There is no need to be prolix about the importance placed on local health authority to prevent liquid waste leaking onto our streets. It presents a health hazard to locals and visitors -bear in mind where Rendezvous is located.  It makes taxpayers question the managerial and financial ability and capacity to manage the sewerage infrastructure. It raises the issue of trust in local public officials who promised last year the problem of leaking waste on the South Coast was fixed when the BTII gave a broke Barbados Water Authority (BWA) 2 million dollars to repair the infrastructure.

The embedded image was captured within the last 24 hours at the start of a weekend that will see CARIFESTA reaching its ‘climax’. The leaking waste water and the unholy stench violating the atmosphere in the area of Rendezvous Post Office is a national embarrassment.

    The problem of sewer leakage will continue as human beings continue to pollute the water ways and overload the systems with items that cannot be degraded
    Contiunation of public awareness of the negative effects caused by human disposing of waste materials through the sewer lines would help in resolving this constant problem
    No sense in govt keep spending money to fix a problem which can be attributed to human lack of responsibility

    Just recently, the same incompetent Lowe left garbage piled up even in residental areas on the island for 2 whole weeks, just before, during and after cropover the stench of garbage surrounded people`s houses.

    Was this not the first case of black slaves actually winning their freedom in battle?

    I take it that the Bajans on this thread are unaware of the fact that the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, a city of 2 million people, does not have a sewerage system, and human waste is removed by hand.

    The workers who do this are called the ‘bayakou’.

    …..Prior to independence, St Dominique – the country that is now Haiti – was France’s most profitable colony, thanks in no small part to its particularly brutal system of slavery. In 1791, the slaves revolted, and in 1804, after defeating Napoleon’s armies, founded the world’s first black republic.

    Following Haiti’s independence, former French slave-owners submitted detailed tabulations of their losses to the French government, with line items for each of “their” slaves that had been “lost” with Haitian independence. In 1825, the French King, Charles X, demanded that Haiti pay an “independence debt” to compensate former colonists for the slaves who had won their freedom in the Haitian Revolution. With warships stationed along the Haitian coast backing up the French demand, France insisted that Haiti pay its former coloniser 150m gold francs – ten times the fledgling black nation’s total annual revenues.

    Under threat of a French military invasion that aimed at the re-enslavement of the population, the Haitian government had little choice but to agree to pay. Haiti’s government was also forced to finance the debt through loans from a single French bank, which capitalised on its monopoly by gauging Haiti with exorbitant interest rates and fees.

    The original sum of the indemnity was subsequently reduced, but Haiti still disbursed 90m gold francs to France. This second price the French exacted for the independence Haitians had won in battle was, even in 1825, not lawful. When the original indemnity was imposed by the French king, the slave trade was technically illegal; such a transaction – exchanging cash for human lives valued as slave labour – represented a gross violation of both French and international laws. And Haiti was still paying off this “independence debt” in 1947 – 140 years after the abolition of the slave trade and 85 years after the emancipation proclamation.

    A lawsuit launched by the Haitian government to recuperate these extorted funds was aborted prematurely in 2004, with the French-backed overthrow of the government that had had the temerity to point out that France “extorted this money from Haiti by force and… should give it back to us so that we can build primary schools, primary healthcare, water systems and roads”.

    my campaign to open the eyes of the black majority population on the island has been so successful….that discomfort has set in for those minorities who thought they could maintain a docile, black majority slave society on the island for another 50 years….to be able continue their criminal activities and self enrichment, without consequences.

    i could not do it alone however and those who contributed and who know who they are, must also be commended.

    Furthermore when some of the populace refuse to heed the call of illegal dumping in our gullies and canals it compounds the problem a problem which is worsened by actions atttibuted to human hands that no matter how much repair is done to the plant the blantant violations of illegal dumping exaggerates the problem

    He should be more concerned about putting his hand in and helping clean the sewage mess in Barbados….cause pretty soon, the new sewage systems currently being installed in Haiti will be more technologically advanced than anything Barbados has or could afford.

    I think this situation is very embarrassing although I can understand why its occurring. The South Coast sewerage plant was never built to facilitate rain water runoff. And this is having an adverse impact of the operations at the plant. I hope a permanent solution would come very soon.

    This post is about the mismanagement of the sewage system and the commenters allowed some idiot to sidetrack the discussion. Let’s get back to the issue at hand.

    We will never get the right persons in public service jobs as long as the politicians remain in control of the recruitment process. Whenever there is a vacancy anywhere in the public services of Barbados, the politicians make sure that their man or their woman get the job. In the Public Service proper, it does not matter if the person being employed does not possess the necessary skill or aptitude. In some cases, they have even changed the academic qualifications so that their man would get the job.

    At statutory boards the advertised academic qualifications do not matter since they can always be overturned by the relevant minister.

    These handpicked people then go on to make a mess of things as any square peg in a round hole would.

    The sewer plant was a disaster waiting to happen mostly likely because of its size and a low capacity levels being unable to handle large volumes of seweage in an area which is densely populated and having the type of business that are geared to a tourisim industry
