Prime Minister Freundel Stuart

โ€œThe tax haven Barbados is dying just now. The escape clauses in the offshore contracts are activated e.g. in the case of a downgrade to C, financial breakdown or revolution. No foreign investor will come to Barbados now to do any fresh offshore business, since a tax haven must offer financial security. There are multiple other island around with better rating, better policies, better prospect and a more motivated population.โ€ โ€“ Tron

In response to the recent umpteenth credit rating downgrade by Moody’s that quickly followed S&P Global Prime Minister Freundel Stuart was quick to break his accustomed silence to issue the following comment:-

โ€œWe seem now to be working ourselves back into a frame of mind where once again we want to sit exams for people outside of Barbados and wait on them to grade us and if they tell us we have passed we are supposed to feel good that we have passed, and when they tell us we have failed we are supposed to hold our heads in shame and think that we are failuresโ€

One understands with a general election on the horizon the prime minister wearing his other as leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) had to spin the bad news of the recent downgrades to some benefit. Bear in mind this is the leader of a country where our foreign reserves have dipped to ten weeks of imports cover and the government is forced to sell national assets to shore up the international reserves. This is a prime minister who heads a country where the foreign commercial banks have demonstrated little appetite for government securities. The point to be made is that the structure of our economy is dependent on the assessment of external players to perform. Does the prime minister not understand that the commercial banks in Barbados will implement credit and risk polices based on the ratings of the credit agencies? Does he not understand that the plummeting credit rating will make borrowing of foreign currency expensive IF we are even able to procure it? Why would he slam that door given our current economic state. Did the prime minister not observe how holders of Barbados bonds in the international market have reacted based on the Bloomberg report?

More important for BU and should be for the prime minster. What message is he sending at a time when the country should be in a serious mode of planning and productivity to ensure weย  work together to make Barbados great again? Why should a country whose economy is in such a perilous state where a Governor of a Central Bank whose second contract was renewed in 2014 resign days before the downgrades? How does prime minster Stuart feel so emboldened to disrespect foreign financial players who access the reports of the rating agencies as a routine pre condition for lending or investing in a country? Are we to assume the government is confident all of our foreign currency borrowing will be satisfied by concessionary lending from the Chinas of this world?

BU took note how quickly minister of Commerce Donville Inniss added that the recent downgrades would be upsetting to foreign investors. Is the prime minister an economic illiterate not to have realised that we are a country very dependent on foreign direct investment whose principals would want to be assured that there is manageable risk if they decide to do business in Barbados? The bottomline Mr. Prime Minister is that investors will avoid doing business with any country that have been assigned junk status by the big 3 credit rating agencies read Moodyโ€™s, S&P and Fitch.

We look forward to the outcome of the deliberations by the two committees of the social partnership who should be submitting recommendations soon to the prime minister. We now live in very uncertain times.

  2. Is Prime Minister Stuart competent? …. period?
Has PM Stuart EVER displayed competence in ANY endeavour in his life?
Has the man even managed a damn family? …a business? ….raised children? …played sports? …with any level of success?
GP spoke at length to this question from the very beginning of his assertion to the role.

Our PM is the arch-typical St Philip driver (with a cap) blocking the damn road while obstinately driving erratically at 5 mph …and apparently with all the effort that he can muster.

    The question is…
Is prime Minister Stuart competent to lead ANYTHING at ANYTIME?
Even Alvin would likely provide the correct answer to that question…..

    Tron / David;

    Oh shirt!

It’s even worse than I’d imagined since I wasn’t following the developments as closely as I should have. I could only see significant FDI losses and FX flight as direct results of this last downgrade but this clear consequence pointed out by Tron (I’ll have to look for the rest of his post) is inescapably true. So a whole plank of the economy is now actually dead, not just in danger, solely because of the brutal nature of the last downgrades added to the cumulative effects of the earlier ones.

    Pacha;

Even the guillotine won’t help us now!

  4. @Bush Tea March 12, 2017 at 9:25 PM “Has the man even managed a damn family…raised children?

    Aren’t those tasks women’s work?

I mean do Kings, Queens, Presidents or Prime Ministers ever get themselves involved with such mundane tasks?

  5. Truthfully among the upper class/political class such tasks have traditionally been farmed out to weekly paid workers of the servant class.

    Tell me if I lie?

  6. Leadership: A Definition. According to the idea of transformational leadership , an effective leader is a person who does the following: Creates an inspiring vision of the future. Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision.

The offshore industry is ring- fenced from the local economy so, a downgrade doesn’t affect them. As I write, millions of foreign currency is flowing in and out of Barbados in that industry on a daily basis.

Fruendel is in a class all by himself, his handsoff approach to governance, ignoring the majority population, only deigning to respond to yardfowls, or running to CNY to spill his guts to those nit negatively impacted by his inaction, or be seen with a shit eating grin surrounded by tourists whose company he enjoys only by spending and wastingntaxpayer’s dollars to do so, disconnected from the reality his incompetence and suffering causes the majority population….and his eagerness to remind the people that they do not need white people………once his own incompetence is exposed.

Truly one for the history books.

Following your comment can you reconcile the following?

Consider the political and economic stability of the jurisdiction. When choosing the best jurisdiction for your business needs, you want to choose a country that is both politically and economically stable. An unfavorable regime change or an economic crash could seriously disrupt your business and have a negative impact on your bottom line. A politically and economically stable jurisdiction helps ensure the security of your assets.

@ David. In theory that is correct. But the offshore financial industry have set up shops in all type of jurisdiction. Case in point, Panama offshore industry. It has survived years of political instability and bad press. Corresponding banking de-kisking, the OECD blacklist,
or tax efficiency are factors more of a threat to the industry than any credit downgrade.

A ticking time bomb, and there are only a few tics left, The Prime Ministers is a lawyer and like all lawyers if you are not dis barred you are deem to be competent even if you suck, and loss cases you needed to win,Holding a title does not mean you know what you are doing, Being Prime Ministers does not mean you are smart , but advisors must know what they are doing, It takes more than one head to rule for was all dont know all things, But even when the people around you are crooks, liars and scumbags only looking to cover up and deal in Fraud and Ponzi,Even if this was and it was handed to him by the BLP . Its not easy to handle someone else mess from Owen and Mia ,Now for the bomb to go off in your hands,
To know what you were handed and not seek to expose or fix it, To act like it never happen and now to see where we are now,
If as we can see and told here on BU that Clico was and is a POZI and people Chuse to look the other way and make fun , Then years after for TNT hearings to say that is was a PONZI now is a fact in TNT for it not to be a fact in Barbados also? CLICO is and was a POZNI in Barbados also and where is it now? For the same People that ran CLICO are the same people running Barbados in the same style , they do not have 2 ways of thingking proven by the courts and Audit,CLICO in Barbados kept alive by Prime Minister David and when he drop dead so did CLICO in the same very year and month,Two birds with one stone,

Barbados DLP took over from the long running crooks, liars and scumbags of the BLP Owen and Mia as AG, Who got the ball rolling very fast, As in the last election all the DLP had to do was say and report on the BLP what was on going and what they found in office at that time and let the people know, But the PONZI money was still coming a little longer and the DLP kept it going by covering up the truth also the ex CBG Williams knew what was going on also,

Yes I , Me , We spoke in front of her at town and Country while looking in the fraud records and removed records on land applications ,While she sat there with her face blank and silenced seem amazed that people can know what they were doing and not sitting at the table with them ,
it seems a few days or weeks later she left the CB and a new CBG showed up the one that just removed, Now there is a New top crook at the CB to print 155 million to start as the one before refuse to print 50 million, What a joke , so that means that we are in 3 time as must she-it than reported, what is the extra money for and who do we owe?

All was well predicted and know , but not to the People with brains, So where is MONEY BRAIN? now another over up on line that refuse or paid to say truth as with lawyers on line posting moving the people brains off topic when each leg of pain of fraud alerts are spoken of.

When the Topic of Barbados pops up we are the one that need to put the hammer down and beat it hard till its fixed with pressure, to take sides for party and not the nation say people just want to be on a winning side with a loooosing team.
The DLP nor the BLP have proven they can not tell the truth, they are not wiling to fix the crimes or wrong they have done, that they are quite happy to drag all down with them,

After they are both removed then the new Government will now have the chance to expose the Full and say the PONZI of CLiCO and the Massive Land Fraud that is on going, the fasle history book, the wrong education, false pride, The World is watching and knows what going on in Barbados,It now time for the People of Barbados to Wake up and see for self, Local News or False News reports and cover up had ran their course, Even CBC government ran is Broke, NationNews paper Broke , All pump up by printing money and buying the news for the results they want,
When People on BU will tell and admit to truth its will be a brighter day as till them More PAIN and MUCH more PAIN to come,
History Soon will show up the Massive Land fraud,That was feeding this so call Owen and Mia growth of Barbados in the Caribbean , all involved want to be dead when the Truth is told,,
More Down grades to Come ,what ever path Fools need to Wake up So be it, We already know, Clear Title land is the Key to Investment for returning Bajans and Investors ,

    Good Morning Barbados,

True, and there are also more crooked, more corrupt, worse governed, and more unstable. We can still hold our head high in this world. You may not like your mirror image, but I can shout from the highest building, I am Bajan, and I will survive. I will never pull down my family, myself, or my country. I will never join with those who try to denigrate me, my people, or my country. I am a proud Barbadian. Sorry for you; for your attitude shown a form if dissatisfaction with your own self, a lack of self confidence, and a degree of selfishness which in itself is responsible for the attitudes prevalent among those who wish ill for their own docuntry and people.Crawl back under a rock, and leave us to fight the battles. Your statement:”a more motivated population.” epitomizes what I have just said. You people have no motivation, no ambition, and no desire to help yourself. You want to always depend on someone else to provide for you. If you take some money and instead of buying a bottle of Brandy( I’ll bet you drink Brandy instead of locally produced rum), bought a few chickens to raise and produce eggs and meat you would be more motivated to be self sufficient.
Ah what the heck. You people are all the same; filled with the same self-loathing and dependency syndrome.

  15. Bimboy,
“an effective leader is a person who does the following: Creates an inspiring vision of the future. Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision.”

I have never been able to understand why people “Need” someone else to motivate them, or create a vision for them. We are born into this world alone, and will die alone. Why can’t we motivate ourselves. Somebody else can only give you their vision. You have to develop your own vision, and be motivated to reach your own star,on your own steam, and your own guidance.

The best comment you ever made Alvin…that is why no one with a modicum of self respect, intelligence or commonsense would degrade and belittle themselves or blight their own lives and that of their future generations by following politicians, government ministers or political parties…and definitely not a disaster and trainwreck waiting to happen…like the present government.

Everyone is better off being centrist…and looking out for themselves.

This is the result of electing leaders to public office who never managed an idea, a business let alone a law firm or anything else successfully……when you let them loose to manage a whole country you get incompetence, chaos and disaster….as the jackasses who elect them deserve.

  18. Well Well,
Again you are mistaken. You know nothing about me. I am here, among the people, taking in and experiencing everything. I know what I AM TALKING ABOUT WHEN I TALK. What unnecessary hardship you talking about. Every single car in the island is imported; using foreign exchange. Every store in Sky Mall is filled with imported goods, bought with foreign exchange. Every civil Servant, teacher, welfare worker, cook at the school meals service etc, is paid out of the money other persons pay in taxes etc. As I said above, and suggested, everybody van help themselves. Everyone can beg for a barrel cut it in half and grow some kind of food. Every Bajan overseas can sen back a hundred dollars to the country; in the form of a gift, scan investment or a savings bond, or otherwise. Everybody can do something; if they love their country, in some way. I contribute to the welfare of this country. Whenever I come back home, I book my passage through a Bajan Travel agency, and pay for it in Canadian Currency. All my spending is by withdrawal directly from my bank account in Canada. That is how I contribute. I am not, as you say, “refusing to leave the safety of Canada to stuggle and suffer in Barbados with ya fellow cajansโ€ฆ.”. I am among you, and even when I am in Toronto, I listen to the radio every day, discuss things Bajan with the guys in the Mall, and communicate with my people here. I however am not motivated to destroy. I am motivated to help and build up.
By the way, did you go on the March? Did you sing along with the calypsonian: “Captan the ship is sinking?” Of course you know when that was written, who it was written by, what was the motivation, and of course you will realize that the Trinidadian ship has not sunk, these many years after. The SS Trinidadian is still afloat, even hough crime has evolved at a much faster rate than the economy. Up to now, despite the “mutiny” or threats of mutiny, S.S. Bajan has still avoided the rocks that are put in its way.
We will survive. If I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, WE HAD THIS SAME TYPE OF DISCUSSION Way BACK IN 2013.

Alvin…importing cars does not mean wealth or a good economy…it means foreign exchange leakage allowed by the government, it means debt for those who purchase those cars, debt slavery….

…….some people have to choose between buying food and making car payments, have you checked recently for the high numbers of repos in Barbados, the high numbers of house repos and car repos, why are you lying to yourself…most people are one paycheck away from homelessness unless they move back home to live with parents, if they have any.

I know pf one person who owned multiple properties and they just lost 2….so ya are talking rubbish and like Fruendel…totally disconnected from reality on the ground, no surprise there.

How is it that Barbados’ Foreign reserves fell below 10 weeks coverage in 1998-1999 and there was no talk about devaluation of the Barbados dollar?
