The following document was received in the BU inbox which promotes the view that Mara Thompson will NOT  be contesting the St. John seat at the next general election. What is surprising is the suggestion that Stephen Lashley is looking to jump the Christ Church West Central ship?

Caswell; Re. your 8:52 pm post

I have a different take on the email letter and the post here.

The extract I posted was simply a momentary, involuntary lapse by RADICAL!

RADICAL had set up the post with the grammatical errors to strongly suggest that the author was somewhat illiterate. It was designed to bring exculpatory information re. the letter to the table without linking Stephen Lashley to it.

But I think it is possible that the real Stephen Lashley might have also written the email message that is the subject of this blog to the Freundal Stuart character. That letter is of the style and grammatical content that one might expect of a lawyer. The RADICAL post would then be merely an attempt to extricate Stephen Lashley from the consequences of exposure of the leaked email by providing some oblique evidence that the emailed letter was faked.

It might be of some interest, if RADICAL is not a new poster, for David to identify some of his previous posts and let the BU family compare his writings in style, subject matter and content with the writing on this blog. eg.; Are the topics he addresses related to ones which Stephen Lashley might be expected to champion?

The above is primarily conjecture, but imho, is no more unlikely than what appears to be the consensus position on this blog that the original email at the chapeau is fake info produced by the BLP propaganda press.

  2. If Minister Lashley has denied being author of the alleged email to Stuart, we have to take him at his word.

  3. No WWC this Antigua situation is NOT an example for any Bajan or other government to follow.

Why do we jump off like half baked loaves of Purity bread taken from a badly heated oven…that poorly cooked dough is bad for our physical constitution just as poorly adjudged facts of this matter are terribly detrimental to the constitutional interplay between nation’s.

That PM Browne would act so swiftly against a colleague not proven guilty of anything suggests that this minister is either a backroom rival or there is some other subterfuge afoot.

This is real news but your reaction is indicative of the power and pain of this modern instant propagation of a news item or a spurious email to scandalous proportions with no careful analysis. That surely gives meaning to the “fake news” moniker .

    @ de pedantic Dribbler

I agree with your comments relative to Gaston Browne acting “swiftly against a colleague not guilty of anything……….”

Firstly, if the newspaper quoted Browne correctly re: he had “NO FIRM DETAILS OF THE REASONS for Mr. Michael’s arrest,” but “the arrest itself is sufficient for me to revoke immediately his appointment as a cabinet member………”

Added to the fact that “Michael is NO LONGER BEING DETAINED,” Browne has essentially presumed Michael is GUILTY until proven innocent.

Pedant…of course you will jump out to say not…the people deserve transparency, the PM of Antigua is giving his people transparency…he is not covering it up as you would like….they do not cover up these things in Canada and if they do and it’s found out…..it’s exposed…modern societies does not cover up these things…and you cant complain.

The journalists in Antigua are doing their jobs…unlike in Barbados where they are not allowed to….in modern societies real journalists do they jobs…they do not cover up fir ministers of government as you are accustomed to in Barbados….Canadian journalists do their jobs…or we would never knoe that the ministers in Barbados were doing business with the criminal Del Mastro and others.

…..and you can’t complain when journalists in Canada do their jobs…either….why when it’s to follow something positive, the negro male always fights against it, with your cursed selves….ya dont complain when it’s to copy the negatives that destroys ya people’s lives….ever.

In accordance with the time-honoured traditions of the Westminster System, at the first hint of impropriety the minister should have resigned. Prime Minister Browne did the right thing. If and when his name is cleared then and only then should he be allowed to return to the Cabinet.

If such a thing had happened in Barbados, most likely the PM would have advised him to get a lawyer.

    Sent from my iPad

  12. Really Caswell. The rift on PM Stuart probable call to get a lawyer is well placed and drole and all that but your note that PM Browne acted so right at this first hint of impropriety is amusing to say the least.

Many instances abound across the Westminster system where hints of impropriety whaffed to stinking fragrances before action was taken.

Mr Browne’s action speaks to untold info. This mortal is full and he likely has background info from his high commissioner or otherwise of what helped filled it up

I find it very hard to believe that you would not raise he’ll and high water if one of your client members was dismissed from his or her post based simply on an arrest and release with no charges laid. Yet this political grandstanding is OK, eh!

  13. This MORTAR…NOT mortal

  14. @ Dribbles
It is one thing to have due process and to ‘presume innocence until proven guilty’ for ordinary citizens such as Caswell’s clients.
It is an altogether DIFFERENT matter for persons who are placed in positions of GREAT authority when they do shiite.

    Caswell is right.

Surely you must know that the British police would hardly arrest a minister of a commonwealth government without SERIOUS evidence …that they will NOT share in public until following all the diplomatic channels

That they are DUTY BOUND to share their charges with the home government (PM), who would be constrained to act decisively – unless he was an idiot to refer to ‘getting a lawyer’.

You jump in too fast sometimes….

  15. @ Caswell
It was OBVIOUS that that letter did not come from Lil Hitler.

It would have had on a big fancy letterhead, with his picture on it, with MP, LLB, LEC, and all kinda things embellishing it ….to reaffirm the fact that the man is a legend in his own mind.

thats the thing about Pedant…he is always waiting in the shadows in stealth to jump out to contradict…..me.

he knows nothing about Asot Michael other than he is minister of tourism of Antigua and Barbuda which gives him access to a diplomatic passport and i would bet a dime, he did not read up on his background.either..

Browne can be quick to react, but he made sure to say he was within his powers as pm to do so in this case, which means he or his lawyers know the protocols better than Pedant…and he would have to be an idiot to revoke cabinet privileges without knowing them…

…if anyone cared to they would note that Michael was released, not with an apology, but a warning..by London Met Police, who would have to be even bigger idiots than Browne to haul in a minister just so and even if it was a case of mistaken identity….not apologize.

there are several scenarios playing out across the region and around the globe that many are watching, so innocent or guilty, many names are likely to get caught up.

a diplomatic passport is a diplomatic passport, it carries weight and if he was arrested wrongfully, he can seek relief…he was intransit.

…..Mystery still surrounds the arrest, questioning and then freeing by the London Metropolitan Police of Antigua Tourism and Development Minister Asot Michael after he arrived in the UK on his way to a conference in France.

He was arrested Monday morning immediately after his British Airways flight landed at London’s Gatwick Airport and then questioned for several hours before being released. As is routine in such matters, a suspect has to be charged before pertinent information of the arrest is released. There also is no word whether Michael will be allowed to leave the UK.

Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who is also away on government business, revoked Michael’s appointment as Minister of Tourism, Investment and Energy after the arrest was reported, subject to the outcome of the investigation. But there’s also a question if such an action will remove his diplomatic immunity making him open to re-arrest if the UK police decide on such action.

An emergency Cabinet meeting lead by Acting Prime Minister Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin was called in reaction to the news of Michael’s arrest.

Although there has also been no official word on the reason for Michael’s arrest there are suggestions that it is in connection to UK investor Peter Virdee, who himself was arrested for tax evasion in January….

    lol….too funny..hahaha

……A British businessman known as “Batman” is facing extradition to Germany and a possible 15-year prison sentence for alleged fraud and evasion of €125m (£109m) in VAT.

Peter Singh Virdee was arrested at Heathrow airport on Tuesday evening on a European arrest warrant, the Metropolitan police confirmed on Friday.

Prosecutors in Germany allege Mr Virdee was one of the “central organisers” of a criminal enterprise to defraud the authorities of VAT on carbon credits under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

The 43-year-old businessman operated “in the background” and took pains to conceal his identity, prosecutors claim.

He was allegedly known to other members of the group behind the fraud only as “Batman”.

“Peter Singh Virdee, 43, a UK national, was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Extradition Unit on Tuesday, 10 January at Heathrow Airport,” a Metropolitan Police spokesman said on Friday.

“He was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant on behalf of the authorities in Germany, where he is wanted in relation to tax evasion.”

Mr Virdee appeared before Westminster Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was released on bail. According to unconfirmed German press reports, he was ordered to pay £150,000 in bail.

The German authorities have formally requested his extradition. Mr Virdee is accused of operating a so-called “VAT carousel” scheme on EU carbon credits, under which traders export the credits from one member state to another in order to take advantage of EU VAT rules.

As exports, the sales are exempt from VAT, but the traders charge their customers VAT which they never declare to the authorities.

The scheme ran from 2008 to 2012. Prosecutors in the German city of Frankfurt have pursuing the case for several years, but this is the first time Mr Virdee has been named in connection with the case.

If found guilty, Mr Virdee could face up to 15 years in prison, Alexander Badle, a spokesman for the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office said.

“An international arrest warrant was issued against the accused on October 4,” Mr Badle said. “After intensive investigation by the Federal Criminal Police, the suspect was finally arrested on January 10 in Terminal 4 of London Heathrow airport after arriving on a flight from Abu Dhabi.”

Under German law, prosecutors are not allowed to identify suspects by name.

Originally from Birmingham, Mr Virdee is the founder of B&S Property, which claims to have more than £4bn in global assets. The company is registered at an address in Mayfair, along with the the Peter Virdee Foundation, which describes itself as a philanthropic organisation.

The German prosecutors allege he has extensive contacts abroad, esepcially in India, Pakistan, Dubai (UAE), Antigua, and St. Kitts and Nevis.

In a recent posting on Twitter, Mr Virdee is seen posing with Alex Salmond, the former SNP leader. He claims to have unveiled the UK’s first Sikh Memorial to the First World War, and to be the first Sikh patron of the English National Opera.

He was profiled in the Evening Standard in 2008 as one of London’s rising property stars.

So far, 13 people have been convicted in Germany over the case and received sentences ranging from 2 years and 9 months to 8 years in prison.

A lawyer for Mr Virdee said he categorically denies the allegations, and that he has never been involved in carbon trading. He is expected to challenge the extradition. …..

  21. I see no contradiction between Artax’s post and the dpD one……both have expressed concern about the haste of Gaston to distance himself from a colleague who is in custody without proof of guilt of any crime.

Hmmmmmmm……….. “who the cap fits, let him wear it.” And judging from the usual multiple responses, it appears as though the cap was a “perfect fit.”

So…. …. we interpret getting “it off an Antigua news feed” as the “epitome of blogging” or getting a “breaking news” scoop first.

I used to live and work in Antigua and I subscribe to Antiguan on-line newspapers. My Antiguan friends told me about the development with Michael before it was in the Antiguan media.

However, I did not find it NECESSARY to MENTION it on BU, because it DOES NOT have anything to do with the topic nor does it MERIT ANY PROLONGED “DISCUSSION.”

I do not read “Naked Departure,” but mentioning it was due to the fact the “professional blogger” ALWAYS REFER to that forum.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/personal-information-new-laws-uk-home-office-power-migrants-immigration-control-brexit-government-a8017326.html

“New laws will give the Home Office the power to snoop on the personal data of millions of people for “immigration control”, campaigners are warning.

A little-noticed clause smuggled into data protection legislation creates an exemption to privacy rights for immigration investigations.

The civil rights group Liberty has condemned the threat of “two-tier, racially discriminatory” rules – demanding that Parliament overturn the move.

Theresa May’s ‘British Dream’ once included child immigration checks
Without a fightback, millions of migrants could have their personal information “corrected or erased” without knowing “who is processing their data, which data is being processed and why”, it warned.

And the exemption is so broad that it could affect “volunteers running night shelters or food banks, or British citizens trying to access health services or education”.

Liberty suggested it had been inserted to allow the Home Office to more closely monitor EU nationals granted residency rights after Brexit.

Martha Spurrier, the group’s director, said: “Even from a Government with a track record of fostering division and sanctioning discrimination, this is a particularly brazen expression of how low they will go to bring border control into our everyday lives, no matter the cost.

“The Government can’t be allowed to sneak this nakedly racist provision onto our law books. We urge the Lords to take it out of the bill.”

And Satbir Singh, the chief executive of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, said: “Why should migrants be denied the right to have their information processed lawfully, fairly and transparently?

Why not make your contribution to the ‘Issues’ under discussion and forget about the ad hominem reference(s) at which you seem to be rather adept?

Who are you to judge? Only a wise man playing the role of a fool can judge a fool? Are you that fool?

Didn’t your friend Jesus tolerate all sorts including traitors and even had the compassion to forgive a criminal next to him on his cross of death?

“Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.”
