The United States celebrates Black History Month annually. Let the world celebrate the history of all black women as well. Daughters of Africa (published in 1994) and the new volume New Daughters of Africa: An International Anthology of 20th and 21st Century Writing by Women of African Descent (published 2019) by editor Margaret Busby is an anthology about African women writers. Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom (2018) by Keisha N. Blain highlights black women leaders who demanded equal recognition and participation in global civil society.

Let us teach our black daughters and our white daughters about civil rights and activists for freedom. Let us care about black womanhood. Could the civil rights movement have happened without black women? No, indeed. Let It Shine, Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters (HMH Books for Young Readers, 2013) authored by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Stephen Alcorn is recommended.

Bold. Gutsy. Plucky. Scrappy. Determined. Spirited. Sojourner Truth, Biddy Mason, Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bathune, Ella Josephine Baker, Dorothy Irene Height, Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Shirley Chisholm are featured.

Born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in 1797, Sojourner Truth was an Afro-American womenโ€™s rights activist. Her famous โ€œAinโ€™t I a Womanโ€ speech was delivered in 1851 at the Ohio Womenโ€™s Rights Convention. โ€œโ€ฆAnd ain’t I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain’t I a woman?โ€

โ€œNobodyโ€™s free until everybody is free.โ€ Fannie Lou Hamer dedicated her life to fighting racial injustice. In 1964 she co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and ran for Congress in Mississippi in 1965.

The first African-American woman elected to Congress, Shirley Chisholm of New York, won election to the House in 1968.

More Brave Black Women

Of the 127 women serving in the United States 116th Congress, 22ย are Black.ย In 1993, Carol Moseley Braun became the first African American female to serve as U.S. senator. Gloria Jean Watkins, known by her pen name bell hooks, is the author of Feminism is for Everybody. The bell hooks Institute in Berea, KY, celebrates, honors, and documents the life and work of this acclaimed intellectual, feminist theorist, cultural critic,ย artist, and writer. www.bellhooksinstitute.com. Known as the โ€œMother of the American Civil Rights Movement,โ€ Septima Poinsette Clark was an activist, teacher, and advocate for education. www.biography.com/.

โ€œIn the 20th century, African American women formed the backbone of the modern Civil Rights Movement. They were the critical mass, the grassroots leaders challenging America to embrace justice and equality for all,โ€ according to The National Womenโ€™s History Museum. www.womenshistory.org/.

There were countless unnamed black women who struggled for freedom and justice. Let us remember them as well. NASAโ€™s employees Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan were black scientists featured in the film Hidden Figures. Astronaut Mae Jemison became the first African-American woman in space in 1992. Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Condoleezza Rice, Joycelyn Elders, M.D., Maya Angelou and other black women stand as female icons for civil rights and equality.

The Civil Rights Movement was triumphant in 1964 and 1965, with the federal governmentโ€™s passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

White women, let the named and unnamed black women of struggle, freedom, and equality nationally and internationally be nestled in our spirits and let their struggles be on our lips.

โ€œThere are still many causes worth sacrificing for, so much history yet to be made.โ€”Michelle Obama

After all of that, black people in Barbados and the Caribbean are still pretending to be slaves, this time the horribly mentally emnslaved, thanks to their useless leaders who learned absolutely nothing from the slave experiences of their own ancestors….a total disgrace and disrespect to their memories.

    How do they justify that.

  2. Definitely HOGGING THE BLOG with the samey, samey contributions to EVERY post, EVERY day.

No matter what is the topic, even if it is about ice cream, fishing, or Good, it is always the SAME 200 responses to EVERY topic…. slaves in parliament, thieving lawyers, minority thieves, useless leaders and mentally enslaved; Bizzy, COW, Bjerkham, Peter Harris.

  3. Why, in the US black history month, do you need a white woman on a black blog to tell us about brave black women? Can’t our chairman see the contradiction? Are we so mentally backward that we think this is acceptable? Next she would be a professor of black studies. What will future generations say?

  4. Hal .Good question
It seems that White people would grab hold of any opportunty where black upliftment is regarded as a tool towards self empowerment in order for Whites to curry favour with the rest of the world
Whites seem unable to allow blacks to have their own piece of recogization all by themselves without whites constantly interrupting and seizing upon blacks every move
Every dam thing that blacks have acessed or used to englightend themselves in way towards progress white people have lay way to rip out of the hands of black people.
These people seem bound and determined to have blacks sitting in the back of the bus

  5. Do you know that some White people were activists against Apartheid in South Africa? The blogmaster will always process the message first even if it means suppressing the urge to think the way you two do. Continue to see the world through narrow and bigoted eyes and we will never experience change.

,..,…enslavement without shackles and chains that is about to be elevated to the next level, of course which i do not expect you to see in your ignorant mode..

….ya want things sugarcoated and tied up in pretty ribbons with nuff, nuff lies, ya on the wrong blog, ya cant even get that on facebook.

Ah told yall stupid people already that i am not here to post what you want to hear in ya mindlessness and lack of creative thought.

  7. @ Mariposa,

It is David’s mind set, which s really sad in 2019. So, in this silly reasoning, apartheid collapsed because of white activism. I do not mind his silliness, it is his abuse of his position as chairman of the board that niggles me. But he is a product of a culture that is based on learning by rote.

  8. After many years of keeping black people in chains
Today White people would grab hold of any and every opportunity where black causes are involved to make themselves look better and in the process gain monetary
This is the new weapon of choice used by whites to regain power and physchological strength over blacks a way of keeping blacks confused and separated amongst their own
As long as Whites show up to every black show to support black causes
Blacks would be forced to keep mouth shut on past wrongs whites have done which blacks to continue the fight of self hate and division and seeing whites as Saviours of their causes and not conspirators of the wrongs whites have done to them over the years

  11. @ Mariposa,

This is David’s warped mind set, which is not surprising. He is now suggesting that apartheid collapsed because of white activism. It is the result of a culture driven by learning by rote, which I can tolerate. It is the chairman’s abuse of his position which niggles me.

Until the words of Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie and not Bob Marley as many so wrongfully believe rings through in the collective psyche of the Black race … we will be forever chained to the negative aspects of our past … we only speak of unity as a race of people, but in reality we are more and fragmented and divided than any race of people on the Earth…
Haile Selassie words and not Bob Marley …emancipate yourself from mental Slavery…none but ourselves can free but or mind…

  14. There is no other race on the face Earth today that is more self-destructive than the Black race, and we continue to blame our self-destruction on everything else but our own doings… Yes they are forces out there seeking our distruction, and we are playing right into their hands …

You insult the chairman almost every day. He is appallingly ignorant, dumb, learnt by rote and he niggles you ……..yet you are on HIS blog EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Are you guys serious…@Hal, I can excuse the awful ridiculousness of the fawning, mindless nonsense of the DLP toady but your first retort above was shockingly petty and racist.

So what if this Caucasian looking person wrote the piece. Was it not crisp, incisive, detailed and a solid recounting of informative data!

Respectfully bro, but your commentary is as disturbingly racist as that of the the worst purveyors of that behaviour…you are no different to the stewardess who refused to listen to the Black female physician when she jumped into action when a passenger became unresponsive on a flight… When that stupid stewardess said to Dr. Cross “Let me see your credentials. What type of doctor are you? Where do you work? “ and a man is lying unresponsive a few seats away and then several minutes later accepts the word of a white man that he WAS a doctor…that’s stupidly racist.

When you question the bonafides of an obviously accomplished person assisting us in our various states of unresponsiveness on whether she is black enough to offer this help you are being racist!

There are any number of Black authors the Blogmaster could have chosen I suspect but this author gave him the excellent, immediate style care most suited to his needs and timing I will surmise…

…You are not a stupid, racist steward of another man’s health or in this case what is excellent writing and skill are you?!

  19. When are Whites going to do the right thing and fight for the real cause one of reparations for blacks a fight which blacks have had to undergo for many years all by self
A fight which reinforces blacks a right to self empowerment which also pushes them towards economic security and self sufficient
A fight which in itself enables blacks to a respect due by the white establishment
A fight which once and for all will place blacks in the History books as being equal to other races who have fought for what is fair and justified after being wronged

Nelson Mandela, at one point constituted the Youth arm of the ANC African National Congress, and his belief was that all South Africans were to be included in the Movement for the reconstruction of South Africa … Steve Biko on the other hand … brought the ideology of Black Consciousness to the Movement because he believed that too many Whites and Indians were involved inbMovement and that Blacks were the only ones who could truly determined the nature of their freedom.

Unfortunate you feel that everybody in the world owes you something for having done nothingโ€ฆ

Do you want to be Self Reliant or Dependent?

Do you want to Persist in a Victim Mentality and feel that others owe you something which you have not earned?

Or do you want to Rise above Envy and work for your own Self Advancement?

Money does not make a person but in your eyes you equate money with respect. Character is more Valuable than money.

You who Choose to lead people by your rhetoric and have chosen the Lesser rather than the Better.

When you stand before your maker and you are Barren of Character but Full of Greed and Covertciousness, for you surely cannot take your money with you โ€ฆyou will be Poor indeed rather than Rich, you have chosen the Wrong Wealth.

    @ David,

I have called on a number of occasions on BU for black and white Bajans to work together for the sake of the nation. I stand by that. But the philosophy behind the need for a Black History Month is the belief that black people have been written out of history; that our interpretation of events is missing.
To then come on what s seen as a blog focused on the black experience to have a white woman telling us who our heroes/heroines are and what they have done is to reinforce that belief.
Of course, they are white authors whose interpretation of history coincides with the mainstream of black thinking, so what? Their role is to take that message in to the white community, not preach to black people.
@SSS As to some white people being more ‘black’ than black people, that is the nonsense that Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison said about Bill Clinton. Go back and dread what the Clintons had to say about Obama during the first presidential campaign; go back and look at Clinton’s social polices during his presidency, including the three strikes and you are out.
    I won’t dignify @dePedantic with a reply.

BTW if I may change the subject a bit and revert to remarks by the ever politically astute @Mariposa re her claim that POTUS would shut the US govt again….

As evidenced from the sterling results of the last Bajan election her political instincts were superb ๐Ÿ˜‚!

But that apart what amazes me is how one man can so completely take over a storied old party as this man has and so comprehensively seemingly bend it to his will…

Yes we saw this strongman power in the guise of Barrow and Arthur and now with Mottley but it’s more frightening when coupled with this modern ting called social media…. Beware Mia Mottley!

It appears to me to be exceptional political calculus if POTUS evokes emergency power to appropriate already designated money for a freaking non-threating national security matter in order to appease his fanatical supporters and in so doing run the real risk of having it voted DOWN by his own party…. a perfect case of ‘I tried but this old guard thwarted me’….

This level and style of demigoguery is very dangerous….whether in Washington or here in Bridgetown.

Sentimental tosh. This is no argument. There must have been some form of thinking behind the decision to publish an article by a white woman telling us who our brave black women are. We know who they are; they give birth to us, feed us, cloth us, send us to school, protect us.
It is not racism to resist the misappropriation of black female history; in fact, if a black man tried writing that history he too could be called out. If BU is anything, it is the black voice – divergent voices, but black voices nevertheless.

…..it is a certain faction of white terrorists who are doing this to see if it will work for them as well as it worked for their ancestors…trying to relive the criminal mischief of their ancestors…it is up to you to allow them.

We know who the racists are, the hardest thing is to know, the easiest thing to do these days is expose them, they cannot handle light, evil lives and thrives in darkness and secrecy…dont allow it….expose it when you see it, just like they do in US…make them famous..

You just would not understand. Do you know anything about the history of white feminism and black women? Go and read about womanism or intersectionalism. Tell that to the African people n Cuba, Venezuela, Costa Rico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, and the rest of Latin America.
In a racist world, colour is important; victims cannot – do not – lay down the rules. Rules are made by people who hold power. To return to the substantive point, the article could have been better placed in a white publication.

Some shite is wrong with your head. I have some very dear white friends. A lot of my girlfriends are white. I work for a white oriented firm with some very lovely people. When I ever I come home to the rock, two of my white to skin but black to heart friends come with me. They hang with my friends back home, love Oistins, love Rockly, and love the company of black people. Their families are like my family. I go there and it is like being in my own home. Sometimes my girlfriend comes over by me take up my key and go wherever the france she likes with my car. Think on this, her mother and father does it as well, and sometimes I have one of their cars for weeks. Now these folks are well educated and have two Mercedes Benz 4 x 4. They do not have to drive my car, they just express the love that way. I could tell you more, but I do not think it would make a difference with you because either you were a slave back in the day and understand all the atrocities committed to blacks at the hands of their white oppressors or you are just a disgruntled, sour heart sister who has been burn so many times in your life that you think everyone and everything is evil. You really going to bring ” I did not have sexual relations with that woman” to prove a point? I talking about the people that I know, not about a politician who played his hand accordingly. The Clintons are opportunistic and sly. Man looka, go and find another appropriate example outside political circles to prove your point, here! The stories behind the Clintons support for blacks was part of the spin to obtain plenty of hidden rewards. They did not work for nothing, even their humanitarian efforts in Haiti was lauded in raising a sizable sum for a hospital and medical assistance but not without controversy. Outside of this one white politician, you want to tell me that you do not know of any white people who just adore the company of black people and support them? I hope your position on whites are not base on those you have encountered home. If it is, I can tell you right now that the few hundred white people that I know through business and friendship do not behave like any of the snobs living on the rock. 49. It is strange to read that a white woman cannot write an article about black women. Are we to conclude then that a black historian cannot address a white issue?
We are certainly amplifying a non-issue. There are blacks who denounce black history. What do we do about them?
What should concern us is that no article of this nature was penned by a black woman and forwarded to BU.
