21-year-old Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne is the island’s latest murder victim to date. Alleyne, a cousin of Rihanna’s, was shot and killed on Boxing Day.

Based on my count, the total number of murders for 2017 is at least 31 persons. The emphasis on my count is important because figures on the Nation and  Barbados Today websites (which are my data sources), do not appear to add up. For example, an article on nationnews.com (the website for the Nation’s print newspaper) dated December 28 lists Alleyne’s death as the 30th murder for the year. While on Barbados Today, an article dated December 27 stated that the murder count for the year was 28.

Below is a table that I put together a few months ago tracking murders in Barbados. The table includes victim names, ages, gender, dates, et cetera. My data sources have always been The Nation and Barbados Today (two local newspapers). Interested readers need only Google the victim’s name to find out the details as reported by the press. For example, the Google query: “Marvin Victor + Barbados” (without the quotation marks) will return several results relating to the victim.

The following charts are based on my table above:

Figures for the Murders by Month chart does not add up to 31 because  it wasn’t clear at the time – to me – what month the victim (Steven Weare) passed away.

    I wonder how many murder victims the ruling elite on this island will produce in 2018. 40, 50 or 60? And what about another Crop Over massacre? How many soldiers will the Shadow King of St. Michael North West send out for execution?

    Without any doubt one needs a security vest, a SUV with RFT and barbed wire around the mansion on this island – like Jamaica, St. Vincent and Guyana, to name the three worst caves in the Caribbean.

    Has everyone noticed that all but two of these deaths are of men, mostly young men. Almost certainly all or most of the accused are also men, mostly young men. Barbados is a dangerous place principally for young men BECAUSE of young men.

    The inconvenient truth is that men, especially young men don’t value life. Perhaps it is because that helping to create a life costs men so little that they put little value on life.

    I wonder if men would value life more if instead of the pleasure of male orgasm they felt as well the intense pain of labour?

    Looking at the numbers without applying analysis is simplistic Kevin. For example, how many of the murders were caused by guns.

    What does it matter, at a basis level, what the instrument of murder was/is.

    Based of the numbers given, it seems that the current rate is around the mean

    But from all the perceptions given in media we are surprised that we don’t have much higher numbers for recent years.

    You don’t think we should be concerned if analysis were to show murders as a result of guns trending upwards if the total murder number is tracking the mean number?

    Of course, but that statistic is of second order importance.

    Yet it will give a better understanding as to causation

    But based on how ‘crime and violence’ or more precisely ‘gun violence’ has been cover here, on BU, and elsewhere, left us surprised that an average number were killed over time, especially over the last few years.

    Agree with your view but the tracking of the mean must be considered against the fact there is an increasing lawlessness therefore the tipping point factor is in play. Surely you appreciate the advantages to be gained by being proactive?

    Maybe davids right see if welfare payments dates align with dates of trouble, when people get checks they maybe party or are set upon.See if any of those people killed were on assisstance.

    As I said in a recent post, we need to better
    analyse statistics. There is tremendous
    nonsense being put in the public domain.
    There needs to be a deeper analysis of
    WHY the crimes were committed.
    Were they:
    Crimes of passion
    Robberies
    Illegal deals gone wrong etc

    For the NON-spiritual “EYE” that does not discern TRUTH from ERROR, one would assume that this GUY has his eisegesis & exegesis like a row of ducks wonderfully lined off…

    Like the author of these heart-breaking STATS in BIM – Wells’ heteroskedasticity & homoscedasticity reads like an exercise in empirical econometrics, as if mathematical computational science is an exact disciple and that somehow we have the patent on “ABSOLUTE TRUTH”… (SMDH)

    What is even more striking is his revelation that God has somehow killed a total of some 2,821,364 persons in the entire Good Book – but get this: SATAN (THE ACCURSED REBEL &THE REAL BASTERD) in this whole sordid human affair has only taken out the mere 10 children of the Patriarch Job (#ROFLMBO – numbers he shares with God as He is the One who granted permission in the first place)…

    Yet, intelligent, supposedly learned men accept this drivel as eye-opening scholarship!!!

    So after a long protracted slog of “data gathering” based on the analysis of statistical, mathematical modelling, in the hope of forming an econometric hypothesis, Bro. Wells concludes that between God & Satan: (Elohim killed some 25 million while Satan only took out 60)…

    What could not be hypothesized was the numbers before the Flood (if one is to accept the Biblical Worldview) which some theological scholars suggest that population numbers before the Flood were somewhat typical of the world today, hence the words of Jesus: “As it was in the days of NOAH”…

    God keeps getting the “RAP” for the EVIL in this dark world however, this is what the “GOOD BOOK” says about the wanton bloodshed upon the land portending a typology of the primordial “CURSE OF CAIN” – a lineage of EVIL that has run counter to GOD’S Goodness right down throughout the annals of human history to our present day…

    The BIBLE states: ‘I will also turn My face from them, and they will profane My secret place; then robbers will enter and profane it. Make the chain, for the land, is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence. ‘Therefore, I will bring the worst of the nations, and they will possess their houses. I will also make the pride of the strong ones cease, and their holy places will be profaned.…(Ez 7:22-24)

    In Isaiah 59:3: “For your hands are defiled with blood And your fingers with iniquity; Your lips have spoken falsehood, Your tongue mutters wickedness…”

    Jeremiah 6:7: “As a well keeps its waters fresh, so she keeps fresh her wickedness. Violence and destruction are heard in her; Sickness and wounds are ever before Me…”

    Ezekiel 8:17: He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations which they have committed here, that they have filled the land with violence and provoked Me repeatedly? For behold, they are putting the twig to their nose…”

    Ezekiel 9:9: Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is very, very great, and the land is filled with blood and the city is full of perversion; for they say, ‘The LORD has forsaken the land, and the LORD does not see!’

    Ezekiel 11:6: “You have multiplied your slain in this city, filling its streets with them…”

    Ezekiel 18:12: “They oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but lifts up his eyes to the idols and commits abomination…”

    Regardless of what men may say, the “CHARACTER” of GOD will be vindicated and all of creation will see for themselves the subterfuge of SATAN and all those who’ve deceptively & willfully followed him…

    Maybe Messrs Wells et al can also level further diabolical aspersions at THE CREATOR GOD by accusing Him for all the wars ever fought & all the blood spilled upon the canvas of human creation – including ABORTIONS, INFANTICIDE, HUMAN SACRIFICES, TRADE in the souls of men & every other known despicable evil perpetrated on human kind since time immemorial…

    Just maybe, 2018 won’t be a Happy New Year after all given the level of predictably ominous scenarios elucidated by the modern-day pundits who foresee that WORLD WAR 3 is an inevitability given the fractious nature of human relations & the invisibly dark forces at world from within the Synagogue of Satan…

    In a perfect world there would be no murders but let us be real.

    The yearly murder rate in Barbados is about 30 and hs not increased in the last 10 years.

    The REAL PROBLEMS are.

    Too many illegal Guns smuggled into Barbados.

    Too many Drugs smuggled into Barbados.

    Too many unemployed young people living in poverty.

    The Caribbean is one of the more violent regions in the world!

    If New York (with many more guns per person) had the same murder rate as Barbados, then New York would have nearly 1000 murders last year instead of the 286 murders it recorded. Trinidad with a population of 1.4 million had almost as many murders (490) as New York (pop: 8.5 million) and Los Angeles (pop: 3.8 million) combined (551). A single parish in Jamaica with a population of 180 000 had more murders last year than New York. In fact, in 2017, there were almost as many murders in Jamaica as in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles combined. St Lucia with a population of 179 000 had 57 murders in 2017.

    As you can see too many in our region (not including South American) countries. Given the spread of drugs made easier by CSME there is a new dynamic here.

    Then we ought to copy the State of California and take both the mystique and profit incentives out of the ‘illegal’ drug business by turning it into any other ‘regulated’ business.

    Then most of those murders would be transmuted as possible fatal overdoses like alcoholics.

    The war on marijuana has been lost. It’s time for peace talks and armistice.

    But we doubt very much the players (including the drug enforcement agencies created since the 1970’s) in this big money spinning business would want to concede with too many jobs and bribe money at stake.

    It is we Bajans who have created the perfect conditions for the growth of the drugs industry and by extension the high levels of crime that has mirrored its rise.

    However, i empathise with the views of Walter with regard to the freedom of movement from within the CMSE. I know that it is not politically correct to accuse our fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters of bringing disorder to our island home …… however?

    Miller, we Bajans are the equivalent of the lowly wilderbeast; in stark contrast to those ruthless lion-like Jamaicans who are conditioned to survive in a harsh urban landscape. Where the law of the land is to kill or be killed! Ditto Guyana, Trinidad, Antigua, St Vincent, et al.

    Most of the beastly atrocities committed by those of Caribbean descent in the UK have Jamaican blood in them. Yes, i know that they are here in greater numbers, but from my experience, i can testify to you that these people have amongst their ranks some violent, hardcore individuals. Their culture has a naked brutality that does not allow them to compromise. As can be seen in an astonishing story that has just been released in the UK media.

    With respect to our fellow CMSE brothers and sisters they have little time to respect our small island ways. They will do what is required to move ahead.

    The Caribbean region’s leaders have, wholeheartedly, embraced the drug’s trade. The region is a transit route or should i say a hub for the drug lords and is carried out under the umbrella of our tourist industry. Tell me something – Miller – do you think that it is only rum and potable water that are on board those gigantic cruise ships? And what of those fancy hotels and big-up houses dotted throughout the island? They are warehouses for the storage of drugs.

    As we have aligned our economy towards the tourist industry at the expense of all other industries then you will see the local regional population feeding on the scraps of the drug’s trade whilst supplying the domestic, lower-end drugs market.

    The turf fight is in its infancy. We are going to have to get used to the destruction that it will leave in its path.

    Gracelyn Greenidge, 41, was found dead in her apartment at 50 Driftwood Avenue on July 29, 1997 by a co-worker who had become concerned when she did not show up for work at the Christie Street senior’s residence, where she was a nursing assistant.

    Your soundbite mischaracterizes our argument.

    We suggested that if more information about murder was available that it would be unlikely that any government of Barbados would take the fundamental actions needed like happens in the Nordic countries, for example.

    To further explain. The lack of resources has been cited as a primary causal reason for serious crimes. No government of Barbados will ever be willing to deal structurally with that.

    Do you know how many studies successive governments have had done, the rest of society too, and nobody ever took them seriously. Government might not even have a way to tract these. There may not even be an institutional memory that they existed. A lot of them may be as pretty as shiiiite but just as anachronistic as well. But brilliant studies nonetheless.

    @ David, yes, murders by the gun have increased substantially over the years, no doubt. However murder is murder. Those numbers represents the hard cold data, from high’s of 35 to low’s of 19 over the past 17 years. There has been a dramatic increase in the brazeness of criminals and fearfulness of the public due to the gun-play. However, one can easily decipher that there has been no dramatic increase in the murder rate, it has held steady. We should all hope that the numbers go on a downward trend in 2018 and beyond. If you want an analysis on how people were murdered, please go and do the research or maybe the LW can do the research themselves. I am a working, studying and have family and friends. I’m too busy.

    Happy New Year David and Bloggers (Fair and Bias).

    David it is my duty as a citizen to post a roll of sewage that took place on the highway by Banks/Coke junction. A white car pull out from Bannatyne junction going east and driving at a brisk speed when all of a sudden this Land Rover Jeep (P3059) rush up behind this car and pull on the carriage way and pass the car at high speed. I don’t know how the car driver was able to keep the car from hitting me and other cars travelling westward and yet, being able to control the car from hitting the stupid driver who past on the left side. That was pure ROAD RAGE for no apparent reason.

    Having statistics on motives for murder is important .The government can then fashioned solutions around this data. Eg, if a significant number of murders are committed due to domestic violence, then a targeted programme involving counselling, stress mgmt, conflict resolution and mental heath would be essential.

    Economic growth and development comes with violent crime. Especially, if such growth is unequal and non-inclusive. Caribbean nations are some of the most economically unequal in the world.The only other country that comes to mind outside the broader caribbean and latin america region that mirrors this link of high crime rate and development is South Africa.

    South Africa is the most industrialised country on the continent and very unequal. It comes as no surprise therefore, that it has the highest murder rate in Africa. Not even Nigeria, with all its problems, murdered as much of its citizens as South Africa.

    Our politicians, media, academics and blogs never talk about wealth redistribution. In fact I once mentioned this to one politician and he laughed. “No man, we don’t need that,” he said.
    Sinckler has passed more wealth from the poor to the rich than Trump and not a word has been said. I have said before, and I say again, this is Plato’s allegory of the cave all over again. A people not informed, but not knowing they are not informed.

    One statistic says it all!!

    More than half of those murdered were under 35 and male …. actually that is two!!

    Chopped, shot or stabbed!!!

    That’s three more statistics.

    So, most of those murdered were young males who were either chopped, shot or stabbed.

    Motive behind the murder ….. let’s see if we can guess … all jilted lovers!!!

    @Hal. Yep, sadly indeed . It is not polite conversation to advocate for wealth redistribution. You are automatically labeled a commie. Yet they have no qualms or see nothing wrong with a tiny few having wealth equivalent to the bottom 60%. This is the absurd economic system we live in today.
