The social partnership is not ‘white people,’ it comprises of three distinctive groups, representatives of trade unions and employers.
Mottley opened her press conference by saying she met with the social partnership, president of the DLP, leader of the opposition, BAMP, etc. That was something they have been calling for. I’ll bet you anything, they will find something about that meeting to criticize.
They can only try at this stage. It has to be phased in.

Truth is the PM has little option now but to do this. At least this time the supermarkets will stay open from 8 to 3 Monday to Friday. The pharmacies will be open so it’s not a full shut down. Banks closing is a problem for business but let’s hope it’s only a week.
I think once she does not create panic by going back on what was said tonight and then closing the supermarkets things will be manageable. Major blow for the economy again sadly.

I beg to differ. It is monthend same as last lockdown which is normally a busy time and they supermarkets already on reduced hours with the 9pm curfew.
They needed to learn from last time and leave the supermarket hours the same to avoid the crunch.
I now have to try to figure out what groceries and dog food I need to last a whole month cause they shutting down the village shops so I cant even go supermarket to get large stuff and walk to the village shop on a weekly basis for smaller stuff like corned beef, biscuits and rice.

It is obvious that the closure of small shops , is keepiing in step ,with the general feeling that the people are not following protocols. It is a “partial” shut down in the truest sense of the word. However it’s a national crisis and the business people are opposing the shutdown but the air and sea ports will remain opened. Also note that the vendors are going to be shut down, this will drive the agri business almost totally into the larger players hands. Also the PSVs will be back to carrying 60% of load., this will also impact their operations. Somehow a total shut down to carry out a more intense reset has not met favour with the Social Partnership.

I already have enough cleaning supplies and dried peas and beans on hand. So I can make soup, stew food, cou-cou, porridge, bakes. I bought too much meat at Christmas, still trying to work my way through it. Bought tuna and sardines for the hurricane season. Still have some left
My shopping list:
Fruit: bananas, oranges, apples, or whatever is cheap and available. I may not even buy the bananas because I typically get some from an English “returning national” friend
Vegetables: carrots, sweet peppers, tomatoes
Milk
Juice: unsweetened orange
Flour

WHAT IS RESTRICTED USE IN EMERGENCY SITUATION?
COVAXINTM is permitted for restricted use in emergency situation under Clinical Trial Mode. My problem is I shop for a week but they are forcing me and other people like me to shop for a whole month because they have significantly cut supermarket hours during lockdown (7-3 weekdays, closed weekends) and closed village shops so there are no other grocery shopping options resulting in long lines at the supermarkets from now until the lockdown is over.
I fully expect them to extend it another week on the 15th but I will wait and see.

I used to be paid monthly or every two weeks and did a family shop once or twice a month. I overdid things a bit at Christmas as family gatherings were much smaller than usual and smaller than I anticipated so I still have some of December’s things left.
For me it helps to keep a running list and as soon as I run out of an item or am almost out I add it to my list.

I think that once they increased the curfew hours to start at 7 pm they had no choice but to shorten the supermarket hours too. As David says it will be tough on the vendors and based on the new protocols, few tourist will endure that. However those that already are booked will come. As for the restaurants i wonder if drive through outlets will be open or will they be grouped with indoor dining? I guess that will come out over the next few days.
It is tough on the small businesses for sure as many of them haven’t recovered from the first shutdown yet. The thing is when you put all the politics and fowlism aside what was the alternative? I trust that we will hear what the fine will be for persons found not wearing masks or wearing them on their chin or with their noses out.

The behavior of the leader of the business grouping within the Social Partnership is most appalling. He gets out front and sets the pace and then the politicians fall in line.
We also have an economics consultant behaving as if he is the Minister of Finance. Under no circumstances should he be speaking ahead of the Governor of the Central Bank or the PM who is also the MOF.
I thought that the Social Partnership would put its position in the meeting and when a consensus is reached it would speak with one voice. But this be Massa calling shots as if he faced the damn polls.
The only two prime ministers who have ever told these new Massa to shut up are Erskine Sandiford and Fruendel Stuart.

India signs purchase order with Serum for AstraZeneca vaccine – source
MUMBAI/BENGALURU (Reuters) – India has signed a purchase order with vaccine producer Serum Institute to procure AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, a source said on Monday, the first step in one of the world’s largest vaccination programmes against the novel coronavirus.
Local television channel CNBC-TV 18 said the order was for 11 million doses and the government would buy the shots at 200 rupees ($2.72) per dose.
The government has also signed a purchase agreement with Indian firm Bharat Biotech for its COVID-19 vaccine, the news channel reported, citing unnamed sources.
Representatives for Serum, Bharat Biotech and India’s health ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
India aims to secure 600 million doses for its vaccination drive that aims to inoculate 300 million citizens over the next six to eight months. The programme is expected to begin on Jan. 31.
India’s drug regulator had given emergency use approval for both vaccines earlier this month. Two other vaccines – Zydus Cadila’s ZyCoV-D and Russia’s Sputnik V – are still in trials in India.
Meanwhile, the government’s decision to approve the homegrown Bharat Biotech vaccine has met with criticism from health experts for the lack of data showing its efficacy.
At nearly 10.5 million, India has the world’s second highest number of novel coronavirus infections behind the United States, although its rate of increase in cases has been slowing.
Our government is doing everything right. The main thing is to keep the tourists coming because they are our main source of income. When everyone in the US and UK is vaccinated in the summer, it’s time to start the cruises again. Optimally, there will be 10 cruise ships docking at the pier per day. Also, starting in summer, we should ramp up tourism to 100% for all those vaccinated from the US and UK and dispense with any kind of quarantine.
The remaining low infection rate is then a negligible risk in the range of a statistical detail.

From what i understand when the Covid force was making their checks quietly they found that the small shops had basically no protocols in place. There was no sanitizing at the door and things like that. The reasoning it seems they went this road was at least at the supermarkets protocols were being observed like spraying the trolleys, sanitizing etc.

The country is in crisis and one would expect ALL sectors to be in line. Don’t you understand that the small village shops are vital to the economic lifeline of some communities?
While we are aware that the government is in a difficult place it must never be seen that one group is getting what it wants while the other is being treated rather harshly.
You would note that all of your suggestions and ideas have been ignored because there is no real effort to change the economic course with or without COVID. And that is what we are ashamed to admit. Whether we like it or not , it is business as usual.
You have pointed out different courses that have could have been taken. How can you now ask , what else the government can do? You, for months , have been telling them.

I think that a well focused shut down, say two weeks , would have been more effective for a more precise reset.
However , we have to hope and want the

We are operating in unprecedented times. Unfortunately it has been some of the mom and pop outfits not adhering to the protocols. That said it will be hard on those at the lower end of the scale. Unfortunately it is one of those zero sum scenarios. Very unfortunate.
Our government should get the vaccine and then flog it to tycoons, expats and tourists for $1000 a can. At a purchase price of 5 USD, we make a profit of 995 USD. With 100000 people willing to be vaccinated, this makes a net profit of more than 90 million. Or even better, our government offers a vaccination trip to Barbados on its own at a fixed price of 10000 USD per person. With this, we could increase the profit into the billions.
Of course, we would need a suitable advertising slogan for this. How about: Barbados: “The health paradise for the rich”?

Good grief. It is two weeks people. That is exactly what Hal recommended and I agreed.
Tomas shut the island for the same sort of period. People have earthquakes and have to survive for months waiting for relief.
Two weeks is going to destroy people? The government said that care packages will be delivered to the vulnerable.
It is best to do two weeks, then implement strict protocols thenceforth, than have this thing knocking around and blowing up.
Baje screaming about no shutdown in his city, nor curfew. But what he is not telling us is the number of new cases and deaths daily, in his city.
Half a story can be misleading. Be careful using them, unless a teacher is trying to get students to use their imagination and finish it, they can cause trouble. Maybe that is his sole aim.
And here is one such half a story. People complaining. But do you really think that the government will shut so, without advice from the medical people recommending? What does that tell you?
They should really tell you about the serious cases, because I bet there are. But then wunna would panic.
But I would tell you. If that is what it takes.
