  1. The D is for DLP Dictionary Saga Continues..
    D is for dysfunction
    abnormality or impairment in the operation of a specified bodily organ or system.

  2. Another day in the life of the dlp the madness continues

  3. @ac

    Look at it this way, if there are two factions the party must have a person capable of facilitating reconciliation. Blackett was not that man.

  4. David in my humble opinion it is how the image of the party is being projected in the eyes of the country
    This party has lost its way six years later and different leadership and the party projects an image of disunity
    The reality the party faces is heading towards another election not united and facing another defeat

  5. Given all you have described and what we know about DLP troubles it does not change the fact a process to heal must take place. Hopefully this time around they can get it right IF it is not too late.

  6. David so how long does it take for a healing process to begin
    The image of the party is also shattered
    Another question arises along with healing how practical is it for the party to project a new image

  7. @ David

    On April 21, 2024, Steve Blackett filed a resolution indicating he doesn’t “have any confidence in Ralph Thorne to be the political leader because he (Thorne) no longer serves the best interests of our great party and call for the revocation of his membership and the immediate expulsion from the party.”

    He told the media, “This party can exist without a political leader but IT CAN’T EXIST WITHOUT a president, OR I dare say, a general secretary.”

    Ironically, ‘Stevie’ has now been suspended and replaced by his Deputy, Pedro Shepherd, clearly indicating the ‘party can’t exist without a general secretary.’

    But, is he prepared to accept the party CAN exist WITHOUT him?

    However, I’m wondering what is Ronnie (wh)O’s ‘next move’ or his plans going forward,
    now that his main supporter ‘is out of the picture?’

  8. @ac

    That is the 64k question. What the blogmaster can convey is that the public, including DLP hardcore supporters are fed up.

  9. @Artax

    The decision to suspend Blackett should indicate Thorne is gradually taking control of the. You make a good observation, Yearwood’s next move will be watched carefully because it will indicate if progress is being made.

  10. Yearwood, like most of the other jokers ‘from the Hill’, should remove themselves from serious aspects on national life – and retreat to their pet ‘research project’ of reading old newspaper clippings every damn day on VOB under the title of ‘Today in Bajan history’

    Really!! … Our Cave Hill UWI output has been the greatest national letdown since independence…
    Every meaningful shiite in Barbados is now run by foreign academics – except for the damn civil service and a few others that are all characterized by mediocrity.

    Blackett and Yearwood SHOULD both have resigned after the debacle of their childish handling of Thorne’s floor crossing and his acceptance to the party.
    Even now, resignations would have been FAR more MATURE than ‘suspensions’ and ongoing chaos…
    steupssss

    What a place
    What a curse

  11. Wake me up when something significant occurs!

  12. The country should embrace this “saga” because a similar opportunity to see the inner workings of the “theory industry” would be unlikely when and if such a party ever assumed political power.

    Of course, we talk about power in jest for the only competition here is to be the servants of others, even as Ralph Thorne and his accolyte Bushie find themselves in a proxy war as agent provocateurs of somebody in the shy.

    It is still within the spiritual philosophical dimensions, not religious, that Rockhill and by extensión all, we say all, Western thinkers come up short. Even as Rockhill tries in vain to bridge this dialéctical gap.

    Gabriel Rockhill, whose work we’ve revisted recently, talks profoundly about the role and structure of the theory industry in the production of knowledge and thereby reality.

    A reality which must be clear to all by now. For on the one side we have Mottley who has been elevated as what Rockhill calls a “radical recuporator”, only as a trick to serve the imperial core.

    And on the other, a DLP, mounted by mickmickmen and which has been forever made a nullity by the internal workings of a political duopoly. A formation which must inevitably tend towards dictatorship.

    And Barbados is not alone. For socalled multi-party states throughout the world are finally revealing themselves as no more than fascist regimes which have been prepared by the theory industry to brutalize their peoples in broad daylight as presumed freedoms are violently repressed.

    The DLP, in vain, prepares itself for the task at hand as aided by men whose heads are located within theories which can never address the material conditions of the population.

  13. It never ceases to amaze me how some of us love to blame UWI, Cave Hill Campus in particular, for every unfortunate development in Barbados.

    Although many of our academics’ gained undergraduate degrees from a UWI campus, their Masters and Phds were undertaken at FOREIGN universities.

    Take Dr. Ronnie Yearwood, for example, who is a lecturer in Law at UWI Cave Hill and qualifications are as follows:

    PhD, (International economic law), (passed without corrections, which is the highest accolade as a Doctorate is not awarded a specific grade), Newcastle Law School, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2008
    LLM, (Distinction) (International trade law), (graduated first in the class), Newcastle Law School, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2004.
    BSc., Sociology & Political Science (Honours), University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, 2001.
    Study Abroad Programme, (Political Economy & Law), University of California, Berkeley, 2001.

    Surely an individual who gained BOTH his BSc. and LLM with DISTINCTIONS and PhD with the HIGHEST ACCOLADE, cannot, in all seriousness, be regarded as a “joker ‘from the Hill’.”

  14. “Really!! … Our Cave Hill UWI output has been the greatest national letdown since independence…”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hmmmmm……
    Barbadians are known to praise people they like and critcise those they dislike. In other words, ‘we like to play favourites.
    UWI Cave Hill, lawyers, the legal and FTC have come under some ‘very heavy criticism from the BU intelligentsia.’ And, rightfully so.
    The late Justice Jefferson ‘Jeff’ Cumberbatch who is regarded as worthy of great honor and respect by members of the ‘BU family,’ was also a ‘UWI academic.’
    As Deputy Dean of the unfairly maligned UWI Cave Hill’s Law faculty, where he taught Contracts, Torts and Employment Law, he essentially had some responsibility in educating several Barbadian law graduates.
    Jeff became a member of the legal system when he was subsequently appointed to the Barbados Court of Appeal.
    And, he was Chairman of the FTC.
    All institutions we criticise to THIS day.
  15. What Pedro Shepherd didn’t say is when the Disciplinary Committee will hear the matter. It means the longer this saga continues it does nothing for the public image of the other member of the duopoly. It is instructive that unlike the BLP whose elders seem to be more ‘respected’ internally, the same is not true for the DLP.
  16. The above is a clear example of the function of the theory industry.
    We can, in reality, look into the face of Yearwood and intuitively know that he’s an idiot.
    And we use “idiot” within it’s modern meaning. For there was a time when “idiot” meant genius.
    But yet, a string of trinkets awarded by industry are to serve to convince us that intellect should over rule intuition.
    Another example of the theory industry’s deception.
    This is at the core of what has always been wrong with Western philosophy, even when Socrotes has long told us that Western education is only fit for pigs. Pig food!
  17. Here is a prime example of a man reading the room wrong.
  18. @Sargeant
    He and those he represents.
  19. @ David
    It’s clear some of us think too highly of ourselves, perhaps symptomatic of narcissistic personality disorder, while believing making highfaluting statements and quoting irrelevant shiite theories is the ‘be-all and end-all’ of human existence.
    The point is, as I’ve repeatedly mentioned in this forum, Ronnie (wh)O ‘is NOT cut out to be a politician.’
    According to some sources, ‘politically skilled leaders are adept at reading others’ behaviors and motives, influencing others to achieve important goals, building diverse relationship networks, and interacting genuinely and sincerely with others.’
    Something Yearwood has continually demonstrated he is not.
    Neither is he an astute political tactician nor does he exhibit emotional intelligence in a political context.
    His handling of this Thorne issue is clearly indicative of those ‘political short comings’ including lacking political savvy and strong management skills.
    Yet, despite his ‘political imperfections,’ I believe it is utter folly to broadly deem Ronnie (wh)O an ‘idiot,’ simply because he is ‘politically ignorant.’
  20. Political nincompoop?
  21. No one is blaming UWI. We are criticizing the quality of the product.
    The fact is, in the 90s UWI drastically increased its rate of matriculation (and loosened its entry requirements) partly based on the gradaute in every household intiative. The country basically gave UWI a blank check with no terms and conditions. You are a numbers guy, how much money does government spend per year paying for undergraduate degrees. If a country is investing so heavily in a product or industry, is it reasonable to expect something in return other than taxpaying citizens. Thirty years later and we have nothing to show for it other than nuff Swifts and Corollas. No businesses making high end products, no innovation in tourism, education, music, nothing. There will be outliers like Mr. Cumberbatch and Dr. McClean that will be expected but at the end of the day when a country invests billions in higher education it should expect more of everything and those graduates to take the country to another level. What have we gotten, a DLP full of jokers young and old and a BLP with one leader and a bunch of sycophants who have to ask their leader when to piss and what pot to piss in.
  22. I often wonder wey the BU intelligentsia went school, UWI too? 🤣🤣🤣
    To Ronnie(wh)O?, walk back down Roebuck Street or wait until RAT gets the upcoming beating then return to the helm. Drinking sparkling water and minding muh business.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
    There is a good reason why it is not to good idea to take on defecting politicians.
    Thorne’s defection from BLP to DLP has caused more problems for his new party than his old.
  24. Have to chuckle when the blp mouthpiece like Wickham agrees with any decision coming out of this saga
    After chuckling and pinching self a words of caution enters the mind knowing that the politics of pay back might be beneficial to govt by getting Steve and Yearwood out of the way making it easier for present govt to claw and maul Thorne
  25. We wonder whether Wickham could work for both sides coterminously.
    He’s doing the work already. For whatever he tells the Bees the reverse will be generally true for the Dees.
    This should not be considered outside the normal game playing actors on both sides are well use to.
  26. But weee disagree! If the reported offense is the proximate cause for discipline
    Then all the actors who had anything to do with such should be removed from office immediately.
    How could RT have confidence in the president or GS in these circumstances?
    The party must get serious. These two should be removed and the opposition leader should assume the role as dictator in wait.
  27. Looking into the history of the dlp politics and when specialized mouth pieces of the blp speaks with agreement or to give advice to the dlp
    The advice given to the dlp always is of benefit to the blp /govt during an election cycle
  28. This is a matter of statistics, voter perceptions, primarily.
    Constant polling!
    These are generally functions of what your party does to move the needle.
    Certainly, Wickham’s job should not be expected to include influencing voter perceptions, just uncovering them.
    You love your DLP tooooo much!
  29. @ REDGUARD
    YOU ARE RIGHT TO CRITIZE UWI.
    I TAUGHT A PART TIME COURSE PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT THERE IN THE MANAGEMENT DIVISION.
    I REMEMBER BEING GIVEN A TEXTBOOK TO TEACH FROM, IT WAS ON CARIBBEAN MANAGEMENT.
    I SAID WHAT A LOT OF BULLSHIT AS MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES ARE GLOBAL.
    SINCE I HAVE A MASTERS DEGREE IN MANAGEMENT FROM A US UNIVERSITY I DISREGARDED MOST OF THE NONSENSE IN THE BOOK AND WENT AHEAD AND TAUGHT MY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT SAME AS TAUGHT IN US COLLEGES.
    I ALSO HAD THEM MAKE CONTACT WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES AND VOLUNTEER FOR INTERNSHIPS THAT WAY THEY COULD ALSO LEARN PRACTICALLY IN A WORKING ENVIRONMENT.
    WHAT I NOTICED WITH MOST CLASSES AT UWI ESPECIALLY THE DIVISION I WAS IN THE LECTURERS TAUGHT THEORY SAME SHIT OVER AND OVER AGAIN REGURGITATED.
    SO IF TEACHING THERE 20 YEARS FOR EXAMPLE EVERY SET OF STUDENTS WERE TAUGHT THE SAME THEORY EVEN THOUGH THE WORLD MAY HAVE CHANGED BECAUSE EASIER FOR THEM TO DO SO AND PICKUP A PAYCHECK.
    A BUNCH OF LAZY BASTARDS.
    THAT IS WHY MOST UWI GRADUATES ARE USELESS AND NOT PRACTICAL THINKERS AND MAIN REASON THE 2X3 ISLAND IS FUCKED UP PRIMARILY.SINCE MOST THINK THEY ARE ENTITLED AS A UWI GRADUATE LIKE A BADGE OF HONOUR.
    NSTEAD OF WORKING THEIR WAY UP FROM THE BOTTOM AS HOW IS DONE IN THE US AND UK FOR EXAMPLE.
  30. Well, UWI really scraped the bottom of the barrel to have your do tutorials.
    From your renderings here we can’t be surprised at the quality of students coming from there.
  35. DLP still in limbo after meeting
    There may be yet another twist in the tale as it relates to the suspension of Democratic Labour Party (DLP) general secretary Steve Blackett.
    Members of the executive huddled in discussion yesterday at party headquarters less than 24 hours after it was disclosed that Blackett had been suspended from his position after weeks of internal wrangling during which Blackett publicly and harshly criticised newly-admitted Ralph Thorne who defected from the Barbados Labour Party in February.
    Yesterday, a well-placed source revealed that some high-ranking members of the party’s administration were viewing the general council’s decision to punish Blackett with suspension as invalid.
    At the end of the executive’s three-hour meeting at George Street, Belleville, St Michael, on the issue, the party’s communications officer, Stacia Browne, told the waiting members of the media that “there was nothing to report at this time”.
    It is understood that Blackett is out of the country on a personal matter, and efforts by the Saturday Sun to reach the embattled general secretary have been unsuccessful.
    DLP president Dr Ronnie Yearwood also remained tight-lipped on the issue when contacted.
    However, the source said that the decision to suspend Blackett occurred after Yearwood, who was chairing the general council meeting, adjourned it.
    “The decision cannot be legal; the meeting was adjourned by the president because the meeting was getting a little bit rancorous. A member moved the adjournment for the meeting, it was seconded, and the meeting was adjourned. They then proceeded to install the fourth vice-president to continue the meeting and then they proceeded to suspend the general secretary when members had gotten up from the council after the meeting was adjourned,” the source said.
    The member contended that there is no provision within the party’s constitution to suspend any officer. Additionally, questions were raised about the application of natural justice as Blackett was not present to answer the charges.
    ‘No power’ “The general council has no power to suspend any officer and what they were told is that they would need to go to the executive council first, which would create the room for suspension and then send it back to them. The second thing is that you can’t just suspend a man while he is overseas . . . . You are trying to suspend a man who is not present to defend himself, nor does he have any legal representation, all the things afforded by the constitution,” the party official said.
    “The meeting of the executive council this evening [yesterday] will address this issue. They have no authority to do this, the general council cannot discipline an officer, there is no power within the party’s constitution. Steve Blackett is going nowhere, they were warned multiple times in the meeting that the motion has no validity, yet they did it anyway,” the source said.
    The suspension announcement was made on Thursday night by assistant general secretary Pedro Shepherd whose elevation to fill the post was also confirmed at the same meeting.
    In a statement issued from George Street, Shepherd said the general council “unanimously moved and adopted a motion to refer complaints regarding the general secretary Mr Steve Blackett to the disciplinary committee of the party. Mr Blackett has been suspended from his office of general secretary, pending the conclusion of the investigation”.
    On April 21, Blackett moved a motion of no-confidence in political leader Ralph Thorne and one of confidence in Yearwood.
    “This party existed and was making good way for the past six years and we did not have a political leader. This party can exist without a political leader, but it can’t exist without a president, or I dare say, a general secretary,” Blackett said at the time. ( CLM)
    I contest that Ralph and the Old Guard possess regressive characteristics and are boils that need to be lanced as they are exhibiting the first of septicemia. Sepsis is a medical emergency and can cause shock (called septic shock) and organ failure, which can be fatal in up to half of cases. This depends on the type of germ involved.
    Obviously, DLPs mission statement should be to attract and not repel the voters away but they are acting like single cell amoebas. Amoebas are single-celled microbes that “crawl,” and sometimes, can eat your brain. Amoebae do not form a single taxonomic group, instead, they are found in every major lineage of eukaryotic organisms. We consider some emergent properties in the motility of Amoeba Proteus in its reactions on attractants and repellents.
  43. Last/Last
    I believe we should discuss issues holistically, rather than ‘one sided.’
    “Okay, we are criticizing the quality of the product.” Yet the “quality” is acceptable enough for the “product” to gain entry in international universities to undertake post-graduate studies, or employment in overseas companies, where they excelled.
    I’ve read similar arguments and criticisms on BU about CXC. Every year, students are awarded Barbados Scholarships and Exhibitions, many of whom opt to attend foreign universities (upon which you ‘heap praises)’ to pursue degrees that are not offered by regional tertiary level institutions.
    Surely their applications would’ve been rejected if those universities did not recognise CXC qualifications.
    On ‘one hand’ we talk about entrepreneurship and “graduates taking the country to another level.” But, ‘on the other hand,’ we criticise the difficulties experienced while trying to conduct or establish business in Barbados…… or securing financing.
    Does Barbados have an entrepreneurial culture?
    How is it that those same ‘useless’ UWI graduates, who are often scapegoated by the BU intelligencia, living in countries where they are motivated to be innovative, creative and take risks…… or as employees, encouraged to brainstorm new ideas or “high end products,” are successful in taking their ‘adopted countries’ or firms “to another level?”
    How can there be “innovation in tourism,” when local graduates are not given an opportunity to be innovative?
    Hotels in Barbados, “are always unable to receive suitable applications for their advertisement for the position of ‘x, y, and z,’ and have to apply for a work permit for a non-national to fill the position.”
    There was a BU a thread on May 1, 2024, ‘discussing’ this issue?
    “Innovation in music and education” are topics for separate discussions.
    Although UWI may have “drastically increased its rate of matriculation,” the fact remains that if a student is unable to maintain the requisite minimum grade point average per 2 semesters, he/she has to ‘withdraw’ from his/her course of study and reapply one year thereafter. Unfortunately, there isn’t any guarantee he/she will be reaccepted.
    For example, we need to compare the number of students entering the university with those who are graduating, taking certain factors into consideration, such as, those who withdrew on their own volition or were forced to withdraw…… or due to various reasons, some full-time and part-time students may not complete their course of study within 3 or 4 years respectively.
  47. Blackett stays put
    That’s the decision of DLP executive after vote
    by COLVILLE MOUNSEY colvillemounsey@nationnews.com
    THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has voted to maintain Steve Blackett as general secretary, a well-placed source has revealed.
    It is understood that a letter is to be dispatched to the General Council of the party informing the members that their decision to suspend Blackett “has no validity”. Further, the source revealed that the Executive Council will meet this week to determine if a General Council meeting scheduled for Thursday has been lawfully summoned.
    It remains unclear which decision will stand, as even though the General Council is the highest decision-making body of the party, the Executive Council has the responsibility for the administrative daily functions of the DLP.
    When contacted yesterday, DLP president Dr Ronnie Yearwood said he was not commenting on the issue, while the man appointed by the General Council as acting general secretary, Pedro Shepherd, was equally tight-lipped.
    Back on Thursday
    “I can tell you that Mr Blackett is scheduled to be back in the office on Thursday and he will remain in place as general secretary. The Executive Council will send a letter to the General Council informing them of the decision before the scheduled meeting on Thursday. I am not sure how a meeting of the General Council could have been called by anyone other than the chairman of that body, who is also the president of the party. It is all left to be seen how things will unfold this week,” the source said.
    Members of the executive huddled in discussion last Friday at party headquarters less than 24 hours after it was disclosed that Blackett had been suspended from his position after weeks of internal wrangling, during which Blackett publicly criticised newly-admitted Ralph Thorne – who is both Opposition Leader and political leader of the DLP – after he defected from the ruling Barbados Labour Party in February.
    Another well-placed source, whose comments were published in the last SATURDAY SUN, revealed then that some high-ranking members of the party’s administration were viewing the General Council’s decision to punish Blackett with suspension as invalid.
    The source said the decision to suspend Blackett occurred after Yearwood, who was chairing the General Council meeting, adjourned it.
    “The decision cannot be legal; the meeting was adjourned by the president because the meeting was getting a little bit rancorous. A member moved the adjournment for the meeting, it was seconded, and the meeting was adjourned.
    “They then proceeded to install the fourth vice-president to continue the meeting and then they proceeded to suspend the general secretary when members had gotten up from the council after the meeting was adjourned,” the source said.
    The member contended that there is no provision within the party’s constitution to suspend any officer. Additionally, questions were raised about the application of natural justice as Blackett was not present to answer the charges.
    The suspension announcement was made on Thursday night by Shepherd.
    On April 21, Blackett moved a motion of noconfidence in Thorne and one of confidence in Yearwood.
    “This party existed and was making good way for the past six years and we did not have a political leader. This party can exist without a political leader, but it can’t exist without a president, or I dare say, a general secretary,” he said at the time.
    “I will not stand idly by and allow Mr Ralph Anthony Thorne to drag this party down . . . . All he has brought to this party is confusion, destruction, turmoil . . . . Thorne could have stayed within the ranks of the BLP. He has brought trouble to this party . . . and I am begging him to let my people go.”
    ‘Trouble in de camp.’
    Blackett was reinstated simply because the process leading to his suspension was ‘unconstitutional.’
    Seems as though the ‘old guard’ are determined to ‘get rid of’ Steve and Ronnie and prepared to use every means necessary, whether ‘by hook or by crook’……. or ‘by fair means or foul’…… in order to achieve their objective.
    Blackett’s comments and no confidence motioned filed against Thorne, clearly indicate a compromise or resolution anytime soon is highly unlikely.
    Thorne said the real enemy on which the party needs to focus is the BLP.
    This is the same man who, until approximately three (3) months ago, was among ‘friends’ in that political party, the policies of which he supported.
    Ironically, ‘the DLP was (his) real enemy’ at that time.
    Ralphie left his BLP friends, who ‘are NOW his worst enemies,’ to join the DLP, where became ‘FRIEND and FOE’ at the same time.
    This is ’nuff, nuff sport.’
    Let’s hope this is not a ‘marriage of convenience.’
