The past two weeks has seen a national pause and a furtherance of the pause. What are the actual goals of the pause? What are the goalposts for re-opening? What are the goals for tourism? These are all valid questions and I think they should be asked and answered. Before answering it is pertinent to see what other Caribbean jurisdictions which are considered as world class as Barbados are doing.

Barbados Population 285,000

  • Cases daily 30-60
  • Masks – everywhere
  • Curfew – 7pm to 6am
  • Schools – closed
  • Economy – mostly shut down, supermarkets open M-F 8-4
  • Activity – Beaches and parks 6-9am
  • Tourism – PCR test to enter, antigen test at airport, 5 day hotel room quarantine, test followup
  • Airlift International – 3-5 flights per day
  • Positive Covid on Island – Residents & Tourists sent to government isolation facility for indefinite period of time no matter what their symptoms

Costa Rica Population 5 million

  • Cases daily 300-450
  • Masks – indoors
  • Curfew – None
  • Schools – Open
  • Economy – Open – everything open
  • Activity – everything open
  • Tourism – NO PCR test required of anyone
  • Airlift International – 20-23 daily flights
  • Positive test In Country – isolate at home, only sick people go to hospital

Aruba Population 105,000

  • Cases daily 20-50
  • Masks – indoors
  • Curfew – 11pm
  • Schools – Open
  • Economy – Open – everything open
  • Activity – Everything open
  • Tourism – PCR test required 72 hours old
  • Airlift International – 24-30 daily flights
  • Positive Test in Island – Tourist and Locals isolate at home, only sick people go to hospital

I think it is quite evident to see that in Costa Rica and Aruba we have governments that are managing Covid and the economy. They are not banning tourism and have come to the realization that Covid is an endemic respiratory virus that you should not be destroying your economy over. The per capita case numbers are the same in all 3 countries. It is the response that is clearly different.

It is probably shocking for many to see that you can fly to Costa Rica without a PCR test, that everything is open and somehow the country has not had a medical or economic collapse.

It is my opinion that this government is acting in an irrational panic rather than managing the issue. The country always praises its robust health care system, which has been bolstered by the arrival of 120 Cuban doctors and nurses. Harrison’s Point offers a large enough facility to house all the truly sick people from infection. I feel one of the biggest mistakes is taking every single sars-cov2 positive person into isolation. The data from studies in China and by the WHO now clearly show asymptomatic transmission of Covid is miniscule (roughly 3%). Needlessly putting an asymptomatic 37-year-old into isolation simply strains the resources of the facility. Not to mention the fact people are being taken away definitely makes them hesitant to go for tests or to share health information with others.

Barbados is better than this peripatetic response seen these past 2 weeks. Sars-Cov2 is here and is going nowhere. Locking up people in their houses until February 28th is not going to change anything.

It is time to do the following.

  • Open up the entire economy immediately
  • Open up all the schools to in-person teaching – this sacrifice of our children’s education over a respiratory virus will be the shame that will be focused upon in the history books
  • Open up tourism – Go with a 72 hour old PCR test on arrival. This is truly not needed as Covid is here and endemic, but for a couple of months it will appease a portion of the population. However, the point is there is no need to worry if 1 of 100 tourists arrives here with Covid when 5-10% of Bajans are testing positive for it.
  • Isolate only sick covid patients and focus health on them
  • Continue with a rapid rollout of the vaccination program, ensure enough vaccines arrive by the end of March for everyone who wants one to receive one.
  • Start a public campaign to truly educate people about the disease and the management plan
  • Encourage mask use indoors only – outdoor mask use is nonsense and everyone knows it, by dictating such a policy it discourages people to listen to the valid pronouncements of public health authorities
  • Stop this nonsense of stores and businesses testing their entire staff if someone tests positive for sars-cov2. If a supermarket in Florida has a positive test, they don’t shut down the market and test the 200 employees. It makes absolutely no scientific sense and actually has been discouraged by the covid task force. It should be mandated that it should not be done. This would be simple by not allowing the Beth Dos Santos Lab to process any tests from such establishments.

The above are simple and will lead Barbados out of this COVID situation much faster and more robust than any national pause.

  1. Something positive to copy instead of the haphazard, helter skelter crazy that the island has devolved into….because of greed for measly tourist dollars.

    https://barbadostoday.bb/2021/02/22/johnson-sets-out-englands-lockdown-exit-plan/

“SOURCE-REUTERS – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out a phased plan on Monday to end England’s COVID-19 lockdown, offering a “cautious” approach to try to prevent a return to wholesale restrictions that have hobbled the economy.

Johnson, under pressure to allow more freedoms to millions stuck at home and offer hope to shuttered businesses, said the first stage would prioritise schools returning on March 8 when only minimal socialising outdoors would be allowed.

The so-called roadmap would then pass through four stages, with five weeks in between, and the final step, when most restrictions would be lifted, not starting until June 21 at the earliest.”

  2. Political Propaganda / Conspiracy Theories aside, it is clear that although Covid is a “Black” Threat Level Alert and Clear and Present Danger, Governments of the world are also using the crises to further their own hidden agendas and ulterior motives, such as UK implementing it’s NWO Spy State ambitions which was the problem – reaction – solution paradigm construct from all it’s manufactured dubious wars this century under the guise of fighting terrorism while secretly enabling it.
My gut feel is MIAs objectives are more altruistic and is protecting her community and possibly overprotecting them to save lives.

  3. I looked at Costa Rica number for a 5M population and scaled them down to a 300K population.
It is a crude method, but I am getting that we would have 12K cases and 166 deaths with a Costa Rican policy.
    Total cases
    203K ====>12k
    Deaths
    2,782 ===>166

Here are Aruba’s numbers with a population that is a fraction of ours
    Total Cases
    7,692
    Deaths
    71
Multiply by 2 or 3 if you want the corresponding Barbados numbers for the Aruba model.

By now you should have realized that at the end of all this chatter.. some don’t care if you live or die.

  4. At some point there will be an appreciation for the delicate balance public health leadership/government must be able to manage.

    Grasshopper

How does your model work on Dominica with 0 (as in zero) deaths?

… or on Bhutan with 1 (as in one) deaths?

How does Aruba get its water?

Check and see if you don’t see a desal plant!!

“Aruba is a Caribbean Island located eighteen miles off the coast of Venezuela. The Island is extremely arid, with no natural fresh water source available. The Island is dependent on seawater desalination to meet its entire potable water requirements”

No doubt you would have heard or read somewhere about the hydrogeologic cycle.

I did that in 2nd form at HC.

All the water on the land that doesn’t evaporate ends up going back into the sea … that includes sewage!!

Here are some pretty pictures for you to ponder!!

  6. While 99 % of the population has access to a known supply of domestic water, only 82 % of the population has consistent access to potable drinking water. The potable water supply is smaller in rural areas. Three percent of sewage in Costa Rica is treated before release to the environment.

  7. UK’s second lockdown which started at start of December off and came off the back of several local regional “bubble” lockdowns withe tiers is being rolled out in opening the country in a piecemeal long drawn out staggered strategy by businesses trades industries and social activities. Johnson is playing and tripping on a power game like a police state and cannot be trusted and people should get disgusted so he is busted.

I am about to do the following exercise routine so if anyone across the cities mountains beaches and oceans beyond the horizons over in barbados or americas or around the world on planet earth wants to synch up energy collectively they can also join in and watch or follow the practise together. Sometimes these instructional videos are removed after a week so strike while the iron is hot.

  8. …”long drawn out staggered strategy” …

  9. The lives of Bajans are precious and cannot be sacrificed to the greedy ambitions of those who are only interested in mass tourism as an extractive industry. Our government is trying to balance the need to keep people safe and alive with the need to keep the labour force employed and productive. There may be undesirable outcomes from time to time but nobody can truthfully say that this is a do nothing government with respect to the fight against covid19. This country must not be bullied into false steps by people who are only interested in their financial well being and are willing to sacrifice the lives of Bajans in pursuit of their greedy goals. The lives of Bajans matter and the minister of labour must be proactive to defend the interests and rigets of Barbadian workers in this pandemic atmosphere where workers are more easily threatened, exploited, abused or prostituted.

  11. From todays pronouncement from BAMP or more exactly the president of BAMP we see the Covid goalposts that have not even been set, are now moving to a spot even more impossible to reach
    https://barbadostoday.bb/2021/02/23/lifting-lockdown-not-limited-to-numbers/
Seems like the R number or cases are not good enough for the President – I say president because as with any organization the rank and file may not be in 100% agreement with her.
The observation here is that a doctor or epidemiologist looking through their highly focused lens on ONE outcome – no covid – is going to suggest impossible goals. If we told her we don’t want any cancer in Barbados as the ONLY ONE goal, she would also come out and ban 80% of the food we eat, force everyone to walk 8km a day, ban alcohol and smoking with prison sentences (as we now have if god forbid you are out at 8pm) and have the entire population prodded, probed and tested for cancer on a monthly basis. I say this in jest but you see where things can go if you give a person a singular goal with no restrictions on how to reach it.

We currently have no goals, no direction and no exit strategy. This is a fact. I am not saying do not give a voice to BAMP, but put that voice into a choir where we listen to all.

  12. @Richard

Is there a country where there is consensus on Covid 19 public policy?

  14. From the BTMI and the BAMP we have an industrial strategy that is not based on reality and ensures the eradication of all tourism to Barbados.
    https://barbadostoday.bb/2021/02/23/btmi-chairman-believes-barbados-should-market-to-vaccinated-tourists/

They both seem to be holding on to the quarantine stick. To re-iterate a simple missive, water flows to where it is easiest. Tourists will go to where it is easiest. Covid has not decimated Barbados tourism industry, the actions of the government in asking for PCR test and PCR test and locked in a hotel room for days on end are what have caused a 96% decline in tourism.

I don’t know if we have to point it out but tourism is actually on the comeback everywhere in the Caribbean. The PM and this doctor and BTMI are trying to paint a picture that the entire Caribbean are in some 96% down death spiral. This is far from the truth. The ABC Islands are currently at 45% capacity. Mexico’s resorts are operating at 45% capacity as is Costa Rica. Jamaica is at 30% and the big elephant in the room – Florida – is booming at 75% capacity. Try to find a place for spring and March Break in Miami and Ft Lauderdale!
None of these places have quarantine, all except 2 (Mexico & Costa Rica no test) simply ask for a negative PCR test.
These countries are functional and scooping up short-term, long-term and mid-term tourism.

Maybe the head of the BTMI is continuing to speak of quarantine for political reasons, but as a business policy, if I was a hotelier or airbnb host in Barbados (which I am not) I would be planning an exit strategy as I have been given a road map to oblivion from her.

Final question, why are people taking a vaccine for the dreaded Covid and still you want anyone flying into the island to go into quarantine? We know that even with vaccine people will get the dreaded Covid (just like the flu). Hmmm

@TheOG you don’t have to go any further than that “crude” calculation to dismiss the original poster’s arguments. When I see these “contributions” I get pissed and ask if persons really think through the entirety of the situation. Also they are not letting it sink into their brain, the seriousness of this virus. No gov’t EVER wants to harm its own economy. However ,we have seen, from the biggest Covid disasters in the world, what happens if there is an over-consideration of economic interests. The situation gets so out of control that the Covid disaster itself hurts the economy and cripples the health care system. The ability to turn the situation around becomes an STEEP UPHILL climb. It is a simple case of managing out a situation. Barbados does not want a situation get too far out of control to cause a crippling “covid crisis”.
Also the simple fact that testing a set of people is basically sampling. A lab simply cannot sample 100% of a population in a day. If there are x amount of cases from a sample then you can do some sort of extrapolation as to how many undiscovered cases that are in society. This is the basic reasoning behind why certain cities and states in Australia and New Zealand resorted to snap lockdowns after a few DETECTED cases. With community spread of THIS PARTICULAR VIRUS, Govt cannot have too many undetected cases at any one time in a population as dense as Barbados.

  16. Mia is also criticised for opening up the island for tourism. You can please some of the people some of time and some of the people all of the time but you cannot please all of the people all of the time. Barbados is a small place and just a dot on the globe and could become a ghost town with no tourists or people if covid spreads and beds in.

  17. @ RICHARD PETKO February 23, 2021 8:58 AM

The international market decides, not our native masses or their representatives. Remember this well, because the island belongs to those who make all the money and transfer it to Barbados.

When the first stage of the vaccination campaign is completed worldwide in the late year, Barbados will allow vaccinated tourists into the country without quarantine. For the other islands with which we compete will do so. No ass will come to us if we put people (as some racists on BU suggest to establish a “pure” island in the sense of black nationalist socialism) in medical concentration camps for two weeks while Jamaica has the big party.

If our so-called experts continue to torture the tourists who are vaccinated, we will end up like all the other third world hellholes in poverty and despair.

  18. I’m sure business owners of hotels and tourist spots will happily sacrifice front line workers to maintain their income streams as they are cheap and disposable and easily replaceable and who needs pension funds when workers have limited life spans like slaves and die on the job prematurely as only the fittest of the fittest survive in these times down in babylon. Brother Kiki, some of us BU readers might quite ‘au fait’ with the programme of ‘blue’ British slang and compendium of cussing colloquialisms.

But a significant number, like our “Cuhdear Bajan”, are naively unfamiliar with such colourfully blue-blooded British military expressions.

So here is the cussing blue-blind Bajan fisherman’s equivalent of your gassing off.
To quote one of the more sophisticated speakers in the Bajan Parliament:

Here is a possible explanation of the casedemic up your side.

Check the cycle below and see if it doesn’t fit the likelihood of the virus being in the drinking water.

The second and third “waves” I say are due to the virus getting into the sewage and potable water supply after the first wave.

Once it is in the sewage and drinking water then it continues to infect people after the first wave.

People then spread it by face to face contact and the number of cases rises.

    Lockdowns ensue.

There is a fall in the number of cases but there is more virus in the sewage and water system.

    This infects more people.

The numbers of cases rises and people infect one another by face to face interaction.

    The third wave occurs.

    Lockdowns follow.

More virus gets into the sewage and hence the potable water.

    … ad infinitum … unless …

Someone needs to set one single goal, eradicate the virus from the drinking water.

I can accept that the virus is in the sewage system. I can also accept it can be passed on as it is airborne, what I cannot understand is what are we aiming for?

Are you suggesting to both David [BU] and the wider BU audience that the Covid-19 virus and its mutant strains can be found in the seawater off Barbadoes since the country’s sewage is dumped or eventually finds its way into the country’s coastal waters?

Are you indirectly saying, also, that the water used for domestic purposes and extracted from the country’s (BWA maintained) reservoirs has been infected by the same Covid virus?

I urge people, please don’t follow John Boy down the rabbit hole ( or asshole in this case). He is suggesting that even if there is a cross pollution of sewage with ocean water \ water in aquifers that it would survive the desal or chlorination process. This is on top of the fact that being in water viruses cannot survive (far less multiply) for an extended period. And on top of the fact that cooking involves boiling of water or using some sort of heat. If there was evidence of this, why are there no large scale cases of cholera or typhoid. John Boy is just sharpening his skills being the resident BU comic relief.

  29. @Hal Austin February 23, 2021 10:40 AM

With respect to the COVID 19 the GOALS and VACCINATIONS objectives have not yet been established in any world jurisdiction. The present objective is to prevent or at least lower the death/sickness rates, ie: remedial actions. As time moves along and the various remedial actions are assessed then ultimately an overall goal maybe established. It is much to early in the pandemic cycle to determine long time goals, were still in the bandage stage.

  30. @ Wily

Understood. But because goals and vaccinations objectives have not yet been established in any world jurisdiction does not mean that in Barbados we cannot aim for such objectives.
However, I am sure you have read about Boris Johnson’s and Nicola Sturgeon’s plans for a gradual removal of the lockdown; the aim of this is to achieve herd immunity, when the economy will return to full operation.
Is stage is meant to act as a circuit breaker, combined with the roll-out of the vaccination. That is why there is no Big Bang.
By the end of April England should be back to normal – depending on the rise of new variants.

  31. The issue for Barbados and other small players- the date when significant vaccines will be procured/secured is not known re COVAX arrangement and other shipments.

If you can accept it is in the sewage system you have to accept that it will be in the potable water too because the rivers in the UK feed the water treatment plants which supply the potable water.

I remember seeing a documentary on the Rhine in Germany and always remember the remark that the water that some one consumed upstream is consumed once again by someone downstream!!

The sewage is treated and, the waste water is raised to an acceptable level of quality and then discharged …. where do you think.

We are lucky here, we have one well source which provides a small portion of our daily water needs that is fed directly by “filtered “raw sewage”” and we can get by without it.

    Not so the UK!!

The UK should put in a BWA, Boil Water Advisory for citizens in areas where the casedemic is raging.

Otherwise, it is likely the cases will once more start to rise.

look up drug distribution curves to get the general idea

  43. So… John has moved from speculating to concluding. And nobody in the UK has figured it out yet!

Big up de Bajan Johnnie! Who needs all those UK johnnies! Not one brain between the sixty odd million of them!

And they say no good can come out of Barbados!

World class by the 2×3! Punching above our weight!

    Murdaaaaaah!

  44. Boosters to combat variants?
such agents would have to be modified to be efficacious …they would have to be able to combat pathogenic variables demonstrated/exhibited by the variant …..just like how flu shots are varied annually

  45. Who is Richard Petko? What is his relationship to Barbados? Why is he inserting himself so determinedly into Barbadian matters? Why does the COVID strategy of this little 2 x 3 occupy his mind so? What is his interest in infiltrating the minds of Barbadians to influence our thinking? What is his goal?

These are the questions that occupy Miss Marple’s mind everytime she reads his frequent offerings on this topic.

    Who? Why? What?

And weh he now come from?

  46. I don’t mind what nobody say if the objective is to stop people from mixing well none of wuuna ain’t went to any of the following.

    Pricemart
    Cost u less
    Massey warrens
    Popular
    Massey big b
    Massey sunset crest
    Cherish
    And on and on.

All this pause has done is cause massive crowds at supermarkets. I don’t know when wunna will learn you don’t threaten bajan access to food!

Now as for closing the supermarkets on a weekend that is double nonesence. All that has done is cause massive crowds on Thursday and Friday and Monday and Tuesday. I just past Massey warrens and pricemart and the line wrap round the building.

So open the dam place with the usual hours and enforce the protocols and mask wearing do that.

In closing wunna realise before the lock down you could of walk right into Massey and the rest with no line or crowd? Wunna want more proof than that to confirm lock downs don’t work? As i said already anytime wunna impede the natural flow of water it does bust bank and look for somewhere to go, or it does back up and when you open the blockage you got a flood to deal with.

I beg the big brain people get in you big suv and take a drive and see what happening is the opposite of what wunna thought would happen.
