The politics practised in Barbados is based on the adversarial system borrowed from the colonial master. There is the opposite more consensus (constructive) type of politics but such as approach seems esoteric and anathema to who we have been educated to be.

The first past the post system gives the victor the spoils and leaves no room for political parties to meaningfully collaborate on issues of national importance. To observers a key differentiator between political parties in the adversarial system is the ability to generate criticism even when it is not warranted. The result is a torrent of vacuous commentary useless to adding value to what is required.

There is a thin line to observe when critiquing the ability of a people in a well functioning democracy the right to dissent that has oversight for the collective. The challenge will always be the ability of the national leadership to contribute to an ethos that encourages cognitive reasoning.

We enter a period of transition to a Republican style system to signal to our people we must be craftsmen of our fate to continually search for ways to unshackle our minds from mental slavery. Whether in thought words, deeds and use of symbols educating our people that indigenous and original thinking must define and give vent to who we are as Barbadians must be prioritized. This critique must extend to the system of politics influencing how we govern.

In simple analogy, if there is a tumour in the body the best chance of survival is to remove it. If we survey the social and economic landscape of Barbados it is honest to surmise that there has been an alarming degradation of systems and quality of life for Barbadians; there is an inertia that breaths life to the cliche we suffer from implementation deficit, a casual acceptance that indiscipline in our people is reflected in wanton lawlessness; crime, disrespect for the environment and so on. To the detractors, quality of life is based on the criteria of the human development index.

To fundamentally change anything one must effect changes at the root cause. The governance system has relaxed to the point people participation is only required when the political class calls an election. Placing an X on a ballot is just one means of citizen participation in a healthy democracy. We have to modify the current system of governance to encourage every day citizen participation. We must be able to leverage from the majority of what is deposited in the national knowledge pool. The culture of secrecy by central government and the public service, a legacy of our colonial past has to change.

Nearly 50 years our elected officials (DLP and BLP) have avoided enacting and operationalizing transparency legislation. Talking heads from both political parties and members of the political class present ‘compelling’ reasons why the legislation and supporting activity has not been implemented AND we supinely accept it. Who should be blamed for the current state of affairs? The politicians mirror YOU, YOU, YOU. We were raised in the same neighbourhoods, attended the same schools, hangout in the same bars and restaurants, marry into families. Politicians are not aliens, they are born from the same environment we are part. For there to be meaningful change YOU, YOU and YOU must lead the CHANGE.

You, You and You must become more involved in the running of the country. Demand more from our leadership via the channels available, protest action and other forms of civil disobedience. Disengagement is not a sensible option.

  2. It seems the easiest way to run down Black leadership in Barbados is to be anti-Black emulating white folks chatter and tropes as there is a rich vein of racist propaganda psyops and brainwashed prejudicial thinking to tap into like institutional white supremacy to justify treating blacks less than dogs up to the push back against Obama and the white come back of Trump Farage Johnson.

Maybe a better solution for a small place like Barbados is make everyone stakeholders who can contribute to Parliamentary investigations for Government Agendas to include public and all shades of politicians contributions and keep business money interests from lobbying and bribing ministers. There will be many changes coming such as in areas of law and family courts human rights and addressing wealth inequality socialising services for poor etc.

We must not forget that the POWER lies in the hands of the governed, and no kind of sustainable Transparent piece of Legislation will prevent a willing Elected Official from undermining the system.
However, history has taught us that Social Protest and Civil Unrest, are the tools in the arsenal of the Electorate, which can bring about a change in the existing state of the political affairs.

  4. A peaceful revolution occurs when 10s or 100s of 1000s are saying the same thing singing from same hymn sheet
Revolution may be needed to fight against That Hideous Strength but the system has designed to work within it for change rather than from outside outside law as out laws.

In still racist UK the push back against Historical Legacy of White Supremacy and removing statues of racist figureheads has been to outlaw Cancel Culture and keep the statues of racist white cunts as that is what the racist rightwing white boys in power want.

  6. Always on about Engerlund, stupse.

Is Engerland dat got people tekking 5 an 10, pun each house, that got people carrying way back handers from contracts? That make people arrogant as soon as they are elected?

Stupse. No, is human greed and stabbin they own.

    Learn commonsense, do.

  7. People power needs to be involved for change to take place
Take the example of Nelson and other historical monuments which exploded a growing sentiment against half truths and false information feed to the masses world wide by the powers that were and are in controlled which came toppling to the ground in rumble amidst the chants of rebellion
Here in barbados people took note
The same energy that can effect historical change must be used towards political elected officials at home that are bound and determined to keep the people feet hands bound and chained to a system bound and determined to keep them in servitude
Let mental freedom be the guide towards justice

  8. “Always on about Engerlund, stupse.”

  9. Simple observation

Until we find ways and means to harnessed the passions and desires of man, man will forever continue to be corrupted because of his inherent faults and failings.

So we must then ask the question as to why government was created in the first place? Government was created because those same passions and desires of man will not conformed to the dictates of reason and justice devoid of constraints.
So therefore, man need some level of oversight to bring his sin nature under of control, and the institution of government was designed for this primary purpose.

A first that occurred after 30years that of a police officer being gunned down at the hands of criminal al thugs
How long would the voices of the people remain silent
This is not who we are

  14. @Observing

Our predicament supports the search for the charismatic leader able to burn through petty partisan nonsense of this adversarial system we are saddled.

    A la Singapore?

  15. 555dubstreet

No it is not the legacy of Colonialism that is at the root of the, but a far more fundamental problem in my estimation; it is the problem of European Intellectual and Cultural Imperialism. It is the
elimination of what Europeans termed, Primitive Cultures, with their scientific and technological and advanced European ones.

  16. There is much in the article that I agree with. Where I have difficulty is that essentially our failures are assigned to ‘YOU, YOU and YOU’.

Though my fellow Barbadians are not champions of change or agitators, the failures must be assigned only to our system and our leadership.

Currently, the people have power exactly one day every five years. And when that day passes then we see a deaf leadership emerging and doing exactly what it wants.

Power to the people comes through upgrading the systems with
    Integrity legislation,
    Transparency or sunshine laws
    Respect of the citizens
    Just laws and sentences ….

The reality is that the people have the only the ballot. Let’s not confuse their impotence with inaction

  17. TheoGazerts

I chuckle when people start to employ the perennial dictum: Integrity Legislation and Transparency. Name one such integrity legislation and the kind of transparency that will deter those who were inducted into offices of trust?

  19. TheoGazert

The Integrity Legislation you have spoken of has to be sustainable, because those in trusted offices will find ways and means to circumvent or undermine such legislation.
Moreover, the American system of governance operates on a sustainable trajectory, because if a Power Broker circumvented, undermined or violated an established ethic rule, another rule is enacted to prevent a future occurrence.

  20. “It is the elimination of what Europeans termed, Primitive Cultures, with their scientific and technological and advanced European ones.”

you’ve been bamboozled like a minstrel on the black and white minstrel show and too stupid to recognise they made up the simplistic rules where they are the winners, like white South Africans saying that blacks are inferior and if you let them on to the beach they will shit everywhere. If you truly knew white people you would realise that you can wipe them off the floor as inferior and negative users and abusers with devious minds that cannot function at a higher level for the betterment of humanity, the planet and the universe.

Whites were dirt poor starving and killing each other, pagans and heathens with no soul or spirit.

  21. People have the power
    Only action sends a message
The ballot gives a certain measure of control
But the power shown by action is the only power the political directorate understands
How can 166sq miles of 2hundred and 75housand voices remain stoic bewildered and confuse while hell breaks out around them
All can be a,Moses having the ability of striking a rock with a heavy rod

  22. “Another first for this blp govt. A first that occurred after 30years that of a police officer being gunned down at the hands of criminal al thugs.”

Seems as though the usual suspects are seeking to politicize last night’s unfortunate slaying of the off-duty police officer.

Okay, according to the media, Acting Station Sargeant Lewis was the first officer to be killed in the line of duty in 30 years…………. since 1990 killing of PC 898 Marlon Marville by then 17 year old Carlisle Payne.

Guess which political party ‘was in power’ in 1990? You guessed it…….. the DLP.

If we follow Coxy’s logic, then that killing would have been “A first for (that) DLP govt.”

The second police officer to die in the line of duty occurred in 1993. Sargeant Peter Springer who was off-duty at the time, succumbed to stab wounds inflicted by a mentally unstable individual he was attempting to apprehend.

Again, guess which political party ‘was in power’ in 1993? The DLP.

That means this “was another second for (that) DLP.

Perhaps Coxy’s time would be better spent if she concentrated more on focusing her attention on AG Marshall’s apparent disinterest in the escalating crime situation in Barbados………

……. rather than engaging in silly, nonsensical political games.
    .
It has already been proven she is an extremely poor ‘spin bowler.’

    Another first
    Not fake news either
    Coxy say so

  24. “Now all are at lost as to how govt going find resolutions to runaway crime on the island that has average more than fifty murders last year”

Your mind is simple and not complex.. but at least you have forgotten about Covid blaming while running with crime shaming

Crime growing and other shit happens regardless of who is in Parliament during specific terms

it is like saying when you were mugged by a gang of thugs you blamed incumbent Government

  25. I never said that crime would not occur
However taking this week as an example
A week of ongoing crime activity and one which gives thought to asking of govt what plans does govt have on hand to tackle this ongoing crime wave
This week shows that their is a criminal element that is sophisticated which after the damage is done
Leaves govt staring like deer in the headlights

  26. What is your solution to stop crime.
Get Tough on Crime Political Agendas don’t work and is just grandstanding for votes / opposition mouthing.
Criminals are tough too and adaptable working the angles looking circumventing Police efforts.

  27. Police generally don’t stop crime, they investigate a crime after the event has occurred.

  28. Your problem is you always present a narrow political perspective to every issue, thereby confining them into a BLP versus DLP scenario. This prevents you from engaging in rational and reasonable discussion.

You want to give BU the impression that since May 24, 2018, crime suddenly increased. The progressive upsurge in crime is not specific to any one particular political party, as you’re implying, but spans over successive BLP and DLP administrations, all of which FAILED to adequately address the issue during their tenures.

What we’re experiencing is as a result of those failures.

Instead, we had AG’s from both political parties arguing about which party was responsible for supplying the police with vehicles, while moral steadily declined as a result of political interference. I’m sure, for example, you remember the going controversy of promotions.

Yes, I agree with you “this govt speaks of a lost decade.” The previous DLP used similar metaphors to describe the BLP’s 14 year tenure. And, should the DLP win the 2023 general election, I’m sure its members would find terms to describe Mottley’s 5 year tenure.

This is what the BLP and DLP do. Despite criticizing each other, they REMAIN friends, while operatives such as you and your BLP cohorts who are contracted by the respective political party, are encouraged to come to BU and ‘fight’ against each other…….. giving the appearance the rivalry is ongoing………and making yourselves look silly in the process.

  29. @Dompey
I agree with the thrust of two of your posts.

We have to move in a series of steps. Let’s get some rules on the books and then enforce them.

Unenforced rules and no rules results in the same state. But if you have rules on the book then there is something to break and something to enforce.

Let’s try to change the status quo.

  31. The next progression for Barbados will be garrison behaviour given our willingness to distil ALL issues via narrow and partisan lenses. We should take notes from the Jamaica experience, we are not too far behind.

  32. Jamaica garrison behaviour goes further than partisan
Such agression is caught up in the winds of poverty whereby a stronghold between political inaction affect the most vulnerable lives who seek a safe haven amongst the underworld for survival
Partisanism is not absent from other democracies and there is no evidence provided to say that murderous rampage is because of partisan politics
In Jamaica where crime is above level red
The drug element is where such evidence is provided because of the high levels of poverty

  33. The quinquennial games, the first past the post and winner takes all ensures that we will always have this adversarial relationship.

Do you think that if the DLP spend 10 to 15 years of famine and then gain control of the feeding trough that they will not gorge and fatten themselves?

Do you think that when they look at the plump and well fed opposition that they will be contented to remain lean?

RE: “You are the head honcho fighting against comments. I speak my peace and move one outside of you wrestling with my every comment to which on occasion I reply.”

You are a notorious liar. “Wrestling with your every comment” what!!! You are a semi-literate, appallingly ignorant, politically motivated buffoon who cannot spell or write a proper, coherent sentence. You rely on the comments of other BU contributors or what you read on social media, to construct your contributions.
Anyone could tell whenever you or someone else wrote a contribution posted under your name.

However, I must remind you this is ‘Barbados Underground,’ a PUBLIC FORUM……. and NOT ‘ac, angela cox, angela skeete, Mariposa or Coxable Underground.”

As such, you cannot stop me form responding to your usual irrational, misleading, one dimensional political shiite, whenever I feel like. ‘Put that in your pipe and smoke it.’

RE: “There is no one more ferocious to a point of bullying that reacts to every word said by different views.”

More ‘shiite talk.’ I can present instances where I did not mention your name in my contributions, yet you took it upon yourself to respond, and was always quick to include the word ‘fool’ in your responses.
Please indicate where in my comments I have been “ferocious to a point of bullying,” or is it that you’re upset when someone highlights your political hypocrisy or regurgitating the nonsense spewed by the pretend limey humbug?

RE: “When u start to point a finger one is pointing back at yuhself. Better yet take a look in the mirror.”

You should take your own advice.

As long as people understand that the Jamaican garrison culture was born out of dangerous government ministers keeping Black communities in deliberate poverty to raise slow thinking yardfowls/Slaves and evolved into dangerous uncontrollable violence just to win elections so they can continue selling out the Black populations and enriching their bribers and themselves……just as is happening in Barbados….that will also escalate into extreme violence and death….let that sink in..

  36. Angela Cox represents what this submission is all about. SHE is the YOU YOU YOU.

Artax, the man with the facts, Sadly she is too one-eyed to see clearly in the mirror.

As long as yardfowls exist so shall our toxic political climate exist. A few thousand clucking fowls for each party makes the political leaders forget that they are only extras in the international arena – not mentioned in the credits.

Their only chance at the stardom they crave is to take this 2×3 island with little to no natural resources and make it a model of success against the odds.

Look at the attention Mia got in the early days of the Covid crisis!

Our small size can be an advantage with the right mindset.

“Little island, Big Barbados” can become a reality rather than a ridiculous sounding slogan.

    But….

No, but some are always blaming England. The island’s leaders have had 50 years to be accountable.

The issue is with leadership and culture, not England.

The England aspect is historical and does bear on the culture, but if it continues to burden the country, the leadership has failed to build a framework to move forward.

..no one can live comfortably on the island without a significantly LARGE INCOME….

the youths are hungry and will kill for food to survive, thanks to sellouts like this one and the honorable Slaves who don’t know that consumer protection should have been an every day occurrence for the past 30 YEARS…and not only when he is pimping for new members to pay fees.

.and them pimping votes for election 2023.

In addition, the largest trade union body in Barbados said it will be establishing a consumer protection body within the NUPW to act in the best interest of all public servants and workers in the wider Barbados.”

Not even a Columbus-type arrival at El Salvador can save Mary Jane’s sorry ass in backward Barbados.

As on Observer looking in from afar, it seems Barbados’ problem is not about joining the Ganja Business Bandwagon to make some bread, but stems more from not smoking it as Jah Jah planned it to open the doors of perception with a higher level of thinking, and, drinking the booze instead which has the opposite effect of loosening tongues and inhibitions but making people stupid and less able to think.

I didn’t read the article about Clarke’s Booties as Guardian have got a firewall up that requires you to log in. I got a brand new ID but they disabled my account from commenting after making 1 comment and can only read their crap without commenting. They remember your IP address and put you on pre-moderation and will never release comments if you are more liberal than them and speak truths about white peoples racism as it gets their back up and white people and spies complain automatically and religiously, but, worse than that they will get you added onto an IP blacklisting service that is flagged on the net and tars your name on the net for 3 months, and when that is over they will repeat the process again. On the plus side Guardian are going bankrupt and out of business.

Anyhow the Clarke’s book originally came out in 2012 so is old hat and this is an updated edition, but, some of use are reggae and dub specialists in jamaican dancehall culture by going to dances back in the day, and, don’t need media or books whitesplaining things that they overstand and can write own books on.

you need to do a more forensic analysis of the smuggling business instead of painting in broad brush strokes

Barbados is small fish in the big picture.

International Crime Syndicates who make billions use local agents in Barbados to ship drugs to USA and guns are another part of contraband assets. By arranging several containers of guns and drugs through the ports to go via Barbados to USA they are paid in cash, or guns and drugs which need to be converted into cash in local markets.

What you call “CRIMINAL MINORITIES” are big money businessmen and when one syndicate gang is removed another steps in.
