It was confirmed by Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados that groups representing President Nicolás Maduro and seld declared President Juan Guaidó have been meeting in Barbados to find a resolution to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. The Norway government is reported to be mediating the discussions between the two parties.

Barbados has enjoyed friendly relations with Venezuela that reached a peak in the 70s and 80s under late President Carlos Andrés Pérez. The blogmaster sincerely wishes for a positive outcome to the meeting. The hopes and fears of millions of Venezuelans rest on the outcome.

The decision to host the meeting in Barbados must be viewed as positive if only for the international attention the tiny island will receive. Lord knows all earned media is needed at this time.

An observation one can legitimately make is that since Mia Mottley assumed the job as Prime Minster, she wasted no time breathing life into Brand Barbados on the regional and internation fronts. Barbados’ reputation had taken a heavy hit under former Prime Minster Freundel Stuart whose introverted nature saw him preferring to read a book with a glass of wine on his patio after 5PM until bedtime. His Foreign Minister was a hard worker with a heart in the right place but lacked the gravitas to elevate Barbados on the outside. Her many sojourns overseas reflect she tried her hardest.

There was a period back in the day when Barrow, Burnham, Adams, Manley, Williams and a few others were on a first name basis with leaders from England, Canada, Singapore and others- these relationships were formed at university and made governing tiny islands tolerable. Fast forward to today, those relationships no longer exist. Some may point to Mottley’s play book as the alternative to ferment relationships to leverage for the benefit of Barbados and the region.

We have to end this blog on a tangential note by asking Prime Minister Mottley to address the outstanding issue of the ongoing negotiations with the external creditors led by White Oaks.  We are aware that although the external debt is not large compared to the domestic debt the aggressive 3 year recovery plan will be compromised if it becomes protracted.

  1. Would Tom Adams have entertained Sydney Burnett Alleyne had he declared himself as Prime Minister? … Stuppes.

  2. One would hope the talks succeed. Having said that, it can also be said that one is witnessing a diversionary tactic meant to assuage the populace’s fears that every thing is honky-dory:since Barbados seems to be playing a leading role on the international arena. This is however an illusion. At home the following problems still exist : a public transport system still in chaos; levels of corruption have reached new heights; a dysfunctional judiciary; the NIS according to the IMF; facing serious insolvency problems; a part of the populace has no access to potable water on a sustained basis;;highways in need of repair and one can go on with a host of other problems (settlement of the foreign debt issue needs to be achieved). As I have said before, what we are witnessing here is an actress full of a lot of glib talk signifying nothing.

  3. Given the intercourse on the failure of Barbados as a State on BU how can the word “Paradise” be used to describe it?

    What a joke!!

  6. What ignorance!

Barbados was referred to as ‘paradise’ at the height of chattel slavery.

We said here yesterday, and will say again, that these negotiations are a good-get for Barbados and Mugabe. She should be applauded for embarking on the soft power strategy of the Zone of Peace rhetoric of Sir William Skinner et al/

For nearly a century Barbados was the centre of the first globalization epoch. Now, to deploy infamy in the service of soft power is a great idea.

  7. @Pacha

There is the imagery of what is unfolding in Venezuela compared to Barbados that supports the label Barbados is a Paradise. It isn’t a shithole country for sure.

  8. David

    Well, Venezuela is not either

But it has been made to be, in some ways, by the criminal orangutan in the White House.

David, instead you should see both these Bridgetown negotiations and the financial imperialism imposed of Venezuela as apocryphal in fashioning the alternatives to the post 1945 architecture.

For Venezuela is deploying the Russian international SWIFT alternative mechanism, CIPS. They are also using the Chinese version as well.

With Barbados coming on the scene with these negotiations, given the country steadfast commitment to the non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, adds to alternative dispute resolutions mechanisms not dominated by the idiots in Washington.

It’s amazing that a man who seized power is treated with such reverence. Nobody went to the table to negotiate with the New Jewel Movement and Maurice Bishop. They got with Reagan and Eugenia Charles and crushed the revolution. One remembers Tom Adams a Prime Minister with camera taking pictures of the US bomber planes as they left our airport.
Of course the reactionaries will argue that they invaded after cracks in the leadership appeared but the historical truth is that Caribbean leaders endorsed the invasion of a sister country.
However this meeting will have some residual benefits for our Prime Minister and can be seen as a diplomatic coup. In the real world of geopolitical machinations, we have to be forever aware of all possibilities both negative and positive .

  10. @Pacha

The decision for both sides to sit at the peace table is a positive. The two geopolitical forces is good for detente?

  12. Sir William

At least we can say that on this occasion Uncle Sam has failed to create the internal strife which he did amongst the leadership ranks of the New Jewel Movement.

We’ve heard the Venezuelans referring to Grenada as an inflection point and promising not to repeat.

  13. @William

Point taken. We should at least also concede that a unified Caribbean would be more effective in geopolitical spheres. It was Adams and Charles who supported Reagan. I think Charles even went on prime time USA tv shows.

Or is he just another bully in the political playground unable to handle North Korea, Iran or even Venezuela with Russian troops on the ground?

What is your main man waiting on to make his mark as the greatest war president after Harry S Truman where the buck of the atomic bomb really stopped?

Is he awaiting the arrival of another blithering idiot to turn into the antichrist of a buffoon behind the black door at No.10?

Well, one cannot compare the ignorant boy Guido to Maurice Bishop.

For Maurice Bishop led the successful overthrow of an established and repressive government and under international law then himself constituted the recognized authority in Grenada, by the UN, others.

This idiot Guido has no control or legal authority whatsoever anywhere in Venezuela. The only thing he has is the criminal support of the orangutan in the White House.

So Barbados’ involvement is peace talks is a rightness.

  18. PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT COMMUNISM/SOCIALISM WILL RIP ON TRUMP AND SUPPORT THOSE OF MADURO’S ILK!

SOCIALISM IS THE ROAD THAT LEADS TO COMMUNISM!
“THE GOAL OF SOCIALISM IS COMMUNISM”…Vladimir lenin

Socialism… The government telling you what to do and how much you can have!!

Then they go after the other products of your efforts (your property). Then they go after your efforts (your labour) and tell you what to do. Then they tell you what to think. If you don’t act like you are thinking along their liking, it may be off to the indoctrination farm (Chinese and Korean “education” camps). This is the progression from Socialism Eventually leading to Communism; it can happen anywhere where socialistic, collectivist principles are consistently applied.

Socialism leads to Communism That is Tyranny. This is the Globalist plan: Agenda 21; Socialism/Communism to control the people.

  19. GP what is Intentionally Misrepresented here is the Vision of Trump that appeals to the Ordinary person, he is not a Fake Nor is he a Socialist!

A Free Market Economy with some regulation combined with a Constitutional Representative Republic government is the best combination of government and economics humanity has. If you want to make it better from that point forward then you have to improve the hearts and minds of people to be moral, wise, charitable, and just. There’s no way Socialism with the state owning most of the economy and having alleged crimes and the KGB going to get you to a better world.

In the beginning, Socialism can rely on the productivity of a non-socialist population. When that generation dies off, socialism starts to be practiced by socialists and achieves its more significant goals. It is at that point that socialism sets records for human suffering. When there is no more money left to confiscate, then the Death Squads come out, and GENOCIDE
BEGINS… just the way it Works!

More insidious is that they can’t allow you to speak against the government or have the right to defend yourself and change things by force if necessary. Totalitarianism in all its forms seeks to perpetuate itself. In America, it would mean the end to the Bill of Rights.

CAPITALISM LEADS TO PROSPERITY. PROSPERITY LEADS TO FREEDOM. FREEDOM LEADS TO PROVIDENCE. THIS CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED THROUGH HARD WORK.

A SOCIALIST IS A COMMUNIST WITH PATIENCE!

  21. Dems know if they can keep half the people dependent on them, the Dems can stay in power. A vicious cycle…the Dems keep you in poverty and you keep them in power. President Trump has opened up enough jobs to get people out of poverty. For this, we should thank our Lord.

Democrat/Socialist way is to SEDUCE the more part of the people by their words until they come to believe in their works and partake of their spoils, (Free Stuff) that then join with them in their Nefariousness. That is how they did OBTAIN THE SOLE MANAGEMENT OF THE GOVERNMENT, they do not care about the poor they will trample them under their feet just like MADuro and smite and rend and turn their backs upon on them.

The “new” ideas coming from the Left are anything but. Marxism is Marxism, and it breeds Laziness, Entitlement, and Envy. NO THANK YOU.

Which is better: Socialism or Capitalism? Does one make people kinder and more caring, while the other makes people Greedy and More Selfish? In this video, Dennis Prager explains the Moral Differences between Socialism and Capitalism, and why anyone who wants a kind and generous society must support one and oppose the other.

  22. Not really Pacha.

Being the venue for a conference has nothing to do with power – soft or otherwise.

Some high level UN conferences have been hosted in Bim before. Did that mean that Bim was elevated to the big boy table.

Its good that we are the venue for the Venezuela conference but that is just it. To pretend that we are suddenly calling shots on the world stage is laughable.

  23. The image of Barbados has already been tarnished by corruption and gun violence
Hosting a “peace party” on the island would not save barbados out of its economic problems
All that is happening with this “peace talk ” is just an arrangement of chairs known as musical chairs
The head chief and bottle washer couldn’t care less where the talks are held as long as he remains dictator of Venezuela
Most of interest would be whose side Barbados govt favours
With barbados tied down to debt the long and short to this issue would be that of knowningvhow barbados plays its cards right not to offend USA and Maduro.

  24. Not to mention the last ten years.

  25. Dullard

As you would know, we have more than a modicum of respect for your views.

Sir William Skinner has rightly argued that the Caribbean should be a Zone of Peace.

In valuing peace, as we value other social systems, it would be a necessary precondition to build the regional institutions, networks, etc where the projection of peace helps us to prevent those who would want our region to be somehow embroiled in war, of any kind.

If this reasoning meets the threshold of logic, then would the infrastructure for peace not add value to our notion as to what our country should represents.

And if these infrastructures for peace can deliver results and show the world the benefits of having new centres aimed at avoiding war not elevate Barbados, the Caribbean, to a better place?

  26. @ Mariposa

Only a brain dead buffoon would believe that the decline of Barbados happened over the last ten years.

  27. That Barbados was chosen to host the third round of Venezuelan Peace Talks is a plus for Barbados especially after the cloud of dark government of the DLP ’08-18,and a feather in the cap of PM Mia Mottley.Sandy wrote and delivered an Ode in Brazil where Millie went years ago.Stuart swore he would dismiss the CCJ if elected. That was the extent of his foreign policy.
I agree with David 100% that Mia needs to get this White Oak folly and settle our foreign payables failing which we are doing nothing to enhance our bruised image to the satisfaction of a compliant market waiting with baited breath.

  28. For those who are writing of Maurice Bishop, this man had the support of many Caribbean politicians including EWB as well as many U.K. based Caribbean folk.Like Walter Rodney, his was an engaging personality,a deep thinker, spoke softly and with finesse. He had more political support in Grenada than Sandy or Staurt had in Barbados.

  29. According to MSN.com the talks broke down yesterday.

    @Pachamama July 11, 2019 7:08 AM

“For Venezuela is deploying the Russian international SWIFT alternative mechanism, CIPS. They are also using the Chinese version as well.”

I have repeatedly state that one shouldn’t allow one’s dislike of a person or country to cloud one’s judgement. The siting of anti-missile systems in this case is irrelevant. Venezuela is surrounded by countries that are for the most part not very friendly to it. There are logistical and supply line issues to be considered. Obviously there are US and British special forces on the ground, who by now would have targets pin-pointed ( Type of armaments and so on). It is not difficult to neutralized the surface -air missiles. Just like the onset of a bacterial infection, there are so many colony forming units (CFU)present, that the body defenses cannot cope with them, as a result the person becomes ill. Similarly, swamping the missile batteries with ant-missile rockets renders them inoperative. There is also old fashion sabotage. If you feel that that the Americans would allow China or Russia to resupply materiel, you would have to be living in a world of make believe. The imposition of a hostile zone and a sea and air quarantine would put paid to any effort to resupply Venezuela. America spends over $650 billion dollars per annum on defense( more than all the other countries combined); all the other countries are trying to steal their technology. After spending that amount of money, if you think the Americans don’t have a counter (the Americans do not talk a lot of their capability) you are living in a wonderland

You, Gabriel, are a very wizardly sagacious “Up and On” fellow and long in the tooth in being able to spot political chicanery from a distance.

We are sure you can see that there is more in the foreign debt mortar than just the White Oaks pestle.

There must be some kind of rat hiding somewhere nibbling at the money cheese and like the medici sitting at a poker pool under a Bajan tamarind tree is taking his cut of the White Oaks fees.

If you want to see the ‘hiding’ rat just remove the broken-down palisades concealing the Four Seasons disaster.

You can bet your last foreign dollar that if some viable foreign debt restructuring arrangement is not put in place by August the IMF would be putting pressure on Barbados to seriously reconsider the country’s longstanding monetary romance and relationship with the Greenback.

  31. David July 11, 2019 12:59 PM

Not to mention the last ten years.

That line has been worn out and tossed out to sea
Now lets hear how barbados going to pay its foreign debt

This gloriuos distraction of Barbados hosting a ” peace talk” means absolutely nothing to barbadians having to tread heavy waters to make ends meet
Now lets hear talks on Mia having measures that would save barbados image from ending up in debtors court
Lets hear talks on what economic measures barbados have to create growth that would place retrenched workers in jobs taking them off thw bread line
Lets hear talks on cutting taxes for hard working barbadians
Let’s hear talks on initiatives which would benefit the male youth taking them out of the hands of drug dealers and setting a path for them to becoming productive citizens
The last ten years are gone
Mia promised changed for the better
Let all the above sink in your big head

What is going on with the Caribbean that their leaders have become so friendly with Communist Dictatorships? It may be desirable to be amicable to all but to Side with an Alien Ideology that has caused the demise of Millions worldwide instead of the Plight of the Venezuelan People, Boggles the mind.

That is the essence of what Dictatorship is about and to Control the Populace. Dictatorships allow No Dissidence whereby a Free Society allows for Debate and the Exchange of Ideas! Once you begin to understand the Difference between Tyranny and Freedom you will see that Freedom is Hard to maintain/educate the people all the time as to what Freedom is. Tyranny is the easiest form of Government because all it takes is for one individual that believes in Tyranny to get into Power and a Nation would be destroyed. Has Guyana recovered since Burnham has Jamaica recovered since Manley how long do you think it would be for Venezuela even if they get rid of Maduro tomorrow. “Most of what was said about Americas capabilty to defeat Osama ben laden was proven wrong”

The US was bound to run into trouble. You start a war talking a lot of crap about not offending Muslims’ sensibilities by not bombing on the Islamic Sabbath on Fridays. You fight a war to win by any means. You ignore the press and allow the generals to get on with the fighting. Just outline what is wanted and allow the generals to act. You don’t put an artillery general in command of troops fighting basically a guerrilla war, especially when the general is very cautious like general Franks was. It would have taken Nazi German generals to handle the situation. You think the Chinese are going to listen to the UN about what they are doing to the Muslims ?

  41. @Dr.Lucas

  42. @ David

Sure. Did the Chinese follow the Geneva Convention in the Korean war ? did the Vietnamese practice the Geneva Convention during the Vietnam war? The Geneva Convention is a Western Construct. The Asians do not view things the same way as westerners do. China is a world power and many things the west took for granted over the last five-hundred years will have to be reviewed.

That repatriation will happen after Muslims have built a new Mecca in old “England’s green and pleasant land” the same way the Western European Christians built New York(minster) on the stolen lands of the Iroquois and Mohawks.

The Muslims have the god of human reproduction on their side whereas Shaytan has the Westernized youth under his spell of synthetic drug addiction.

Why don’t you call on the same westerners to stop being ‘business friends’ with the same Muslims countries practicing Sharia law and exporting arms and luxury trinkets to greedy rich Muslims totally against the teachings of Muhammad as inspired by the One and only Allah?

Can’t you see there only one god worshiped by greedy rich people and leaders; whether Jew or gentile, Christian or Muslim, westerner or easterner, black, white, brown or yellow? That god is called the Power of Money.

  44. @Dr. Lucas

What are you saying. Because there is a history of violation it should continue? In the name of what? What is wrong?

  45. @ Robert Lucas

Muhammad the Imam has said it. An intention to spread Jihadism in liberal democracies and the use of human reproduction – breeding – to populate the world. That is why they should be limited to two children at most. Any more should be taken in to care and sent for adoption. Watch China and Burma.

  46. Robert Lucas

We have responded to your earlier comments but unfortunately it was lost, maybe later again.

    Separately

Why do you persist with this anti-Muslim diatribe?

  47. @Muhammed
Do you really think the western world is going to wait until Muslims out number them in their own homes before they do something about it? There is a drift to the right in all western countries, the day of liberalism is numbered: the multicultural crap peddled by the left is going to be overthrown. Note the laws being put into place all over Europe. There is going to be a civil war and Muslims will be expelled from the west it is only a matter of time. You keep on talking about the west trading with Muslims; mainly oil and arms with green energy and new extraction methods the need to trade is diminishing. The UN has been keeping noise about the Chinese treatment of Muslims, have you heard any great noise being kept over the matter?with the Burmese, there is a lot of talk but little action on the treatment meted out to Muslims . The rest of the world really don’t care too much about what happens to Muslims. Do you really think non-Muslims want Muslims to settle in their countries? This why there is a drift to the right. At first there was a lot of noise about Hungary’s erecting fences. All of the countries have some type of barrier to keep out Muslims. The day is coming when the border forces will use lethal force, it is only a matter of time 9( it has already happened in one of those eastern European countries).

  48. @ David
When their interests are affected. the major powers aren’t interested in right or wrong. How did you think the west reached its position? The west certainly didn’t turn the other cheek.
