John Cumberbatch, the late president of the Barbados Union of Teachers, often described the Common Examination as elitist. He was convinced that once it remained the gold standard of excellence, the system would eventually be the main cause for several societal problems. It was a position he took before the mid-seventies, when he was leader of the BUT. Forty years later, his predictions have come to pass and we are still refusing to accept that he and others who supported this view were correct.

What is most unfortunate is that many of those teachers who were exposed to John’s views, embraced them but we now find them four decades later, in powerful positions, denouncing his positions and shamelessly defending the status quo. These former “Comrades” have sold their souls on the altar of political expediency and one often wonders, if they have collectively agreed to hold fast to the mantra: “if you can’t beat them join them”. They are to be found in both government and opposition. The classical case of pigs now walking on their hind legs and behaving like the masters, in Animal Farm.

Those voices crying in the wilderness for a radical reform of the education system, are to be commended but once parents believe that their children, can enter Harrison or Queens College, the task to change the system becomes more difficult. If many of those parents knew that some children enter the examination room, barely having the ability to recognize their names, they would perhaps be more supportive.

Any country that deliberately throws hundreds of its children in a socio-economic river while gleefully celebrating the achievements of a few, is certainly guilty of a form of societal genocide. The current rise in crime and the escalating disregard for life or limb by some of our youth, are certain signs of the full growth of seeds that were planted at least four decades ago. Our social scientists, have bluntly refused to utilize their knowledge to show or explain how the education system, is fertile breeding ground, for much of the deviancy that is now permeating the society.

Some moderators who chased callers off their programs, when they tried to explain that the education system was a great contributor, to many of our problems, are heard these days crying crocodile tears because they are facing the frightening reality, that if we refuse to rescue our youth from the path of drugs and crime, they would be no longer safe in their comfortable heights and terraces. It means that their desire to now embrace what they formally dismissed as “fringe elements”, is perhaps guided by ulterior motives.

Any form of elitism breeds disaffection and is immediately followed by hopelessness. We cannot restructure the economy without education reform. It is impossible to produce a 2017 model car on a 1950 production line. Our people remain our most precious resource, and that resource must be carefully nurtured for national development. It is not too late but time is running out.

    i am not blaming anybody.

I am making a factual statement.

    Country person here.

if you take the cream off the top of the milk then you are left with skimmed milk.

Generations of Barbados scholars and exhibitioners have left us. We have been left with skimmed milk. And we expect to build a fat rich society with skimmed milk?

I don’t think that we have a single Barbados scholar or exhibitioner in Cabinet, or in Parliament, or as a head of any government department, or as a permanent secretary, or as the head of any tertiary institution, or as the head of any hospital, or sitting on the governing body of any nursery, primary, or secondary school, of sitting as a judge or as a police commissioner, or as head of the prison service, or as governor general

Please somebody correct me if I am wrong.

Imagine a Barbados where Barbados scholars or exhibitioners sat in Cabinet, and in Parliament, and as a head of all government departments, and as a permanent secretaries, and as the head of all tertiary institutions, and as the head of all hospitals, and sitting on the governing bodies of all nursery, primary, and secondary schools, sitting as judges and as police commissioners, and as head of the prison service, and as governor general.

    Imagine.

Don’t blame Barbados for Stephen’s death. You know don’t you that his mother did not live long enough to raise him to adulthood, that she died when he was yet a child and that his stepmother raised him.

    Methinks.

    Genetics.

  3. Imagine if you were REQUIRED to be a Barbados scholar to sit in Cabinet.

It did not help that Owen hounded Alleyne to death either.

Simple…politicians should be scholars to sit in parliament, but Thompson was one …too smart for his own damn good…

…and Mia is one, the kind of things and people she gets involved in, she really should know and can do a hell of a lot better……

All the other riffraff were scraped from the bottom of the barrel by Thompson…and bajans are now stuck with them until next year.

……so it can be attributed to the political nastiness that abounds and passes for politics…a dirty game as long as those playing it are dishonest and lack class and integrity..

Obama must be one of the few politicians with high levels if intelligence and no nastiness and scandal to his name…

    Two points…:
….there is his sister, his female cousin, his daughter, raised in the same community by the same parents, went to the same schools and they are not engaged in deviancy, none have been arrested and charged with murder this year, nor last year nor the year before? None have been arrested in for trafficking any major quantity of drugs, nor for guns, nor for nor for arson? Can some of the men on this blog explain why?

Really good men do great things…

  9. While it is true that many scholars do not return or enter politics because of what they consider to be inferior persons in charge, there is also some reluctance to be beholden to the dominant black upper middle class that has emerged since independence.
Those born on the wrong side of the tracks would have experienced rampant classism and therefore opt for the anonymity that other countries offer. They seriously believe that to return to Bim , to confront the classism from within their own people coupled with the racism from the traditional white sector, is too much of a challenge and a waste of their time and the education that the taxpayers underwrote from primary to University level.
Another point that we should not over look, is that some of the island scholars of late are the offspring of at least one parent who was also an island scholar and they would have grown up in very solid intellectual upper middle class homes, so they would have been a different class from their parents who had won a Barbados scholarship while they were relatively poor.
We should note that relatively speaking a considerable number of whites and other minorities have also been scholars but we do not expect them to enter politics or the public service because they do not find such activity attractive or necessary to their social and economic well being.
It is also interesting to note that there is now a notable increase in private primary schools and the fees will automatically ensure that most of the children will be from high income homes. Perhaps if our social scientists were alert or less selfish , they may be able to connect the dots. In the most recent Sunday Sun, I read where the roll of the Metropolitan High School has dropped from a high of over 800 to no more than 30 students. While practically all of the Black owned high schools are basically out of business, we should pay very close attention to the ownership of all the new private schools that are emerging.
Sooner or later, we are going to have to confront several issues that we have swept under the carpet.
No amount of useless political nit picking is going to solve any of the problems we now have to confront.

For such a tiny island, destructive classism is too much of a deciding factor in identifying people, not even the racist US has that much classism..

Of course scholars who possess a higher level of knowledge, once exposed to the international arena….than the average person on the street, will see the constant decades old classism and racism practiced by dumb people and enabled by even dumber governments, that can be attributed to condensed ignorance and backwardness of island people…… as counterproductive to any future progress and development….no one wants to live like that in a constant pit of stupidity and stagnation.

Look how well it’s working out now after being practiced for decades on the island ..everyone seems to be an idiot, corrupt and criminals…..because of and despite the fantasy of classism.

And just thinking of interacting with a bunch of semiliterate racist bajan whites and others in the minority population, who control black government ministers and politicians with bribery and corruption and who, given their decades of criminal activities against the majority population on the island…….could only be described as repulsive to any scholar.

Previous black scholars made that mistake of returning to work for little racist companies like the then BS&T….. in the 70s and 80s and regretted it for the balance of their lives.

No one would want to be associated with those particular fools to become tainted and stagnant.

You hit the nail on the head, past all of the ‘should scholars return’ talk.

With all of the evident corruption and ‘know a man’ way in Bim, who in their right mind with a degree from MIT, McGill, Oxford, Cambridge or London, is going to come back here to work for some JA or as a consultant dealing with JA’s? When with degrees from those places they can get offers of $$$$ overseas?

Those days are done. The ones who came back before, even those who studied abroad and were not Bdos scholars, who will have opportunities abroad, will have learnt their lesson and twenty / thirty years ago was a different time.

Things have become worse while people have become more street smart, especially the youth.

You can wish all you want, but we now will see a brain drain en masse.

Anyone with an overseas degree will not come back.

The conversation needs to be ‘how can we stop the brain drain’ and the answer must begin with ‘we need to stop corruption first’.

Sadly, I do not see that happening. Which is why I have already said in other posts on this blog, to the young people, to get qualified and get out.

Why should a bright young person with potential stop here to be subject to the whims and fancy of a corrupt lot?

Like it or lump it, that is the way it is.

  13. @ William
Your analysis is largely correct. However you must have noted in thinking about the matter, that the whole focus of these ‘scholars’ is about their own selfish desires and convenience.
This is what Bushie calls albino-centric thinking, and it is THE root cause of our (and this current world’s) demise.

If the talented, bright, blessed (with state funding) scholars are ONLY thinking about their own interests and well being, …pray tell us what the dim, slow, intellectually-challenged, and exploited (with the taxes to fund these scholars) average BBBB is supposed to do…?

Not sell Ganja where he can make thousands instead of waiting on welfare?
Not run a ZR in a manner that best suits HIS objectives..?
Not litter, piss all over the place, look unkempt and behave waxy?
Not rob tourists whenever it suits his fancy?

Societies that do well produce citizens that feel a COMMITMENT to contribute to their family, friends, community, country …. and world. They do this by inculcating a culture with a COMMUNITY CENTRIC focus.
This way, not only Scholars, but even the lowest strata of citizens are driven to do what they can ‘for the country’.

This is a MOST CRITICAL role of any education system….. a role that is COMPLETELY missing in Barbados – with the consequences that we are seeing.

  14. Bush Tea September 18, 2017 at 8:15 AM #

You can make that assertion, but what draw is there when there is so much embedded corruption?

Or are you alleging a chicken and egg scenario, which came first?

FYI, there have been such scholars who returned and sacrificed of their time and lives. Some research is needed, but they were there. Not quite recognized for their contributions. And the corruption and decadence still prevailed despite their efforts.

Hence why the young ones know better.

You all can talk about the altruistic motivations, but what sense does that make in a mire of despotism?

  15. I read where the roll of the Metropolitan High School has dropped from a high of over 800 to no more than 30 students. While practically all of the Black owned high schools are basically out of business, we should pay very close attention to the ownership of all the new private schools that are emerging.

This is not a good example. The education system has moved passed the Metropolitan School model i.e. the Black owners like Cox, Prescod and the lot have not been innovative enough to tweak the business model. In the past they existed based on the subsidy from the MoE anyway.

WW, casting the dispersion that all Bajan whites are semi literate is ridiculous. Most of the Scholarships in my era of the mid 70s were won by whites and those that are very close to white ie most foreigners would not know the difference. The darker gents mostly came from professional homes although some were from very poor origins eg dad sold oranges on the wharf.
AS I have stated before the truth on bribery is that it was and is EXTORTION. “U want this Govt contract then place 10%commission in my/ our Cayman AcctS” So even I lay off 123 workers or I play ball. Obviously I want to retain my workers for continuity, cashflow etc how much choice do I have???? No matter what the morals/ ethics are what should I tell my workers and their families approx 5-600 human lives plus those they do business with like shops?

BS&T was always a large unwieldly organisation that did employ some whites who were well connected / protected and far from swift. I was amazed when some Bajans did not want it sold to a Trini Corp with a senior executive who was obviously Afro Trini. Who could afford to buy it in Bim? Why not take the cash from Trin and redeploy in developing smaller better managed Corps for the future? Who stopped Bajans from buying shares on the market for donkeys years?

As my former school friend of African lines says,”stocks / investments dont know or care that I am Black.”

  17. The scholars that return to Bim tend to be Lawyers, CAs, Doctors mostly. Scientists some of who are Profs at top Unis in the USA/ Canada/ UK/ Aus are far too advanced and would stagnate in Bim eg Prof at UWI that I know is always crying about inferior Lab equipment etc whereas our friend in the exact same field at MIT has the latest most advanced Labs.

Computer scientist may try Bim for a few years but quickly realise they are far better off in the large countries.

Who wants to become a victim of corrupt Politicians as several of my pals with PhDs have?

Some are literally banned from Govt jobs!!!!!!! “U doan want to LIE fuh we den tek dis nuh!”

    FACT!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The greatest draw of all Boss…
To come and clean up the shiite that is stinking up THEIR family, friends, communities and country.

If our brightest and best – who we nurtured, and in whom we invested scarce resources – are unwilling (or God forbid) unable, to deal with corruption in high places, what can you HONESTLY expect from the current union leaders – for example..?….or from the pissy press (who all seem to be consumed in sex scandals with their editors) … or the third rate clergy…
… or even stinking Bushie (who barely passed the 11+…)?

Bushie respects Caswell for HIS selfless commitment to justice and truth.
BUT Caswell did not benefit from elaborate resources, exposure and training that comes with scholarships….and would be lost among the stinking lawyers of Barbados.
This is why Caswell does not have the SELF CONFIDENCE to fully exploit the VALUABLE talents that he possess. For lack of this TECHNICAL and SOCIAL self-confidence, WE are unable to benefit from his invaluable ethical, moral and social excellence.

Take a fella like Georgie Porgie.
He has the needed self-confidence and attitude to make a contribution, but he is to damn arrogant.
Jeff has the intellect, social and ethical grounding, and the self-confidence, but has been ethically and spiritually compromised by his legal groundings.
Walter is a strong candidate, but, like his pal David Thompson, sees himself as too much as a needed saviour rather than a willing SERVANT of the people…. and easily falls into albino-centric traps…

To whom much is given, much is expected.
This saying is more applicable to this situation than anywhere else…

Same goes for the ministers and politicians who accept bribes from the semiliterate minorities, commit crimes and tief taxpayer’s and presioners money…would you call them genuises and brilliant intellectuals and scholars also….

…MoneyB…look. dont get me started…lol….and stop acting like they are innocent, none of them are, they should have exposed the “extortion”….to british, US, UK and other media from the get go…if they were clean and not corrupt criminals themselves…

…… with the digital age they could tape everyone of those corrupt ministers and politicians, but have any of the minorities done so…no, instead they colluded with the same extortionists and the bribed ministers and pokiticians to remove social media so their corruption and bribery never becomes public knowledge. …that’s why their names have all ended up in some international agencies….all who were involved.

….they too deserve time in prison.., and when these ministers are taken down for their crimes, I hope they at least have the commonsense to take all of the minority criminals in the business community down with them….call all their names…..everyone of them..

“Who stopped Bajans from buying shares on the market for donkeys years?”

As a matter of fact, I understand it was by design and conspiracy by Fields and others to prevent the majority population from buying shares in the company.., and dont be surprised if there was political help from lowlife black ministers to prevent their own people from owning the company,

BUT…BS&T was manipulated by whites specifically to keep talented blacks ‘in their places’. Same exact thing with Mutual, BL&P, Banks etc.
These were eventually sold off to foreigners when it became clear to all that Blacks were becoming unstoppable. In most cases, they were sold off below REAL value, with various “underhanded sihininagans” taking place to maximise benefits to the connected whites.

Don’t come here with that ‘Johnny-ish’ shiite about what blacks ‘should’ have done. Short of ISIS-type tactics, not much more could have been done when the albino devils has bribed the black leadership, the courts, the police – and when the lawyers are all honorary ‘whites’ in the systemic brass bowlery.

When Tom Adams imposed a ‘reparations-styled’ income tax to try to bring some BALANCE back to the society, you and others – who had exploited the masses for CENTURIES, packed up and moved to albino lands to avoid making contributions.

More the reason it should have been exposed from very early and shows beyond a doubt, how many minorities are involved in corrupting both governments for their own advancement.

Were it not for the blogs, this would go on for another 50 years because both governments and minorities…so no reason to end it are all on board and good with bribery and corruption and would keep passing it on from one generation in parliament and the business community…to the next generation of corrupted self serving criminals in parliament and the business community…

That is not prigress, it is destruction on an extremely large and evil scale.

All you are doing is reinforcing the need for TOP QUALITY people to deal with this mess….

Again you illustrate the stupidity of sucking and blowing simultaneously. If paying bribes is wrong why was my brother “not up to the task” by refusing to play? Abject stupidity by Bushie! Which Top Quality person is going to alert the FBI et al and risk floating face down in the Cbean Sea? Maybe with family? They were eating Bfast happily but some escapees from Dodds massacred the family, how sad!

Not if ya get them on international, criminal money laundering charges.., they dont stand a chance then…I will bet my last dollar that everyone of them are laundering money…big time.

The minorities did not try very hard to stop any bribery and corruption, they were too busy committing their own range of crimes and getting away with it…..against the people and country,

More the reason it should have been exposed from very early and shows beyond a doubt, how many minorities are involved in corrupting both governments for their own advancement.

U like a Lawyer–professional LIAR! EXTORTION is how it all started in Bim! Bribes are DEMANDED by a corrupt bunch of traitors!

Probably only one way to handle this–Benevolent Dictatorship! Nothing else will work as the next Govt will know of the sweeets of corruption and want a huge helping!

My immigration has proven to be quite BRILLIANT, now all I have to do is learn to live with the Corrupt White Bastards in Canada and NthAm.

“Poor people require help as I have stated relentlessly but NOT continuous give– aways without accountability and working on their development / progress. Discipline as in teach them to fish but dont just give dem fish for 50 yrs.”

But Bizzy “give me” and other minority parasites have no qualms about begging for taxpayer’s money, pension money, contracts and scam subsidies which belong to the same poor people, not to him or any other minority. .,they have no qualms about joining with tiefing ministers…to rob the same poor people..

The same briber Bizzy jumped in the newspapers to demand from his bribee ministers “give me BWA”…which belong to the poor people…..”and 60 million dollars”.., which again belong to the poor poople…..

Maybe the poor people should teach Bizzy and the other minority thieves and parasites….how to go fish…Instead of begging…, the poor.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    LOL
Your brother was not up to the task because Bushie is talking of a level of input that is able to DISLODGE and OVERTHROW corruption and bribery …. not just avoid it.

Average citizens are able to ‘avoid’ bribery. That take no great set of balls.
Top class scholars are those who are prepared to DIE in the process of rooting it out….
Top class scholars are able to CHANGE PARADIGMS…

    …add two and two… 🙂

The only way to handle this is to LOCK UP THE CRIMINAL MINORITIES AND THE CRIMINAL POLITICIANS AND MINISTERS…

why is that so hard fpr you to understand when that is how every other modern society handles it…what makes Barbados so different….

….Singapore executes corrupt government officials and business people, or gives them long stretches in prison, with a few lashes from a cane, since ya like that model.

Ya think minority criminals are too special to go to prison for their crimes, ya think international police will buy any of your lame excuses trying to justify bajan white tiefing, bribery, corruption and criminality because it benefits themm because they white or indian……dream on…, hope ya name dont get caught up,,,

…… it’s the only workable deterrent, international public shaming, humiliation and prison time.

  37. @William Skinner September 18, 2017 at 4:44 AM “We should note that relatively speaking a considerable number of whites and other minorities have also been scholars but we do not expect them to enter politics or the public service .”

But I do, and we should all expect “whites and other minorities have also been scholars to enter politics and the public service.” You have received a good nursery, primary, secondary and university education at the hands of, and at the pockets of the Barbadian people. We want you in. It is payback time.

If you have a good brain, we want you in–you too money brain–and your children.

  38. We want you back while you are still young and healthy and capable of good work. We welcome you to retire here. BUT retiring to Barbados is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

We want you while you are still young and healthy and capable of good work.

We know that bad coin drives out good. But we need our scholars to fight back. Do not give up your right to serve, and leave us to the mercies of unmerciful mediocre people.

  40. @Crusoe September 18, 2017 at 8:24 AM “You all can talk about the altruistic motivations”

    Altruism is ALWAYS good.

Why do you think that I have donated 60 units of blood? Do you think that I got paid? Or expected pay? Or needed surgery myself? Or had family with a chronic illness who needed blood?

    No. Altruism.

We must inculcate altruism in our children and in our children’s children. And in our Barbados scholars and exhibitioners. We have not done so, and that is our failing.

  41. @Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger. September 18, 2017 at 7:39 AM “Seriously as a scholar, could you see yourself demeaning and degrading yaself in the process

One CANNOT demean, degrade or diminish oneself by service to one’s people and/or ones country.

It is alright for you to stay overseas and shout and curse and abuse those of us who remained, or you returned while we were still young and able. But what have YOU done, besides shout and abuse and curse? If there is a fire and you do nothing but shout fire, fire, and you refuse to pour water on the fire how does that help?

    When will you DO something?

When will you DO something which adds value to Barbados?

Simple and Bushman…make it your personal business to lock up all your criminal minorities and criminal politicians and ministers and you will see the island’s scholars enter politics and every area of government in droves, but yall have to get rid of ya blighted criminals first.

Do you see to what lengths the South African majority are going to get rid of the corrupt Zuma and those minorities whom he enables…., well start there…KPMG executives just got taken down for colluding, Bollinger of UK got taken down for creating mischief and destruction for black South Africans….and these are giants, not the little pissant nobodies ya have on the island who no one in the large countries have ever heard about, outside of some petty criminal activity or tiefing from poor people…..yall act like thiefjng minorities and tiefing government ministers got special powers…well they dont and can be taken to hell down just like everyone else..

And if ya will claim that ya cant get rid of your criminals in parliament and in the business community and you are the ones living there…..why subject scholars who dont need to live there, to that type of challenge if you yourselves are not up to the task.

Yall can’t expect not to get up and protest and fight…, but expect to get rid of those criminals, do something, no one else can do it but you…, call RCMP…INTERPOL…FBI…SCOTLAND YARD…if you have to, if you are pushed and give the information…

…many black bajans who complain the loudest about minorities and wicked corrupt ministers are the ones who keep their darkest deepest secrets for them that can lock them all up….maybe it’s time for those deepest, darkest, secrets to be revealed, if ya want to free yaselves from criminals.

Besides. ..the scholars who are intelligent enough to stay away until the implosion comes, are not the ones negatively impacted by the crimes of minorities and ministers/politicians…..but yall are, so do something….quickly..

  43. To illustrate the point being made by Bushie and Simple Simon, let us take Peter Wickham. A second rate retard who goes around the place parading as a political guru and social scientist… as an example.

A fella who did not have the capacity to succeed – even at UWI, where jokers like Justin and others are seen as beacons – or even to excel at the 11+ stage …CAN NEVER have what it takes to bring needed CHANGE to political life in stinking Barbados as it currently is….
Shiite man… Wickham did not even have the balls to remain on BU when Bushie put the whacker in moderate gear ..and put some whacks in his retarded donkey.

Compare this with Money B, Jeff, Caswell and others, who clearly have at least the intestinal fortitude to stand up for their positions.

VERY FEW of us have the full package of skills and talents that are needed to bring the needed change. Among the scholars, Bushie hazards that probably ‘one-in-a-hundred’ comes close…. among the ordinary population, the figure is more like ‘one-in-a-hundred-thousand’ …. NONE of those in our current parliament is that ‘one’…

What is even WORSE now, is that in more recent times, the situation has deteriorated to the point where EVEN those who may be blessed with the needed human and technical qualities will FAIL to bring the needed change – UNLESS they are FULLY equipped to counter the SERIOUS DARK SPIRITUAL forces that have come on stream in our world….

The situation is dire, and worsening…. Without our VERY BEST AND BRIGHTEST leading the way, we may as well ALL give up and concentrate on wuk-up and wine and women…

….cause they are not asking South Africans who live outside of South Africa to do it for them, they are doing it themselves….

…..too many bajans have enabled the corruption over the decades, yardfowls and others who get crumbs or pats on the heads or menial jobs for being good little negros…..who would you like to get in the middle of that….surely not the scholars or those who returned more than once and got burned each time…

Not me, I never get burned, cause I make sure to find out where evahbody live.

BTW…how do you know I dont continually add something to the island, I am not one to run into the newspapers to make myself look good each time I give away a candy bar, like many I see do to get a photo op in the Nation or Barbadostoday,……

…..no one needs to know what you contribute, but the recipient… that is the spirit of giving.

You are right, of course. It took me 40+ years to find my way home but I have no intention of ever retiring… the work I was capable of 20 years ago can’t hold a candle to what I am capable of today, so don’t write of the grey haired brigade.

Simple…if ya think handling those criminals with kids gloves and calling them sweet fake honorable names and massaging their oversized egos will get them to stop committing crimes against you, your family and the majority population…, welll think again, that only gives them more incentives to victimize and brutalize the populstion while robbing everyone,…cause ya insist on giving them respect they never earned and certainly dont deserve.

They are all repulsive, both criminal ministers and criminal minorities….and telling them how good they are will not make them better….but will give you more fuel to complain….while people like myself will watch and smile because you choose to enable them as opposed to removing them, excising the cancers they have all become.
