Today’s weekly article is in response to recent questions about my motives for founding Solutions Barbados. I believe that everyone’s actions attract consequences. This belief is based on Jesus’ promise that He will reward us for the beneficial consequences of our responsible actions, and judge us for the harmful consequences of our irresponsible actions. Part of this judgement follows.

“Then He (Jesus) will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

“Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matt 25:41-46)

In my youth, Jesus’ warning was motivation enough for me to try to avoid doing the wrong, and actively do the right. As I accepted responsibilities that impacted others, I intentionally designed plans with the main criterion of not causing harm, for the same reason.

I believe that there is a separate judgement for politicians who oppress others. This belief is based on the description of their judgement recorded in Enoch.

“And all the kings and the mighty and the exalted and those who rule the earth shall fall down before Him on their faces, and worship and set their hope upon that Son of Man, and petition Him and supplicate for mercy at His hands.”

“Nevertheless that Lord of Spirits will so press them that they shall hastily go forth from His presence, and their faces shall be filled with shame, and the darkness grow deeper on their faces. And He will deliver them to the angels for punishment, to execute vengeance on them because they have oppressed His children and His elect.” (Enoch 62: 9-11)

Since people can be oppressed through economic measures that leave them homeless, hungry, or imprisoned, I had no intention of attracting judgement to myself by mismanaging Barbados’ economy. There seems to be a special place in hell reserved for politicians whose policies harm others, and I was determined to avoid that place.

“Hell from beneath is excited about you, to meet you at your coming; It stirs-up the dead for you, all the chief ones of the earth; It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. They all shall speak and say to you: ‘Have you also become as weak as we? Have you become like us? (Isa 14:9-10)

I did not have good examples to follow. Both the BLP and DLP appear to have generally pursued the same 5-point economic strategy of: raising taxes, laying-off the supporters of the other party, employing their own supporters, giving donors corrupting no-bid contracts, and placing the country further in debt.

Both parties were aware that their strategy was not sustainable and would eventually ruin Barbados’ economy. However, they would not change their ways. With only 2 main political parties, our democracy forced them to play a game of musical chairs. Each of them desperately hoped that they would not be seated when the music stopped, and oppressive policies would be required.

To avoid the foreseen mass suffering, we designed an economic recovery plan that provided over $1B surplus revenues within our first year, without raising taxes, without laying off any public workers or reducing their salaries, and without any external borrowing. We achieved this by growing the national economy, improving the management of public services, generally reducing taxes, and effectively addressing corruption.

I tried sharing it with the last administration. However, in response to various armchair advisors at that time, former Prime Minister Stuart gave the criterion of being willing to be judged as a politician, as the qualification for reviewing economic advice. To qualify, we started Solutions Barbados on 1 July 2015 and published our entire plan for public scrutiny the same day.

During the last general election, DLP evidently did their best to avoid the seat when the music stopped. However, the BLP convinced the electorate that they had examined all plans, and that theirs was the best. The public believed them. Now we know that this was not true.

Dr Greenidge of BERT, recently publicly admitted that they did not look at any of the non-austerity plans when developing their severe austerity plan. When I asked whether they would now look at our plan to spare the public any further suffering, there was a resounding no.

To date, the media have decided not to report these critical public admissions. Instead, they have taken the politically partisan decision to promote severe austerity as the only solution. Solutions Barbados continues to exist because the non-austerity solution is still workable, despite the IMF agreement.

If severe austerity was the only solution, then I would join the news media in promoting it. But I know better. The suffering that many have endured under BERT Phase 1, and are about to endure under BERT Phases 2 to 4, is entirely unnecessary. It is still possible to meet the IMF targets without the planned austerity.

Our plan was independently verified as workable without the need for austerity. However, the national associations, whom we approached to also review it, appeared too invested in having the BLP govern, that they provided ridiculous reasons for not reviewing our plan, and not allowing us anywhere near their members.

If any action that I am a part of is found to be oppressive, then I would seeking the public’s assistance for an alternative. If after public consultation oppression was found to be unavoidable, then I would be prepared to make that my defence on judgement day.

None of the Solutions Barbados policies are oppressive, and either Party can implement them. All Members of Parliament are responsible for implementing the best plans for Barbados, regardless of which Party developed them. Before the implementation of BERT Phase 2, all Members of Parliament are well-advised to examine our plan, if for no other reason than to save themselves from an undesirable destiny.

And for that single act alone MM-the one now officially in charge of the public purse-ought to be considered fit for the title of Mugabe so honourably assigned by the BU soothsayer and old ‘master’ Piece of de Rock.

How could the government impose such draconian taxes on the people especially the so-called Sewage contribution when such blatant tax evasion has gone under the radar of political expediency?

Where are the tax refunds promised for income year 2017? In the fuel tank or cubbyhole of the other MM’s Merc?

Well done Enuff and Artax I have stated before that I believe there are about six of these jokers who try to dominate every discussion on the Government ,Waru who start off and then hogs the show ,T Inniss ,Mariposa ,Piece the shite conspiracy theorist,Donna and Gazzerts. They believe if they post shite all day every day that rational people will believe it is true.Waru has been exposed as the liar and fraud that she is,same as the joker T Inniss on these blogs,,a lot of half truths and innuendo.I have challenged her to go to the DPP and she shifting .I have challenged Piece to form his own Party the Mugabe Haters Party to remove Mugabe in 2023 as the only alternative and he shifting all over the place. These persons are shite talkers who hide on BU and bad talk people who have been voted for by the majority of Bajans.I hope you Waru take up the challenge of the meeting in Queens Park if you have any balls and not just a drama queen and fraud.

You said “…better yet, would ya like to meet me…ah was trying to get Ha, Ha and the other wannabe journalist to meet me face to face at their REQUEST…to unmask BU commenters…., but they ran out of balls…would you like to attempt it…”

You asked if I would like to attempt it, meaning meeting with you at MY request. I accepted and now you are talking about I am desperate to meet you and you don’t meet with strangers.

Aren’t Hal Austin and the other wannabe journalists that you were trying to get to meet with you face to face STRANGERS too?

I guess you must be the one now to run out of balls.

I’m not surprised by your cop out, because it’s typical of you. You come to BU making outlandish claims and when anyone asks you to bring proof, you always say you have proof but you’re not sharing it.

You are a BLUFFER. I called your bluff and you folded your hand.

  15. On Monday, December 16, 2013 during a Ministerial Statement to the Parliament, former Finance Minister Chris Sinckler announced that 3,000 employees from both central government and statutory corporations, were to be retrenched early January 2014.

The first tranche of cuts, expected to be 2,000 workers was supposed to have taken place by January 15th, 2014, and government was to have also implemented an effective freeze on hiring in the Public Sector for the next 5 years.

Sinckler also mentioned that, over the current 19 month adjustment period, public sector employment will be reduced by an additional 501 jobs, saving the government approximately $26M………and effective from February 2014, there was also a “freeze” on the payment of increments.

Ironically, an IMF team headed by Nicole Laframboise, which met with government officials, opposition legislators and representatives from the private sector, trade unions and academia as it conducted its 2013 Article IV consultation……

………..endorsed government’s decision to sever 3,000 public sector employees and implement wage cuts in 2014.

The IMF’s 2013 Article IV report is there for all to read.

In response to the retrenchments, then Opposition Leader Mia Mottley was reported as having said the island is in crisis.

According to the December 16, 2013 edition of Caribbean 360, Mottley said:

“The decision to remove 3,000 public workers is the ultimate betrayal of the mandate of this government. We have heard over and over ministers say there will be no layoffs, there will be no sell offs before, during or after the election and the prime minister led the chorus,” she told reporters at a news conference on Friday afternoon.”

“The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) leader warned that the “storm is still coming” and she charged that the measures implemented will not stop the free fall of the Barbados economy.”

“She maintained the government’s economic policies were ill conceived and suggested that the announcement by Finance Minister Chris Sinckler was nothing more than an attempt to please visiting officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who reviewed the island’s economic performance this week.”

“It was not about growth, it was not even about the people who now will not be able to face Christmas with the confidence that they know where their money will come from next year. This was about slowing the process of the International Monetary Fund telling the world what we already knew locally.”

In those days, it seems as though “Mia Cared”………….or did she????

Since the Opposition is also included in the IMF’s Article IV consultation meetings, is it unreasonable to assume Mottley would have known about the pending retrenchments?

But her administration is now in the process of retrenching public sector employees for the similar reasons……. and to PLEASE the IMF.

Is the island currently in crisis?

A politician’s “morning words” and “evening words” are always different.

So too are the words of their yard-fowl supporters.

  16. @The Truth,

Just for the record. This person is a proven fabricator who is obviously in need of help. I received an unsolicited email from this person making allegations against a local insurance company. I asked for the proof, which I have not received, and since then I have been a target of his/her venom, including the fabrication of a cut-and-paste email making further allegations. I do not think that s/he realised that corporate emails are archived.
I have never arranged to meet him/her and have no desire to do so. In any case I am based in the UK.

Some shit is wrong with you. Some shit . This is becoming frightening!

Your interventions here do the BLP no good! They only serve to lend credence to Piece’s assertion that a dictatorship is the PM’s ultimate objective. By the time you are finished all will be converted or at least alert to the possibility that he is correct.

Now a smart person would comment on the substance and refute any claims made simply by expressing his or her own opinion. Instead you repeatedly attack me even when I haven’t made a comment in days!

People live savings snatch at the stroke of a pen
Houses built on govt land allocated for low to middle class bajans to buy all gone
Now this two bit nit wit flew off the paling to defend sh.iit
All least if Mia had any moral gumption she would have set aside a portion of that land on which those houses are built to be owned by middle class barbadians but know gave it all to those who have ownership of more than enough of the rock
Not going to blame Maloney cause he is a business man and when opportunity arrives grab and hold.
I have said many times that Mia is shiftless and her moral compass is broken
Just take a checklist of promises she made to poor barbadians and see if any she kept

  27. Artax January 17, 2019 10:28 AM

And while we’re on the topic of Coverley…….

On Sunday, March 18, 2018, while addressing a BLP meeting at Briar Hall, Christ Church, Mia Mottley was of the opinion Felisha Osula Holder should not be the only individual faces criminal charges as it relates to the death of her son Elijah Holder-Phillips……because she was not solely responsible for the accident.

Mottley was reported as having asked: “How she can face the law courts alone and the person who built that obstruction on the highway does not have to face a single [charge] in this country?”

“She also promised that five BLP lawyers, who are also candidates for the 2018 elections, would defend the 33-year-old mother in her ongoing legal battle. “She shall not be going into that law court alone . . . . This Barbados Labour Party will help represent this young mother because I believe it is a travesty of social justice,” Mottley declared, while naming Kerrie Symmonds, Wilfred Abrahams, Gregory Nicholls, Ralph Thorne, QC, and Dale Marshall, QC, as the woman’s legal representatives.”

Recently, I have seen photos of Mottley and Maloney in each other’s company, hugging and laughing, while Maloney will be laughing his way to the bank as the million$ begin to roll in from the Ross University and Coverley deal.

Does this means that Mottley is no longer of the opinion Maloney should also face charges for the death of Elijah?

Perhaps we should ask Mottley if she REMEMBERED Felisha Osula Holder’s plight and the PROMISE to provide her with legal services……… at the time she was thinking of appointing Dale Marshall as AG, Wilfred Abrams as Minister of Energy and Water Resources and Symmonds as Tourism Minister?

    After all…….”Mia Cares.”

If Mottley truly had the best interest of what she termed ” poor” barbadians she would not have sold off all that property to one rich person she would have made for certain that a sizeable piece of that property landed in the hands of ” poor ” barbadians.

Funny you said that, tens of thousands currently can’t buy land even the middle income earners.

Watch this, acres of rab land is sold for next to nothing, then that same land is subdivided into lots and sold at extravagant prices ..1000 % profit

    This has to be addressed.

What u stated is true. But why keep “piling on” to a already bad policy to make it worse
I reiterate nothing wrong with a shrewd business man looking out for his own interest
However when govt takes on a role which discredit and leaves out the interest of barbadians then something is very wrong
Mottley since May 24th has not been shy in preserving the interest of the rich while presenting a false smile of gratitude to poor barbadians
This deal serves to pay debt and preserves the riches of the wealthy while the poor becomes disenfranchise and debt laden with unconscionable taxes.

  42. Mariposa,
Surely they had to be other construction companies which could have delivered the goods in a timely manner and benefited others. It is time others get a piece of the pie.

Going forward, there are many dilapidated government buildings that can be restored to pristine condition for future purposes, employment at best for the local artisans.

  43. Subject to correction

    (a) Government sold the land to X
    (b) X builds the accommodation.
    (c) X owns the accommodation.
    (d) X rents the accommodation.

    Is that the true picture?

  44. @Lorenzo
” I have stated I am a supporter of this Government and Ms Mottley”.
Each man is entitled to his likes or dislikes, but is there a point at which you will say “Barbados first”.

The electorate delivered a resounding defeat to the DLP. That party lost in its strongholds because many of its supporters felt they did not have the country interest at heart and voted against them. Can you see yourself reaching that stage?

You have divided the politics into BLP and DLP, but we are past that stage. We, “Piece’s People Party of Political Patriots” (PPPPP) welcomes you.

  45. In some jurisdictions paying 3 times the value for government land could be construed as politically motivated but in bahbadus it is just good logically business practice.

Only conspiracy theorists could possible think there is something wrong with paying 3 times the value for government land.

We should all be thanking and praising the buyer and the seller for putting bahbadus fus

  46. Nine of nine

    a-d correct

A land baron .sort of. But not far away
    Not blaming him

  47. Theo Gazzerts,we are past that stage ,the stage where bajans has thrown out the DLP.This is 7 months a new Government has been in place, only a brainless moron would expect a new government to solve problems which were allowedto escalate for ten years and 90 days….This Government inherited a very bad situation and in my view are trying their best, and most rational bajans would think so,and therefore come to the conclusion that Barbados is first at present,so in my view there is no stage to reach capiche.Unfortunately some persons had to be sent home, which would have happened, whoever was in Government was in office,so I ain,t buying what the tag team selling it does not make sense, and certainly not joining anything involving the shite conspiracy theorist or you, capiche.

  48. X brings Ross to Barbados

  49. Do u understand a piece of once owned govt land by the stroke of a pen has trippled in price because of a buyer with vision and intuition understands that land does not devalue in price
As a matter of fact the moment that the ink dried the land price tripled in value because govt sold it as Mia said three times worth its value
On paper the sale makes govt looks good short term
