Today’s weekly article is in response to recent questions about my motives for founding Solutions Barbados. I believe that everyone’s actions attract consequences. This belief is based on Jesus’ promise that He will reward us for the beneficial consequences of our responsible actions, and judge us for the harmful consequences of our irresponsible actions. Part of this judgement follows.

“Then He (Jesus) will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

“Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matt 25:41-46)

In my youth, Jesus’ warning was motivation enough for me to try to avoid doing the wrong, and actively do the right. As I accepted responsibilities that impacted others, I intentionally designed plans with the main criterion of not causing harm, for the same reason.

I believe that there is a separate judgement for politicians who oppress others. This belief is based on the description of their judgement recorded in Enoch.

“And all the kings and the mighty and the exalted and those who rule the earth shall fall down before Him on their faces, and worship and set their hope upon that Son of Man, and petition Him and supplicate for mercy at His hands.”

“Nevertheless that Lord of Spirits will so press them that they shall hastily go forth from His presence, and their faces shall be filled with shame, and the darkness grow deeper on their faces. And He will deliver them to the angels for punishment, to execute vengeance on them because they have oppressed His children and His elect.” (Enoch 62: 9-11)

Since people can be oppressed through economic measures that leave them homeless, hungry, or imprisoned, I had no intention of attracting judgement to myself by mismanaging Barbados’ economy. There seems to be a special place in hell reserved for politicians whose policies harm others, and I was determined to avoid that place.

“Hell from beneath is excited about you, to meet you at your coming; It stirs-up the dead for you, all the chief ones of the earth; It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. They all shall speak and say to you: ‘Have you also become as weak as we? Have you become like us? (Isa 14:9-10)

I did not have good examples to follow. Both the BLP and DLP appear to have generally pursued the same 5-point economic strategy of: raising taxes, laying-off the supporters of the other party, employing their own supporters, giving donors corrupting no-bid contracts, and placing the country further in debt.

Both parties were aware that their strategy was not sustainable and would eventually ruin Barbados’ economy. However, they would not change their ways. With only 2 main political parties, our democracy forced them to play a game of musical chairs. Each of them desperately hoped that they would not be seated when the music stopped, and oppressive policies would be required.

To avoid the foreseen mass suffering, we designed an economic recovery plan that provided over $1B surplus revenues within our first year, without raising taxes, without laying off any public workers or reducing their salaries, and without any external borrowing. We achieved this by growing the national economy, improving the management of public services, generally reducing taxes, and effectively addressing corruption.

I tried sharing it with the last administration. However, in response to various armchair advisors at that time, former Prime Minister Stuart gave the criterion of being willing to be judged as a politician, as the qualification for reviewing economic advice. To qualify, we started Solutions Barbados on 1 July 2015 and published our entire plan for public scrutiny the same day.

During the last general election, DLP evidently did their best to avoid the seat when the music stopped. However, the BLP convinced the electorate that they had examined all plans, and that theirs was the best. The public believed them. Now we know that this was not true.

Dr Greenidge of BERT, recently publicly admitted that they did not look at any of the non-austerity plans when developing their severe austerity plan. When I asked whether they would now look at our plan to spare the public any further suffering, there was a resounding no.

To date, the media have decided not to report these critical public admissions. Instead, they have taken the politically partisan decision to promote severe austerity as the only solution. Solutions Barbados continues to exist because the non-austerity solution is still workable, despite the IMF agreement.

If severe austerity was the only solution, then I would join the news media in promoting it. But I know better. The suffering that many have endured under BERT Phase 1, and are about to endure under BERT Phases 2 to 4, is entirely unnecessary. It is still possible to meet the IMF targets without the planned austerity.

Our plan was independently verified as workable without the need for austerity. However, the national associations, whom we approached to also review it, appeared too invested in having the BLP govern, that they provided ridiculous reasons for not reviewing our plan, and not allowing us anywhere near their members.

If any action that I am a part of is found to be oppressive, then I would seeking the public’s assistance for an alternative. If after public consultation oppression was found to be unavoidable, then I would be prepared to make that my defence on judgement day.

None of the Solutions Barbados policies are oppressive, and either Party can implement them. All Members of Parliament are responsible for implementing the best plans for Barbados, regardless of which Party developed them. Before the implementation of BERT Phase 2, all Members of Parliament are well-advised to examine our plan, if for no other reason than to save themselves from an undesirable destiny.

ah told the boy to go back in his hole before he gets hurt, he thinks this is some child’s game, he has nothing to offer the blog but shite talk and all of it focused on me…and cannot see what’s ahead…very few can..he got me on the brain and since they are so busy climbing over each other likes crabs on a blog no less……everything will fall into place and they will miss the event…

    why don’t you go back in your hole before I really send someone to meet with you, you think this is some game that you are used to playing with those who know better…you will get hurt, badly hurt. Have you nothing to contribute…other than me..that is all you seem to come on BU to do. {Quote}

I will get hurt badly, what!!! You believe you can come here to THREATEN and SCARE people? A fraud and liar like you? You are the first person on BU to threaten someone. You don’t know yuh ass want banning.

This isn’t a game but you hiding behind a fake name to sully the names of people without proof?

I BELIEVE Hal Austin when he said “This person is a proven fabricator who is obviously in need of help. I received an unsolicited email from this person making allegations against a local insurance company. I asked for the proof, which I have not received, and since then I have been a target of his/her venom, including the fabrication of a cut-and-paste email making further allegations.”

It sounds like something you would do. You admitted to fabricating stories about having information on certain things that are happening in Barbados. That is why you could never post the proof.

The more you post, the more you expose yourself as a NUISANCE, FRAUD and a LIAR, and now you issuing threats. People like you will give Barbados Underground a bad name, because people usually focus on the bad to rate anything.

I don’t want BU to get a bad name because of frauds like you and since the other people on BU like they are scared of you, I will come here for you.

X brings Ross to Barbados or did you meant to say X facilitated Ross, then again…..a fly on the wall has value.

  4. As it relates to the current retrenchment program of this BLP administration, the known DLP “limited range chickens” have been questioning the timing of the lay-offs, which was during the Christmas season.

However, during 2014 when their “party was in power,” they reasoned the retrenchments were necessary to save the island and the dollar from devaluing.

During his December 13, 2013 Ministerial Statement, Sinckler said:

“It is never easy for any government or Minister of Finance to have to introduce measures that strike at the heart of a person’s financial and social livelihood. This is tough on all of us over here and it will be on all officers of the governmental system.”

“We understand and empathize with the anguish which these measures will cause the many people affected by them. They will be your constituents and ours. But having tried our utmost over the past five years and some to avoid this road, the exigencies of the negative impact of the world’s worst recession have dictated that we cannot continue on the course which we have been pursuing.”

We are aware that the Mottley led administration’s reasons for retrenching civil servants are similar to those of the DLP.

But the DLP “limited range chickens” were encouraging us to accept Sinckler’s sentiments as indicated above…..

………but are now encouraging us to reject similar sentiments being offered by this current BLP administration.

Hence, the “morning words” and “evening words” of political “limited range chicken” are not the same.

  5. Ross students are said to be renting rooms at Coverly for $ 2000 Barbados dollars per month.

The cash flow from these students appears to be $24 MILLION to $30 MILLION Barbados dollars PER YEAR.

    Maloney is a winner.

  6. Mariposa

How would any government have profited from the same piece of land and
at what point in time in the future would the land have become fiscal long term gain to any government or the economy.

the pass government profit none from said piece of land over 10 years.

  7. Today I witness Ross University bus madly manoeuvring through congested, bumper to bumper tight traffic at the Sagicor roundabout and it surrounds.. surely lives were at risk.

Could not that accommodation been built way closer to the “university” ON Government land , contracted X company to build the accommodations and retain ownership of land, units and rent for the life of the program?

  8. Nineofnine

“Why are we as human beings think that we have to be regulated and governed as stock?

I think I can answer your question: because the passions and desires of men won’t conform to the dictates of reason and justice without constraints…
And devoid of the law whether moral or civil, man it subject the will, and man with the strongest will rules …

  9. How naive.

Do you understand what is a deal?

  10. Nineofnine

I know you have read John Locke’s social contract? … so therefore, you ought not to have ask such a question…

  11. Minister of Home Affairs Edmund Hinkson has been relieved of some of his duties.

A press release tonight from the Barbados Government Information Service stated that Hinkson will no longer have responsibility for the Royal Barbados Police Force.

In addition, Hinkson, who was appointed to that ministry when Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced her new Cabinet after a Barbados Labour Party win at the polls on May 24, will also no longer be responsible for the Preservation of Public Order, the Forensic Services Centre, the Criminal Justice Research Unit and the Police Complaints Authority.

    http://www.nationnews.com/nationnews/news/233392/hicksons-duties-cut

  12. Being humble is not naive, please .

    What was the deal?..
    3x the value of land?
That just goes to show that value is determined by the owner and not the valuer.
That “deal” was not necessary, not when you “own” government land, have the National Housing Corporation, and Collection Agencies.(BRA/Vat office)…. one stop shopping.

Do you wish to expound on the deal, maybe there are some other benefits not disclosed..

  13. Nine

The planning was a rush job to accommodate the Ross relocation and the unfinished/unoccupied houses/spots at coverley was probably the best available option at that time.
Contractor X would have to be paid out of the public purse to build the houses (you already know the state of the economy as far as public financing).

Government, although getting money from the renting, would also have to be paying out for the maintenance and up keep

Contractor fees and maintenance fees would probably use up much of the incoming rent.

Instead of paying out those fees, from the public purse, Government is pocketing 13.5 millions now along with land tax in the future years. this should make up for the lost in what ever little profit margins rent, without the “headaches” of maintenance.

  14. Hants
According to the papers, Maloney was the winner from any rental units because the government was only getting a cut from any unit sold not from any that was rented.

  15. Lexicon

    NO.
Sometimes its best to leave such writings on the shelf to avoid subliminal suggestions and innuendo that is not in ones best interest.
Why should I have not asked that question?
See, it challenges the intellect and establish ground… therefore, by your comment and definition, Law is the mechanism used to control another and renders lawmakers as rulers/anarchists/dictators of the weak. What a determination!

  16. John2

    Per your disclosure.
No money to government from rentals..redacted
Cut to government from sold units…didn’t know units are being/was sold ……. true?
Government pockets $13 M plus land taxes.. that is in comparison to $24-30M in rental per annum.
    Government avoids fees and maintenance..

Honestly John, we need a new accountant, journalist also add a negotiator, planner and technocrat among others

Then we can proceed, certainly, we will not war over a maths problem.

  17. Nineofnine

“Law is a mechanism used to control another”

But without the law what would stop you from robbing, raping, and murdering?

  18. Nineofnine

Without the law there is no moral boundaries…

  19. Lexicon

But without the law what would stop you from robbing, raping, and murdering?

    LOVE, COMPASSION

  20. And yes I know of some units that were sold. Not the set for Ross of the set that were completed for Ross though.

  21. *not of the set that wer completed for ross.

  22. John2

    1500 students x $2000 rent per month x 12 months = $36,000 000. per year in rental fees.
Even if the rental population is half (750) that”s $18, 000 000. per annum
times the duration of the graduate course. minimum 4 years
Government … $13.5 one time payment (plus taxes per annum bearing in mind the land value is 3x smaller)…compared to
Contractor X …$72 – 144 Million per graduate cycle minimum.

Do I understand the deal?… Yes I do.
    Is it a good deal?…………..ask a negotiator.

  23. Nineofnine
Love and compassion nonsense … had that been the case there would not need for the judicial system … the fact of the matter is man is born evil …. and for every good the comes into the world there is a corresponding evil…

  24. Nineofnine

The reality is no moral system can be effective unless it is universally applied…
    ..

  25. @Hants
    Yours @10.43pm

Mia lighten Hinkson’s load, that many hands light work didn’t seem to work well for Hinkson but I wouldn’t say the new Minister is an improvement.

Her next step should be to merge some Ministries, some of her Ministers are no more than glorified back benchers.

  26. Nine

Did you read the part that said government was making nothing if the units were rented out?

    36 000 000 divided by 2000/room = 18000 room divided by 4 bedrooms per unit = 4,500units x 100 000/unit =
    $450 000 000 construction cost alone

That 12.5 year before construction cost is recovered.

Then add maintenance cost over the years

And this is a government that is going through debt restructuring, laying off workers, taxing doing everything to increase revenue and reduce expenditure.

    using your figures

  27. @ Sargeant,

How many ministers it takes to……..lol

  28. Lexicon

That moral system starts with you.

  30. john2

    For the sake of Clarity.

    Is Coverley a Government venture?
Why was developer X in possession of the housing stock
    Is Coverley a Private Venture?
How could it be established on Government land that is now sold to the private investors/developers?

    Similarly,

Are there 2 Coverleys or stages/sections
Can you sell property to clients (house and Land) and yet the land is owned by another?

Is it true that some gated communities are built (and units sold) on rented lands?

    So much confusion.

@john2 is an idiot at basic maths and puts forward a stupid argument to justify.

If 1 Unit is 4 bedrooms (4 individuals)
    4500 Units x 4 bedrooms = 18,000 bedrooms (individuals)

Has Ross brought 18,000 people to Coverley to live between students, support staff and administration totals?

However, when people (BLP) rush to deceive the public they always come with erroneous information to mislead john public.

    “No one is born evil”

I knew when you were in your mother’s womb; I sanctified you when you were in you mother’s womb…

That is the great philosophical debate: tabula rasa or the blank late … John locke believed that experienced was written on the human mind tabula rasa Descartes believed that we are born with certain inclinations and predispositions to do good or evil….

  38. Nineofnine

Love and compassion is what is refined as pleasure and pain principles of morality or what secular humanists would defined as evolutionary ethics … you keep those behaviours which causes pleasure and get rid of those which causes pain … kant says that no system of morality can be effective unless it has within it a categorical imperative …. or an universal application…
