The former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Leader of Government Maxine McClean and Leader of government business in the last administration made a very interesting contribution to the radio talk show Brasstacks on the 8 August 2019. Her contribution severely criticized government’s decision to write-off penalties, interest owed on VAT in the 1996 to 2000 period and a waiver of taxes from 2001 to 2017.

It was unfortunate the moderator of the program appeared ignorant about the subject matter and preferred to pressure McClean to finish her contribution which was valuable if compared to many who use the program to discuss issues boring to most listeners.

Here is the link that captures McClean’s contribution.

  1. @enuff

We are not sheep. We want her questions answered. If McClean is hot air is irrelevant.

  2. On another note one of having to do with govt not implementing growth
Is 2020 design to create growth
Or is 2020 a gimmick merely used by this govt as a smoke screen which can fool the people that govt is fast at work creating a growth path for the economy

  3. I heard Joanne the moderator singing the oraises of 2020 talking as if it was an orginal idea original as slice bread
This gimmick would not bring in the necessary financial support for this failing economy
Thus country needs a growth plan than can create thousands of jobs for people who now rely on social programs and in turn easing the huge financial pressure of assistance off govt hands

  4. Mariposa and John A where was the growth plan for the last 10 years with the most in my view incompetent government in Barbados .How many growth strategy they had about eight? Therefore in 18 months you jackasses expect to see significant growth after being placed in such a deep hole?Give us the alternatives or take a seat bellyachers.

  5. @ Lorenzo

First I ain’t in the yardfowl choir so let me help you out. I voted the last ones out and these in because they told me ” we are too overtaxed”. They told me ” you can’t tax your way to growth”. ” a country must have a strategic growth plan” and not let’s forget ” give me it and let me show you. ”

You might have been in Bora Bora at the time but do you not remember any of these statements? Unlike many I don’t care about party just delivery and performance.

Need I say more as I really don’t see the point.

  6. Lorenzo compare to what govt has not offered the dlp had more
Lets start with a renewable energy program as of yet this govt has not laid not one realistic policy to create growth
Btw i hear that the in the Dover area it stinks once again
You ought to quickly get hold of Abrahams and tell him the sewage is once again backing up in the streets

Let us drill down into the popular thesis broadcast ad nauseum that the last government stole the treasury and destroyed the country.

In the ten years the former government was in office there was more disposable income, bus fares were lower, gasoline was lower ,the whole spectrum of cost of living was lower, unemployment was in single digits, the government never defaulted on its debts, the economy grew albeit by small degree in 2017 and other times in the last ten years, crime specifically murder and shootings were low, people felt safe to go out at night the list goes on.

How then with the cross section of living conditions shown to be better in the last ten years deteriorating observably and abruptly from May 2018 with a huge spike in cost of living, no growth in the economy, higher unemployment, less disposable income, government defaulting on its debts spending unprecedented multi millions on consultants, a shocking major increase in murders and shootings and fear in the community etc can a case be made that the last administration destroyed Barbados?

The period between May 2018 and the present have been the most depressing and darkest times in the modern history of Barbados we have seen nothing like it before.

Its as if the most ominous dark cloud engulfed the island refusing to budge of course we hope those dark clouds do eventually lift in the meantime day to day living is at its most desperate since Independence.

Yes Mottley communicates with the media in ways Stuart wasn’t inclined to do and mixes with the people in ways Stuart did not but the reality is that the promised transparency and accountability of government hasn’t taken place.

No growth, no new investment nothing significant to turn our economic fortunes around has occurred. We are further in the red than under the last administration. We hear of the billons the last government stole where that sort of loot was lying around in an economy stretched to the limit to pay its bills is yet to be explained. Not to mention the vice grip of the ubiquitous smart stream.

With the current government having a monopoly no move has been made to prosecute the last government ministers routinely accused of corruption and theft.

Yes the USA arrested and charged Inniss and if he is found guilty he will find no sympathy from Bees or Dees or wider community but we have heard of acts of infelicity in both camps over the years. When Arthur retook leadership of BLP he accused Mottley of bad things.

People on social media accuse current prominent ministers of bad things indeed current government ministers accuse each other of some of the worst infelicities imaginable a court case as far as we know is pending on some of those serious charges.

Bobby Morris said it took a miracle to keep the country afloat in the last ten years can we honestly dismiss his claim because his party lost the last election. Neutrals have opined there is more than a grain of truth in his forthright claim.

So they put me to ask if the 747 will return to complete its mission. Don’t ask me what that is, am asking you. Lol

  10. You forgot to mention a couple things.

To use your words there were ad nauseum credit rating downgrades which affected your ability to access the capital markets at low rates of borrowing.

The foreign reserves declined every year in the last ten years.

The Central Bank was instructed to print money to a volume that the deficit grew and was an albatross around the necks of Bajans.

Barbados as the laughing stock of everyone at homage abroad. The people punished your party with laughter 30-0 for your incompetence. History will soon reveal if your party will be banished to the political stuff bim forever.

Donks Gripe and Josh (aka “waiting”) you are telling more lies than your disgraced buddy Stinkliar.

It’s a pity an overwhelming majority of the Bajan voters didn’t see eye to eye with you and ‘Josh” on the picture of paradise you have painted under the last DLP administration.

Instead of showing thanksgiving what an ungrateful despicable lot of whinging gripers after 10 years of DLP blessings’, right “Donks”?

Remind us again why the last Guv of the CB was fired for being the quisling canary in the imploding mine?

So which one is worst? Arthur, Stuart-cum-Sinckler or Mottley? Stop the ‘griping’ and make up your mind, man, we are ‘waiting”

You would have more credibility on this blog if you were to direct your focus to the White Oak drama.

By barking up the handsomely rewarded white oat tree you might just stumble upon the key which could unlock the Pandora’s box to make Donville’s troubles look like receiving a ticket for speeding on the ABC cart road.

  20. Yes David correct there were ad neauseum down grades
But looking at the alternative where poverty rate has skyrocketed and household bills and employment off the chain in one year the downgrades at least did not imposed such hardship on the lives of barbados
The credit rating which would have made it harder for govt to transact or borrow loans on the open market would have been or seen as a payoff in short term in order to keep barbadian household from reaching the depths of poverty which they are enduring now
    But answer this
The external creditors are mad as hell asking for their money and what did one govt official say in the most arrogant manner that barbados going forward would not need external loans
In other words barbados can owe but u the external creditors can wait till we can pay

Only idiots talk about notions of democracy and free speech rights.

These memes have been demonstrably shown as instrumental only.

Meaning that they have no underlying value.

Let’s suppose that there is a free speech right, would there not be a corresponding obligation to all the rest of us to have those who now make this specious claim to deploy that right in protection of that obligation to the rest of us.

Since McClean showed no obligation to us when she was in a position that such an obligation was required, and had value, only an idiot will now seek to extend rights to such a person.

  23. I would agree with all the last people that should speak on the economy is the DLP. But as a tax payer does she have valid concerns? I think if we put politics and the messenger one side and examine what she is saying, many of her concerns are also ours.

  24. Pachamana
You weird i dont think u know
Somebody ought to call jekins fuh sure you need a straight jacket
The s.hit you just wrote could only come from a mad man brain
How in the hell can u with all good reason and logic concludes because of her role in past govt she has no right to free speech
Well if i take your mad comments literally i can say your reasoning can and should be applied to Mia and her entire cabinet who help run this country into the ground when in power in a 14 year period
The bills now due ! Mia and the ruling govt back then of which she was a minister helped racked up huge debt.

  25. “The credit rating which would have made it harder for govt to transact or borrow loans on the open market would have been or seen as a payoff in short term in order to keep barbadian household from reaching the depths of poverty which they are enduring now….”

Where is the evidence to support your above comment?

Ironically, when the BLP yardies reminded you of the increases in taxes, when “the poverty rate skyrocketed, household bills and employment off the chain” and the depths of poverty Barbadians endured as a result of Sinckler’s “home grown” austerity policies, you DLP yardies asked how could this talk about hardship be true if one took into consideration, the scores of Bajans attending fetes and other events. You also accused those contributors that criticize the former DLP administration as being unpatriotic and “putting self first before country,” while asking them to bring solution instead of criticizing.

Similarly, the BLP yardies could now ask how is this possible, if one took into consideration the scores of Bajans who attended the recently concluded Crop Over events, and all the fetes and other events held during the past year?

However, what I have noticed is a REVERSAL of the roles being played where you are now criticizing without bringing solutions, (which was an abomination previously) and the BLP yardies are now accusing people of your ilk as being unpatriotic and “putting self first before country.”

It’s obvious why Mr. Skinner constantly reminds us “the duopoly rules.”

I have to commend contributors of Mr. Skinner, Mr. Codrington and John A’s caliber, who always bring a refreshing, unbiased and balance perspective on issues.

  26. “I think if we put politics and the messenger one side and examine what she is saying, many of her concerns are also ours.”

……her concerns are false, she had no such concerns of collecting the vat when she was a senator collecting a salary from taxpayers, that is when she should have been most concerned….but she was not.

The government, both “B” and “D” is foolish. This is how you deal with squatters. The first time a shack goes up you remove it. Then you fence the lot. With some nice razor wire on top. You get one of the many security guards on the taxpayers payroll to give a daily pass through to ensure that the squatting does not continue.

To prevent squatting in the first place you offer serviced lots at economic rents to potential squatters. You collect the rents every week. because if you can’t or won’t collect one weeks rent, how do you expect to collect 2 eeks rent, or 20 weeks rent?

That is why I say the government, both parties foolish.

The wait until easy things become hard, then wring their hands, and leave it for the other party to solve, and round and round we go.

Apparently, your brain has been “programed” to “interpret” contributions as being either “pro-BLP” or “anti-DLP.” Or your “POLITICAL BLINDNESS” prevented you from “SEEING” the salient points that are being made.

You CAN’T think OUTSIDE your “political box.” Hence, your generalize statements and political rhetoric.

What you wrote in your contribution did NOT “rubbed me the wrong way,” and you can’t highlight any words, phrases or sentences in my contribution that could be reasonably interpreted as such.

All I did was to EXPOSE the HYPOCRISY of BLP and DLP supporters…….commented on how the roles changed since elections…….. and emphasized the point Mr. Skinner is always making re “the duopoly rules.”
