The political temperature in the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) neck of the woods is starting to rise as it identifies candidates to run in the next general elections constitutionally due in 2018. It is not unusual for political parties to engage in tussles while negotiating the candidate selection process. Who can forget the dogfight that took place to replace then Henry Ford in Christ Church West and of recent the Maria Agard catfight that has seen the return of former representative William Duguid.

In the news recently veteran BLP candidate David Gill was defeated by rookie Marsha Caddle in St. Michael South Central. The result forced him to admit ”I done wid Mia”. In St. James South new comer Ronnie Yearwood appears to be the Mia anointed at the expense of BLP foot soldier Sandra Husbands. And there is St. Michael North West…

Clearly there is a BLP purge on the way and who can blame Mia? Why would she want Arthur’s disciples at her back?

The downside to the party system is that the democratic ideals to which its members aspire are often compromised in the interest of the leader of the party. Across the globe the party system has been failing. There is no better example than in the United States where the presidential race has been reduced to a reality show staring the greatest of them all Donald Trump and co star Hillary Clinton. The party system is located at the foundation of our democracy. It is scary to observe how those with influence are able to easily influence many who offer to serve.

The BU household is of the view the best representative of a constituency should be a person with an enviable track record of public service. And it should be considered an asset if said person was born and or raised in the constituency they have offered to represent.  How do we ring-fence the representative from those who are able to command limitless resources. Denis Lowe and  billionaire Peter Allard comes to mind.

An example of influence is the ease with which political aspirants have been able to secure contracts to propagate their agenda in the print and broadcast media.

The people have to be able to see through the politicians and what they stand for and recognize that when they present themselves as candidates for election, it has npthing to do with people or country. ….. but self enrichment using a small minority of what the ministers consider special interest groups.

As in the case of Barbados, the taxpayers always lose with these selfish arrangements.

  2. I recall vividly that man low taking a break from a clean up campaign on the beach at silver sands looking into the dlptv camera and lied to the people of Barbados in affirming that the proposed Cahil project will not cost the taxpayer of Barbados one blind cent.Low a lowlife for Kerr.Low a black lip swine.Low, a no effing good cocksutter.Ask Allard den.

  3. “An enviable track record of public service, ought not be the sole criterion Peice and not criteria for elected office”

The hope is that in addition to the enviable track record of public service, the person who chooses to represent the will of the constituents is qualified on both the moral and intellectual level as well.

History is a great example of individuals whose track record of public service are next to none, but after being elected allows the attitude of self-interest over the collective interest undermine the very reason their were sent to the epicenter of power to prosecute the will of the constituents.

Where are the ACs, they died or what, thought they would be on here blasting away at Mia and BLP. The ACs are usually thevfirst to come out swinging re anything to do with the opposition, but not a peep outta them today.

I bet my last dollar the ACs are on the Naked Departure blogs with their sneaky, slimy selves alll mesmerized and stuck watching the 4 day old version of….When Thieves Fall Out….and all the name calling and confusion involved.

Ah glad the ACs stuck on Naked Departure and can’t move,…lol, hahaha, lol

  5. Well Well

You’re quite right it has little to do with the record of public service even though it matters to some extent, but whether or not the individual is able to put the collective- interest of the people over his own self-interest.

Dompey…trust me, the ACs are stuck on Naked Departure waiting to see when any of the ministers who are lawyers, name or names get called in the ongoing have out….that is the ACs job, they cant be bothered with BU and Mia today, they can’t move.

Don’t start fantasizing. ..none of the politicians are capable of putting country and people first at any time…all of them are now for the last few days sitting at the very edge of their seats.

    Come out things..lol

Mr Blogmaster your comments are rather perplexing. You said; ‘The party system is located at the foundation of our democracy. It is scary to observe how those with influence are able to easily influence many who offer to serve.”—- What exactly does that mean???

There is an explanation/definition of sorts when you continue: “The BU household is of the view the best representative of a constituency should be a person with an enviable track record of public service. And it should be considered an asset if said person was born and or raised in the constituency they have offered represent. How do we ring-fence the representative from those who are able to command limitless resources….”

But the Bdos party constituency process very clearly goes directly to the heart of your assertion as it’s the local members who ostensibly are charged to select the representative.

So if the hard working, well credentialed person born and bred among the people can be usurped by a conniving party leadership and the executive of the branch for – one supposes – a few well placed pieces of silver why blame the SYSTEM and not the greedy constituents who sold out???

And why blame the folks who bought them out. After all they could not close the sale if there were no buyers interested in the wares offered!!

  13. @Dee Word

You need to read with understanding. The fact a political leader is able to handpick her followers in the various constituencies party constitution not withstanding bears out BU’s point. Do you recall after Mia was booted out by the so called gang of 5 she promised to reform the party? What has been done to convert her promise to action?

If ever there was an article slanted to disadvantage a candidate in a race this is one! Why? By the way Sandra Husbands is the former President of the Barbados Small Business Association and a former Senator. Why they forget all of this about her! Is there something we are missing here or what?

I don’t know how I could have practised law in London in last five years without going to law school or without having passed the requisite standards to do so,” countered Yearwood.”

That’s all the parliament needs, another lawyer, this one practiced in the UK.

That is what’s so frightening, was this dude introduced to the public first or did he just pop up out of nowhere.

Even the scummy politicians in NYC stand on the street corners, introduce themselves and shake people’s hands.

  18. Sandra wins. Congrats. Two good choices.

  19. @enuff

It will not prevent Donville from winning.

  20. @David
You may very well be right, but 16 seats are needed to form the government. The Senate provides opportunity for losing candidates, including Ronnie and Sandra if Donville wins, to be Cabinet members.
Didn’t you post a piece by Ronnie some years ago that was well received on BU? And Sandra is a regular here too.

  21. I heard Sandra on the VOB brasstacks program on Friday 21, November in an obvious pre-arranged call and it was disgusting. Party nomination is Barbados are constituency issues and candidates have to remember that. Sandra sounded weak and pathetic on the air yesterday, and did her image much harm nationally.

  22. HAMILTON A HILL Avatar

@ Bajan in NY…..I too drew the opinion that the call was pre arranged and easily should have qualified as a paid political announcement. I don’t know that she sounded either weak or pathetic, but she clearly followed the prompts of the moderator whose job seemingly is to expose the existing rift every chance he gets. We get it Glyne…..from that very microphone the shenanigans of Peter Wickham re-energized a lifeless DLP. How do you not recognize that Barbadians get it? No more prompting please. There is another way to beat Mia.

  23. NY Bajan @7.58pm
I heard the exchange between the pussy Glyne and Sandra. The lady was very lucid and articulate as she usually is.She sounded like Sandra Husbands. If you don’t support her that’s OK but give jack his jacket.Honey site key mal ee paunce.

  24. mall ee pence……..

  25. If Yearwood can fly in from London,Rawdon can fly in from Paris to change the course of history in Barbados. We need all the help we can get in this next going down.

  26. Tis indeed a sad day when a dissembler like Sandra and person who has consistently run a me-ism operation can be selected for office.

If these ashoes are not careful we are going to end up with the DLP government again.

Wunna feel dat people doan know charlatanry when they see it?

Sandra sounded afraid of the unknown challenger to me, and it make one wonder how will she fear against an experienced and tough opponent like Donville.
FYI, I had no dog in the fight, I heard of Sandra when she was associated with the SBA, and the first time I heard of the guy who challenged her was earlier this week.

Politics is not my forte, but I disagree somewhat. When a party loses at the polls, the leader is frequently fired/resigns, or must undergo a leadership review. Therefore if the leader is going to suffer those consequences, they must have some input into the candidates, who will ultimately become the Minister “pool” if the party is successful. We also know that voters can vote either for or against The Party/its leader/or the candidate in the riding.
I am a little out of touch politically, but once you could elect literally any person who was running as D candidate in St.John. Even Sir Gary would have trouble if he was running as a B.
I also disagree that an “enviable record of public service” is a major criteria. This suggests that if you have had an alternate career path, your potential contributions are ignored. And this is partially why politics has such a challenge attracting competent and honest people.
The unmentioned factor is the party governing body, and this frequently leaves much to be desired. They play puppets to the leader, as many of them owe some of their existence, and future opportunities (ambassadors etc) to the leader.

I didn’t pick a fight with GP as you wrongful assumed because all I wanted to ascertain from him was his medical specialty, and as I blog he hasn’t the testicular fortitude to answer the question becausec obviously he is a fraud.

  31. Northobserver

“I also disagree the a enviable track record of public service is a major criteria” wrong use of the word criteria!

David, is talking about the iindividua’s work history which is one entity, so you have to use the word Criterion instead of criteria.
Criteria is the plural form of criterion and it is used when you’re referring to more than one criterion. Work history is a single criterion!

I am not an English scholar either. I stand corrected.

  33. If we are dutifully following the Westminster system of government then an aspiring member of parliament should have on the bio a track record of service in the area he or she wants to serve.

  34. @enuff

Yes Ronnie appears to be a young bright Barbadians who needs to be encouraged to make a contribution, like Walter. These are the links to which you referred. And do not forget Donville, he posts to BU sometimes.

Sandra won 87-41, congrats to her and yes the coverage on the talk show was obviously arranged although it is fair to say so was the article planted in the Nation and the Barbados Today. It shows how our media is influenced by the political class.

  35. The political purge by the dicator in waiting is clear for all to see. Anyone seen as close to Arthur even if they have been loyal to the BLP will be removed. Maria was the first to be unfaired, then Gilly. It is no longer the Barbados Labour Party ,the BLP is being replaced by the Mottley First, anybody second party. We are surely watching all the traits of a dictator waiting to be unleashed on the people of Barbados where media houses will receive calls about how they cover stories and what stories to cover . The writing is on the wall. Poor Sandra Husbands – putting in all that ground work and then Mia and her strategist Peter Wickham decide that they do not want you.
Trump was right _ the elections are rigged but not in the USA , but at the BLP branch level.

What’s with the family ran regimes, it’s never a good idea to have father and then son managing a country, did yall not get enough of Tom Adams, you want his son too, there are many dangers in family run governments, they pose a threat, a clear and present danger to the people, remember the Duvalier regime that dessimated Haiti.

You can call Adam’s reign rather recent and I don’t see any of his sons being a Justin Trudeau, the people on the island are way too gullible.

Why would you want to give the Mottley family ideas anyway, they would now think they could control people for generations and keep the country and people stagnant while still kowtowing to the 5% minority parasites,.

Do you know how many parasites they have waiting in the wings, the head one being Peter Harris on BLP side, with his side kick in parliament Jerome Walcott…the intent is to break up any such incestuous relationships….that could damage the reputation of the country and any progress for the people.

  38. Enuff said . does a leopard changes its spot ?

  39. the history of Mia past interference in a election scams is well documented in court files of the case Hinckson vs Payne

a leopard cannot change its spots

  40. As far as BU is aware the case Hinkson versus Payne is one where Payne is claiming defamation, it has nothing to do with Mia.

  41. maybe you can read again because there were allegations made to such effect on the actions of Mia during the 2008 election , i meaning the foot soldiers would want to dismiss those allegations as political banter but those are serious allegations which need to be address , understandably their are in the court dockets but if Mia is running for the highest office this image of Vote tampering does not serve her well especially when given legs and surfaced in the public domain.

  42. You made reference to a case before the court between Hinkson and Payne (note the spelling of Hinkson) and BU pointed out you are incorrect. As per usual instead of retreating if you are wrong you retreat to obfuscate to score points with who?

You -as usual- may have the last word.

    #JA101

  43. i know what i made reference and i also know that an allegation in that case was made against Mia You have it on record why dont you read it , The allegations proven or unproven presently is damaging and instead of trying to attack me you as one who speaks about transparency you should not be laying out a foundation for damaged control to protect Mia

    #####LAST WORD

  44. Pornville was losing in the last GE to Husbands and is alleged to have made a desperation call to Stinkler for help and which resulted in items including grantleys,iPads,iPods, etc being dispatched to certain districts in the constituency and which had the desired result.A lot of credit for that near upset would have been attributed to the devastating blows delivered by the former representative who blistered pornville persistently on the matter of porn and morality.

  45. @Gabriel

Did he do that to borrow from Jerkel.

Where is the video, picture in the age of smartphone?

  46. David – It is normal in Westminster for candidates to be helicoptered into constituencies. David Cameron London born and resident but represented Witney; Tony Blair born in Edinburgh , lived in London yet represented Sedgefield; the Millibands born and bred in London but MPs in constituencies outside of London. Thatcher and Theresa May? Same pattern. The purpose–to get a highly desirable candidate in a safe seat so that electoral success for him/her is guaranteed. Now in lil Bdos, should one be from a constituency to represent it?

I thought Yearwood was the preferred candidate and the nomination would have been rigged in his favour? Now Sandra Husbands has won, the DLP Goebellistas are trying to twist the story. Very rich coming from a party that, after Verla Depeiza lost 5 to 86, nominated her ahead of Taan Abed.

  47. Point taken enuff, the paramountcy of the party or something like that.

  48. What OSA have stated about Mia does not go against the grain of what has been stated by some her cabinet members OSA has been around and worked with Mia for many years and should have full knowledge of all details concerning her character and integrity
Therefore those souls who would ride the political horse of flogging those messages of abuse and unfettered power and actions against Mia are also enablers to those actions and should be ashamed of themselves

  49. Enuff,

Once you are member of the party you can stand in any constituency. As to living in London, Tony Blair no longer describes himself as Scottish. London is a cosmopolitan City, we have people from all over the world, even Barbdos..
