Monday Sermon – Counting The Cost

Sometimes Jesus taught His disciples, by contrasting His commandments with those taught by Moses.  Hear Jesus.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  (Matthew 5:27-28)

Jesus set the standard of adultery for his followers as purposeful lust.  He then continued.

“If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”  (Matthew 5:29-30)

This information can help us to count the cost of following Jesus.  Are we ready to surrender all and follow?  Hear Jesus on counting the cost.

For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’?  Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?  Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.  So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”  (Luke 14:28-33)

Letting go of your way, and pursuing God’s way, is a very wise decision.

    After the introduction in this “sermon” about contrasting His commandments with those taught by Moses we have a statement about adultery, then one about surrendering and counting the cost. Then a statement about letting go of your way, and pursuing God’s way.

    This “sermon” is very disjointed. There is no explanation no connection of anything

    This seems to be the hallmark of SOLUTIONS BARBADOS, AND IT IS PROMOTED AND DEFENDED EVERY WEEK ON BU . IS THIS BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING BETTER TO OFFER IN BARBADOS?

    John 6 Jesus corrected the view of the Jews about the origin of manna said to be given by Moses , and compared it with himself as THE TRUE BREAD THAT CAME FROM HEAVEN

    John 8 Jesus corrected the view of the Jews about their interpretation about the law about adultery by skillfully throwing out the spurious case brought to him and then declaring that HE WAS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

    John 9 Jesus corrected the view of the Jews that congenital illnesses was a result of the parents sin

    john 5 Jesus corrected the view of the Jews about the sabbath and gave his qualifications demonstrating that he was indeed GOD

    A IT WAS BECAUSE The Word of God from the Old Testament was not being taught to the people as it had been written and handed down by God.

    YOU SHOULD STATE THIS MR NON SOLUTIONS AND THEN GIVE SUITABLE EXAMPLES. THAT IS HOW REAL SOLID SANE SOUND SCHOLARS OF THE SCRIPTURE DO IT… even those in their second childhood

    A very interesting Dialectic. Some lessons to be learnt on Homilectics and Hermeneutics, if this is your wont.
    It should teach the BU Household something about being more rigorous with our submissions. Very often they stray from the central issue being discussed or introduce information that does not connect with the stated purpose of the article.

    here is another example

    in john chapter 7 Jesus pointed out how ridiculous it was for the Jews to twist the law around to allow circumcision on the Sabbath but not healing. Basically they were claiming that Jewish interpretation allowed circumcising on the Sabbath, in spite of the law against work, because it perfected the child. But at the same time they were claiming that the law did not allow healing on the Sabbath which in effect did basically the same thing. Jesus showed both love and mercy on the Sabbath by performing work that healed a suffering paralytic. Jesus told them that they did not understand the spirit of the law and why it was given.

    Knowing that we tend to want to justify our harmful desires, Jesus explained the harmful consequences of starting down that road.

    It is typical to find those who have rejected Jesus’ commandments to justify their lusts as normal. They then encourage others that they need not be resisted – because misery loves company. They typically use Solomon and David as examples, but blinded to the knowledge that they are examples of what not to do in this regard.

    Resisting harmful tendencies and encouraging beneficial ones are part of growing up. Keep growing.

    Which is the interesting dialectic? The continuous over-wrought analysis of Phillips’ by this theological expert or the fact he demands that HIS interpretations of the Bible and detailed knowledge MUST take precedence?

    What deep “lessons to be learnt on Homilectics and Hermeneutics” can we truly glean ftom this interrogation of Phillips’ interpretations of the Bible that are not appreciated or understood by ANY reasonable review of any “sermon” or Biblical review?

    Those are more rhetorical questions really as I agree with @Redguard’s view on the riposte to the article.

    We must always herald expertise whatever its source but when the expert offers his data with clear disdain for the opinions of others then what we also learn is the possible envy or other animus… it is absolutely unnecessary to accompany such disdain with the offered expertise!

    One more query which is not rhetorical … any essay or article “that strays from the central issue being discussed or introduce information that does not connect with the stated purpose of the article” is badly written.

    Are you describing this piece as such? What is it’s central issue and where has it strayed from it?

    …and all this as YOU alluded to being rigorous with submissions… so I take you at your word! 🙃🤔

    Oh, the holidays really have nothing directly to do with ANYTHING that came after other than the fact that many people would interpret the life and times of those great men and scathingly dismiss them as not deserving the honour… in sum, there will always be strong and even well intentioned dissent but often it just becomes OBNOXIOUS NOISE!

    Does he consider his level of behaviour as Godly?… Does he see Christ-like attributes in the way he speaks?     It would be wise if he could take a good look at himself, as he may occupy a seat in the church or a place at the Podium but his heart is FAR from his Conscience. Hopefully for his own sake he will repent and not find himself saying on the Judgement Day “Lord Lord have I not done wonderful things in thy name” and in return He hears, “Depart from me I never Knew you”. What do you think would cause of such a thing?

    Hundreds of people in the central and eastern parishes of Barbados will be without water after low reservoir levels forced the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) to shut down two reservoirs.
    The BWA says they were forced to stop pumping at the Bowmanston and Golden Ridge Pumping Stations and this may result in low levels and water outages to customers in districts across St John, St George, St Joseph, St Andrew and St Thomas.

    Terribly disjointed and sometimes they seek to join parts that should not be joined. Clearly he should not be attempting this task.

    I do not take the Bible as literally or as seriously as you do but your methods are sound and the fact that you have diligently studied is obvious.

    I was once asked to do a segment on a radio station because I have that radio personality but I declined because I thought i was not sufficiently steeped in the subject matter.

    A good leader should be aware of his/her strengths and weaknesses and surround himself /herself with persons to make up for what he/she lacks. How is Grenville to do this if he does not know what he lacks?

    These displays of oblivious inadequacy are very embarrassing to those who know better.

    I had a landlord once who said that the only time he knew I was at home was when the West Indies was playing cricket. I YELLED AT THE TELEVISION IN FRUSTRATION.

    What irked me most was THE BAD CRICKET. I seldom watch them now because it is so annoying.     Dear Readers:

    Jesus’ teachings were simple. He tended to define the issue on which He was teaching, so that we would not need to.

    Jesus defined adultery for His audience – which includes us. We can eith accept His definition, of we can go through a complex theological exercise, that may change Jesus’ explicit definition. Jesus asked His followers to teach others what He had taught them – which is what I try to do here.

    We Barbadians are an educated people. We come from a tradition of ‘educated-people-use-big-words’. We may recall the ‘speechifiers’, who used to hold competitions among themselves – to impress us.

    There is another tradition – an almost opposite. It is that the more educated you are, the more simply you should explain complex things. When persons of both traditions interact, there is normally conflict. It may not be envious based, but rather, a desire to protect their traditions. An example follows.

    I follow the Messiah Jesus, who was also an expert teacher – of the ‘simple’ tradition. When we make His teachings complex, we can convey the message that He was a bad teacher, and needs our help to polish his message. We can also convey the message that the audience is too stupid to understand Jesus’ simple message, so they need our help to simplify it.

    By simply stating this position, I will automatically come into conflict with someone of the other tradition. Can both traditions co-exist without conflict? Certainly, once there is willingness.

    Perhaps a complex dissection of the message should be reserved for similarly educations persons, while the simple whole message can be given to the public. This was Jesus’ method, who impressed the teachers when they were his only audience when He was 12, but taught the general public a simple message. Shalom.

    RE Jesus’ teachings were simple
    TO HIS AUDIENCE YES. BECAUSE HE JESUS SPOKE TO HIS AUDIENCES AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF THE OLD TESTAMENT WHICH THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO KNOW, AND EVEN THEN HE HAD TO EXPLAIN IT TO THEM .

    RE He tended to define the issue on which He was teaching, so that we would not need to.
    PLEASE KINDLY GIVE EXAMPLES WITH THE REFERENCES

    RE Jesus defined adultery for His audience – which includes us. We can eith accept His definition, of we can go through a complex theological exercise, that may change Jesus’ explicit definition.

    IF YOU WANT TO TEACH ON ADULTERY REFER TO THE SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE THEREON AND EXPLAIN THEM SIMPLY

    I HAVE NEVER READ ANYTHING BY SANE SOUND SERIOUS SCHOLARS AND STUDENTS OF SCRIPTURE WHERE THEY CHANGE ANYTHING JESUS SAYS
    RATHER REAL BIBLE TEACHERS CLARIFY WHAT JESUS SAID BY COLLECTING THE REFERENCES THAT RELATE TO HIS TEACHING AS JESUS DID NOT TEACH IN A VACUUM

    RE Jesus asked His followers to teach others what He had taught them – which is what I try to do here.
    THE OPERATIVE WORD HERE IS “TRY” BECAUSE YOU FAIL MISERABLY AS A BIBLE TEACHER

    RE I follow the Messiah Jesus, who was also an expert teacher – of the ‘simple’ tradition.
    YOU DON’T SEEM TO BE FOLLOWING CLOSELY, AND YOU ARE NOT SIMPLE— YOU ARE JUST STUPID. YOU ARE NOT TEACHING BIBLE YOU THROW OUT SOME UNRELATED VERSES AND CALL THAT TEACHING

    RE When we make His teachings complex, we can convey the message that He was a bad teacher, and needs our help to polish his message..

    NO YOU MAKE HIS TEACHINGS COMPLEX BY YOUR IGNORANCE OF THE WORD AND BY JUST THROWING OUT VERSES IN A WILLY NILLY, SLAP DASH, HODGE PODEGE WAY

    RE By simply stating this position, I will automatically come into conflict with someone of the other tradition.

    NO YOU COME INTO CONFLICT BECAUSE YOU ARE A VERY POOR BIBLE TEACHER WHO HAVE OBVIOUSLY NOT STUDIED THE WORD OF GOD OR UNDERSTOOD IT

    RE We can also convey the message that the audience is too stupid to understand Jesus’ simple message, so they need our help to simplify it

    VERY UNEDUCATED FOLK LISTEN TO GOOD TEACHING OF THE BIBLE AND UNDERSTAND

    BUT YOU ARE TOO STUPID AND TOO PROUD TO LEARN

    IN EVERY SUBJECT ON EARTH THERE IS A NEED FOR TEACHERS WHO HAVE STUDIED TO SIMPLIFY THE MATERIAL

    RE Can both traditions co-exist without conflict? Certainly, once there is willingness.
    NO SANE SOUND SERIOUS SCHOLARS AND STUDENTS OF SCRIPTURE DON’T COMPROMISE WITH BIBLE ILLITERATES WHO ARE SO STUPID THAT THEY DON’T KNOW THAT THEY DON’T KNOW, AND SO DISHONEST TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE NOT STUDIED EVEN THE VERY BASIC TRUTHS

    RE Perhaps a complex dissection of the message should be reserved for similarly educations persons, while the simple whole message can be given to the public.
    RUBBISH . ORDINARY CHURCH MEMBERS ARE EDUCATED ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND GOOD BIBLE TEACHING

    RE This was Jesus’ method, who impressed the teachers when they were his only audience when He was 12, but taught the general public a simple message.

    NO DUMMY READ THE TEXT PROPERLY AND STOP TALKING RUBBISH

    YOU CANT IMPRESS EITHER THE GENERAL PUBLIC OR THE TEACHERS

    STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW

    IF YOU WANT TO TEACH BIBLE TRY TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THE TEXT

    AND DONT CALL REAL BIBLE SCHOLARS APOSTATES AND FALSE TEACHERS
