The decision to have a national TV debate between the candidates contesting the St. George North constituency seat has been mired in controversy from the beginning. The result is that of the six candidates registered to contest the seat made vacant by the ‘retired out’ Gline Clarke, only candidates Toni Moore (BLP), Grenville Phillips (Solutions Barbados) and Alex Mitchell (BFP) are the three left standing. The other candidates have offered excuses for not participating, the blogmaster suspects the real reason is that there is a fear to speak to the issues publicly in an independent setting.

It is ironic that the current week has seen Barbados experiencing heavy rains which must be negatively affecting house to house and platform campaigning. What an opportunity tonight’s debate offers to convey respective party messages to SGN residents while in the comfort of their homes.

  1. The problem as it stands with people and am not only talking about this instance, but as long as they DON’T FULLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS SAID…and by nature and indoctrination cannot keep an open mind….the person delivering, is always deemed crazy or mad….especially if it’s someone who has LIVED IN BIGGER COUNTRIES and have had exposure to certain elements..

some call it limited exposure to logic that causes the close minded not to see reality….others call it something else…

well ya know yardfowls like Sheman Spike Lorenza are a special breed of idiots, so whatever they spew is expected and entirely predictable….they are losers indoctinated from way too young…

    LOL

The blogmaster cannot stop himself from laughing.

  4. @Peter

This matter was prosecuted on BU years ago. We all make mistakes.

  5. Is Junior’s proposal to train people in basic skills in two months feasible. In the old days an apprenticeship took five years; in the UK, in the 1960s, during a skills shortage, training was provided in six months. Now Junior is saying he can reduce that to two months. Will trainees be externally tested? What about risk?

  6. @William

The same media that you et al ridicule daily on BU’s pages?

  7. Verla smiles gladly
    Media the biggest losers
    Mitchell upstage the candidates
Dont think many took him seriously as this has been a series of repetitive talks heard across social media for years
However glad he got the platform to air the distasteful under ground belly of the system
Moore was unconvincing with a delivery of Moore for less

  8. Well FB is going off…ya should see the comments….lol…

…. they wanted live debate with their pretentious selves and they got one….be careful what you wish for…

  9. Distasteful and tacky that pit toilets are STILL a political talking point being used to catch votes and the GULLIBLE DECADES LATER…….and spread out on FB…people are like…what the hell have these LYING ASS politicians been doing with the billions and billions of dollars of taxpayers and pensioners money all these years that they are still talking about pit toilets…..in 2020…oh yes, people remember…

well i said;…a pit full of shit always sounds good to shit dwellers in the parliament..

  10. PLT…i never read the story before, but heard the details, apparently he was arrested in HIS OWN HOUSE…as happens in US on the regular and the case was dismissed…

  11. Mariposa we will see if Ms Depriza will be smiling after november 11th.Everybody knows why the dems refused to debate which Mr Reifer is extremely poor at debating .No amount of spin from you will change that.Heaven knows how he will fare in parliament if by chance he is elected as there is no hiding place in there.

  12. David,

You have a very backward idea of madness.

  13. Toni Moore says her background is HR. I thought it was trade unionism. Is she mixing up the two?

  14. Anyone can tell you that i don’t like getting involved in the land stuff, but if this dude was lying, should’nt Mia or the others whose names are being called AS THIEVES who robbed these two elderly ladies and their beneficiaries their MASSIVE ESTATE….. have come out by NOW and DENIED EVERYTHING BEING SAID….wuh, it’s been years and years now the accusations have been on social media. All i’ve heard so far is everyone involved sayig that it’s all true, but the TIEFING LAWYERS/ministers and tiefing minorities are looking for ways and means to ESCAPE….that’s what people have said without deviation….so am believing them..

    Monday, November 15, 2004
85 yr old Violet Beckles produced deeds showing she owned the famed Kensington Oval, the mecca of Caribbean Cricket. Thats just one of almost 200 properties in the islands commercial hub which Beckles claims she received ownership through a will from her Aunt, Beatrice Henry.
Beckles attorney, Dr Lenda Blackman, indicated work already begun to collect rents owed and monies paid out in the past for a number of her properties.
The purported will, dated January 17, 1984 was prepared by attorney Frederick Smith (now Sir Frederick). Current Barbados attorney general, Mia Motley, reviewed the documents back in 1990, before her current appointment, and confirmed Beckles as the beneficiary of the will.
The Governments Urban Development Commission (UDC) recently got drawn into the controversial situation when it was reported the UDC paid 86 million to others for property that belong to Ms. Beckles. This may require the UDC pay a second time for the property.”

Everybody in SGN should vote for Mitchell to get him access to Parliament Privilege.

Imagine the excitement and comedy if he was to get Parliamentary Privilege. Parliamentary debates would be lively again.

  17. I have my suspicions, but why was Mr Mitchell’s sound always freaking out?

  18. Watch from 5.25 of the video.

  19. “Parliamentary debates would be lively again.”

    free entertainment…

  20. @Peter J Lawerence shame on your self-righteous ass. De man did not thief and taking a stand does not make him a criminal. Why de ass you don`t dig up who have bribe money in offshore accounts

  21. It is obvious that after the shock of first Cow licks the paralysed personnel finally sprung into action and muted Mitchell’s microphone to protect themselves from potential lawsuits.

If Mitchell wished to dig at Cow and Co. I could have shown him a way to do it without getting cut off. THE MAN IS A BLUNT WEAPON.

  22. Correction – sprang

  23. @Donna

What is the forward thinking definition of ‘mad’ in the context of a registered candidate vying for election to parliament. The blogmaster knows that Mitchell is doing this for the platform of promoting his land theft message.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

They probably started out completely live but after the Mitchell horse bolt hard from the barn, they had to run quick and put the delay and mute button back in during the commercial break.

  25. How many votes did Alex pick up last night?

  27. The Debate – An Analysis.

The debate is finally over, and criticism of the debate has already begun. Allow me to share some inside information to facilitate a fair criticism.

The moderators assigned to the debate were David Ellis and Julius Gittens. They have demonstrated their capacity to ask relevant questions, and manage debtors with diverse personalities and agendas.

When they later declined to participate (after the PdP pulled out, and the number of debates was reduced to one), someone had to moderate, or the debate would have been cancelled. With time running out, Emmanuel Joseph stepped forward.

CBC facilitated the debate. The ideal situation would be for debaters to appear at CBC’s studios in the Pine, where they had the capacity to manage all foreseen risks associated with broadcasting a live and unscripted debate.

To have six potential debaters complying with the COVID-19 distancing protocols, CBC used the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. This was a logical choice given its proximity to CBC’s Pine studios. At a preparatory meeting held to discuss the debate, the UPP, DLP and PdP requested several changes, which were generally accommodated.

Candidates were given a deadline to respond, so that the numbers could be confirmed, and logistical decisions could be made. Before the deadline, Solutions Barbados, the BLP and the BFP agreed to participate. After the deadline had passed, the UPP and DLP went to the media and said that they would not be participating.

While arrangements were being made for four debaters, the PdP, who had agreed to participate, later decided not to.

The Candidates had three different and consistent styles of responding to questions posed. Toni Moore generally responded to questions at the level of Government policy. I generally responded to questions at the level of implementation plans. Alex Mitchell generally responded to questions at the level of justness.

    JUDGING.

People tend to judge a debate performance by both the content and delivery of the responses. Some may weigh content higher than delivery and vice versa.

Toni generally provided reasonable content and good delivery. I thought that my content was good, but my delivery could have been better. Alex did not pull any punches on his content, and his delivery was somewhere between mine and Toni’s.

Emmanuel Joseph stepped forward, at the eleventh hour, to do the job previously assigned to two professional moderators. He did a decent job. He asked some questions that could not have been anticipated, many of which were submitted by the public.

We were literally and figuratively forced to answer unforeseen questions on our feet. We could not ask for a few seconds to formulate a logical flow in our heads. We just had to open our mouths and start speaking. We had to do this while appearing to be in control, and thinking of a logical flow of sufficient information in our heads, to allow us to speak fluently for 2 minutes. That is no easy task for those not used to debating.

All Candidates who participated demonstrated the capacity to think on their feet, and present a logical two-minute argument. This was the first such political debate that any of us had ever participated in. I can understand why the UPP, DLP and PdP candidates were overcome with fear, at the thought of being put in such a situation.

CBC did an excellent job under the circumstances. The cameras, lights, and technical personnel were not intrusive. I mostly forgot to look into the cameras, and had to remind myself to do so.

Had the UPP, DLP and PdP confirmed their absence at a reasonable time, CBC could have accommodated the three Candidates at their Pine studios, for which they had full management and technical control for an unscripted debate.

Had the professional moderators showed up, they could have managed the styles of each debater, and forced us to debate each other. There are many lessons that can be learnt by all parties.

I trust that this information allows people to better appreciate the challenges of the debate.

Grenville Phillips II is a Chartered Structural Engineer, and the Solutions Barbados’ candidate for St George North. He can be reached at NextParty246@gmail.com

LOL… David respectfully said … but reading that piece from Phillips suggest that as many noted the debate was a freaking waste of time and energy.

Either that or he is making some serious “excuses “.

  30. The UPP, DLP and PdP were not overcome with fear. This is a fabrication. They did not participate because they felt it was silly, entertainment, a circus, to make CBC seem relevant.
The moderator (chairman) lacked the necessary skills, but that is a fault of Barbadian journalism. And, the overall quality of the discussion was poor. Mr Mitchell was relevant because of what he had to say. I am not sure if it was only me, but a lot of what he had to say was not heard.

  31. PM of the day should not have only “asked cow to stop”, but also gone to DPP as he was hounding others to do and have cow’s ass LOCKED UP FOR ROBBING BLACK ELDERLY PEOPLE and their beneficiaries and then BOASTING with lies about how wealthy he is and how he owns half of Barbados WHILE KNOWING that he stole it from the real ladies who do… …..the weaklings for leaders were part and parcel of those thefts, that ‘s why all the thieves are walking around without handcuffs.

these are the same frauds who tell you…if ya have evidence of a crime TAKE IT TO DPP…..so how come none of them did that while knowing that CRIMES against two elderly helpless ladies were committed…

  32. Even worse, the police themselves HAVE ALL THE DOCUMENTS required to make arrests in the Violet Beckles land theft case, this is YEARS NOW…..wonder who bribing them, not to make arrests..

  33. David,

The new understanding of madman accepts that a man with a few screws loose may still have many totally tight ones in particular areas. Trust me. I know. I have dealt with such a family member all my life. Functions way better than average in many, many ways. I could not keep up or match her. But in other ways… totally delusional and obsessive and stemming from one psychological root cause.

But…what does his reason for entering the fray have to do with the truthfulness of his debate offerings?

  34. @Donna

    Noted.

  35. @ David,

Did you listen to 20 seconds of the COW video I posted ?

  36. @Hants

Have watched many times, you will recall it is a video you have posted many times.

  37. @ David,

I promise NOT to post that video again.

  38. @Hants

It was not a criticism, just a long winded answer to say yes.

  39. I BELIEVE THAT THE VIDEO WAS PURE STAND-UP COMEDY.

I HAVE NOT LAUGHED AS HARD IN A VERY VERY LONG TIME.

I GUESS THE “DEBATE WAS A MOCKERY TO SHOW BARBADOS PUNCHING ABOVE ITS WEIGHT”.

  40. Cbc ushered an apology for any inconvenience caused by candidates who might have cross the lines and broken tge debate rules

CBC makes statement on comments from debate
    cbcbarbados
    30 October 2020
The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation takes this opportunity to apologize for any untruthful, offensive and misguided comments that may have been broadcast during last night’s live St George North debate that was held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

The Corporation recognized that in the course of a by-election, a national political event, that commentary may not always conform to good taste and took precautions to avoid the besmirching of peoples’ reputation.

Prior to the start of the debate, the candidates were advised by the moderator that they should not make statements that could be viewed as derogatory or injurious to any individuals’ character. This was reinforced by the Corporation’s legal advisor and senior management during the break to deprecate the earlier statements that may have escaped the protocols put in place to prevent them from being aired.

Our legal advisor and CBC management warned one of the candidates specifically about making offensive remarks and insisted that there be no more comments or statements that could be deemed objectionable.

If our efforts failed to contain all such offensive statements, we sincerely regret this as the views expressed do not in any way reflect the opinion of the Corporation

  42. Yeah…the house slaves at CBC are apologizing, not even worth reading, they are being LAUGHED AT on FB…dirty enablers…

  43. It is very good to hear thst CBC has apologise for allowing the loose canon Mr Mitchell to call persons name in a derogatory manner.I was shocked to hear his responses at times. It is one thing to be on BU snonymous spouting wild statements it is another to be on national tv doing so.I would hope he has evidence to support what he said or he could be facing a lawsuit. This should be a wake up call to you David BU for allowing your blog to be used by the other crazy looney Waru to make a lot of wild, crazy allegations which often she cannot prove with any evidence. She too like Mr Mitchell is a loose canon.

  44. Fowl Slave, go take take a bath, ya washed in slave fowlness…idiot..

ya are not even worth locking up..

  45. Do you remember the arrogant ones in Guyana…did ya hear what’s happening to them now, ask Mia.

  46. @ Lorenzo October 30, 2020 6:10 PM

Would you also describe the Auditor General as a “loose cannon”?

After all, the AG reports clearly confirm what Alex the “Loose Cannon” Mitchell is exposing on your national TV!

  47. They are all too low class and arrogant, and in the yardfowls case, arrogant….just like one obese swine and another idiot on FB talking about another heroes square to put the racist nelson statue and one half of the idiot giving a long laundry list that the citizens must agree with, so someone asked, whose expense will all that be at, fool replies, oh, well who is paying to remove the statue now, which was met with, so who the hell commissioned it 200 years ago, they better get a gofundme page, these minority parasites on the island believe they are not only entitled but untouchable…..only the likes of shite slave lorenza would be fearful of them…

  48. and in the yardfowls case, IGNORANT…
