INTRODUCTION
• I have a great fascination with the short, one chapter books of the New Testament, and always teach them first in any program on which I embark.
• My love relationship with the book of Philemon began in 1977, when I first studied this gem to teach its truths to the young people of Mona Heights Chapel at a weekend camp that was to have been convened to celebrate my return home to Barbados from among these Brethren with whom I served while a medical student in Kingston, Jamaica.

  1. We hope when Pachamama takes Her vengeance against those who would despoil the youth with lies that there is no gnashing of teeth.

The hottest fires are reserved for this Porgy.

  2. The Most High God intentionally chooses the most unlikely people to accomplish His purposes: a destitute lowly teenage girl with no resources as the mother of God in the flesh; dirt poor carpenter Joseph as the foster father; young uneducated shepherd boys as the first missionaries, two elderly people in the temple near death as the first witnesses; and three wealthy kings who lived 1,000 miles away, as the first worshippers. Scripture constantly reminds us He does not call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Notice all the poor people responded immediately. He does not save the self-sufficient, and proudly self-reliant, but only the needy who know they need a Savior.

Although there were others in Jerusalem looking for redemption, The Lord in His infinite wisdom, chose to reveal the Messiah only to Mary and Joseph, the fetus John the Baptist still in the womb; two very old folks in the temple on the verge of death; several young, poor, shepherd boys; and a few very wealthy Gentile wise men in a distant country. All of them are the most unlikely people chosen for revelation.

Two thousand years later, you are indeed blessed, that the Holy Spirit of God has revealed God’s salvation, the Messiah, to you. The thoughts of many hearts are now revealed! Herod’s heart was certainly revealed when he heard the news! He was ready to kill Christ. All the evil spirits recognized him, but not one evil man!

God chose a woman who was very poor and He knew she could only bring the minimum. And yet, He chose her anyway. Sometimes God intentionally chooses folks like us who can only bring the minimum, either because of poverty or physical limitations, or lack of talent, or anything which would normally disqualify us for special agent work. And yet we’re the ones he picks. We’re the agents he chooses to bless others. Isn’t that just like the Lord to pick the unqualified with the minimum, instead of the qualified with the maximum? That’s what he did with Mary. That’s what He can choose to do with us.

I wonder if the Holy Spirit of God isn’t teaching us dramatically, that it takes longer for the wealthy and educated to come to the Lord Jesus. As I noted before, all the poor people responded to Christ immediately. Have you ever wondered why the celestial extravaganza show of angels in the sky only appeared to the poor shepherd boys, and not to the Chief Priests and wealthy educated Elders of Israel? I think it’s because unlike the shepherds, they would not have told anyone. They knew their colleagues would have ridiculed them.

Whereas, Isaiah prophesied, “they made His grave with the wicked-But with the rich at His death”. It was only after Christ died that the wealthy Joseph of Arimathea took courage and asked Pilate for the body of Christ, wrapped it in a fine linen cloth and donated his rich hand-hewn tomb for Christ. It was only later at the end of Christ’s ministry that educated Nicodemus came publicly by day-not secretly by night–and brought 100 pounds of myrrh and aloes to His burial. The wealthy and educated seem more reticent to identify with Christ the Lord, and to be more sensitive to the judgment of their rich educated friends. Whereas, all the poor and needy came to Christ immediately, and then told others. Perhaps the Wise Men showing up several months later, is a vivid portrayal of the extra time the wealthy and educated take to finally come to Christ.

His first Advent was Christmas. His second Advent will begin with the rapture of all believers snatched away alive to Glory. I pray that you believe this Good News and we will see you in Glory with the Good Shepherd who gave His life for the sheep. Because as the angels promised: He’s the Savior, Christ the Lord. The Son of the Most High, The Lord God. The King whose kingdom shall never end. As Simeon prophesied: this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel and the falling and rising of many throughout the whole world, and for a sign which is spoken against.

Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Today, the thoughts of your heart are revealed by either your belief and acceptance, or your disbelief and rejection, of the Savior, Christ the Lord.

  3. We were also taught to believe that Jesus was a White man with European like features
That story was implanted in the minds of many believers from the time of youth
A white baby in a manager is still the accepted norm in many churches during the celebration of the Xmas season
If the church cannot dispel this untruth why should the youth of today belive any thing which the church teaches as the word of God

I do not know where you went to school or church. Neither of those two institutions that I attended/ attend taught me that Jesus was a white European. When I did geography, I could never associate Jesus as being white or European. He and his earthly parents would not have been able to fade into the racial landscape of Egypt to avoid the slaying ( ordered by King Herod )of the innocent infants in 4 BCE.

  5. Sir the Church did not verbally teach about Jesus ethnicity
However the depictions and many statues placed in Catholic and Anglican. Churches of Jesus sent that message
One would have to be very foolish not to see those statues and not come to a distinct conclusion of the message sent about Jesus ethnicity

  8. Vincent,

The images of Jesus were all white. The visual effect is more powerful than many than words.

Indeed, even though geography enlightened me at an early age (though silly me, I never even thought about the need for blending in with Egyptians) that mental image has not been erased, no matter what my conscious mind tells itself it must do. I am always annoyed with myself whenever the fake image appears and it has no effect on me otherwise but it probably still does on many.

And the fake image still remains in paintings, statues, stained glass windows. Quite disgraceful really!

  9. Correction- more powerful FOR many than words

  10. Why is it that the question of Jesus ethnicity has been a well kept secret among many churches maybe can be placed or traced to a climate of superiority and racial prejudices within the church
Notice how long it took the Catholic and Anglican churches as well as other Christain churches to give blacks posts as bishops and other areas of the church that places them in the forefront of teaching or preaching christain doctrines

In CE 2021 the products of our education system should be thinking for themselves. Blaming others for our short comings is unacceptable. There is far too much mental and material dependency. It defeats the purpose of our Government’s expenditure on Education. Secrets? What Secret?Seems more like Scape Goatism.

  16. Vincent your kind of thinking is what has lead to youth distrust of Adults
You states that an educational system today borne on sufficient Knowledge should be enough to teach and dispel
How about the older generation who still hold on those beliefs
What is the responsibility of the church in teaching a doctrine that speaks to such truths

It is the responsibility of youth to distrust adults. I am not a youth and I do not trust all that you keyboard;and for obvious reasons. My education does not allow me to. My objective is to hold a mirror before you and ask you if you are happy with the person you see reflected. The mirror helps you to see how others see you. If you are happy with your image, so be it. I have discharged my responsibility.

  25. So what is wrong with questioning a persons identity
Worse yet when those preaching the gospel speaks of truth

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Are you implying that the whole ‘Jesus’ story as recorded in the “English” King James version is nothing but a ‘concocted’ myth?

Do you also admit that poor little Mary could never have been the mother of “God” and that those pretending to be the ‘white’ Jews of today could never have been the descendants of those enslaved in Egypt as recorded in the same KJV based on your knowledge of Geography and Anthropology and clearly could never have been of European ethnic origin?

BTW, why would your Yahweh allow the slaying of innocent little [Jewish] boys just to protect one little baby Jesus when he could have simply sent a plague to get rid of Herod and his people as he did with the Egyptians in the form of the ‘Passover’?

The KJV is a translation ,which I am sure you know. It is rather strange that some commenters would want to fix the Bible’s origin in Europe. How European depicted Jesus was the vehicle to convey an image to their ethnic group. I am sure the Coptic Churches including the Russian would have biblical characters depicted in dark browns with tightly curled hair. This,I think, you already know. You seem to be fairly wide read. However some of us tend to emphasize the dinner ware and not the food contained there in. Doing so we miss the boat by centuries,if not millennia. Telling stories is how ancient scribes and teachers conveyed fundamental truths. The secret is always to ask what is they trying to convey to me the reader or audience.

  31. Pondering and wonderings on reaching the mountain top
What would have been the result of white people seeing the light of truth about a black or brown Jesus who came from Palestine. When the Slave Tribe of Jews were led out of Egypt and bondage by Moses there were other people who were their friends who accompanied them to the promised land. It is not true whites are hostile with hate and no love to everyone like they are with coloureds as I have seen whites speak to complete strangers who are white like they are best friends or family. Would they have rejected Christianity with contempt if they were told and believed the messiah had dark skin and caught the sun. Which brings me back to my earlier musings are they the Devil’s children as they war and want to rule in dominion like the fallen angel Satan who wants your soul and his brother Dracula who wants your blood and body. They branded Africans as their property and forced them into submission. Is pale white skin superior or inferior and what about the foreign mind. The colour of your skin and texture of your hair and contour of your nose does not make you a man. These questions are not so much about spirituality, but more about humanity and society in which we dwell and liberation from fucked up religion with social rules to keep you in your place.

“Telling stories is how ancient scribes and teachers conveyed fundamental truths. The secret is always to ask what is they trying to convey to me the reader or audience.”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Indeed!

That’s why ‘objective thinkers’ should see the fables in the KJV (mostly stolen from Egyptian and other Levant cultures) as mere guiding principles to human morality; like the ‘Golden Rule’ which can be found at the heart of all religions.

The ‘good-guy self-sacrificing’ character of Jesus the Saviour can be found represented in many religions across the globe but especially depicted in Christianity-the most popular modern religion in the West- as the Apollo for the current Age.

The Jews already have their own saviour(s).

Maybe Jesus is no longer relevant to the European culture and could easily be replaced by a new ‘icon’ in the image of Steve Jobs or his Barabbas Bill Gates or even Mark Zuckerberg as a saviour to be idolized for the Information Age of Aquarius.

Maybe black people ought to invent their own Apollo icon in the image of Marcus Garvey or Nelson Mandela [the Christ] for ‘their’ New Age of economic and political liberation.

  33. Vincent,

I don’t blame anyone for my shortcomings but I do know that some still have that white Jesus in their heads and it has an effect that it does not have on me. Not everyone can figure things out for themselves.

The Bible is obviously not European in origin but it was introduced to us by the Europeans and was used as a tool of oppression. Some find it difficult to seperate the two.

And yes, stories were the way ancient people conveyed truths. Made it interesting, easier to relate to and remember.

  34. One must separate the stories appearing in the book of lies from the actual compilation by the Piso family of popes. Who were Europeans.

In the first case no one here is contending that many narratives in the book are not stories which were told, and we have original records predating the bible by tens of thousands of years, oral traditions etc to show that the bible was plagiarized by the Europeans during what we call the Dark Ages, circa 500 AD to 1500 AD.

And we have traditions appearing ten of thousands of years before there were any humans called Europeans and then all of a sudden those same traditions pop up all over a socalled holy book by a particular set of people. Common sense demands and careful research requires that we see this as a criminal attempt by Europeans to steal other peoples culture, insert themselves into the story because they had no god consciousness of their own. This is still true today.

  35. William Shakespeare the lead translator of the book, male “lover” of King James, now widely considered along with Bob Dylan as the greatest writers of the Western world, King James who refused to allow Shakespeare to add his name as co-author, but Shakespeare who left a secret code as revenge, could not have imagined the pervasiveness of his work on the culture of humanoids.

  36. Vincent Codrington Avatar

    @ Donna at 6 :54 PM

    I concur.
We have to take responsibility for what we believe. We must keep our minds and hearts open to accept truths when they appear. We can only do this at the personal level. If it is consonant with the perceptions of others ,so be it. But make sure your convictions are yours. Own them.

If you were a bit more knowledgeable about Barbados history you would not make such an uninformed comment.

You need to pay more attention when I write!!

Firstly, I saw with my own eyes the procession in Cuzco when I went hiking to Machu Picchu and the effigy of Jesus on the Cross was black!!

Peru was Roman Catholic from the 1500’s.

Also, since early Barbadians were Puritans or Quakers, it is absolutely impossible that there would have been any stained glass windows knocking about in Barbados prior to emancipation.

Puritans sought to purify the Anglican Church of Roman Catholic influences and Quakers did not go in for effigies or stained glass windows.

They worshipped in people’s houses or plain meeting rooms which are now all gone.

You will probably find the stained glass windows in the Anglican Churches that seem to have left such a lasting impression on you from childhood occurred after emancipation as the Anglican Church rose to prominence and the old ways were abandoned.

Remember also, all churches in Barbados except St. George, were destroyed in the 1831 hurricane.

For the 200 odd years before emancipation, it would have been unlikely that any slave in Barbados would have seen any image of Jesus Christ.

So the belief by black people in Barbados that Jesus was white did not start in the days of slavery!!!

  41. The portrayal of Jesus as a white, European man has come under renewed scrutiny during this period of introspection over the legacy of racism in society.

As protesters called for the removal of Confederate statues in the U.S., activist Shaun King went further, suggesting that murals and artwork depicting “white Jesus” should “come down.”

His concerns about the depiction of Christ and how it is used to uphold notions of white supremacy are not isolated. Prominent scholars and the archbishop of Canterbury have called to reconsider Jesus’ portrayal as a white man.

As a young child i remember seeing many barbadian homes having the famous Last Supper picture of Jesus and his disciples being white

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Who painted the Last Supper?

    Leonardo Da Vinci!!

    When?

    1495-1498!!

Barbados was essentially Protestant, Puritan/Quaker for the first 200 years of it’s existence, 1627-1687.

This would not have been an image that would have been displayed during the days of slavery here!!!

This is too simple and basic a truth to even dispute.

If you were a child prior to 1827, you would almost certainly not have seen such an image anywhere in Barbados.

Were the homes you saw the image in “black” or “white”?

I have been in both and can’t remember seeing such an image.

I have been in some Anglican Churches and seen the Stations of the Cross where Jesus is portrayed as “white” ….one of the differences between “High” Church and “Low” Church Anglican!!

  45. To claim that Roman Catholic imagery would have been portrayed in Barbados during the times of slavery is lunatic and is as far as can be imagined from the reality of the times.

If the members of your church are European, is it useful to depict Jesus as a middle Eastern ,North East African man?
One paints what communicates to the viewer. The message is important not the conveyor. That is the reason why race is not mention in many books of the Bible. The writers were happy with all ethnic groups.

One of the points John always makes is that the Quakers steadfastly stuck to the principle of the Judaic Law not to” make any graven image of God”.
To set up a straw man of Jesus ethnicity is a distraction from what his mission was about. You do know better. It is always easy to blame others for our failures ,is it not?

  48. I grew up as a very ardent Anglican until I was 16. So ardent was I that the rector had been down to be a priest.
Unlike St Lawrence (attended briefly) both St Paul’s and Christ Church were high church, and I attended stations of the cross at both.

I was never taught that the Lord Jesus Christ was white or of any particular hue, in my youth, and I have never thought of it throughout my earthly sojourn. I guess this is because as J Vernon McGee would say ONE MUST KEEP THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING, AND THAT ONE MUST STRESS THE ESSENTIALS RATHER THAN THE INCIDENTALS IN ONE’S APPROACH TO STUDY OF THE SCRIPTURES.

It amazes me that every week a stellar exegesis of a passage of the sacred scriptures is presented, but the subsequent discussion is always far of base.

Didn’t such a treaty result in the ‘de facto’ Independence of ‘English Royalty’ Bim by telling the Puritan Cromwell to piss off?

How come there is an Anglican Church in every parish named after some Catholic/Anglican patron saint except Ch Ch?

Who were the political movers and shakers that effectively outlawed the Quakers from ‘practicing their brand of ‘Protestantism’ hence, their secret meeting places?

Weren’t similar banning orders in place against the Roman Catholic Irish shipped to Barbadoes for their heresy?

How do you explain the presence of very old tombs in the Saint John Parish Church yard containing the remains of the fabulously wealthy members of the planter class and political elite including those of Ferdinand(o) Paleologus “descended from Ye Imperial Line of Ye Last Christian Emperors of Greece”?

BTW, since you are so au fait with Leonardo the openly gay genius and his “Last Supper” painting how many women/angelic-looking transgender men can you spot among the 12 “male disciples?
