the Trump administration and CARICOM.

Today the EU coalition of the willing signalled support for Ukraine to be partially financed by frozen Russian assets. No surprise the war machinery in Europe is about to be ‘fired up’ to manufacture weapons destined for the Ukraine military.

The blogmaster is ambivalent about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Especially after Russia was booted from the G7 and the isolationist polices of the West that have intensified since. There is the saying home drums beat first therefore Putin – like any leader of a country, including President Trump – will implement policies in the national interest.

The same is true for Ukraine which assumed an independent nation status after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The history of that region is complicated given the shared heritage of the two countries. That said, Ukraine is an independent nation and like Russia, Zelenskky has the same right as Putin to defend his country’s self interest as he see fit.

European countries and NATO have an interest to ensure its national security is not compromised given hegemonist inclinations which history records. At the mention of NATO the involvement of the USA must be considered given the alliance. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Stermer has taken the ‘lead’, presumably with back channel support from the USA to reduce the temperature in the geopolital space.

Barbadians will watch with fingers crossed and hope the conflict does not mushroom. We should do our best to be as self sufficient as we is possible and maximise scarce resources.

  1. Did Elon Musk wear a suit and tie when he addressed cabinet or when his little boy was distracting at a press briefing in the Oval Office? You are an embarrassment really.

  2. Not an embarrassment, a master parrot…with a convenient memory.

  3. Johnny

Come on! That jacket and tie shiiite is dated overrated, represent the enforcement of albino standards.

Who made that shiite suit the acceptable norm? Dont the peoples of the world not have much better than your staid, tiring, same-me-same-me foolishness, especially for tropical countries. It’s like wearing a santa clause suit, in the heat, and saying ho, ho, ho!

White people laughing ar weee. Zelenski should go in his birthday suit instead.

Neither the fascist Drumpf nor Vance deserves such genuflections.

  4. Kash Patel is going after Hunter Biden and Hillary Clinton!

    About time!

    Good on him! Both criminals

    What about genocide Joe?

Victoria Nuland and the other war criminals?

  5. Pach,

If he is going after them, it is only to satisfy Drump’s revenge thirst.

    Nothing more, nothing else.

  6. Stupse,

Collar and tie rubbish. Tom say, ‘every man jack, under my administration, got to wear a shirt jack”.

    And he was right.

Many criminals wear collar and tie and I see some young charlatans dressed up in a suit to make people think the are something.

Vacuous grifters in collar and tie.

  7. With 100 million Europeans facing poverty. The EU is now talking about spending 800 billion euros to built out their own military complexes.

After being sent to pasture by Trump, these fools believe they can make it on their own, as a military power. What fools!

  8. Just watched Zelenskyy and Trump argue. You know what Trump is actually right about?

We don’t have any cards to play. We never did. Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine — its state, its army, its people — has been holding out and fighting back with nothing in its hand.

By all logic, we should’ve been gone long ago. Three days, two weeks — take your pick.

Yet here we are, three years later, still standing. Still fighting. No cards in hand. In the biggest continental war of the last 80 years.

And by the way, do you know where the Russian Empire was after three years of World War I, with all its cards?

    Nowhere. It ceased to exist.

So take your cards and shove them you know where. The state, sovereignty — it’s about dignity. And the defense of that dignity. Zelenskyy defended it today.
