Note the timing. Harper apologised to certain indigenous people, but omitted a group in a geographical area, not deemed to be “Canada” at the time the indiscretions were committed. Trudeau, then extends the apology to ‘include those previously omitted’. This has been the Nova Scotian African canadian issue for a long time, at the time Canada didn’t exist. Canada was created in 1876. It was Americans from the New England states who came over and brought their slaves with them. And this occurred under the Nova Scotia provincial banner.
Hence this is called ‘seize the moment’. For the federal government has previously said, take your issues to the Nova Scotian government. Getting minimal traction, Trudeau’s latest apology, opens the door for the African Canadian community is NS to “try him on for size”.
