The Grenville Phillips Column – Judgement Day

Today’s weekly article is in response to recent questions about my motives for founding Solutions Barbados. I believe that everyone’s actions attract consequences. This belief is based on Jesus’ promise that He will reward us for the beneficial consequences of our responsible actions, and judge us for the harmful consequences of our irresponsible actions. Part of this judgement follows.

“Then He (Jesus) will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

“Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matt 25:41-46)

In my youth, Jesus’ warning was motivation enough for me to try to avoid doing the wrong, and actively do the right. As I accepted responsibilities that impacted others, I intentionally designed plans with the main criterion of not causing harm, for the same reason.

I believe that there is a separate judgement for politicians who oppress others. This belief is based on the description of their judgement recorded in Enoch.

“And all the kings and the mighty and the exalted and those who rule the earth shall fall down before Him on their faces, and worship and set their hope upon that Son of Man, and petition Him and supplicate for mercy at His hands.”

“Nevertheless that Lord of Spirits will so press them that they shall hastily go forth from His presence, and their faces shall be filled with shame, and the darkness grow deeper on their faces. And He will deliver them to the angels for punishment, to execute vengeance on them because they have oppressed His children and His elect.” (Enoch 62: 9-11)

Since people can be oppressed through economic measures that leave them homeless, hungry, or imprisoned, I had no intention of attracting judgement to myself by mismanaging Barbados’ economy. There seems to be a special place in hell reserved for politicians whose policies harm others, and I was determined to avoid that place.

“Hell from beneath is excited about you, to meet you at your coming; It stirs-up the dead for you, all the chief ones of the earth; It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. They all shall speak and say to you: ‘Have you also become as weak as we? Have you become like us? (Isa 14:9-10)

I did not have good examples to follow. Both the BLP and DLP appear to have generally pursued the same 5-point economic strategy of: raising taxes, laying-off the supporters of the other party, employing their own supporters, giving donors corrupting no-bid contracts, and placing the country further in debt.

Both parties were aware that their strategy was not sustainable and would eventually ruin Barbados’ economy. However, they would not change their ways. With only 2 main political parties, our democracy forced them to play a game of musical chairs. Each of them desperately hoped that they would not be seated when the music stopped, and oppressive policies would be required.

To avoid the foreseen mass suffering, we designed an economic recovery plan that provided over $1B surplus revenues within our first year, without raising taxes, without laying off any public workers or reducing their salaries, and without any external borrowing. We achieved this by growing the national economy, improving the management of public services, generally reducing taxes, and effectively addressing corruption.

I tried sharing it with the last administration. However, in response to various armchair advisors at that time, former Prime Minister Stuart gave the criterion of being willing to be judged as a politician, as the qualification for reviewing economic advice. To qualify, we started Solutions Barbados on 1 July 2015 and published our entire plan for public scrutiny the same day.

During the last general election, DLP evidently did their best to avoid the seat when the music stopped. However, the BLP convinced the electorate that they had examined all plans, and that theirs was the best. The public believed them. Now we know that this was not true.

Dr Greenidge of BERT, recently publicly admitted that they did not look at any of the non-austerity plans when developing their severe austerity plan. When I asked whether they would now look at our plan to spare the public any further suffering, there was a resounding no.

To date, the media have decided not to report these critical public admissions. Instead, they have taken the politically partisan decision to promote severe austerity as the only solution. Solutions Barbados continues to exist because the non-austerity solution is still workable, despite the IMF agreement.

If severe austerity was the only solution, then I would join the news media in promoting it. But I know better. The suffering that many have endured under BERT Phase 1, and are about to endure under BERT Phases 2 to 4, is entirely unnecessary. It is still possible to meet the IMF targets without the planned austerity.

Our plan was independently verified as workable without the need for austerity. However, the national associations, whom we approached to also review it, appeared too invested in having the BLP govern, that they provided ridiculous reasons for not reviewing our plan, and not allowing us anywhere near their members.

If any action that I am a part of is found to be oppressive, then I would seeking the public’s assistance for an alternative. If after public consultation oppression was found to be unavoidable, then I would be prepared to make that my defence on judgement day.

None of the Solutions Barbados policies are oppressive, and either Party can implement them. All Members of Parliament are responsible for implementing the best plans for Barbados, regardless of which Party developed them. Before the implementation of BERT Phase 2, all Members of Parliament are well-advised to examine our plan, if for no other reason than to save themselves from an undesirable destiny.

  • This blog is jampacked with some demons eh. Who financed all the infrastructure at Coverley–roads, new roundabout, utilities, drainage? Not Maloney? If the valuation was in fact $9M and government got $13.5M that is good business under the circumstances rather than collect $0 while Maloney rented them to RUSM. Note I said RENT to RUSM, therefore what students are paying to RUSM is unlikely to be what Maloney is receiving from RUSM. That $13.5M is the equivalent to what government would receive from the sale of 675 houses. How many houses sell at the Villages since inception? Nuff birds get licked down with that one rockstone. Yet we have a jackass here talking about FV of land as if the land isn’t sold with the units. Yuh mean when I buy muh house up in Coverley govt still gine own the land? Not to mention, they had no problem with the units’ unsuitability for low income earners in terms of cost and constraints to expansion. The Grotto is low income?#notevenjesusable

  • The BLP yardfowl got one thing right! I WAS a supporter though not ever a member of the DLP. Until my faith started to waver after David Thompson’s first budget address, which lacking in substance and totally deflating. Nothing they did after that improved my opinion. And then came CLICO! Still, I was unable to forget the numerous scandals of the former BLP government, the prison and the Barrack building being the worst of the lot. The lesser of the two evils, I thought, was still the DLP. And so in 2013 I reluctantly placed my ‘X” for the DLP at 5.45 p.m. And they promptly set about proving me wrong with CahIll, the Four Seasons and numerous scandals and the UNAPOLOGETIC on recent promises such as tuition fees at the UWI and callous layoffs without mercy or compensation.

And then there was the Speaker and the Prime Minister’s utterances that clearly showed his allegiance to his friends rather than to justice. And then there was the talk of a “POLITICAL CLASS” seeming to separate them from the general population – UNACCEPTABLE!

And the ARROGANCE that far exceeded anything ever heard from the mouth of Owen and company!.

Now, you speak of FACTS. I rely on Artax to remind me of those. I am one who believes in ATTITUDE. Attitude determines actions. And language reveals attitude. It is inevitable that something will slip that tells the discerning who we are. Usually I can determine what actions are going to taken based on attitude. The first sign of the DLP’s bad attitude was when they informed Bajans that they were elected to govern and had ALL THE BRAINS THEY NEEDED TO DO SO! They needed nobody to tell them anything! We the people should sit down and shut up!. Then there was Ronald Jones talking about “cracking some heads”. There was the PM and his “It is affecting me too.” There was the Donville classic – “They will only lose some weight.”

And so I joined the multitudes on BU lambasting the DLP and was promptly cussed by AC as a BLP yardfowl. I expressed my intention to vote BLP as there seemed no other option. I did so at 5.45 p.m. as I was not enthusiastic about my choice. But I did so.

And now at the first sign of disagreement here comes the Lorenzo rooster and calling me a DLP yard fowl!

Which is it! Am I a DLP yardfowl or a BLP yardfowl?

And ALL I did was express the opinion that Mia’s shiting of her father showed a bad entitlement attitude and revealed where her priorities lie.

This apparently is “lies, misinformation, gossip” besmirching the pristine character of the prime minister.

No it is NOT. It is an OPINION.

Do you and your party wish to deprive me even of that???!!!! Do you wish to crack my head too? Is this the equivalent of inciting a riot? How is this “destabilizing” the country???????

You are quite frightening! But not frightening enough.

    Lorenzo of the Barnyard breed,

You speak highly of Artax because you are AFRAID OF HIS FACTS. That will not stop him because unlike you he is a free bird.

P.S. You really should ask the same Artax what he thinks of my impartiality. He’s already told me.

And that is a fact for you.

    I’m a free bird forever!

    And the rooster replies-

    “Cockadoodle do!”

Because that is, after all, what roosters do, along with flying low!

I was not trying to mislead anyone the 450 million seemed a bit steep to me and I was in bed preparing to go to sleep.
That is the reason I put “using your figures” at the bottom of my calculations

450M seem way to much for Maloney and also for Government at the time with out getting some sort of external loan.

    The correct figure is 150 000 000
I just forgot to divide the 36 000 000 by the 12 months.

The calculations was there for the public to see

Forgive me, but I listened to your video. You sound like a very angry woman and one who seriously needs help in this situation. However, do you honestly believe by begging openly for someone to help you, that you will get someone bold enough to remove those you claim have illegally taken over your mothers property? If they are building, it means that they have obtained the ”legal” rights to do so after either acquiring or obtaining the land by some ”default” legal or illegal basis that you are powerless to overcome. This is not a matter that is going to be handled properly by the number of videos you post. Others who have suffered the same fate as you under the name lawyers need to come forth with their documentation. There must be a pooling of what little resources they might still have at their disposal and seek to bring this matter to the Caribbean Court of Justice. Jackie right now your best bet is using the CCJ. They are fully aware of Barbados atrocious legal system and the purposely set delays in order for justice to favour their particular nefarious script. RIght now the CCJ and Barbados are not the best of friends because were true justice is meted, the Barbados legal system is not accustomed to rulings that are base on what was right or what was wrong. Wrong is so right in the eyes of our legal system that it has many accepting it as a commonality in the normal scheme of things. That is my piece of advice to you. Lord I would love these brutes to mess wid my family property, but then again, they would never!!

He has never been a serious contender in this fight against corruption and political gluttony

In fact, his acceptance of MUGABE contracts show his price.

Note how he was lying about protecting their identities YET IN 2019 FOUR EFFENG YEARS BEFORE A GENERAL ELECTION, the same people this Liar claimed needed their identities protected, HAVE DECLARED THEMSELVES.

Maybe as he says de ole man is a child BUT IT SHOULD BE EVIDENT TO YOU AND OTHER ADULTS HERE, that Grenville is the real child AND PUERILE LIAR TO BOOT

” Anyone found guilty of directly or indirectly soliciting or accepting financial or other award or those found guilty of offering such bribes are guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of $250,000 or imprisonment for two years, or both. Members of the board or the tribunal who fail to disclose any conflict of interest could find themselves paying a fine of $100,000.”

The Issue that faces ALL INCOMING GOVERNMENTS IS THE ISSUE OF UNBIASED ACCOUNTABILITY

The common issue and central concern of people specifically the electorate is the public perception AND REALITY that a former government administration HAS TEIFED.

Let me suggest this to you and your incoming government Senator.

I suggest that in 3 months your party floats the promise and commitment for an Ombudsman Entity which will act as an oversight entity for all outstanding issues

And be empowered by law to address same by the regulations and laws of our country.

Select some outstanding persons like Jeff Cumberbatch and Leighton Leighton Trotman and a few regional and international persons who cant be bribed.

Let bajans see that you are committed to cleaning up the mess of the DLP and the BLP BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THAT YOU ARE PUTTING THESE THINGS IN PLACE, before you are elected to govern
